Another tip would be to mount the face against the pocket hole end of the drawer. Then the holes would be hidden behind the face and on the back side of the drawer.
Very functional project, that everyone can do by following your instructions. I have found out that lost ramen noodles at the back of your pantry still taste great even after 5 years...🤣
What is really funny is that we did find two boxes of items that were expired inn 2017. I wanted to film them and include them somehow but never got to it. 😂😂
I did something like this years ago in my kitchen. The shelves were up high above my head. I had plexiglass bottoms on the shelves. I am able to view what’s in the back of the shelf from below to see if I really did have what I was looking for, before using a stool to get up to that height. I appreciated how you showed each step of construction thanks. I kind of hate the music during the demo parts. Just me !
Wow! I like the idea of plexiglass bottom. Mrs Poorman is "height challenged" (I have to be politically correct. LOL) and plexi glass would certainly help her!! I appreciate how you think outside the box! Thank you so very much for taking the time to watch our video and for leaving a comment. As for the music... we understand. We are old and our taste in what we think is catchy music is often irritating to others. We will try harder to select music that our viewers might enjoy. :-)
The tandem painting scene while sharing a workbench was adorable 💚 also the part where you both held the wood to feed into the table saw! You guys are so cute!
Well... I have to agree one of us is adorable. I tell her that all the time. Me? Not so much. LOL!!! Thank you for the wonderful comment and for watching our video!
Nice video. Just a suggestion, you might want to lose the background music. It's like being put on hold on the cell phone. A voice over explaining your tools and tips would be a better choice.
You are not the first to point this out, and we actually appreciate the feedback. This is how people learn, improve, and grow. (This is an old video, and the music was free through RUclips, we have since subscribed to obtain better music, and we hope our videos have improved). Thank you for watching our video and the fantastic feedback.
I am really starting to think we are brothers from another mother. I keep doing things just like you. (I made these drawers in our other house, but the quality of the video was poor and it was about time convert these cabinets as well) On a side note, I am upset how many things you have done that I have planned. I have extra drawer slides and had a plan for my heavy planer on my workbench. I looked up videos and the first one with the same idea is your video. so much for my supposed original idea. LOL
Poor Man's DIY LOL. I got to say the planer concept was an idea that just popped into my head. Not sure if I was the first one to do it, but it’s a great idea for limited space
Think of it in terms of what it would cost to hire someone to do it for you. You can save a ton of money as a poor man would do. Upgrading will pay for itself. 😀 Thank you for your fun comment and for taking the time to watch our video. We really do appreciate it.
@ 6:48 I think you may need to cut a bit off them or they may catch in the doors or door hinges. I think you did cut them later. Love the phrase paint tent slash sauna. Super lovely job, you two.
Great job, you two! Love the added functionality of the sliding drawers. And GREAT tip about measuring after the rails are in. We totally would have done it the other way...
Happy to hear you enjoyed this. I had actually measured the cabinet insides before I put in the rails and noticed a discrepancy and thought it best to measure again after installing the rails to account for differences that might occur if the spacers were warped or not planed and sanded to the exact same thickness. Thank you so very much for commenting!!!
This is a super functional upgrade. Definitely better than stationary shelves! Now you can get to work putting back on those pounds you sweated off by filling up the shelves, Richard!
Thank you so very much! Believe it or not, I really did lose weight from this project. I wore a full paint suit when spraying in the tent and after each layer I painted I was DRENCHED!!! LOL
Thank you for the compliment but now you have done it! It is official because you stated you need to do something similar so we expect to see a video of it! LOL! 😂
We are sincerely pleased that you love the pullout drawers. I am truly sorry but I have not seen already made drawers, sold separate from the cabinets because the widths of cabinets may not be a standard size. If you were to make them yourself, the drawer slides are around $10-$15 and depending on the quality of the wood you choose, each drawer may use under $10 in wood. I hope this answers your question. Feel free to ask more if you wish.
I'm retired but this is definitely a project well worth ensuing. Think economy (cheapest way), salvaged second hand timber and go from there. Less waste to landfills should be first tasks, then 'what else can this be used / re purpose for?.
Great points. In addition, if you really want to save more money, use the old fashion drawer pulls. They are at least half the price if not lower. Thank you so much for the great comment!
