In this video we take a closer look at the BYD (Build Your Dreams), NIO and X-Peng cars and their interiors, play around with some of the features and overall be overly harsh when criticizing and making fun of these obscure cars.

In the US Tesla literally sells its cars in malls. My local Mazda dealership also has a cafe in its service waiting room, but is otherwise a totally standard dealership. It's like all the manufacturers know buying a car is more unpleasant than it ought to be, but they haven't found the solution yet.
Car dealers having an outpost showroom in a mall has been a thing for a long time; "The new Oldsmobiles are in early this year." was a line delivered during the mall chase in The Blues Brothers, after all, and that movie is 43 years old.
My local Mazda dealership also has a cafe, but it used to be a Lincoln dealer so I think it's from that

There is one, abolish all the damn dealerships and let people buy directly from the manufacturer and before you say "but how will warranty and servicing be handled?" Let the service centers exist, just not the dealerships that are attached to them
They (the big 3) know the solution but it’s up to the dealers to cough up money and make changes as the companies don’t really want to spend their own money.
Mail order cars. That's the solution. . . which happens to be illegal.

Fun little factoid: the name "BYD" was supposed to simply be Yadi (Battery Corp.), but they added a "bi" (which reads as Biyadi) so their name appears higher when sorted by alphabetical order

the literal tablets EVERYWHERE down to the "slide to unlock" in the back is something that absolutely drives me nuts about these BYDs... also "3.9s" is its 0-60 time... imprinted on the back... yeah, those cars are really just so lost its unreal. literally just a random assortment of ideas, some sort of android skin and apparently that's a car to these companies
Seriously, most if not all of these Chinese car manufacturers are more like random startup tech companies than actual car manufacturers, that's why their cars are so full nonsense.
I would never buy any of these, not just because of questionable Chinese quality but the "technology". This is more or less why I hate new cars and won't have one. When I'm driving a car, I want my focus on the road, not on some touchscreen while trying to navigate a menu system just to turn the heat up or down a notch!

Renault used to sell cars in the U.S. that had a big sticker across the rear window with their slogan, "the one to watch." I thought that was very tacky.

BYD was a made-up word when Wang registered his company, which was initially a battery workshop. He tried several names but all have already been taken by others, so in the end he called "f*ck it" and made up a word for the name of his factory.
As a battery factory, name is the least thing to worry in the business, but it turns into a challenge as BYD steps into car manufacturing.
Because BYD is suspiciously similar to "F*ck It" or "Son Of B*itch" in Chinese, which sometimes can be a problem in marketing the cars. So BYD recently came up with that slogen "Build Your Dream" as sort of compensation.
So every time you show the BYD logo to drivers near you, you are in fact pull a large middle finger at them.

Honestly, BYD's full name reminds me of LG, the electronics maker. You know what LG originally stood for? Lucky Goldstar. Like "Build Your Dreams", that name may have sounded good in the home country, but not here in the West.
the whole build your dream thing is a last-minute tack-on explain, in the past the back of BYD cars just have a sort of knockoff BMW logo.

@@wonseok_song Might be a retcon reverse acronym, but I think BYD should embrace it. Wang Chuanfu was a poor farmer turned engineer who started a small company to sell aftermarket batteries for laptops and phones and such, and less than 30 years later BYD is the 2nd largest battery maker on the planet, maker of the innovative LFP Blade Battery. Then a few years later, he decided to buy probably the worst car company in China to try his hand at making cars, and now 20 years later, BYD is about to surpass Tesla as the number 1 selling EV maker in the world. The man really did build his dreams.
Before Lucky Gold Star name, it was just "Gold Star", with GS logo instead
it's funny cuz BYD was initially just named "YD" as in "Ya Di", the place it was founded, but later when attending an exhibition or something they added a letter B before YD so that their name could show up higher in an alphabetically ordered list

They look fine on my phone's screen. The styling is all over the place though, you could shuffle them and I couldn't pick the ABC brand from the XYZ brand. However the biggest issue is reliability. I cringe thinking about all those gimmicks after five years of use. And obviously service by the dealers. The Japanese had started at the low end of the market and .worked their way up by making them first and foremost cheap(er) but reliable. The Chinese are starting upmarket with a giant question mark on reliability.

@@odysliu9235 Perhaps I should have been more specific. The Japanese started *exporting* at the cheaper side of the market before going upscale. I have no doubt that at the Chinese market - which I am absolutely unaware - the cheapest and most basic cars are domestic.

