I live in Northern Minnesota, where hoses are stored for the winter and our temperatures drop to Below 0. I get "Elite" car washes from "QuikTrip" for $11.00, "Touchless", under carriage pressure, and shine. My black 2011 Toyota 4Runner, which has never had any repairs, only maintenance like tires, battery, and brakes, is still a beauty and "until death do we part."I put her into storage for the summer, and drive my black 2024 Mustang 5.0 GT Premium Fastback Coupe, and give her the same treatment. I bought both vehicles new and had them undercoated to fight the salt and chemicals. Love Scotty's channel ❤
I was talking about moving from a cold place to a warm place. The specific duration of human life never came up until you mentioned it. What do you mean and how does the human lifespan relate to living in a warm place to avoid salt on public roads?
I live in Canada, just wash your car on warmer days. I also have a power washer attachment the has wheels and 5 nozzles. Rolls under the car to rinse everything under there. If you're really worried, get an undercoating or krown protection.
I live in the Chicago burbs. Even though we haven’t had much snow this year, we get enough that salt is put on the road every few days.Very frustrating!
It is going down to single digits tomorrow in Chicago so I just wait until we get a thaw and go to the car wash. I don't want to turn my driveway into a skating rink by washing it at home. The ground is frozen here.
I live in Maine and they love the salt and calcium. Alot of times when sand would be more than enough but they salt and never fails come beginning of February the city is complaining they are running out of salt. I always go to the self serv car washes and blast the underneath and frame atleast once a month, try to go every two weeks but doesn't always happen. Even the drive through car washes say they do the undercarriage and they try but it doesn't get into the cross members and such where salt and sand and dirt can just sit and accumulate. My father In law never washes his truck and gets about 12-14 yrs max, he had to junk a 2008 2500hd with 140,000 miles in 2022 cause it was rotted right out while I sold my 2006 2500hd with 143,000 miles in June for $6000. Cleaning does make a difference.
Also, there is a spray can - DuPont Snow & Ice, it is pre treatment, I spray under the fender, on headlight / tail lights and mirrors, you need to wait a few minutes and wipe off with a microfiber towel so it want be a hazy. Keeps off ice and snow to build up...
@donniev8181 besides what I mentioned above, also I do spray on brake lines too. I ski all my life and whenever I'm heading up to high elevation areas I do it, not really within a city commute, unless I know it's a snow storm on the way...
Thank God that there's a great touch free carwash here in my city. It has the option for an undercarriage blast and after each snow event, I take my new Toyota straight through this particular wash.
I live in Wisconsin. Put my Mazda through the Kwik Trip Elite car wash with the undercarriage wash after every snow but only when it is sunny out and in the 30s F out. I do not want my doors to freeze shut on me.
I send my car through a car wash almost every day during this winter. There's a moo mo car wash where I live and I pay $38 a month for the hot wax version and that gives me unlimited car washes. Best money I ever spent on my car.
Gotta watch those carwashes that have brushes. Ya never know when a car before you will have a piece of metal or wiring come off and get stuck in the brushes then destroy your car's paint. It only takes one time to ruin your cars paint job. It happened to my Infiniti, I took great care to keep that car in pristine condition, and one day I went through my usual carwash and something stuck in the brushes and tore up the paint on my roof.
@EpicATrain search out touch free car washes in your area. The high-tech spots do just as good if not better and you do not need to worry about your car being damaged.
In cold climates leave your car outside. Puting it in a garage and letting the ice and salt melt will corrode the metal much faster than leaving it frozen in the cold. I grew up in Wisconsin and everyone up there knows this. They put tons of salt on the roads in Wisconsin.