Greetings from Sunny Florida! Nice job, guys!! I’ve been inspired to do the same and I like your techniques! Thanks for the tutorial! Compliments on your wonderful dynamics! Keeps the videos coming!!!
We sincerely thank you for taking the time to leave a comment. We try to learn and adjust from suggestions when we can. Please note, the channel name is just a name. Much like Poor Boy restaurants who have tons of stores and probably have far better tools than us. Our channel is not an actual how to. We often try to point out, we simply hope to inspire people to do things for themselves so we rarely show measurements. For you.... measure the distance between sides and subtract 1" if the drawer slides you obtain are 1/2" thick. If your cabinet doors do not fully open beyond the sides, you will need to measure how far they the doors protrude and add spacers between the drawer slides and the sides. Sorry if that is clear as mud. If you require clarification let me know and I will work to provide a better description.
@@Poor_Mans_DIY thanks for taking the time to explain. I was drawn to your channel because of the name. I am really poor man’s DIY. The fanciest power tool I have is a compound miter saw. The rest is by hand. I will keep you in my queue because of the willingness to explain things.
We too started the same. If you check our earliest videos we did not have much. Our channel name is more of a concept. When something requires a major repair, like a ceiling collapse from water leak, we were quoted $5000-$8000. As a poor man, the repair had to be accomplished so we invested in a nice power tool to help do the job better. The cost of the power tool and supplies was much less than paying a contractor. It was not the prettiest job, but we learned and we gained a tool to be used for other projects to come. Using this poor man method we saved lots of money and gained tools. :-) if you ever have a question, just ask and we will do our very best to provide a proper resolution. We learned from others and hope to be able to pass it forward.
It is just a name. A quick Google search will reveal tons of businesses that use name Poor Boy (sandwich shops, automotive, tires, woodworks, etc. They own businesses worth way more than my tools. LOL! You are not the first to point this out but we do have fun hearing from you.
@@johnmoor8839Theyn re doing the work themselves rather than buying readymade. Cheaper even if you buy the tools. Not patronizng if you're not looking for offense.
If audiences used their imagination combined with skills, can easily build this with basic tools. No need to put down people who has better equipment. The complainers could have had the same equipment too if they work hard work and made financially sound choices.
Yes, the wood is 1 x 3 but the lower shelves were 1 x 6 on the sides and back because we place taller items on lower shelves and do not want items to fall over when pulling the shelf out. The base of each shelf is 3/4". Thank you so very much for watching our video!
I am sorry. I thought I replied long ago but the system shows I didn't. Anyhow, I have seen people mount it underneath but I don't recommend it. I suspect it the pieces will pinch and not slide as designed. If little weight is added, it might be fine.
We use heavy drawer pulls that can handle up to 100lbs of weight. We also used as many screws as we could to hold the drawer pulls in place. Between the two, the drawers will not tip... unless you load it with more than 100lbs :-) Thank you for the great question!
Thank you so much for the kind words. As for the clamps, here is an Amazon link. I purchased a pair but it seems they now sell them in sets of four amzn.to/3bCn3Nq. You may want to search Amazon for "corner clamp" and see many other options, which may suit you better. If you have any other questions, please do not hesitate to ask and we will do our best to provide a resolution.
Thanks for the tutorial. You have sooo many instruments in your workshop. One can hardly qualify it as a poor man's workshop. I am not even mentioning the extra space one need to build such a workshop. So, no, definitely not for poor people)
We hear similar comments about our channel name but often from those who do not manage their money properly. When people own a house, things always happen and require repairs. As an example, water got into the ceiling of my home and the ceiling came down and there was lots of damage. I cannot leave big holes in the ceiling so we researched how much it would cost to hire a carpenter to fix it. The estimate is VERY expensive. Instead of paying a carpenter, I bought some tools. The cost of the tools was much less that the price of a carpenter. I then studied and learned how to repair my ceiling myself. When I finished, I then gained new tools that I could use to make and repair other things in the house. The idea of my channel is that you do NOT have to be rich to make and repair things by yourself. many of the things I do can actually be accomplished by others who are not wealthy (Poor Men & Women). My workshop was often outside. If you watch my older videos, I also cut and painted inside my living room. I now have a garage where I work because I made benches that are on wheels. I move them to the center of the garage to work and then I clean up and park my car in the garage. I do not have a separate workshop. I use what little space I have. I noticed your picture and you have a lovely scarf. Maybe you too are poor but instead of buying a scarf, you could buy a sewing machine and make beautiful clothes yourself. You may be poor but if you buy a sewing machine, you can make wonderful clothes. I hope this helps you to understand and you should not assume I am rich or poor. It is just a name for our channel. Also, we both work full time jobs and still have made 300 videos and we post them virtually every week for 7 years. Because of this, some companies have been so kind to bless us with free tools and ask that we make a video about the tool. So we earned many tools from lots and lots of hard work. We could not afford to buy the tools we are lucky to have. Anyhow, we sincerely thank you for watching the video and we wish you the very best., Sincerely, Richard "Poor Man"
This is definitely going on my to-do list for my pantry! I do have a question, though. I noticed that you permanently installed the rails in the cabinet. Do you think that using the existing shelf adjustment holes would be viable to let you have draw-shelves that can be readjusted to different vertical spacing as needed?