Elon Musk said back when the Model S was new, a comment stating big car companies that have new innovations were really just out of innovative ideas so they would make a stripe on the hood or something essentially pretty sad and embarrassing in terms of THE NEW MUSTANG!!! I love the little travel buddy. Maybe it's a speech controlled little helper that winks and says beep boop when you ask them to change the radio station or set up a GPS. As long as it's not a speaking autonomic assistant Bonzi Buddy annoyance that never shuts up.
There is the option to have the physical representation of NOMI removed, which actually costs less.

I really don't want to be prejudice here, I work in the auto industry (as an engineer) and I know darn well there is not a car on the planet that is "country X" exclusively made, and the people of China are no dummies. BUT, I am currently working on a large set of small rinky dink projects where we are moving production from China to our European, and NAFTA (US, Canada, Mexico) plants due to never ending warranty claims after sometimes months of use, nearly triggering a recall. It may be nice ... for a bit but ...
Do you know why things that work fine in China end up having quality issues in the United States, Canada, and Mexico? It's not a problem with the equipment or the materials; it's an issue with education. I'm not saying that the education in North and South American countries is inferior to that in China; I don't know how to put it exactly. In countries influenced by Confucian culture, they seem to be better suited to producing higher-quality products.
Since I moved from China to work in Canada, my stress levels have decreased significantly, and my daily workload is much lighter than in China. However, even so, I am one of the hardest-working people in the company, and I see colleagues all around me chatting over coffee. These colleagues often make mistakes, but the company can't impose individual penalties for their errors, so they don't have an incentive to avoid these problems from happening again. In China, such a situation would result in penalties from the company. Although this also goes against labor laws in China, employees there feel that if they cause losses to the company, they should be penalized. In Canada, no one thinks this way.
North America is more suited for a carefree life, while China is better suited for creating and producing products. However, the world is now moving away from "Made in China," relocating production outside of China. In reality, this approach can cause greater losses to most people because the costs incurred when those careless employees make mistakes eventually trickle down to consumers.

I live on Bonaire and Chinese cars are really common here. Haval, Grand Wall but especially Changan is big here.
And I have to say: I'm impressed with their models. They look great and for the price point (different models, ranging from $20k to $35k) they really offer a lot. Give it a few more years...
I drive a Changan Hunter pickup, bit more basic and rough, but still great. It is also sold as the Peugeot Landtrek :)
Same here, I drive an MG M5 and it's a very nice car for the money. I'm old enough to remember us laughing at the first Japanese cars imported to America.
I'd actually go for the Nio. Only because their cars come with a little robot friend to keep me company on my long lonely drives.

Personally, I think the current high and rising anti-China sentiment will stop Chinese brands from ever selling well in the US, which is a problem that European, Japanese, and South Korean brands never had to truly face.

Watching this I felt like I would break everything in these cars within a week. The one with the spanner door handles looks the sturdiest.
I have the same impression driving a new Mercedes or Audi.
The assembly lines for these cars might as well head straight to the landfill.

this is a disappointing video from an otherwise good channel. the anti-china sentiment felt like they went there decidedly to be unfair. I'll ignore the idiotic, tired old (and wrong) 'china spying' comments (all modern evs have a dozen cameras and sensors). the material quality for the price didn't seem too different from whatever the europeans are doing these days, as are the screen-heavy UI with occasional glitches.
the cheesy 'member of the family', 'mobility apparatus' etc marketing doublespeak was literally invented and perfected by the americans while the showrooms being a place to relax and dine was popularized by lexus and people thought it was a great thing. not sure why the same would be 'funny' when the chinese do it.
The difference is the Japanese gave us quality cars, and actually were pioneers in ergonomic design. These cars are just plagiarizing the worst of trendy design gimmicks whether they are practical or not. Also let's remember there are reasons these cars haven't hit the US yet.
I've been hearing the "roads would be full of Chinese cars" for 20 years now, and I have yet to see that materialize (except for Volvo etc.). They don't really offer anything you can't find elsewhere for a similar price. They have good lease deals for EVs and that's about it.
Given the abject decline in quality of all EU cars, these seem quite decent to be honest.

