@caredge - great knowledge sharing. Thanks for helping the community. Based on your video where you recommend taking pre approved loan - In a recent conversation with BMW for a new car, my friend was told that the discount from MSRP (roughly around $5k) can be given, only if he takes the finance from BMW financials, else there are no discounts. How do you tackle that situation? Expert advice pls
Hi @@timemusicindia, for expert advice on negotiating discounts, visit caredge.com/concierge. We’d be happy to help you!
Just left the dealership yesterday. They brought the finance manager and the store manager to speak with me and they both treated me like I was stupid referencing these things on the negotiation. I just ended up leaving I hate the process nowadays.
How frustrating! Fortunately, you got red flags early instead of late in the deal and acted on your instincts. If they don't want to deal with an informed customer, then it makes you wonder how much they were trying to take you for? You saved money just by walking out.
@JC-cu3sr yeah I didn't even discuss the ridiculousness of the deal. 2019 mitsubishi Outlander 32k miles 16600 (online). Get there, there's 42k miles on it and they were adding a non negotiable 3k warranty because "without the warranty we make nothing on the deal". Bait and switch and lied about the miles.
@@sarutobi43would’ve left on the miles alone
@melvinpretlow7921 they tried to get me out the door at 22,6 we discussed all the factors of why I'm not doing that and the manager says we'll meet in the middle at 21,8. I got up and left. 16,6 list price to 22,6 OTD is insane.
I called a dealership to see what was there best out the door price for a new 2024 Durango, the clown kept trying to get me to come down to the dealership for the best experience I’d ever had 😂
He kept trying to sell me other used vehicles and older Durango models, he refused to give me a price and kept telling me to come down to the dealership.
I told him I already knew exactly what I wanted and had test drove different vehicles so I did not need to go to the dealership I just needed an out the door price but he refused to give a price
Thank you gentlemen for all of the advice. I went to the dealer and told them “I need the Out The Door price” and they were shocked. I stood my ground and went back and forth with them. They said they were losing money on the deal but I showed them the lowest price they had online 2 weeks prior and explained that I would not accept anything above that price. The dealer came back and said ‘my manager said just give it to her’. Thank you so much!!!
Give it to them, Old Man!!!! No filters or censorship!!! We love you, Ray!

1) OTD
2) Pre-Approval
3) Know how long it's been on the lot
4) Trade-in value
5a) Incentives. Know them. 5b) Used cars. Pre-purchase inspection
a1) Research brand and model extensively (along w/a CarFax if used) to get a very good idea if the brand/model is reliable or to be aware of any "achilles heel" that model/year may have. During the PPI, your mechanic will check those known mechanical issues and either GREEN or RED flag the car. TRUST your mechanic no matter how much you LOVE the vehicle. It's a lot better to "lose" $200 for a PPI than to be stuck for 3+ years w/a car you cannot count on.
Great summary! Thanks!
Thank you
My question is about the Pre approval. Say you go to your local Bank or CU. Now you have a hard credit inquiry that lowers you credit score a few points. Now you go to the dealership with less leverage with their financing. No?
@@WoodmanNHgood question. Can’t wait for the pros to give the answer. I’m in the process now
I just bought a 2025 Honda pilot touring AWD for $51k OTD in CA where the tax state and local was $4,400. A dealership in Huntington was selling the same vehicle but a 2024 for $47.4k. Literally same vehicle, copy and paste. We saved the trip to Huntington by informing Spreen Honda that they could have our business but that they had to match the price. They did. Point is, a quick search of local and somewhat distant vehicles can be ammo to leverage a better deal. Know exactly what the vehicle is worth, how hot they are on the market, and that there will always be another deal so you can walk in confident that you can just walk out when the price isn’t right. You making it clear, by citing local markdowns and that you are willing to give your business to someone else, is how you have negotiating power. NEVER get fixated on one vehicle. KNOW there is always another vehicle out there.
The craziest part is you paid 47k for a Pilot
@@Freerider93Man $50k is the mean these days
@@jp3047 and who said you need to be on the mean? You can get a 2019 Honda pilot for 16k. Buying a new car for 50k is how you stay broke....yall better wise up!
You’re assuming that broke the bank. If you can’t afford $50k cash, which is what we did, financed for the dealer’s benefit and our reduced price, guaranteed no early payment fees, and paid it off. Your tip can serve people who need to learn to save money or can’t afford the higher price of new items.
@@Curteman20 Not assuming anything. It's just foolish to pay 50k for a car, even if you can afford it, when it's a depreciating asset that will be worth a little over half that in 4 years. The better play is to buy a used vehicle cash off lease. You can eat up the first 3-4 years of max depreciation and when you're bored I'll be there to pay cash. Thanks!
It's incredibly ironic you showed a Mazda when talking about days on lot because I just tried to buy a 2024 CX-5 that's been on the lot for 197 days and they refused to go under MSRP. I even mentioned the age and they seemed to not mind lol. Best part, this was one of about 15 exact models and they didn't even have it on their physical lot and had it in an "overflow" lot because it was, I quote from the salesman, "taking up space we needed for other cars." AND THEY STILL REFUSED TO NEGOTIATE!! lol
Buying a Lexus at the same NJ dealer you made famous about adding a crazy amount of fees. They added OPTIONAL SALES COMMISSION (NOT REQUIRED BY LAW). How are they getting away asking to tip the salesman. They say it’s a requirement to purchase no way to remove it. How can something that says optional on contract not be removed. Hear this is common at a DARCARS dealership.
It's not a legal requirement. They're lying/bluffing. I'd suggest shopping w/another dealer.
Love it how you dumb it down, reiterate and elaborate every time. Love u guys bless u. Does car edge work for Canada as well?
I asked a question on your Ray and Zach channel and Ray answered it perfectly at 0:25. This is the best car channel imo.

