      I have to agree. Gary (RIP), the Hammond, that haunting oboe, and the world class choir and orch made for an ageless perfomance. Definitely one of my Top Ten.

    He is the original singer of this song. Gary Brooker was the lead singer of Procol Harum and recorded this song in 1967 with his group, Procol Harum. The original did not have the orchestra, and featured the Hammond organ you hear in this. Procol Harum was a rock group, not "easy listening," by any stretch of the imagination. Sadly, Gary Brooker died in 2022. But thank goodness this remarkable live performance in 2006 is saved for all to enjoy. I think it's much better than the original recording from 1967..

    It is inspired by J.S. Bach's "Air on the G-string" - check it out. In Denmark we have a lot of castles and this venue is the park at such a castle. We have a lot of summer concerts as this - with chairs from the garden and wine and a bit to eat - it is a nice way to spend a summer evening. When asked what song he wish he had written, Paul McCartney answered "A Whiter Shade of Pale" ! The soundtrack to my youth.

    I was literally laughing at the beginning when you were saying "protocol". Thanks for doing this, I was the one who made the request and you can tell your wife that just like my other request for the Bill Henderson performance, it was more about providing evidence that some people can maintain their vocal chops as they age unlike Geddy.

      Thanks 👍👍 yeah absolutely. As Justin Hawkins said its luck of the draw. There are examples, like this one. Some Rush ppl are sensitive tho 😂

    • @obelisk21
      @obelisk21 Год назад

      @@JustinPanariello I think the other thing that went against Geddy is the massive amount of touring Rush did when they were younger. They were literally performing 200 nights a year in the early days at a time when a lot of Rush songs had him hitting some extremely high notes with a lot of vocal power. He probably did some cumulative damage that caught up with him as he aged.

    There are a couple of "promotional films", early music videos, on RUclips from 1967 when this song came out.
    I first heard this in '69 or '70 back in middle school. Great song.
    Sadly we lost Gary this year.

    Whiter shade of pale, is one of the most perfect songs with Gary's Voice. The hammond organ part just makes it perfect in a way that no other song is. It is the most perfect song ever produced.
    I think you both didn't realize an interesting point of that video, did you two notice at 6:26 how the man playing the Hammond Organ, the amazing pianist of Procol Harum, Josh Philips, is shaking from his hands probably due to the pressure of playing to so many people live, and doesn't miss a single note?

      Procul Harum was a band that first recorded this song in 1967 and Gary Brooks is the original vocalist. A brilliant composition for these young people way back then. There are so many unheralded musicians from those days. Truly talented. Gary died a few years ago. Do some homework and you will discover a lot of groups. Moody Blues, also British others too.🦄 Kate Australia.

    i think a procul is a Roman official - well no but - there's a Latin tongue twister for it: "SI PROCUL A PROCULO PROCULI CAMPANA FUISSET, NUNC PROCUL A PROCULO PROCULUS IPSE FORET." and in Inglese it means "If Proculus were far from the bell, Proculos would be far from Proculus". Translation of "Procul" is "Far off, far from" So it's not a Roman official like "pro-consul". Now the word "harum" may also be a Latin word. mnope but there's the expression Harum-Scarum' from the 1700's that means "reckless, irresponsible'.