@@jlinn543 Remember, all smartphones, including iPhones are "made in China", same goes for Tesla cars and all its power train and batteries.
70% of Tesla's superchargers are "made in China"... while about 45% of all EU cars have at Chinese components.
The idea that "made in China" automatically means "cheap and crap" is not always right. After all, there are 99% chances your own PC, smartphone, laptop, tablet or router is made in China, or has Chinese-made components.
And if we look at current WV, Opel or even BMW models, I doubt Chinese "crap" are worse.
@@jlinn543 I fear you're mistaken "Chinese crap" to "made to spec". Just like the Japanese cars in the 70's to the early 90 were ridiculed, it was just a transition fase. The Chinese manufactorers do try to build to the specs of the customer. So you can buy a everything included top end luxury EU limo, with a shitload of components made in China, or go shopping in a dollar store/Action.
@@cristitanase6130 you are horribly wrong, Apple is shifting more and more phone production to India, Samsung phones are made in Vietnam, tesla has plants in Nevada, Texas and now Germany along with the Shanghai plant. Dell is phasing out it's chip manufacturing in China by next year, while most other computer companies are setting up shop in their already established plants across other parts of the world.
Chinese quality has improved yes, but so has the other established marques in the segments they operate in. So while the quality of VW, Opel, BMW and others has gone down, they're still better than the trade dumping half assery China is still producing.
@@maddox0110 I fear your Chinese to Japanese comparison is well completely wrong. The Japanese made inferior cars in the 50's, but by the 70's they surpassed their European and American counterparts in reliability and quality. In the same amount of time, Chinese cars have largely remained stagnated. So yes they have improved in 20 years, but so has the established marques and there's a reason why they still focus on price and why they're still have a bad reputation when it comes to quality.
I think you are actually doing these companies a service by calling out the weaknesses in their products. As long as they smart enough to act on the “advice”

Have you driven a recent Chinese car? I can afford any normal range car and chose a BYD ATTO3 and so satisfied, high quality materials, no rattles or electronic failures in 15 months unlike MB owning neighbors. Confident enough to ordered A BYD Seal performance. Badges are easily removed if you are paranoid about what others think of your choice.

Legacy automakers are developing lots of EVs but with one small problem: they are hyper focused on the luxury and near luxury segments, and completely ignoring the budget segment.

@@blee04524the point is that you hardly ever see an ev thats made to be a low budget economy car, they all have these gaudy luxury features that more or less do nothing but inflate the price of the car even further.
It's because the Chinese can't make high enough quality steel for ICE engines so they have to resort to EVs, there's a reason you couldn't or still can't get Chinese made ball-point pens.
I liked Xpeng, a bit too minimalistic and I just hate the lack of buttons but overall it looks nice. Whether it drives and handles nice... that's a different matter altogether.
So, I'm curious...for those living the Colonies where these aren't available yet (or possibly ever) what kind of price tag do they carry, what kind of warranty do they offer, and most importantly, how is the build quality/crash worthiness?
The only Chinese cars we have here at any volume are Buick Envisions. The ones in this video are unable to be bought. At least the region that I'm from - the "Rust Belt" - we were very industrious and our cities have been hollowed out of jobs, money, & people beginning once Nixon normalized trade relations with CCP China in 71. Therefore, not many people in the Great Lakes Midwest have any admiration at all for Chinese products, especially Chinese cars.
In Australia the BYD Atto 3 starts at around $50K AUD (around €30K) and got five stars in the ANCAP testing. Around $10,000 less than a Tesla Model 3 standard range for comparison's sake. The warranty is kind of weird (some parts have different warranty periods to other parts) but that's more due to the local importer than BYD themselves. They sell well enough, around 1000 a month.
@@Cincy32Things may be hollowed out economically in Cincinnati Ohio but that’s not the case throughout the rust belt. Pittsburgh is on fire. The economy is booming. As for cultural acceptance of Chinese cars you might want to travel outside of your almost Kentucky mindset. If the safety standards can pass our criteria and the price is right people will buy. Period. No wonder people think Ohio is nearly as backwards as Alabama.

I watch a RUclips channel that specializes in Chinese car reviews. All I can say is with a little more refinement and quality, Chinese branded cars could sell really well.

