REALLY APPRECIATE your honesty 💯 I think we are all waiting for this NEVE silk box only, including that magical midrange saturation knob and tape saturation 😁
Next time I see Neve reps I'm going to discuss this. They'd be silly not to make this.
Hi. Just to let you know. If you would like great saturation, but in the box you should check the Spectre plugin. It is easy to get the saturation on the frequencies that you want. The operation is like Pro-Q3. Realy easy and sounds great.
What is your personal opinion about Mathew Lane Spacecraft?
I've only ever used one once so don't have too much experience with it. I'm going to try and get hold of one. It could replace my SPL Gemini.
Here's my 2 cents as an owner...I bought one of these and really I'm not sure it's worth $500 let alone the 4K I paid for mine. One lesson is, like he says, the "color compressor" is basically useless... using it WILL ruin your mix and never improve it... you can kiss your dynamics goodbye if you don't turn it off. Any kind of cutting with the EQs will almost always ruins your mix, they are shelf EQs and they are dramatic, not subtle. The "super silk" that everyone raves about... idk... does it do something? It does something you can hear if you flip it on and off... is it 4K worth of better... I'm not even sure I'd call it better. Here's my experience with this thing since I've had it... I tried it on a mix I have that has problems and couldn't sound good in the box no matter what I did... the MBT got me something pretty nice and weighty and glued sounding for a change. Then I tired it on a mix that I thought couldn't be improved but wanted to see what the MBT could do to improve it... and guess what. It couldn't, nothing I could do could really improve the mix that was already optimal, I just kind of pushed the super silk, the width, and highs... the resulting mix is a little brighter... but not necessarily better; which then causes me to think... how will you know when this MBT is just giving you a false sense it's improving your mix at all. I had to export my tracks and compare them to the original mix outside of the daw to see visually how the color compressor was just destroying the kick... a person using it at the mixing stage might not realize the damage being done.
Agree they should have released a super silk box and called it a day and charged 999.00 for it, they would have sold a shit ton of them. Instead you have most folks deciding between the MBT and MBP. I don't consider either box a requirement.
I feel like the MBT would be a purchase people would regret buying later down the track. Similar to when I bought my expensive Shadow Hills Equinox summing box many years ago. I don’t have a use for it anymore as it complicates my workflow with a summing box (as the cons outweigh the benefits). So now it’s an expensive faceplate.

I bought one and only this week realized it's no magic wand... It's a struggle to actually get your mix sounding better and not just different/ the same/ or worse... making it better is no guarantee at all.
It’s a shame though that this is all it is! For someone who has the 542s and the MBP this just becomes useless honestly, but for someone who’s just getting into this, yes certainly!
Yeah I just wish there was a newer 19 inch version of the 542s. 542s with super silk would be perfect. I'd swap the MBT for that in a heartbeat.

Paul, I like how you introduced green silk. :). You mentioned a better widener. What do you suggest? What is your opinion using mic/line pre-amps such as Capi Heider FD312 H2. It is their version of a API on your mix bus for mixing? I am not sure if I asked you this question before about the mic/line pre-amps.
Silk green or maybe it would be purple which is a mix of red and blue. I use a combination of mid side processing and the widener on the LAAL. I'd love for a seriously high end mastering widener to release. I'm not a fan of pre amps over the mix bus. But that's not to say you couldn't use one. I prefer a really nice converter like Burl converters on the mix bus.
Using the MBT in my mix chain (api 2500 - fusion / manley MP - Neve MBT - IGS Tubecore / i am an artist, not engineer) for any kind of purpose. The compressor is really not more than a colouring tool, but I actually really like how you can enhance the mid range of a bus. Sure that you pay for the name, but i just love the colour and width it adds. Regarding the budget I had, i am still very happy with the choíce. Whatever I put through it, hot or more subtle, i can achieve something that sounds „better“ to me afterwards
The MBT will always add something extra to any source.
The Zener on the SS is pretty sweet also. The eq can add some nice warmth but a little goes a long way. I also was hoping they would have put the 542 module in there as well or make the 542 in MBT color format with the Super Silk. Maybe breaking up the MBT into 500 modules would be super cool with some updated Super Silk 542’s with the Zener option.
I use it for tracking and it is fantastic for that.
Definitely. I'd use this for tracking if I had a recording studio.