Thank you for the brilliant question. My first gut reaction was to say it wont work because you need to screw the drawer pull outs to the cabinets sides to securely hold them in place. I guess, if you cut the drawers to the perfect width, there will be enough sideward pressure to hold the slides up simply by using dowels to hold the rails in the adjustable peg holes. My only concern is, if you pull the drawer out too far, you lose the sideward pressure and the slides could fall out from the peg holes. If you try this, I would love to know how things work out.
@@Poor_Mans_DIY I may try at least constructing the sidewall rails this way and see if it seems secure enough with the pegs. If it works out, I'll let you know!
If possible, use spacers when installing one shelf at a time. The spacers can be used to hold the next sliders up while working on them and hopefully that will be less stress on your back. We would love to hear how things work out.
You are spot on. Measure the width and subtract the thickness of the drawer slides (rails). Critical point. If you cabinet doors are made in a manner where they dont fully open to the width of the cabinet itself, you will need to add a strip of wood where the draw slides will be installed or your cabinet drawers will not pull open and will be blocked by the cabinet doors. I hope that makes sense, but if not, please let me know and I will try to explain it better. Thank you for taking the time to watch our video. We sincerely appreciate it.
please do not be discouraged by not having expensive tools. In reality, you could do this with only some glue, screws and a screw driver. In most countries, you can go to the big box store to purchase the plywood and you can have them make cuts for you. In the US, most store charge $0.50 per cut. Once the pieces are cut, it is a matter of using glue and screws. If you choose to use pocket holes which are stronger, you can get a mini pocket hole jig for around $10. Just give it a try some day. You can do it! 👍
Da Radi...there are plenty ways to get good used tools and get them one at a time. It’s possible to get them economically! It’s what I’ve done! Some people give them away almost free! Good luck!
@@Poor_Mans_DIY so the cost of the wood is nothing, it's just the cutting you have to look out for? what if you just got sawdust then you could use your poor mans glue to stick it together. give it a try poor person . you can do it.
@@naticaleb123 i dont think these guys have to worry about stuff like that. i agree though thats how i got most of mine., and reusing and repurposing stuff is a great way to help the planet. or you could make a top of the range table saw with glue and screws like the poor mans helpers have in there little workshop.
Your comment is what makes us happiest. To hear that we might have helped someone else means a lot. Thank you for taking the time to watch and for your kind words.
I sincerely apologize for the delayed response. My wife and I are recovering from COVID. The cost can vary dramatically depending on the materials you use. I believe I made the shelves with a single Sheet of plywood. It might have been a little more than a sheet. The type of plywood I chose used to be around $50 but the cost has recently hone up and is closer to $100. Paint will cost around $30 so the only other major cost is the drawer pulls. They normally cost around $20 per pair if I purchase locally but I believe you can buy in bulk for around $10-$15 per pair.
Great question. There are a couple reasons why we did not use the original drawer. First, the original shelf was made from laminated particle board (also called Melamine) It is a good product but I find that using screws, often makes the particle board fail quick so it wont last as long as plywood. Second, When pulling out the drawers, items will fall out unless I built sides. This means I would have to buy Melamine to make the sides or it would not match the bottom. So.... we decided to do the whole thing in plywood. I hope this answers your question.
