Your thermostat is falling out of its little machined spot on the block, it’s very common on these engines. You get it lined up perfectly and when installing the cover it moves just a little and causes the cover to be slightly lifted and not sit flat. A small amount of rtv on the thermostat to glue it in place helps. Cool build!
"That intercooler setup looks awesome! It pairs so well with the 'reclaimed materials' exhaust we built for it-had a lot of fun putting that together in our video. Might have to revisit it down the line and add a Helmholtz resonator!"
@@FluidMotorUnionI designed and fitted one to a 911 C4S a few years back due to drone on an aftermarket exhaust, it mostly fixed the issue. The biggest problem was the size of the canister and where to fit them to cancel out the frequency I needed. I ended up installing them alongside the back boxes under the bumper. I’ll have a look at your video 👍
This is really awesome and I love your videos. As a 30 year veteran repair mechanic turned aerospace inspector, I am grateful for your quality of work. The reason I'm commenting today is for two things. 1. I'm soooo glad you're using the factory hose clamps for the cooling syatem. My advise is, anytime you put them back on like on the radiator, always put the clamp back on in the same position as it came off. A LOT of coolant leaks I've seen were from people not following this advise. Soon as I put the clamps back on in the original position, following the impression the clamp made, 99% of the time it stopped leaking. I've seen so many leaks caused by those stupid screw clamps that I stopped using them where possible. 2. I believe the reason your t-stat housing is leaking is the t-stat itself is coming dislodged while you're installing the housing. Two simple solutions that may help you in the future: 1) use high-tac. You can get it at almost any parts store and it's used to hold gaskets in place. I highly advise you to stop using RTV on gaskets unless it's The Right Stuff brand or Yamabond. The cheaper stuff deteriorates quickly under heat expansion and when the material is gone, you now have a gap, thereby causing a leak. 2) use a small, and I mean small bead of RTV around the perimeter of the t-stat to hold it in place long enough to get the housing on straight. I can't stress enough how much I love your channel and the general quality of your work, and none of the above advice is meant as criticism. Keep putting out that great content dude! You're killing it!
My supercharged JK is sitting comfortably at 6psi. I know it’s conservative but it’s my DD and I plan on keeping it forever. It puts a smile on my face every time I give it some left foot. This project brought me to your channel and everything else kept me here. Alex you remind me of Jason from Autoedits - same zest for “while you’re in there” and being meticulous.
The waist gate dump is a good way to lite dried grass under your Jeep on fire. As an avid off roader I would suggest staying away from fields when engine is running or any dried up areas in the wild. flames come out of the dump it could be catastrophic wildfire time.
Make sure the thermostat is actually seated in the little groove in the head. A lot of times as you go to button them up with the gasket, it will slip down slightly. Then you have the edge of the thermostat hang up, and not let the housing set flush.
@LegitStreetCars getting the thermostat in place in these engines is extremely hard. Apply a thin coat of rtv to the thermostat to keep it in place and let it cure before filling and running the system
Alex, Max and his “Alex-isms” definitions is always funny. I know he’s a bit camera shy but we need to see him every once in a while man. Fun and cheap turbo kit project on the perfect vehicle for it. OJ is such a stud man.

I've owned a bunch of jeeps, and they have really weird aerodynamics. A scoop there wouldn't get any airflow. Above like 20mph, the airflow would go over the scoop. Like seriously, you can drive a jeep with leaves sitting there lol. But being a Subaru guy too, put the scoop there anyway lol.

RTV the thermostat to the motor then place the housing over it. The problem is two things the thermostat slips off motor when you place the housing on it. The second issue, the housing aluminum is super soft. When you go to tighten up the bolt the thermostat creates an impression in the housing which creates a gap and leads to the leak. Make sure to use only a little bit of RTV, you don’t wanna clog the thermostat.

We put that kit on an 01 and it was pretty funny. We moved the cooler to the bottom of the radiator. We had to make a set of switched fake sensors that only operated at specific voltages in order to keep the ecu from leaning out or advancing. They only worked at a 2.5K rpm. I rigged a Saab electronic bypass control that stayed open at all other rpms. My b/o was DOA so I bought a used Audi 5psi that worked as expected and was cheap. It ran like a Vette for five feet.