I have a 2017 Mazda 3 with only 25k miles. Carvana offering me only $4k less than I paid out the door. Dealership tried to offer me $2,400 less than Carvana. Told dealer “ok let me head down to Carvana and sell, i’ll be back in a week when the check clears”. Suddenly they were interested in entertaining what Carvana was offering me.
Happy birthday, Zach.
Went and drove a 2024 AWD Traverse. It is actually a very nice vehicle. I know they are 4bangers but I don't ever tow anything. Didn't talk about a trade in but wanted a OTD breakdown. The saleperson would not give to me. Said I could do that in the F&I office. I said I am not going in there without it. Very nice but still refused. I said I was this close to buying but sorry I will go elsewhere. I guess the idea is get you in there and hard sell you. I am not doing that ever again. Bought a Honda years ago that was part of the Hendrick auto group. Absolute worst experience ever for me. Learned my lesson. I hate them. I guess the ace in the hole for me is is I don't care if I get the vehicle or not. I will find the one I want at the price I want. Don't care when or where.
I would have asked the salesperson what his role at the dealership is?
Please do a video like this on cars that don't actually meet these guidelines. The Mazda MX-5 is already low-production and some models are order-only. This means no built up time on the lot. No piled up interest the dealer is excited to get out from under.
The other things are still solid. OTD, financing, etc.
I am told that my car buying strategy is flawed. I only buy new cars. Everyone tells me that I should buy a 3 year old car to minimize the depreciation. They also tell me that I should get a new car now because my car does not have Apple CarPlay and a fancy 13 inch screen. They also tell me to get a newer car because mine is older and repairs will put me in the poor house.
In the past 15 years most of these co-workers have bought and replaced 3 to 4 cars. I have a 19 year old car. I know the complete history of the car and I know that has been properly maintained. I feel that over 20 years my costs will be lower.
What do you think?
Might I suggest that you lease a car. You can lease a car for less than most people pay per month. If you're always driving a new car and always subject to having a payment why not cut that payment in half since you're just going to be giving the car back anyway. At least that's my take on it if you want to always be driving a new car
@@chrisbullarde Thanks for the input. I don’t need to have a new car just a reliable car. I have been driving mine for the last 14 years without a car payment. The only problem is dealing with people commenting on my culture (my parents were Scottish). I must say my South Asian coworkers are very complimentary.
Still amazed that I got a fair deal, with few games from the dealer for 2025. Transperancy. There was an
issue with a/c, where that reduced the amount for trade in, given the potential costs.
I just want to say thank you guys for that valuable information when I eventually pursue purchasing a new car.
Have a great day.
I guess with these rules to apply, you must be flexible on what kind of car and packages involved. I needed specific specs, for an entry car, and I was not going to budge. Therefore, I couldn't apply most of these things.
Hey guys, I listen to your older podcasts all day at work and they’re awesome thank you. I hear Kimberly talk about her speaking to or having consultations over the phone. Where is that an available service on your site? Can I pay to have a talk with her or someone there before I go to buy a car to answer some last minute questions I have?? Thank you
What are the logistics of a Pre-Purchase Inspection? You mention it as a contingency but how do you get the car from the dealership to the inspection? Drive it, obviously! But is it an overnight/multi-day thing? Good mechanics are busy. What should you sign and what shouldn’t you sign? Etc.
Last year when I did a purchase, I did 2 inspections. One from the seller (Private seller) and one that I researched myself. Both times, I drove the vehicle to the mechanics. You would wanna call ahead and make arrangements with the mechanic and communicate if the PPI can be done the same day. Yes, good mechanics are busy but call ahead.
Touch base with your mechanic well before you get serious about buying. Ask how you can best get a PPI (quickly) in a way that also benefits him or her. Often, if you've been with a Technician over 10+ years, they will honor that loyalty by helping you get the vehicle in/out asap. During that initial call, let him know the brands/models you're considering and ask him about that as well. Cheers!