You are absolutely right. We actually considered that but we use some tall bottles and boxes that require additional space. Thank you so much for watching our video and for leaving an observant comment.
If you are a fan of open cabinets, that is a great idea. You would be able to make the shelves a little wider because you would not have to worry about clearing the doors when pulling out the drawers. We thank you for watching our video and or the wonderful suggestion.
Hi Both, Another great video showing that drawers aren't difficult things to make. Did you glue as well as screw? Take care both. Cheers, Huw. PS Be careful Richard as I can see the channel being renamed Poor Woman's DIY. LOL
But my screws would go right through the thin wall of the pantry cabinet. I need the shelves thst screw on to the shelf itself but there are 7 shelves and they're $65 each at lowes.
Ms Patricia, if you purchased drawer pulls, they usually come with screws that are about 1/4". I assume it is possible that your pantry walls are made of 1/2" wood so it will work for you. We wish you good luck if you decide to attempt something like we have.
It's called poor man's bc that what you'll be once you purchase the tools lol. This is my first time watching, so did one of you study carpenter or were self taught? Great job and project, btw.
We often hear comments about our channel name, but we really like how you put it and you might be right. I am going to be poor at this rate. LOL!!! We are self taught. I was the geeky kid that just tore things apart and put them back together , as a kid. We sincerely thank you for taking the time to watch our video and for leaving a comment.
i could live for a year on what the poor mans tools cost. must have looked the word poor up in a dictionary, i get the feeling neither of the jolly duo has any first hand experience.
Well, you too can spend hours fulming videos each week and even more hours editing them for posting to RUclips and after posting over 300 videos in six years, you too can make a little money to allow you to buy a tool here and there. If you own a home and inevitably need something repaired, instead of paying a contractor thousands of dollars, use a small portion of the money to purchase supplies and good tools to help complete the repairs on your own. You save money the Poor Man's way, and you gained a tool that can help you on future projects.
We have had tons of people mention the same thing about the music. This is an old video which was made with the use of free RUclips music, which was lacking at best. Thanks to comments like yours, we have made changes and hope the music we use each week is no longer annoying. We sincerely thank you for taking the time to watch our video and for your constructive criticism.
Do not be discouraged. there are different ways to go about projects. You can go to local garage sales and pick up inexpensive basic tools. Another option is that most big box stores actually rent tools. Another way to look at buying tools is to see what a contractor wants to charge you to do a project. If they want $1000, then spending $100 for a power tool is still much less expensive and then you can use that tool for future projects. Dont forget to see if friends or family have tools that you can borrow. There are definitely ways that you will be able to accomplish so much on your own. We know you will be able to accomplish so much and would love to hear back from you .
Very good point. :-) Kidding aside, you have a valid point and I should have show how you can add screws in a 45 degree angle, even without a jig. We do thank you for taking the time to watch our video and for the fun comment.
While I love your video the added music was way too loud and annoying. What would you think about softer background music if you feel you have to use it? P.S...The drawers worked great in my pantry😊
We have been told this many times and we hope we have learned from it. This is actually one of our earlier videos and we used copyright free music, which isnt the greatest. Hopefully the background music in our newest videos are better. Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment and we are THRILLED that the drawers work so well in your pantry!
I get that a lot. I too did not have a ton of tools. If I had major project needed to be completed, such as repairing a collapsed ceiling, I was quoted at $8,000. Instead of paying a contractor, I studied on doing the repair and purchased tools I need to complete the task. It was much less than paying contractor and when finished, I had tools that could be used for other things. There were many projects we did because we wanted to upgrade rooms but applied the same principle. Contractors quoted huge amounts. We bought tools instead. 😀
its much easier to rip all doors off all cabinates and throw stuff onto all your shelves, within plain site, 1 layer deep. nothing is buried. but my wife wonT allow it.
We sincerely thank you for taking the time to watch our video and for your comment. You are definitely not the first to comment about the music. I guess we need to find music that appeals to more people. 😀
Neha, Please keep in mind, Poor Man's DIY is a name. If you search Google for "Poor Man", you will find many large companies who use it as part of the name. I did not mean to offend anyone. If you do not have a large selection of tools this still can be done. Most big box stores where you buy the wood can cut the wood for you. In the US, they usually only charge about $0.25 per cut, so it will be very inexpensive. Once the wood is cut, you only need a screwdriver, screws and glue. If you want to use pocket holes for a stronger hold, there are mini pocket hole jigs that are around $10. I hope this helps but if you have any other questions, or comments, please feel free to contact me.
