A new generation of Syrian children: the story of Hussein

“My parents sometimes talk to me about Syria. They tell me what happened in Syria and how it was before the current war,” says 12-year-old Hussein.
He is a Syrian refugee raised in Jordan.
“I was born in Syria, but I came to Jordan when I was 6 months old,” he adds.
For over a decade, Jordan has been a beacon of hope for hundreds of thousands of Syrians fleeing war. Today, the country hosts over 640,000 registered Syrian refugees, half of whom are children.
Since 2011, over 212,000 Syrian refugees have been born in Jordan.
The first generation of Syrian refugees knows no other home, a number that grows each month, with an average 120,000 new births registered in 2023.
