- If you could write a Country song about prison, death, mother and sweetheart you were more or less guaranteed a hit song. This 1930's song is very much akin to 'The Convict And The Rose' and 'I'm Just Here To Get My Baby Out Of Jail' which Marty also recorded during his career. This kind of prison ballad was of course the precursor for later classics such as Merle Haggard's 'Mama Tried'and Curly Putnam's 'Green, Green Grass Of Home.'

The greatest voice ever in Country music , when Country was real , and a great Rock-a-Billy singer to boot ( "A White Sport Coat" or "Seventeen " .)
Darned good writer and piano picker and a master showman .
One of my greatest musical heroes ever---Mary was the best!
Marty is simply the greatest singer ever just love him thanks for this
...he captures your attention in every song..his voice will often be copied but will never be matched..
Bring me my little box of tissues. A great old song and a bit of a tear jerker. Never heard it before.
So touching
Gotta Love This Gem...Thanks...........bty.............Sid...!!!
7-29 and they cut down the ole pine tree seems to have something in common, I loved them--
The song is only available on a Bear Family box set and a vinyl album called 'Just Me And My Guitar' which was another release by Bear Family.
I simply can not believe the GOLD MINE of Marty Robbins songs you have given me. I thought I knew every one of his songs that he wrote/sang, plus recordings of other writers, BUT (ah yes, the proverbial and dreaded But) YOU have given me so much more and I am glad you have!!! My library of him singing has more than doubled. And that's not even counting the ones put on RUclips by Va HOSS. THANK YOU
Frances
The song is 'Southern Dixie Flyer' which came from his 1964 album 'RFD.' The only CD containing the track is on a Bear Family box set. You could always copy the song to your hard drive and then to an mp3 player.
HOW??? I am not computer literate and I do have an mp3 player but don't know how to "down" anything to "hard drive", what ever that is.
Great!
Sad song!
God bless the Bear Family!
Just lovely x
Funny you should say that Steve; one of the best Elvis impersonators was Jimmy Ellis who had an uncanny vocal resemblance to Elvis, but his favourite singer was actually Marty Robbins!
There's enough of the karaoke kings murdering Marty's music on here by the way don't you think?!!
what album is this from? could someone tell me?
I am looking for the words to a song (I’m sure it was sung by Marty) called something like: ‘The Whistle of that Southern Dixie Flyer’. Can anyone help me find it?