So I would disagree... garaging the car in a dry garage is better. Better yet, rinse off *then* garage it.
@John-jd7mm My point is the melting process after a car is put in the garage is what provides the moisture and higher temperature that cause the corrosion process .
I just buy used cars for about $5000. After 5 or more years I get another. What's wrong with a Mazda 3? Spending $40K or more is INSANE. I don't worry much about washing it too often here in NY.
the last segment of the woman with her car breaking down I had the same problem when I bought my Jeep wrangler the engine and transmission was fine but the frame was in certain sections were rotted out and when I looked at it the day I bought it it looked fine and it was undercoated but after 2 weeks I noticed a hole in the frame that I didn't see and I took back to the dealer where I bought it and they took care of it on their dime. I still own the jeep and in 2022 or earlier I did have to have the frame repaired again on my dime.
Scotty a Video Idea: With the fires in LA what should auto owners do to their cars after being exposed to all the ash, chemicals and debris, from the fires? Air cleaner, cabin filter, thorough hand spray wash to remove grit, careful vehicle inspection, etc.
Scotty, you crack me up......if you have a garden hose that is still functioning in the "winter" you don't ACTUALLY have "winter"....ha ha..... In Canada, if you try to use your garden hose in the winter, it will freeze and crack open, and also the actual water tops on the house will crack open. Anyway, YOU don't have winter....you have a cool fall or a cool spring.....head north if you want to experience winter.... ha ha ha
I just spray mine off the best I can with water, then pull It into the garage. I've never had an issue. And I live in a climate that's cold in the winter.
Well here in Canada I just undercoat my vehicles every fall with a drip less oil undercoat usually fluid film it puts a force field on the undercarriage and inside the the body panels plus as a bonus actually lubricates the moving components in the suspension of the vehicle 👍🏻
Couple years ago I moved to WI from AZ. Wasn’t thinking when I drove the Tahoe through a car wash when it was about 28 degrees Fahrenheit. Doors almost froze shut on me.
Had that happen to me in an 89 escort gt. I drove around with heat on high. It still didn't thaw the doors. I had to climb through the hatch. That opened for me. Good thing I was 18, I don't think I would enjoy that at near 47.
I've tried hooking up to hot (warm) water from the laundry tub faucet. This will not freeze when it hits the cold metal, and is easier on your hands (no frostbite)
Scotty! Those tires on that Toyota van are going to kill that vehicle long before the salt will. OMG! I can see the wear bars are even with the top of the tread! 😨😱🤯 Strongly recommend that van's owner to replace those tires immediately. I'm also wondering what the date code on those tires says. If they are more than 8 or 9 years old, they are too old.
I have a '97 Land Cruiser (fj80) with 29k original miles. I can't stand the later models. I think Land Cruiser died after '97. And now this new crap being called a Land Cruiser is an insult.
@genebigs spend the money on a no brush car wash. Or even one of these self-serve power washes. For under $5 you get a power washer and waxer that you can do the wheels and undercarriage. And they're open 24 hours.
Colorado, NaCl + MgCl2 + molasses (not sure) + sand. Molasses helps it stick to roads and your car! In winter all you can do is find a good car wash place that also washes the bottom of your car or truck.
Stop using pressure washers on your cars, people. Way too many electronic (expensive) control modules that can be destroyed if gotten wet. These modules were NOT designed to stand up under the very high pressure from today's pressure washers.
@@toriless Oh yes there is. Most cars now have fuel pump control modules located directly on the frame near the fuel tank, fully exposed to everything. Many body control modules are frame-mounted, as well as all electronic anti-lock brake wheel speed sensors, wiring, and related tone rings. It's okay to rinse the undercarriage with LOW PRESSURE, high volume water. Electrical connectors can handle that. But they cannot handle the HIGH PRESSURE jet (2,000 PSI and up) generated by a typical pressure washer. Hell, nowadays, a typical LED headlight or taillight assembly is loaded with electronics that are destroyed by water intrusion. Most of these assemblies have to be replaced as a unit, at a cost of THOUSANDS.

Great comment, but some of us are stuck up North for a lifetime 😩.

Car wash subscriptions now average between $40 - $60 a month in Minnesota
I think they are like $25 a month here in Tacoma WA
It's $79 for the cheapest here in westchester NY lol. Consider yourself semi lucky.
Check for Black Friday deals got a good one from silver star car wash. $50 for 3 months unlimited in mn.

Save your motor oil on oil changes, and you can use it for grill fat.

Toyota made a huge mistake with the LandCruiser making it a hybrid 4cyl turbo. What a shame.
Agreed. Disappointing
Yep: neutered it
They have a hybrid 3.5 liter 6 cylinder that they used in some of the early Lexus RX. Why not perfect that engine instead of 4cyc turbo?
We’ve had no issues with our Hyundai palisade and neither have the other people I’ve talked to in our area. And it’s paid off

I am in North Central PA. Lots of salt when you don't need it. Alot less when the roads need it!
Same here in NJ.
Good idea, but a lot of people live in apartment complexes that don't allow you to wash your cars.
True. And my apartment parking lot is next to a natural river. It wouldn’t be good to have run off from soap into the river.
Good thing they don’t drop 9 million pounds of salt on the road that would just end up in the river….
You need to worry more about those worn tires. What do you do in NYC when your hose is off until April
Krown or Fluid Film once annually

That particular kind of Honda engine on your pressure washer has a rubber timing belt running in oil. How can Honda do it but Ford can't?
Honda is serious company , and compare ford with Honda , ford are live only cos of government ,
Also has a plastic cam shaft! Garbage
That power washer is not powering a car, propelling over 2700lbs down the road. Big difference, not as much tension on the moving belt
Dont drive until the roads are clear and dry..
Honda engines are never black, they are the Chinese copies.
Honda motors are red.
FYI don't forget get to check the description box folks I bought a great scan tool from his link.

