Not sure who the person was, that said you should "pause and talk", and I can't speak for anyone else, but I have unsubscribed from quite a few reactors for that very reason. "I" want to see the person's 'reaction'. On their faces while they listen and watch. How their eyes and mouth react (or if they scratch their head, LOL) tells me far more than their words could. I very rarely watch videos by "vocal coaches", "voice teachers" or other similar people, because I'm just your ordinary music lover, and all the technical aspects are lost on me. I know what I like, and when I "see" someone else enjoying the same music, they don't need to go in to detail to explain why. Thumbs up for your reactions. (and your Gumbo video, LOL)

I agree. Some reactors seem to have an uncanny ability to pause at the precise millisecond at some crucial key change in the music which kills the flow. For instance, at the famous rock 'drop' in Bohemian Rhapsody. Just before the operatic section reaches the crescendo and we're about to rock-out, yep, hit the pause button!.

I agree if you want the pause and talk after every line the go to the gajillion other reactors who do. I understand in some circumstances you have to to avoid copyright strikes but other than that let it play then give your critique

This performance is a refinement of an art form, Brilliant. That being said listening to the original version in context also tells you what a classic it really is. great to see the masters putting in best ever performances.
I'm not disagreeing with you but I think he should have listened to the original first. The original is the version that launched the song to the world.

I was 16 when this song came out in May, 1967. The debut single of Procol Harum sold ten MILLION copies worldwide. This version in 2006 featured the band playing with the Denmark Symphony Orchestra. The arrangement starts with the melody played in C Minor which immediately evokes a bittersweet feeling. The oboe player is soloist and just before Gary Brooker's vocal, the orchestra plays a beautiful Tierce de Picardie, moving the melody into the major key. Brooker's voice, like vintage wine, has improved and matured with age. The introduction of the Hammond B3 and drums at second verse is exquisite. The audio engineers did a superlative live mix of a full orchestra, male and female choir, piano, organ, guitars, bass, drums and lead vocal. As a performance, it borders on the mystical, transporting the listener to a magical trance-like experience. Hallelujah!
You're certainly not missing out on anything by listening to this version, except a certain nostalgic feeling many of us have for the original. This was great.

He sang this when he was about 18 yrs old and it was a hit - he didn't lose an ounce of talent and sounded even better. Great song and performance. People have been trying to interpret the song for 50 yrs now.

I bought that single back in 1967 and the song still gets me. How many times has Gary Brooker sung that song. I believe this is the best version bar none. Sad that he just recently passed. He will be missed.

I was 14 in 67' (now 69) and, when I first heard this song, I fell in love with it. I agree with you that this 2006 version magnificent! I also liked that Ty listened to the song and did not interrupt. As a side note, about a year ago, I learned that the reference to "The Miller's Tale" was a tale written by Chaucer in the book The Canterbury Tales from the late 1300's. It was written in Middle English. When I checked out the book from the library, the copy I received was written using the original Middle English language. Needless to say, it was very hard to read but well worth the trouble. Take care Marcia.

Lead singer Gary Brookers voice sounds even better to me now 40 years later. This is definitely better than the original album version, in my opinion. Although I love both. Just a preference for this one. His voice is more deeper, soulful, raspy. Like a fine aged bottle of wine, only gets better!! I saw a 2018 performance from him and he sounded the same! Amazing! Another great song by Procol Harum is "Conquistador" there's an album version from 1971 from Edmonton, Canada.Geat drums, great guitar, great singing. They do a version in this concert. You should check them both out, the original one is also live on the album from the 1971 Edmonton concert. Great stuff! Love your channel Ty. I know when you scratch your head you really love it! 😁✌

Totally agree mate, considering the time span from first release to this live concert Gary Brookers voice is still brilliant, if not even stronger with time and the band still sounds tight and throw in an orchestra and choir it became fresher, cleaner, and simply beautiful. Loved the video when I first saw it on You tube a while back and glad it was requested for all MRM fans to enjoy, and any who say different can just talk to the hand

When it come out in 1967 he sounds the same as he did in this awesome version but in 2018 he was messing around in a what looks like a small venue he is older but his voice sounds the same. He has kept his voice in tip top shape. Love this song and this version rocks.❤💞⚘✝️
Gary Brooker is just an incredible singer/pianist/songwriter & has done so for YEARS!! Procol Harum came out in 1967. Through some years they would break up but Gary was ALWAYS there, just fantastic!!!! xx

Procol Harum is wonderful. Gary’s voice is still beautiful. Age hasn’t changed his singing abilities at all. I love all his music. He is a very handsome man for his age. God bless this wonderful talent. His guitar player is still great too. It makes me cry, how our lives go by so fast. I like this rendition so much. ❤️🌹❤️

I have listened to the original version hundreds upon hundreds of times over my 52 years. Then, out of the blue, I found this song about 3 months ago. Originalists can pout or kick-and-scream all day about this, but Gary's voice has aged like a fine wine and has turned this masterpiece into a masterpiece for the Ages. I play this version at least twice a day now. It haunts me, it brings tears to my eyes most times, it makes me smile so broadly, it lifts me out of the battlefield that is my soul. The original version was my brothers favorite song and I truly wish I would have known about this version for his wake...

The studio version of this song always tugged at my heart with it's exquisite melody. this live version with all the lush vocals and instrumentation moves to a masterfully crafted,soul stirring, ethereal experience. one of my top favorites from the '60's evolved into the top favorite of my list.

This song is a modern (well, 1967) update of some old to ancient inspirations. The overall melody is inspired by "Air on a G String" by Johann Sebastian Bach (you can pick this out especially in the solo oboe line played during the orchestral prelude). The setting for the lyrics is a tavern where locals and travelers/pilgrims would mingle in the evening as told in the 14th century "Canterbury Tales" by Geoffrey Chaucer, of which "The Miller's Tale" was one specifically. The Vestial virgins reference is even older, going back to ancient Roman times. They were priestesses of the Roman goddess of the hearth Vestia. Vestia was also considered a fertility goddess, so it is one of those contradictory requirements that the novice priestess were required to take a vow of celibacy for 30 years before entering service to the cult. But back to this song. Gary Brooker's voice has aged very nicely and that Hammond organ line became hardwired into my synapses decades ago. The original studio version is wonderful, but this concert recording losses nothing in translation. If any '60s rock ballad is deserving of a symphonic orchestra and choir accompaniment, it is "A Whiter Shade of Pale".

I remember when the original was released in 1967 and I fell in love with this song. I say without hesitation or reservation that I love this glorious orchestral and choir backed version better. Gary’s voice actually sounds better at the age of 68 that he was in this performance.

This *is* the definitive version of this song. It is different from the original 1967 hit single, which was recorded in a studio without the symphony orchestra and choir. The hit single started with the Hammond B3 organ with the Leslie, which was featured prominently in the mix. But Gary Brooker’s incredible voice is what made this song so unforgettable, and he has aged like a fine wine. He was 22 when he recorded the original version. He’s 61 in this video. And there’s another video on RUclips of him singing this song in 2018 when he’s 73 and he still sounds like a million bucks. What a treat. I’m so glad you did a reaction to this. There’s another song that’s on RUclips from this same 2006 outdoor concert in Denmark worth checking out. It’s Procol Harum’s other big hit, “Conquistador,” which *was* originally recorded with a symphony orchestra.

An Iconic Instrumental writer and an Iconic singer, Gary Brooker sounds unbelievable . I think he actually sounds better 39 years later because his voice has deepened and really sings from the heart and soul. I hope God gives this man many more years blessing us with his voice.
