    I just took about a 4-5 mm piece of veg tan leather and stuck it in a pot full of pre-boiled water. I didn't boil it, but let it sit for no more than 5 mins. When it came out I used a clothes pin to make it into a circular cuff-like shape and let it air harden overnight. It shrunk, of course, but the thickness increased by 2-3 mm and it is rock hard. I tried stabbing it with a good quality hardened and tempered dagger and it would not penetrate. Haven't tried cutting it, but I bet it would provide pretty good protection against cuts and reminds me of a good quality plastic.

  • @rashkavar

    Well , I think it's still safe to call leather an effective armor. It's certainly note late medieval plate mail, but then, late medieval plate mail is no substitute for a tank's armor, either, or some fancy futurey supersuit like the Halo armor. It does significantly better than nothing even if it can't stop the best cuts.
    Plus, good luck hitting an attentive foe with one of those fully wound up strikes. No matter what your weapon is, against a foe with similar training, you're far more likely to get glancing blows. On an unarmored opponent, a glancing blow leaves a bleeding flesh wound, which adds a bit more pain and blood loss each time you get one. Thus, your enemy is a bit weaker and a bit more distracted as the battle progresses. The leather would do fine for cutting that effect down greatly, without hugely weighing the person down.

      The leather armor actually holds up much better than I imagined. However I feel one strike from a skilled axeman with that dane axe could chop half or a full arm clean off with that leather.... The tree is jut too hard. Leather armor can also suit better with climate change. It won't rust, provide warmth against cold and shelter the rain. It also make escape easier.

    • @rashkavar
      @rashkavar 8 лет назад +1

      Scharlach Nachtfalter Fair point, but like I said, landing a solid blow on an enemy that's actually moving around, trying to parry and fighting back is kinda tough to start with. And it's not going to make you all but invincible the way high quality late-medieval plate does. I'd say it's the poor man's chainmail - wards off a lot of stuff, but not everything. Cheaper than chain because making all those links is a much more labor intensive process than curing leather, but not as durable or as effective.

      +rashkavar the leather in that video is much thicker than normal

    • @rashkavar
      @rashkavar 8 лет назад

      "normal" as defined by modern marketing standards. Given the lack of need for armor of the non-kevlar-and-ceramic variety in the world today, it's entirely possible the leather we produce today is significantly thinner than might have been used for armoring purposes back when weapons technology was not what it is today.
      Also, while I don't know much about the leather production process (animal skin+nasty chemicals=leather is about all), if you can't produce thick enough leather naturally, you can layer it and stitch it together such that it effectively functions as a single, thicker piece.
      Either way, a person trying to craft leather armor would come up with a solution. That's what humans do.

    i thought war axes hadcurved / crescent blades because it makes it a lot easier to hit and forces even an oblique hit to transfer all the force onto a small point ( primary contact is always a single tangential point to the arc), but not designed so much for slashing. A shield bash using the edge hurts so much for the same reason.

    I like the way you are testing this leather and it make me remember a leather armor used by patagonian natives. It was made by up to 7 layers of relatively thin but hardened leather (whith fur inward) usually Guanaco leather (a large lama) The layers where tightly stitched and covered the torso and upper legs.
    This armour standed against spanish colonial weapons and later wars against Argentinean and Chilean expeditionary armies. Althoug they cant stop bullets; swords, sabers and spears where the main weapons used by colonial forces here. (After this history lesson) I wonder if there is some similar use of the leather in northern history and if you like to consider do some test on some similar leather arrange.
    (sorry for my awfull english)

      Maces and spears are even easyer to use, yes. But an axe can be used to build a house too. And if I fail to make it cut it's still sort of a mace. And a poleaxe is sort of like a spear.

    I seem to learn that a cut toward the edge of the leather is way more effective seeing as the force of the cut is just as high but consentrated over less leather. Not a big suprice, but I belive thats why some of the cuts did so well.

    If I may make a suggestion, it looks like you just used 14 oz untreated leather you can actually case the leather or wet it and then after you let it dry a little you can throw it into an oven at 200 degrees ferinhieght for about an hour or so and that will significantly harden the leather.

    Though, when hitting with such a large axe, such as the Danish axe, I can't imagine it would matter too terribly much if you sliced through the armor or not. I'm not sure if I'm over estimating the force behind that weapon, but I'd imagine that even without slicing through the armor, with a center of mass strike, you'd probably still break the ribs underneath.

  • @antonmarkov2893
    @antonmarkov2893 8 лет назад

    i think that the reason why the battle axe cut trough the leather 2 times was because the first time the hit had less area of contact and the second time it hit the same place for second time.

