    Okay, so after watching RagnarAlvarrGaming's run on P4G With Mandatory Battles Only, I found out why I got Naoto's Angelic Grace Skill by her fourth bike ride trip. The answer is that it was her fifth bike ride trip because apparently I did her first on October 31st. I confirmed this to myself after looking at an old file that contains my footage of the run. This is not common knowledge online apparently because people tend to help Yosuke at Junes on Halloween, but it is optional to not help him. So Naoto actually has 2 bike ride trips before the 7th dungeon. So there's your answer.

    I like the part of the story where the doctors say they did all they could for Nanako despite not having her intubated and not performing CPR when she stops breathing. Nothing like gaslighting a grieving father immediately after letting his daughter die.

    I got spoiled on Adachi in a somewhat amusing way. Years before I played p4 I saw some discussions online about it and the discussion turned to the end of the game. Everyone was talking about the bad ending with Namatame and how they were surprised about Adachi being the culprit. Of course, as someone who had no idea persona 4 was even a murder mystery at the time, it was so out of context that I naturally forgot entirely about it. I remembered that discussion when I downloaded p4 and read its description, but I figured that it would be fine, since I barely remembered any of it, and I had forgotten the culprits name.
    So of course as soon as I see Adachi's name I remembered that he was the true culprit

    When I first heard of Persona 4, I was watching a friend play it. And when I picked the game up, he pretty much immediately told me who the culprit was. It didn't ruin my experience, but it made me reflect on how persona 3 is the only game i managed to play spoiler-free, because I also got huge chunks of p5 royal spoiled to me before i got to play it. It happens I guess.

      When a friend of mine got Persona 4 sometime in the early 2010s, I watched him play halfway through Yukiko's castle before ragequitting. Basically the first time we saw the culprit I suspected him and said so. He didn't touch the game for years, before I convinced him to give it a second shot. The reason for this was that I checked out SuperJeenius' let's play in the meantime. He left the question of the culprit up to the audience with a number of links to small videos, letting the viewer play through the identification of the true culprit and the Namatame stuff for himself. I was really impressed that the game made me stop suspecting the culprit by that point.
      Years later I showed my dad the game. When we got to the true culprit -section, I had him make his case for who he thought was suspicious and only argued against it based on what the game had told us. We barely got to the culprit in the end, but we got there. I'd say this showcases how well the game does it. If you think carefully, it can only be [NPC you haven't been introduced to] or... Yeah.

      In my original P4 classic run, I got the true ending as well just because I asked what felt like a rather obvious question. WTF was up with the midnight channel? It wasn't ever explained properly, and in a game that was literally about being detectives in order to solve a mystery, it was too blatant that such a massive question must have some kind of answer. Plus while nowadays I'm so used to JRPG cliches of "here, have this mysterious power because you're the protag, enjoy", when I first played P4, I was still new to the genre, so "Why did I of all people get persona powers out of nowhere, while everyone else had to fight Shadows first?" was bouncing around my head.
      I really don't think the true ending is "bad design" in the slightest. It's quite excellent design, being a secret bonus that wraps up all loose ends, and relies on you actually being invested enough in the game to notice the loose ends still being left unaddressed. Exactly like figuring out the true killer requires you to realize on your own who it is, and select from an absolutely massive list of options without any real in-the-moment hints as to who to pick, the true ending requires you to keep track of things yourself, and realize something's left unanswered.

    I kinda want to defend the true ending to this game. Persona 4’s good ending was meant to be the ending that everyone got on their first or second time, and it’s designed to be satisfying as well, so even if you don’t get the true ending, you won’t actually care until you realize you didn’t get it.
    And I just want to say, as someone who didn’t get the true ending their first time and didn’t know about the true ending until a year later, I was overjoyed that there was more content in the game I hadn’t experienced. It was very surreal, actually.

    The themes of P4: There's truth within the fog of lies. It's no one's fault but your own if you can't see or refuse to see it, and instead choose to cling to the falsehoods to protect your own ego. Naoto's arc isn't transphobic, and Kanji's arc isn't homophobic. Them supposedly being trans and gay is how they and other people misconstrue their real issues (people being disrespected for their harmless interests, namely ones that go against gender norms, and females being disrespected in male-dominated workplaces) and choose to view themselves rather than facing the truth of things. If you're choosing to view these character arcs and bigoted, ignoring the very real and wide-spread problems that plague everyone, and choosing to make them about a select minority of people (which you may not even be a part), YOU are the problem.

      It would be more productive to talk less about the story itself, and more about the fact that the writers of the english translation went out of the way to turn two different queer stories into "I thought I was queer, but then I got better".
      Yeah, their stories make sense, and they're great stories. P4 is still one of my favorite games. But those stories didn't spring fully-formed from the void. They were developed by people, and fans are understandably curious why these weirdly conspicuous decisions keep being made with the series.
      I don't assume there's any outright bigotry and homophobia. But Atlus seems to be laboring under this awkward assumption that their target audience is all oversensitive weeaboos.