That’s the problem with the inspection. Unless the dealership offers 7 day returns if you don’t like the vehicle. Then maybe someone could get you in within that 7 day period.
im going with the car buying service when Im ready. I cant even think about spending hours in a dealership!
Half a day, easy, in my experience.
You guys are so awesome!!❤
My dad was running the dealership back in the 60s if a car sit on the lot for more than 30 days. The used car manager may end up selling it to one of the salesman, but just taking it out of their checks.
Hi Zack, how do we figure out for how long has the car been in the lot? Do we need to ask the sales team? Or do they have anything clue on their site, Ad?
Now, how do I go about getting the car inspected outside of the dealership before I buy the car?
Thanks for your amazing tips on buying car !! dealership peoples are really monsters
Did my best to follow your guides. Purchased a 2024 Bronco Sport Outer Banks with tech package for $33k otd… traded my 2011 Avalanche for more about what I was hoping but more than KBB said. Think I did pretty good. Had about 10 dealerships I contacted but only 2 wrote down the OTD price. Couldn’t get the others to do it with one stating “you are just gonna go somewhere else to have them beat it”. Well, even without him writing it down I still got them to beat it! lol. Overall I think I did alright. Gave up the color I wanted though to get the best deal. I’m ok with that.
Anyone think that buying a 2020 Chrysler minivan a bad idea, I feel like I already know the answer but I really like this one I found on a dealers lot listed for 29k and it’s a hybrid (I love hybrids)- working on getting the OTD price now
The car that I want is not currently at the dealership in my current scenario. It's currently in transit so it hasn't technically been sitting on the lot. When does the dealer have to start paying on in-transit vehicles? How does haggling work in this scenario? Email tag? I'd rather not have to haggle in person.
In 2021 it was 2.5% for my new tundra. It’s ridiculous that it’s now 5 or 8 % and 75+ k out the door.
(In context): Historically those rates are not outrageous. It's the hyper-inflated MSRPs/"SRP" that grenades the entire financial equation (imo). The MSRPs are unobtainable.
People are still buying like crazy even though the interest is above 7%
What if the vehicle I’m looking to purchase is certified preowned from the dealer? And if it comes with a warranty, should I still get it checked by a mechanic?
Always good, helpful info from Ray and Zach! Who doesn’t love a birthday celebration? Happy early birthday Zach!
Do you still need to get financing beforehand if the manufacturer is offering 0% or a really low interest rate? I wouldn’t think so
Only as a backup plan for the possibility of being "declined" for approval by the OEM finance arm. There's never a bad time to have that pre-approval and knowledge of it with you as you shop. It helps/protects everything and hurts nothing. Just my opinion.
How do I get rid of the add on for vin etching, the dealer says it's mandatory
It's not mandatory that you pay for it. Dealers will always try to suggest various add-ons "are mandatory". Ask them if they're willing to lose the sale and a customer over "VIN etching".
I could always beat a customer’s bank or credit union rates and keep the financing. Always.
From my 20 years in the business, the sad reality is that the vast majority of buyers show up not having done any vehicle research and then get sold something, something.
Stupid!
ASK FOR THE OUT THE DOOR TOTAL ON HOW YOU PLAN TO PAY !!!!!!!!!!!! I learned my lesson about asking for JUST the out the door price -- dealer gave the lowest they would sell the car alright, i showed up and the rest of the numbers started adding up real quick - to be fair i had no clue these figures were goin to be added later - Dealer response; since you are not trading you wont get the 3k trade discount that we already applied to the otd price and you plan on not using our banks so you wont qualify for the 2k finance discount so your out the door TOTAL is 5k more than the out the door price we posted -- Incentives are not a benefit to those that dont qualify and 9/10 times will not benefit those that qualify when they factor in lowball trade offer loss and overpaying on coverages and rates
They lied to you to get you in the door. They had no intention of honoring the price.
This was hilarious and informative
I’m confused and have a question. When you ask for the out the door price, do you then try to get a better deal or do you take the deal.
Because of the incentives in Colorado Nissan are selling cars for $19 a month and $10 a month Nissan leaf you can get a an adapter for the car now
These are leases