    Although they’re slow this really speaks to the power of a wood axe! I wonder how often they’ve been used as weapons. Certainly not ideal but it would seem to have some advantages and good lick parrying it!

    Few last cuts with "Dane axe" were made on the edge of the leather: 2:20, 2:50. If you cut on the edge, you will easiry make deeper cut. "Gransfors Bruk Scandinavian forest axe" hit in to the middle of leather, there is much harder to cut trough. I think, this is not so good for comparing the potential of these two axe.

    Skall, you should do a video on a longquan sword or two from Amazon. Swordsage did a video on one not to long ago and he seemed to be pretty satisfied with it for the price point. Right around $150. I know you're not as interested in Chinese swords as he is but for a budget blade i think it would be a nice review. I recently ordered one exactly like Swordsages for personal testing. I'll try to let you know what i find.

    I'd like to see the leather strapped to a broom handle (as a surrogate for human ribs) just to see if the leather in any way mitigates the kinetic impact, regardless of any penetrating damage.

    The only issue I see is the slicing axe only seemed to effectively cut when it hit an edge of the leather, i dont know if it would effect results much but seems to me it would meet less resistance there. Thanks for the videos I do enjoy watching them

  • @WastelandSeven

    Interesting. Though, I am thinking if the target is moving or your don't get an oblique hit they might not be wounded enough to put them out of the fight. I'm also wondering about something I heard of but, have never seen replicated, which was leather dipped in boiling wax. Not sure how that would be helpful though, unless something was done more than just boiling.
    I'm thinking another reason the wood axe cut through it so well was that all the mass is right behind the edge, whereas the Dane axe's weight is spread out over the edge.
    All that being said, leather would not be a first choice for defense...or even a third or fourth if you had a choice in the matter.
    Excellent video as always!

    I'm not a tree hugger but I am a bit of a troll resin is technically the blood of a tree during the winter when it gets cold resin is push to the outside of the the part of the tree underneath the bark because it freezes so technically you made the tree bleed and you hurt it

    Keep in min the amount of force which isn't absorbed by the armor. It'd be cool if you could get a pressure sensor or something, so you could see if the strikes would be hard enough to break ribs.

  • @IronRooRoo
    @IronRooRoo 8 лет назад

    You have to consider that the thing underneath the leather (a tree) has much more resilience than a human body. It's probably going to completely penetrate the armour, but even if not, the blunt force alone will cause major damage. That is why layered cloth gambesons were a thing, and badass sleeveless leather vests were not.

    Hello Skallagrim, I usually do not comment your videos, but this time something has surprised me. I know you're not a professionnal but through your videos i kept seeing the same professionnal rigor that lacked in this video. In fact, you only tried the woodaxe like a piece of metal on a woodstick and it lacked many specific techniques ! For exemple, you could have screwed a pommel to your Dane axe, that you could have then unscrewed and thrown at the piece of leather, confusing him so you could end him up rightly.
    I love your videos and greatly hope for improvments in the future !
    All my love,
    MrWhat.

      +gosonegr that axe could get stuck in the dragons skin, although it may not seem like it the other axe would be better after you were trained to use it properly than it might be more effective, a chopping axe might be good at penetrating armor, but the other axe is good at slicing, which if you can do properly (skall barely did) it would preform better at slicing thru the armor.

    • @Fogyt121
      @Fogyt121 8 лет назад

      +Moth You can't slice through dragonscales. They're like plate armour. The Dane axe would get stuck actually, because of the much thinner edge, whereas the Small Forest axe would crack/partially cut the scale and bounce off.

    I'm not too surprised that the dane axe cut less well than the forst axe, certainly if i were using the long axe i'd try to use that advantage to aim towards less protected parts, or bare skin. then again, you could just use the impact to beat your enemy into submission. that's a decent weight of metal on the end of a four or five foot handle, with a relatively small impact point... could be used quite effectively even if the blade never made it through the leather.
    Overall, i'd prefer a smaller axe though, seeing as you can just keep it in your belt for an occasion when you just need to deliver a hefty tap to a head, or whatever presents itself around an enemy shield.

    forget about the tree, I'm more worried about the axe, especially that dane axe. as someone who works in forrests I know all too well how much damage resin can do to the blade of a tool (I've had to reforge my parang a few times after some encounters with hardened resin, and file more than a few chips out of axe blades)

  • @Warclam
    @Warclam 8 лет назад

    It looks like the best cuts with the Dane axe are getting the same sort of effect as the barbed hunting arrow. The wood axe of course just obliterates the poor leather. "I cut through trees, son, you think a little hide will stop me?"
