Ahhhh, now THIS one I can really relate to. When this was released, here in the UK, I was but a slip of a lad at the tender age of 17. I'd just secured a residency gig at a holiday centre, playing drums in the resident band for the summer on a small island in the far south of the UK (I also met my wife there - we're still together). This song, to any Brit who lived through that period, was the song that defined the summer of 1967, when we'd read in the newspapers about San Francisco, and the hippy movement, and pass flowers to anyone we met who seemed to be having a bad day.
The song meant nothing, really, it was just a bunch of words that rhymed, sometimes, and had a slightly sad, nostalgic, feel-good factor. But that first Hammond organ note screams "1967" at you.
    Thanks for posting.

It tied with Bohemian Rhapsody in 1977 as the best British pop single from 1952-1977 and is listed no. 57 in Rolling Stone’s top 500 songs of all time !

Wow! What an amazing version of this song Sue! I remember this song when it came out back in the 60's - my dad was completely taken with it and if it was on Top of The Pops, we had to sit in silence while he watched it.
The orchestra and choir just add so much to an already fantastic song.

    Spectacular performance
My first ever real concert was 3rd Feb 1981 : Eric Clapton
Gary Brooker played keyboards in Eric Claptons band on that tour and he sang Whiter Shade of Pale mid concert and Eric on guitar / gary on Organ : Rose colored glasses over passage of time but I remember it as every bit as good as what i just watched.
When this was released it was a game changer but only for 2 weeks
WSOP was released 12 May 1967
2 weeks later 26 May : Sgt. Peppers was released

This song brings me back to my early Junior High years!! Love the 60’s & 70’s music!! Paul McCartney was once asked if there was one song he wished he had written .. he replied, A Whiter Shade Of Pale. It was the song that Paul & first wife Linda Eastman, danced to on their date!! 💚💜💙 Would love to hear CRIMSON AND CLOVER! ☘️

Apparently youtube didn't like that I put a link in my other comment (which i'm doing again) & it was deleted, so I'll put it here now, leaving the link out -- thanks.
The concert was filmed at the Ledreborg Castle in Denmark w-the Royal Danish Concert Orchestra. It has been "the most-played song in public places of the last 75 years." There have been some misconceptions surrounding the meaning of the song - see ---- for the interview w-composer/lead singer Gary Brooker & writer Keith Reid. Gary was founder of the band begun in '67; he passed away in February of 2022, Keith passed in March of 2023. It is also said that Reid was "going to reveal the true meaning before he died" but he died before he explained anything. Many people believe it was about a drunken one-night stand. Contrary to popular belief, the song is not a direct copy or paraphrase of any music by Bach but was inspired by & does reference Bach's "Sleepers, Wake!" and "Air on the G String!" As per Reid, the line "as the miller told his tale" is definitely not a reference to Chaucer's Miller's Tale. Reid has repeatedly explained he had never read The Canterbury Tales when he wrote A Whiter Shade of Pale. Procol Harum is said to be the name of a friend's cat. The name is a mis-spelling of the Latin phrase Procul Harun (roughly meaning "far beyond these things"), or that it was a corruption of Procellarm, a vast ocean on the Moon. In Roman Times Vestal Virgins were priestesses and acquired their name after Vesta. the goddess of the hearth and home. It was their duty to not only keep the home fires burning but to also remain a virgin for 30 years. AMAZING SONG - AMAZING GARY!
COURT CASE: Matthew Fisher, a founding member and the organist of Procol Harum, won a High Court battle over who wrote “A Whiter Shade of Pale.” He played organ on the 1967 recording of the hit, which was long credited to lead singer Gary Brooker and lyricist Keith Reid, and Fisher argued that he wrote the distinctive organ melody. And on December 20, 2006, Justice William Blackburne ruled that Fisher was entitled to 40 percent of the copyright. Fisher had wanted half (50%) but the court decided that lead singer Gary Brooker’s input was more substantial.

Imagine sitting outdoors on a summer eve in Denmark and getting this beautiful elixir for the ears. You don't expect Gary's powerful voice in this serene orchestral setting. Let's see Kanye West do this, LOL!!! Even with a full orchestra and chorus the vocal, organ, drums and piano shine through. Love the glissando on the organ @6:37!!! So many interpretations. Some say it relates to the "Canterbury Tales" with references to the miller and the vestal virgins. My interpretation may be WAY off base but I see it as a drug reference. "Her face at first just ghostly turned a whiter shade of pale" (the pallor of death), "though my eyes were open they might as well have been closed", "the ceiling flew away". Regardless it is a beautiful performance of a beautiful song. Who writes stuff like this now? "Conquistador" by Procol Harum with the Edmonton Philharmonic is another beautiful presentation. I never heard a cover of this either. Like you, I can't imagine it!!! Curious if Chelsea has seen this. I have seen it a dozen times.

..I seem to be in the vast minority with this one, Sue, based on the large number of music critics and fans ( including you and those posting here ), in that I don't think of this in such massively glowing terms .. I think it's a good song, but there's many thousands I would rather listen to .. The feel of it, particularly the organ sound, used to actually somewhat depress me, reminding me of being in church ( which I found boring ) and funeral music .. I got past that, and I now like the song, but it's still nothing particularly special for me .. But I can acknowledge this is a pretty good live performance .. So it looks like we have another spicy difference of opinion here, Sue !😉😄

Forever keeping it spicy, my friend 🌶🥰🤣💜

That's a new and if I may say so, a nonsensical. Interpretation. The lyricist, Keith Reid, said that the lyrics weren't meant to be taken literally and that he was simply trying to create a mood by putting together a series of phrases. Think of it as an abstract painting-----it is whatever you want it to be.