When dealer say it has add-ons tint floor ceramic coating door edge guards roughly 2900.00 what one I do not want !! ??
To nitpick, interest rates aren't historically low, you're just comparing them to when they were historically high. It's like saying car prices are historically low because they are lower than two or three years when they were historically high.
In my opinion, interest rates are at a historic average level. The interest rates from late 2008 to early 2022 were frankly too low, so we are back in normal territory, in, my opinion. Sure, it was good for businesses to expand and to buy a house, but a lot of people abused it and over-bought. Also, there was no reason to keep money in safe instruments because they didn't make any money, so people either invested in riskier instruments or didn't save at all, using all their money on purchases. So, when the market went down, they got hit. And if they lost their job, it was a double whammy.
Don’t borrow money on depreciating liabilities ( they are not assets)
Interest rates from The Great Recession period up to the most recent FED rate hikes were "fake". A desperate measure by the Fed and Federal Govt. to avoid another crash or prolonged recession. It had to END, and the FED ended those rates much later than they should've.
One reason why our United States Federal Government has an HISTORICALLY out of control "annual budget deficit" and overall (cumulative) "National Debt". It took many years for inflation to set in, but when it finally came - whoa.
Historically low interest rates? That’s the most absurd thing I’ve heard

What should the response be when they ask if your paying cash, financing or have a trade in and how does that affect the otd price?
I just signed up to CarEdge which has cheat sheets on & scripts on how to respond to these questions
I saw it covered in a couple of older videos. It shouldn't be too hard to find with a search

Do it at an independent mechanic- about 1 mile away from the dealership so there not buddy buddy. Plus, you would wanna test drive the vehicle so you can knock two birds with one stone on that move.

Depending on the Monroney sticker (new cars), there will be the base price of the vehicle (varies by trim), the optional equipment charge (varies by options), and the delivery fee. All should be combined into the MSRP on the final line.
Yes. Delivery is always included in MSRP. If a dealer adds delivery to a line on a sales sheet, ask them to remove it. If they don’t, walk out.

What does "reissue" mean on a 2024 Chevy window sticker?
OEM/Factory Window Sticker = "The Monroney Label". Don't know. Does indicate something has been changed/updated by the MFR since the vehicle was released off the assembly line. Purely as a guess, I know some mfrs "updated" their MSRPs (lower) at times during the last 12 mos or so. In short, the new sticker indicates a (NON-DEALER) change. You could ask the sales manager and see what his story is.

I'm looking into new Honda CR-Vs and Toyota RAV4s and dealers are adding "dealer installed accessories" and charging $2K to $3K for basically items that only cost about $300. If that isn't bad enough, they have the audacity to charge $500 to $1,000 doc fees.
I was watching their old podcasts and I know they mentioned this. You don’t have to pay the full price of what they’ve added on. I think they said to say you don’t want it and since it comes already installed to take the price of them to dealer cost.
Dam, thats wild. Keep on consuming this content, digg around and you can discover what you can negotiate and what the dealers must charge
You might be in Florida. a) talk w/other Toyota and Honda dealers. And b) consider test-driving the Subaru Outback, Crosstrek, and/or Forester as options. You might be surprised as to how good the Subarus are, along with pricing and "dealer behavior". There are also "equivalent" Mazda models that might work well.
Just a suggestion. Good luck!
Is VIN etching non negotiable? Most dealerships I've been trying to talk to are hesitant to give any info about cost of the vehicle. It's very frustrating.
It’s negotiable! It’s too bad for them that they already did it, if you don’t want it tell them. If they don’t budge, walk.
Completely optional/negotiable. Dealer add-on. Get the charge removed or hit the dusty trail to their competitor.
You hear about no haggle price dealerships.are you better off buying from them.
ie: such as CarMax/no haggle. CM averages over $6k+ profit* per vehicle. That profit usually shows up in the sales price. So you're going to pay a bit more. OTOH, you see a vehicle you want and you pay the price that is posted. Additionally, you can get a "24 hour test drive" to take the vehicle home and get a feel for it. Beyond that, they have a "30-Day Money Back Guarantee" to protect against "buyer's remorse" up to 1,500 mi/vehicle returned in identical condition.
So, CarMax ain't for everybody - but it's easy to see how it works for many buyers imo.