@@Poor_Mans_DIY it was just a suggestion for you to increase your audience base. If you show with minimal or basic tools more people are likely to follow your tutorials. Keep up the good work.
If you want you can use a handsaw to cut wood, or pay the lumber yard to do more cuts Then all you need is a drill and sandpaper vs palm sander. The jigs used are a wise investment. Many farmers buy tools for a project and then sell them when they’re done the project. You could do that for the clamps and drilling guides if you need to get $ back.
As wood and paint was the material used it is an affordable solution. Melamine board would need a large table saw but wood can be cut with a handsaw. Just takes more sweat and accuracy of cuts will be needed

Actually, you can still probably create this even without access to a saw. First, many of the local hardware stores will make cuts for you. You can measure and draw out our plans and ask them to cut them out for you. They probably wont cut sheets of plywood small enough to make the sides but for the sides, you can purchase 1X2 in boards. They will cut them down for you. Second, if you want to get adventurous, hardware store often have rental tools. You can then give a saw a try and you might get hooked and start making more. Thank you for the compliment but now you have done it! It is official because you stated you need to do something similar so we expect to see a video of it! LOL! 😂
Omg, I love it!!! Do you know what those cost already made? A lot! Thank you.
Fantastic! What a great and practical idea.
Glad you like it!
Thank you so very much for your incredibly kind comments. We truly are humbled and we appreciate it very much!
Nice video and build. Nothing wrong with pocket screws. Mahalo for sharing! : ) 🐒
Traditionalist dont seem to like pocket holes... because they are so easy to use. LOL
@@Poor_Mans_DIY The world is big enough for all of us. Ha. 🙂
I agree with the comments on “not a poor man’s DIY”. You should have showed how you figured out the dimensions of the spacers and slides.
This is also known as family enterprise or undivided firm in Our day to day language... And partnership in your terms... Keep up the good work!!!
Thank you!
This is not poor man’s DIY. You guys used like 3k worth of equipment lol
It is just a name. A quick Google search will reveal tons of businesses that use name Poor Boy (sandwich shops, automotive, tires, woodworks, etc. They own businesses worth way more than my tools. LOL! You are not the first to point this out but we do have fun hearing from you.
very true. and a large workshop, with a very expensive house above it. poor man, how patronising can you get.
For people who can't afford to pay someone else to do it plus materials = poor.
Love the idea- what is the dimensions of your wood. Are they 1x3.
Yes, the wood is 1 x 3 but the lower shelves were 1 x 6 on the sides and back because we place taller items on lower shelves and do not want items to fall over when pulling the shelf out. The base of each shelf is 3/4". Thank you so very much for watching our video!
The only activity is rented apartments must have movable furniture and houses permanent solutions... Work accordingly... !!!!
Thank you for your comments
What size plywood did you use for the drawers?
I used 3/4 on all sides and the bottom as well because some drawers will have lots of heavy canned foods, bottles or even large bags of rice.
So glad I found this video. This is just what I need for my pantry. “Paint tent/sauna.” 😂
We hope it inspires you to do this for yourself. 😀
This is such a great idea! Good job 👍👍
Thank you, sir! As always, we truly appreciate your support and kind words.
Sending the link to my husband right NOW
That is wonderful. We hope you can share with us how things turn out when you convince him to do the work. 😃
Is anyone else wondering if Jennifer closed the doors on Richard when he was inside the cupboard?
I cut out the video that showed the door slam on my head. She wanted the cabinets finished "right now!" LOL
I like that idea!
Could I use these underneath the sliding drawer
I am sorry. I thought I replied long ago but the system shows I didn't. Anyhow, I have seen people mount it underneath but I don't recommend it. I suspect it the pieces will pinch and not slide as designed. If little weight is added, it might be fine.
How did you keep the drawers from tipping forward when pulled out?
We use heavy drawer pulls that can handle up to 100lbs of weight. We also used as many screws as we could to hold the drawer pulls in place. Between the two, the drawers will not tip... unless you load it with more than 100lbs :-) Thank you for the great question!