I wish they would make a digitally recallable unit. They did it years ago with their preamps.
I agree with everything you've said after messing around with the MBT for a few weeks. What other pieces of gear do you like to use for width?
I wish they would just make a super silk 500 unit.
I do like these all in one boxes, but, sections become useless as soon as you have dedicated units for each section... the one section you can't replace is the silk.
I'm with you with the 542 idea.
What I would like to see as a new piece of gear for them to offer a 1U stereo 542 with super silk and maybe upgrade the tape emulation some how or give maybe more controls.
The silk GREEN mention at the end, that would be divine.... what a great idea... . I do wonder if you know something we do not giving it the title "green" but probably reading into that way to much lol.
It'll be then low, mid and high tweaks and they could create quite a unique control section with that.
The width I would not complain at all but I personally would find better elsewhere in the Mathew Lane unit, but that's a whole unit.
I think if they focused on at least putting everything you can not get elsewhere in one unit it'll become something very popular indeed.
I personally right now can think of spending the money for the MBT just for two of it's features... it seems too much like wasted money on useless extras.
They would get used for other things, but again, not enough to warrant the buy.
I do find when companies listen they never bring out exactly what we crave, so we will see what is next or in the future from them.
I think the reason we haven't seen a silk unit us because they know it'll affect sales of other gear. For me, I'd happily swap the MBT for a silk only unit and I think in general they'd lose sales of MBT because that's what most people just want. But on the same hand imagine a £1600 super silk box. How many sales would they make. Be as popular as the SSL fusion. Be brilliant to add mid side to it too.

The width is good on the MBT. It's great the adding the filter to it. It has its purpose in mastering and I'll often use it. I'll use the width on the Hum Audio LAAL more as it's a really good widener for mastering at the final stage of the chain at the limiter. I tend to use a combination of the MBT width, LAAL width and mid side EQ to achieve the desired width in mastering.
Would you put the 542s before or after the MBT
Given the choice, I would probably use the 542 before the MBT 90% of the time.
The price hard to justify as a hoby audio enthusiast.
100% agree. Especially when you consider what you could buy with £4k

I prefer the Hum Audio LAAL width. Then using a combination of different mid side EQs.

Among other things on my tubas i use two portico 542.. i wouldn’t change them with the mbt
But I bet you'd like the option to use both silk red and silk blue at the same time. If only the 542s were 19inch rack and not 500 series. I'd happily have 2 19inch 542s. One for silk red and one for silk blue. Neve just need to make an updated 542 with all the features we need. Then it's a case of swap the MBT for 542s.
@@AudioAnimalsStudio yes, having the option of using silk red and blue would be great. Personally i and up using the silk red more often. But to be honest i love the tape saturation on the 542. It adds a weight to the low in a really pleasant way to me.
@marianolarocca-ionique5027 totally agree. When I had 542s, I'd use them in exactly the same way.
All I use in nfuse is the silk
I made the same accessment in my review of it. The silk section on the nfuse is very good. As is very much like the hardware in most cases. Which is good as that is the best thing about the MBT.
I’m new to the analog world and I actually want to buy the Mbt transformer for mixing vocals or is it more for mastering?
To be honest it's more suited for mixing vocals through. For mastering as I explained, it gets little use apart from the super silk which is brilliant in mastering. Compressor is much more suited for vocal compression over mastering compression.

@alphasupreme7167 very clean which is what I like about it. Sometimes I need some clean saturation. Perfect for that.
Is it stereo width different from portico 2 ? Or is the same?
No, it's different from the portico 2.

@sviatoslavvorslov928 before getting the MBT I had the MBP. I swapped the MBP for the MBT. For me and what I use it for which is mainly focused around the sill textures. The MBT was the clear winner. It really depends what you want from it. If you want a compressor more then go for the MBP. If you want better silk textures go for the MBT.