    The thing about the true ending is that it capitalizes on the emotional bond the player is SUPPOSED to make with the cast and with Inaba as a whole. You aren't SUPPOSED to want to leave. You have a large group of friends, a loving family, and many wonderful memories of this single town now. As the player, as YU, clicking "no" there IS the obvious choice if you internalized the emotional aspect of the game as intended. The way to access the true ending actually is pretty obvious... As long as you are thinking about the game from an emotional rather than a logical standpoint.
    Personally I think this is also in line with how a number of other important story decisions (and also assumptions you make about the characters) punish the player for making hasty ones without thinking, like with Namatame, how many social links are locked behind other, seemingly unrelated tasks, and the special weapons you can only find for your party members if you search around an area where you fought them previously.
    It's not bad game design. Some people just don't get emotionally attached enough to the stories they read or play to notice it's there. It happens!

    There's an easier strat for the 4th Floor Mini Boss on Marie's dungeon. Use the elemental break items to cancel his elemental nulls then wipe him out with your strongest attack. The damage is MASSIVE that way.

    I had very little exposure to the persona series before I started playing. All my friends were careful not to spoil the ending. I had one friend who was on call my whole first play through of P4G to answer questions for me. When I first saw the culprit I had instantly suspected him as his behavior at the time seemed the most suspicious. Granted I was mostly joking at the time, but then I got closer to the end of the game and nothing convinced me to change my mind.

    Watching your cat die is tough. I avoided being there the first two times I had to let a kitty go, but the last time I was holding my cat Mookie (the little one in my pfp) as he went. Still not sure if I made the right call.
    Also, like Dojima, I've discovered a loved one not breathing, though unlike Nanako, my wife never miraculously returned to life. That's why the one character in P4 that I really bonded with (and wish I had the choice to romance) was Hisano Kuroda. At least half the things she says I could have said about myself.

    I got spoiled for Adachi in a very unfortunate way. I had just beaten persona 5 so I was watching a hell of a lot of persona 5 content, purposely dodging anything related to the other games as I wanted to play them. But of course, after watching so much persona5 content, something from one of the other games was bound to appear in my recommended and, unfortunately, a video of confronting Adachi in the hospital came up, and then a video with him looking all evil in the thumbnail followed soon after, so I knew he was evil. I put two and two together once I started playing the game and immediately knew he was the killer, though I did get thrown off by namatame, as I never knew he was the killer 100%, just that he was evil, so I thought he might’ve been an antagonist in the golden portion of the game. It is unfortunate though, as I know I would’ve gotten attached to Adachi if I didn’t know which would’ve made the reveal hit even harder.

    Anyways big GGs, a friend of mine was streaming P4G like 2 years ago and I redeemed a "win condition" twitch perk telling them to beat the game no hit, but I can't believe this was actually possible (ofc aside from that one fight).

    50:15 - I disagree that it's a poor design decision by the developer. The game is designed to be a murder mystery so I like how it has a True Ending that can be missed because the player overlooked a piece of the mystery.

    • @espurrseyes42
      @espurrseyes42 Год назад +9

      Fitting with the themes of your game doesn't make a game design decision good. See NMH2's trash final boss that ruins the experience of the ending of the game just to drive home the game's theme.

  • @phantomviper211
    @phantomviper211 Год назад +3

    I'm gonna have to disagree with you on the true ending. I think that the fact that it is hidden away and only accessible by you realizing that there are still loose ends is vary on point for P4's theme of searching for the truth. Honestly I really like it when games aren't afraid to put in content that people will miss, but hey I'm also the guy who will defend to the death not controlling your party members in P3 so maybe that's just me.

    I thought the reaper dropped an item which nullifies all elemental damage.... or was that changed for golden? Cause I know the reaper gave all the ultimate weapons and that equipment to basically take no damage in the original. Using that equipment just makes Margaret nuke you to death.
    EDIT
    I looked it up, but apparently it can drop the omnipotent orb which nulls everything but almighty. Would make the last area easier at least.

    • @artofthepossible7329
      @artofthepossible7329 Год назад +2

      The Reaper drops the Omnipotent Orb once every party member on the field has their ultimate weapon (which cannot be obtained ahead of them joining the team), and armour equipped.
      As far as I'm aware, the Omnipotent Orb only drops once (based on my attempt of getting every party member an OO), so for this kind of run, you might as well also do an Yu only run.

    I got th game "spoiled" technically, because I saw a clip of Persona 4 Arena Ultimax where the culprit was not only a playable character, but also had a rather sinister looking face. Luckily, I thought very little of it until the final brainstorming session where you have to pick who could've done it out of every character.

Persona5 was my favorite out of all three just due to the graphics and the quality of life improvements and i really loved the story.