Or toss your sprinkler under for 5 minutes
As long as the roads remain salted, what point is there in removing it from the car? It just goes back on the road.
Can't imagine doing this every night after work, how often should this be done?

Find a TOUCHLESS CARWASH, those brushes will kill your paint fast.
Unless your paint is trash already, my crown vic has flaking paint so I'd still use a brush... Sometimes lol
I thought water itself would dissolve salt.
I go through the car wash every week . Above freezing here, maybe April/may
You will never get the salt out of the metal's joins; this is where the worst rust can start.
I think you're right. But keeping it clean helps !
You run it through a car wash for Christ sake.
@@WALTERBROADDUS Don't use Christ's name in vain. Blasphemy!
I've always sprayed suspension parts liberally with wd40. Also all nooks & crannies to to displace water after washing. Works for me.
He’s on Addie’s
I like access!
Good thing I was 18, I don't think I would enjoy that at near 47.
that happened to me in the 90's with my ford ranger and my door would not latch and I had to hold my door closed while I was driving that was scary.
"DESTROY" your car... c'mon guy. Before winter you just ceramic coat your car and your fine and spray the bottom and wheel wells with Fluid Film.
Car washes every week are just fine and less messy.
Use Surface Shield by Blaster, you only need to do it once. Make sure can temperature is 75 F
Does kitty litter work better than salt?
Kitty litter turns to clay slime as soon as it gets wet. I’ve seen it dozens of times. Totally useless in snow.
haha I'm Canadian so its going to get down to - 24 C (-13F)
Nothing like a Scotty vid! 🤙
Screw that! I'm going to the car wash.
Scotty calling out his son in front of everyone!
I would move
Too cold to use a hose, I’ll just go to the car wash.
I've tried hooking up to hot (warm) water from the laundry tub faucet. This will not freeze when it hits the cold metal, and is easier on your hands (no frostbite)
A boy (Scotty) and his toys! 😅
Hyundai had a period where they were pretty good. Kia has always sucked from day 1.
Too much work! I just moved out of a snow state back in 2017. Problem was solved🤷🏽♂🙌🏽
A hose...at -10...-20 C....nope
Yeah the salt could corrode the brake pipes
I love when Scotty says, "Okay it's flowing" when the water is bursting out of the hose. Made me laugh. And look what a great Dad he is. Respect!
thanks for the advice
Another terrible day for the kilmer clan. You must be pissed!
I have a '97 Land Cruiser (fj80) with 29k original miles. I can't stand the later models. I think Land Cruiser died after '97. And now this new crap being called a Land Cruiser is an insult.
Take salt-free vacas to save car! Lol🧂🧂🧂
It'll eat em up, dang VA mountain salted roads, can hear my poor Ford van rust on a quite night hahaha
Nobody is washing their own car in the driveway in the winter.
The car will last as long on how you take care of it ;)
Sorry Scotty, I’m not doing all that in the freezing cold during the Winter here in New York. My car will just have to suffer till the Spring!
Too cheap for going for a car wash?
Although I AM too cheap to spend for a car wash, that ruins the finish. I don’t mind a dirty car till March.
@genebigs spend the money on a no brush car wash. Or even one of these self-serve power washes. For under $5 you get a power washer and waxer that you can do the wheels and undercarriage. And they're open 24 hours.
@@WALTERBROADDUS Good idea! Thanks Walter.
Scotty your information and content is great, and it's free.
Waste of money. All you need is water. Salt is incredibly soluble in water.
👍👍👍❤❤❤
Pointless
Clean your salt before things get more salty after the inauguration! 😂
No salt in WA or CT unlike IL ot IN
You do have to buy an intermediate or higher level car wash in order to get your undercarriage sprayed
You want to get one that does the undercarriage.
Colorado, NaCl + MgCl2 + molasses (not sure) + sand. Molasses helps it stick to roads and your car! In winter all you can do is find a good car wash place that also washes the bottom of your car or truck.
My magic wand is attached, it works fine
Many hoses & nozels freeze up within & I dont see many people out in the cold goin out to spray something🤔
they have self-serve car washes.
Thank you Scotty
You can’t use your product you mention in northern climates. Doesn’t make sense
Stop using pressure washers on your cars, people. Way too many electronic (expensive) control modules that can be destroyed if gotten wet. These modules were NOT designed to stand up under the very high pressure from today's pressure washers.
You are not washing the engine.
Undercarriage not engine, big difference, no electronics on the frame
Don't the car washes use recycled water now?
Yes, and it's nasty as hell.
Scotty, can you make videos about the Toyota Sienna Gen3 transmission leaks and maybe a transmission fluid drain & fill?