Can i buy an OTD tshirt from caredge?
Question. Any comment or what do you think about The Homework Guy claiming you guys double dip by charging customers and dealers a fee?
We have addressed this before, we collect nothing from car dealers. Our only income comes our customers. Here is a recent video that Zach posted showing how we make money. studio.ruclips.net/user/videoXtcB9O5Huhk/edit.
I Hope that helps. All the best, Ray
Sounds like "The Homework Guy" is trying to ski in the wake of CarEdge. I'm not even going to give the guy a view/click. Loser.
My bank says they don’t do preappovals .
You might want to get a new bank.
I miss when the car market was normal at 2%-4% on interest rates smh.
We need an intro like that on afs
Thank god you guys are based in New Jersey!!
RAY WITH THE ALPHA ENERGY!
Same info, different day. Okay, I am OTD. 🙋♂️
HE'S DUST!
Any tips in how to get pre-approval and where? New in US planning to get a car. Should i get new or used? I am thinking honda CRV.
Credit unions are the best and 99% of the time offer the lowest interest rates.
Your local bank or credit union. You could start with the bank that holds your checking acct. Over a period of years, those relationships can be very helpful/important for consumers. Local is far more responsive/customer-oriented than any regional or national bank or credit union.
What do I do if no dealer near me has the color of the model I want?
You've got internet search as your friend. OR......you could use/pay the CarEdge guys to locate it, negotiate the deal for it, and have it delivered to you - if you don't feel up to the hassle and headaches. I think the CE concierge service is great for any buyer who may not "know cars" or who is so busy they don't want to waste time listening to salesmen/dealers lie to them. :o)
The CE fee, imo, provides a good value for the time, hassle, and ultimately money saved.
....
PS: I'm not affiliated with CarEdge in any capacity. Just a subscriber to their channel.
The most important indicators for a car are the reliability and the low TCO (Total Cost of Ownership). Colour is far less important as you can always change it.
I had a super-deal on an awful rat-grey (~$2 less than the red I liked), but I wrapped the car with what I liked most for ~$1k!
Yeah I screwed up. I tried to make a deal and got a 2021 Mazda with 24k miles for 27,800. The problem was that I should have looked at the web ad. It said all taxes and fees included for 27,485...I can't believe I sat there for 2 hours thinking I was getting a deal when a lost a couple hundred bucks because I didn't hold the to the ad.
It not a total loss, the dollar isn't really worth anything so at least I have an asset in place of a currency that won't is worth less and less by the month.
a) Don't kick yourself over it. Most of us have done similarly at least once.
b) There's a good chance you got a great vehicle that will last you quite a while.
c) File the experience away for future use. You're going to benefit from stuff like this.
Cheers!
@@j01150126 🤣🤣🤣 A car is a depreciating asset. It 100% is worth less every day you drive it! Like seriously who taught yall about finances?!?
The car is not an asset (maybe only compared to a lower-value-than-known currency).
But Mazda is a great choice.
Ray!! 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Just curious why I can’t find a Prius on the Car Edge website?
No flame, but you might be "doing it wrong" via their search. (edit) I just went over there and pulled up over "9000" used Prius. I didn't specify trim or "Prime" models.
Would be happy with the brand of coffee you drink Ray
I'm sure you said "Frosted Flakes" in the opening....Didn't you
I certainly meant too! All the best, Ray
@@CarEdge 🤣
My friend got a 2025 Camry OTD 31k, completely over email
2025 Camry are all hybrids I think.
❤🎉🎉
The man is going to,stroke out if he’s not careful.
Ray-Zach. What type of buying advantage is there to ordering a vehicle? Dealer doesn't have to worry about flooring the car, and it is a guaranteed sale, so one should be able to negotiate as good a deal if not better that one on the lot.
Scott perhaps this will help: caredge.com/guides/factory-order-a-car#google_vignette. All the best, Ray
Beware of dealer financing. They will almost always be able to get your purchased financed. They go to sub-prime where you could be paying 20% interest and up. Once they have the "cash" from the lender they no longer give a rats ass about you. If you find out you can not get pre-approved before you go to a dealer you will know the dealer will ream you up the wazoo on finance charges.
Most vehicles for new will have low interest financing on new vehicles.
@@rotart12arx3 Low interest rate for those that qualify. Bad credit risks do not get the low rates. They end up with the sub-prime lender's rates which are a lot higher.
@garfieldsmith332: If you've taken care of your FICO score and have a pre-approval in your pocket, this isn't an issue.
@@NVRAMboi Yes, If you are pre-approved you are not going to worry about getting financing from the dealership. Unless they can give you a better rate. It is the people who have a bad credit rating who get stuffed by the dealerships. If you have no per-approval and go to the dealership and they get a "hard decline" from a bank you will have to go to sub-prime. They will get an approval somewhere at a very high rate.
@@garfieldsmith332 Which makes sense. Are you going to loan your money out to someone who has proved they won't pay it back?
Sounds like lots of corruption in the car business. Romans 3:10 As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:
Philippians 2:11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