Great work! Where did you get those clamps to assemble?
Of course it's easy enough to simply remove and replace a dozen screws if you really felt the need to relocate drawers.........
Thank you. I will give it a try as much as my back can take it.
If possible, use spacers when installing one shelf at a time. The spacers can be used to hold the next sliders up while working on them and hopefully that will be less stress on your back. We would love to hear how things work out.
How do you determine the drawer width? do you simply subtract the thickness of the rails? any tips
Great idea yall. Subscribed
Thank you so very much for taking the time to watch our video and for your kind comment. We sincerely appreciate it.
Great idea. I just dont have all these expensive tools.
please do not be discouraged by not having expensive tools.

Great idea, exalent work.
Thank you so very much! We appreciate it.
Any idea the cost of this will be like?
I sincerely apologize for the delayed response. My wife and I are recovering from COVID. The cost can vary dramatically depending on the materials you use. I believe I made the shelves with a single Sheet of plywood. It might have been a little more than a sheet. The type of plywood I chose used to be around $50 but the cost has recently hone up and is closer to $100. Paint will cost around $30 so the only other major cost is the drawer pulls. They normally cost around $20 per pair if I purchase locally but I believe you can buy in bulk for around $10-$15 per pair.
MUY PRACTICO DESDE MEXICO
Muchas gracias. Nosotros realmente lo apreciamos.
Just curious, could you have reused the original shelves for the base of your pullout drawers?
Great question. There are a couple reasons why we did not use the original drawer. First, the original shelf was made from laminated particle board (also called Melamine) It is a good product but I find that using screws, often makes the particle board fail quick so it wont last as long as plywood. Second, When pulling out the drawers, items will fall out unless I built sides. This means I would have to buy Melamine to make the sides or it would not match the bottom. So.... we decided to do the whole thing in plywood. I hope this answers your question.
Thanks!
Looks like you could fit 2 or 3 more drawers
You are absolutely right. We actually considered that but we use some tall bottles and boxes that require additional space. Thank you so much for watching our video and for leaving an observant comment.
I suppose you could ditch cabinet doors on existing cabinets & just attach new drawer pulls. Yes? I’m redoing my kitchen 😊

LOL

Great idea Guys very useful project 👍 😊
Thanks so much 😊
But my screws would go right through the thin wall of the pantry cabinet.
Good tips
Thank you so very much!
We dont have pocket holes in UK.
Go to Amazon.co.uk and search "pocket hole jigs" there are many pocket hole devices even in the UK.
Lose the music and you get a thumbs up.
Sorry the music was not to your liking but we sincerely appreciate that you took the time to watch our video and for leaving an honest comment.
Wish I was poor enough to afford all of those tools. I try to do these things without all of the expensive equipment.
You save money the Poor Man's way, and you gained a tool that can help you on future projects.
annoying background music. I did watch video though.
Never too much space
Could not have said that any better. Thank you so very much for watching!
Is nice to have all the tools for the project, but when u don't have them n can't afford them? Guess i have to find another way.🤔
Do not be discouraged. there are different ways to go about projects.
Poor people can’t afford a pocket hole jig… 😂
Very good point. :-) Kidding aside, you have a valid point and I should have show how you can add screws in a 45 degree angle, even without a jig. We do thank you for taking the time to watch our video and for the fun comment.
Just poking fun. Thanks for the vid!
For a "poor man's diy" you sure do have a lot of power tools.
👍
Thank you, Joseph! We appreciate the thumbsup as always!
its much easier to rip all doors off all cabinates and throw stuff onto all your shelves, within plain site, 1 layer deep. nothing is buried. but my wife wonT allow it.

Would it matter if I have more Japanese blood than anything else? 😄
You have so many tools...how can this be poor man's diy?
Please show a way a poor man can do this.
If you want you can use a handsaw to cut wood, or pay the lumber yard to do more cuts
Then all you need is a drill and sandpaper vs palm sander.
Just takes more sweat and accuracy of cuts will be needed
my thoughts exactly.
I hate the music choice, too repetitive and too loud. Would have been nice if it was a little tone down.

Too difficult for a woman without access to a saw. 😒
We do wish you the very best if you decide to try this. If you have any questions or think we might be able to provide some advise or suggestions, feel free to reach out to us and we will try our best to assist.
