4. My Mind Ain't So Open (11:19)
Listening to this on Feb. 18, 2022. 44 years on and this band still sounds fucking brilliant.
This is superb, the light pours out of me is an amazingly clar and tight recording
Fresh and dynamic respect to the Maida Vale crew and of course the band!
listening to this in Belgrade in October 2022..I brought the first album when it first come out ...this is the first time I heard the peel session..totally brilliant.
Live sessions recorded for John Peel usually sounded better than a band's official releases, and this is no exception. Thank you for sharing it here.
Yes they did.
Super excited for the new John McGeoch book. I love that dude, he was always interesting and inspiring to listen to✌🏻
Somewhere in a box in the attic I have a dusty cassette of Magazine rehearsing before they recruited Dave Formula. Very Spiral Scratch. Can't remember what's all on it - The Light Pours Out Of Me, definitely. Also, the version of My Mind's Not So Open was entitled Suddenly We're Eating Sandwiches, which Howard later told me came from a Beckett short story. Er, that's all I got. Until I dig out that tape!
Secondhand Daylight is one of the lost treasures of that era....
One of the greatest albums ever recorded.
Definitive Gaze is interesting , Magazine were a unique band who's music still sounds as fascinating as it was in 78.
Interesting is an understatement.
That's a good song that one. A bit dark towards the end but you get uplifted out into a happy outro
Totally true, their sound are advanced and sophisticated. Some bands introduced electronic sounds but they came from other trends. Magazine came from punk-rock and they did it magnificently!
agree . "the conspiracy of silence" ? its about Gay Glitter
This one's a 'work in progress' version, I'd say...
One of my fave band at the time (77 onwards).
I was already fan of Buzzcocks (Spiral Scratch - January 77). So, I was a bit disappointed to see Howard leave the band.
But actually it was for the better. Pete Shelley took the leading with Buzzcocks and Howard formed the great Magazine.
And I super happy to have witnessed an extraordinary concert when I was travelling to Londo in 2012. On that evening called "From Front to Back", four different line-up was on stage. Ending this very long set with the original line-up. I was totally exhausted after this!
RIP, John McGeogh
Amen. 🙏🏻
This is one of the best peel sessions ever
Awesome Band and so innovative
Just about the best sound for a 1978 UK band, and also, the best look, too....still sounds good today, but that is to be expected considering the awesome array of talent lined up against that wall...
Adamson had just started playing when he joined. That blows my mind, his bass is amazing.
Arguably the best post punk song ever written, ever played.
outrageously brilliant. this is the best version.
Prefer this version than the one on the LP. Much more raw and not over produced.
It is often said that Peel sessions produced bands best versions of their material.
Barry Adamson. Yes.
Jazz devil!
This group sound as new as when they first became heard of and being listened to on all forms of media platform.
Fantastic.
Jonathan Watmough love magazine .....still do
A person I knew , had their first LP , he hated it I bought it for £1 .. was 1979, Still have it 🙂
Devoto devotee!

The Band, the best ,jewels , please a new concert
I love the way the first verse is missing in this version of Definitive Gaze, even though I like the Real Life album version.
Lovely Peel sessions
Eons ahead of their time
MCGEOCH = GENIUS
Miss John McGeoch..
Yeah great guitarist...
So innovative & so influential
Brill thanks.........
Ouvindo em 21 de fevereiro no Brasil 🇧🇷🍺Um fã de buzzcocks.
Timeless music!
A recent fan of three years! Where have I been?
Plenty of time to "catch-up" on their entire back catalogue (including No Thyself),you won't regret it.
TaG & DG....smashing versions!
Wonderfull!!!
Espetacular 😆😆😆😆
sounds like eno and buzzcocks baby
It is logical that it sounds like Buzzcocks, being Devoted in both bands!
Wow they sounded so much better live. Tragic how stale the stereo recording of the instruments sound in comparison.
Lookin' well suspicious there Howie... what you hiding? :D
" Peel " Back The layers Of " Musical Genius " And Enjoy This " Absolutely Indispensable " Session Courtesy Of Magazine One Of The " Most Significant Bands Of The late 1970's !!! From Adrian Browne 1965

Howl, yes. Really dig the 2nd track.
Fuckin' timless.
three band members went on to form Visage, along with midge ure and steve strange
But Visage's best song was written by Billy Currie from Ultravox
Luvacious
real life wooow
August 1978. Lyceum. Some other was there ?
No one moron saw it, fortunately. God bless Magazine!
Andrew Yefimako I SAW THEM IN 1979
Cool sound like euro prog meets punk.
❤️💣
Future Bad Seed Barry Adamson !
And a brilliant solo artist in his own right, seen him twice.....amazing!
Lucky you, myself and another english friend(from Manchester) tried for 10-15 years to see him here in NL,he never showed up at festivals he was meant to perform at,eventually he turned up at a festival in Amsterdam and we were nervous that he still might not show? Although I was informed when we did finally see him he'd "kicked the habit"?
👍
I still prefer the early Buzzcocks.
the light falls out of me ... a reference to Gary Glitter , look what happened to him
This is a song...........
Never a fan of these must admit I loved Buzzcocks I didn't see them live until 79 though
Magazine > Buzzcocks. And I like them both.
When i was young,i thought they are boring, they sounded to me like Pink Floyd, i was into Chaos UK, DISORDER, DEAD KENNEDYS. Now i know better, but still like that trash stuff,GBH, DISCHARGE....
Si la música de ahora te parece una m*****que lo es deja de lamentarte y escucha todo esto.
Are there any female Magazine fans?
My first two girlfriends bought records by them.
@@paulbeardsley4095 I'm glad to hear that. Thank you for responding.
