It's good to see the backlash against too much reliance on screens starting, but the motoring press has been very slow on the uptake on this. For me the rot really set in with the Golf Mk 8, but when it launched it attracted barely a murmur of criticism. Volvo are also being given a very soft ride for the screen-dependent direction they're going in.
It you watch my reviews since around Mk8 Golf/ID. 3 you'll see I've been increasingly critical of the new infotainment systems in general. These days I have two categories: bad and less bad :)
In 2021, when I changed my car, I didn't want any touch screen. Fortunately Mazda agreed that fumbling with a touch screen while driving was not a good ideea so now I drive a Mazda 3.
Hi Marek, I always enjoy your content & style of presentation - keep up the good work! 👍🏼 My new F66 MINI Cooper has the wonderful OLED display that you showed briefly in this video… and I would NOT go back to the analogue gauges and controls of my previous F56 MINI. At night, it's easy to change the display so that there's a black background… and, of course, OLED delivers excellent, solid black - without any background glow. BTW: I think the Mercedes 'Hyper-Screen' set-up is nonsensical… and it already looks like a very old 'technology of the future concept'. I'd never buy a Tesla because of Musk - and, while that brand has (I'm told) good infotainment software, the lack of a display behind the steering-wheel is a real safety issue. I'm confident that future legislation will insist that cars must display all important information in front of the driver… just as my car does on the pop-up HUD. All the best.
My first Lexus Is 220d had also a big satnav touch screen and multi media. Honestly it lasted the lifetime of the car. But luckily the gauge cluster was still analoge.
Nice cast, many older drivers are not really fond about the screens oké for the satnav we may need one since working on the smartphone is neither a very safe option. But in front of rhe drivers an analoge way of reporting the speed and tacho info is the best i think. Never thought that indeed the safey items are the reason for the big screens. Some carmakers do it rright like in the new big mazdas there id a digital screen but the info is shown in an analoge way. On the other hand the mercedes and bmw implementation is one of the poorest. Way to much info and too bright colors in my opinion. Not to speak of the ridiculous ambient lighting nowadays. We should start a petition against the screens 😂
I sincerely hope that good old mechanic will come back to certain extent, not all of it. Not only the buttons are sometimes more practical (temperature...), but also looks better. Can you imagine classical analogue cluster in Bentley Continental GT? Pure beauty and elegance. And not only there... Peace
I own Seat Arona. It has analogue speedometer and analogue tachometer, also manual climate regulation and a LCD for navigation, entertainment and some other controls. IMHO, the car must have analogue speedometer and tachometer, because during driving if you press a button on steering wheel accidently and will not be able to see your current speed, you can receive a penalty or it can cause accident. Greetings from Lithuania.
Who knows, in the future all information will be in the windshield and you control the climate by moving your eyes. And then the self driving cars will arrive and you can just watch a movie. And next: teleportation! Anyway, I just wanted to leave a comments and give you a like :)
If a manufacturer develops didital screen layouts for more expensive trims and keeps analogue guages for lower trims, this is more costly for them. Its obvious that the analogue guages are only being fitted to encourage buyers to choose the higher more profitable trims.
I've been renting EVs to get a feel for them and the interaction with these screens and I have to admit, I wanted to punch the main screen of the Teslas I drove after 30 mins. Luckily I had my daughter with me to go through the screens to adjust the vents and make small adjustments to various things like mirrors. Scratch Tesla off my list of cars to buy.
@@MarekDrivesENG I guess. But typing in a charging destination shouldn't be an adventure in itself. And this whole BS, "well you can talk to the car" thing with your family in the car is goofy. Some basic functions like volume knobs, buttons for mirrors, seat heaters, vent adjustments.... In the end, I'm just not into the whole my car is now tech thing. I tried using the self drive thing and it made me nervous. Never knowing what the car might do is nerve racking. The EV I liked most was the i4 40 Xdrive so far.
Tell me about it. The other day I was picking someone up from destination A. There was already another person in the car with me. As we picked up the person from destination A, I wanted to input destination B using voice commands. Fuck that, because my two passengers have to greet each other and yap about shit, and can't understand, why I need them to shut up for 15 seconds 🤣 It was easier to put everyone in danger, and do it by hand without stopping the car (no place to stop, and someone in a hurry right on my bumper).
Hi Marek. I added a screen to my used 2014 i30. It is better than the original, but it has its own problems. Sometimes, it skipps radio stations. It takes time to load when you start the car. Even with the new battery, the car runs out of juice quickly. If left sitting for over a week, the battery is dead. I think this has something to do with it.
Nobody does. Of course, the idea is to get you to pair your car to an app, save everything the cloud, and then all you have to do is hope the app and infotainment don't crash 🤣
@MarekDrivesENG Hmm..I think I'm just getting old fashioned. Don't need a car connected to the internet, babysitting and spying on me...Just basic info, hands and feet on controls, eyes on the road and most important Freedom of choice.
I recently heard a statistic that European buyers are holding on to their cars a couple of years longer, than they used to. Part of that is attributed to uncertainty regarding electrification, but I think the current safety system requirements and resulting amount of electronics inside the car is what is putting people off from purchasing or leasing new cars. You really have to be rich to get something from a limited production run that doesn't have to adhere to these regs.
@@MarekDrivesENG Agree. My car is relatively old, but for the reasons mentioned above, plus lack of choice and options (not so fond of SUV and Xover) I think I will keep my car longer.
...and if screens, please dont be so stupid to make it glossy and even less practial. Light should not in any case reflect on the screen surface. Surface should be matt - some car producers know it, but some are completely out of mind, insisting in fancy glittering stupidity. In is not practical, nor safe. We are paying tousands of euros for 'needed' safety systems, but nobody pays attention to unsafety glittering distraction? It seems money is only important 'safety' factor fpr car producers. Peace.
I drive since 1970 almost daily and find all that 'assistance' cr@p quite annoying and unnecessary. I have the 'screen' inside my head and operate everything without looking at buttons and levers, just like a trained musician does not look at strings or keys. All this digital gaudy Disneyland dashboard junk is just profit driven marketing. Just learn how to drive with Your head and senses. Your limbs will follow naturally.
None. Never had one with that crap. Seriously, an analogue instrument panel on a digital screen looks horrible and fake. Either you do it like the Citroen's (GS/A, C4) and original Twingo or if you are going to use analog displays, use a physical needle.
Oh boy! I see RUclips is making everything better :/ Click the gear icon at the bottom of the player, and set audio track to original. This is a new feature, which I didn't ask for, but I assume RUclips is switching audio to your browser language. Please check your settings. Maybe there's a way to disable this feature permanently. I'll also see, what I can to on my side, because I understand how this could be annoying, and even off putting to some viewers. Thanks for letting me know!
I have often wondered if we r approaching another unsafe at any speed era courtesy of musk
Expensive cars should have analogue gage clusters. Screens feel cheap.
Like expensive watches.
In my opinion Mazda has the best balance between screen and controls. Hope they will not follow the industry cheap solutions trend.

For me, the prime infotainment was VW's 2014-2019 era. Fast, simple + HVAC controls.
Those were the days.
I do enjoy your talking heads videos....

You've spelt screens wrong, on your desk!
“Sreens” 😂😂😂

Is it like an aftermarket Android infotainment device?
Too much information distracts from safe driving. Only on-screen control is dangerous for safety as well. I don't understand how it is even legal?