Dude, after years buying Samsung and Motorola smartphones, I swapped to Xiaomi... 2 phones in 7 years, and the first one still works, I only changed to have more storage memory. Believe me... Chinese brands knows how to make good electronic gadgets.
@@BruninMalvadeza bought 4 chinese mobiles in 2 years because of the price. I can tell you that they are some of the cheapest but all of them were Overpriced. Later bought a Samsung. No problem at all.
@@aasamspb967 This is why you buy phones made by big brands like Xiaomi (or Resmi), VIVO, and Huawei only and not some random ones lol. Also never buy the cheapest or entry-level phones if you wanted to get your money's worth, that's the most important key when buying Chinese phones. I've been using Xiaomi phones for 6 years now and never had any issues at all
Got to love the humorous take on China brand cars and crossovers, but they may have the last laugh as they get into new markets. BYD is already selling local transit and specialized busses in the USA, they have an office/showroom in Los Angeles and assemble some busses in that area. If it wasn't for the currently poor trade and political relationship of the USA and China, the joint ventures of GM, Ford, Stellantas and China vehicle companies, they would be selling them here already. I expect the China vehicles to be mostly EV's or 'budget priced' ICE/Hybrids to get into the market like Hyundai/Kia did in the 1980's-1990's.
I doubt it. With all the cars on video spontaneously combusting, and with all the anti Chinese sentiment, I highly doubt they will be much of a threat.

Lmao yeah I'll believe it when I see it. Here in NA you see anything engraved "made in china" You get a sinking feeling in your stomach knowing it's quality will be questionable at best and will have horrible reliability. I highly doubt american car buyers are going to shell out 40 grand for one of these pieces of junk by any reasonable metric. Every single car brand that has been bought out by chinese companies have completely nosedived in terms of long term reliability. Tools, cheap knockoff electronics, gaming consoles, replacement car parts... made in china is synonymous with cheap quality, corners cut, and breaking fast.
I really love the NIO cars. They are yet so simple but have tons of features! The quality is there, the performance, the comfort and the tech. Battery swapping has many pros and I like the idea of the NIO House and the community concept. Never experienced such a positive minded environment regarding a "car maker". It is a brand you have to experience yourself but it is a bit more pricey as it is a "premium brand".
There was a time when made in Japan was considered crap. About two decades later, the US artificially crashed Japan's economy, because they were producing better, high quality products that people wanted.
Using psychic energy? BS. Japan's economy fell out in the late 90's with a high cost of living, aging population. Much like the late 1920's, they thought the good times would never end. The US also invested in the Japanese economy, nobody was a winner there.

Notice why all the detail is spent on the interior? LCD screens cost maybe 20 bucks at the sizes here, strap some low power android unit to them and every zoomer who knows nothing about cars will get captivated but useless trash.
Meanwhile the chassis is poorly made. The EV system is 5 years behind Tesla and the entire thing has massive warranty issues and no aftermarket part support.

Now the US can unilateral impose something like the Plaza Accord on a client state such as Japan. Trying to wage a similar trade war against China, on the other hand, won't be so easy. Same here. I had a suburb legacy 98 wagon. I got it at 213k and drive it about 3 years. Put an alternator and fuel pump in it, otherwise just regular maintenance. It got so rusty fenders were flopping, all the window motors quit. The engine and transmission were still running like new. But so many things needed fixing and had 349k at that point. So junked it. I wish I would've had a garage or somewhere to keep the drivetrain. Best snow car I ever drive. Was just a sweetheart of a car. If I ever buy a new car it's gonna be Subaru 😊

The bearings would last 20 yrs. Problem was, a tank in that war lasted maybe a month. Americans built the Sherman. Not a great tank, but we battled they had 2 tigars and we would have 12 Shermans. If I'm not mistaken, the "3.9s" on the Han, is its 0-60 time. So if you were waiting for the updated model, you'd actually want the lower number, bc it would conceivably the newer model.

I've been watching videos about the Chinese car market. BYD specifically seems to have ALOT of serious quality problems (and battery fires). Relying on touch panels so much with no buttons = big problems if the screens go out (*and they WILL go out).

The BYD feels cheap because it IS cheap. Here in Malaysia, the BYD Atto 3 and the BYD Dolphin are among the cheapest, if not the cheapest, electric cars on the market today. Because of that, they’re going to get such a head start, I doubt European carmakers can catch up.

I work in the automotive industry since 25 years. I've alway driven Mercedes-Benz, yet chose the BYD Han as daily driver earlier this year. Best car I've ever owned.
Out of curiosity, how old are you, and what Mercedes cars you previously owned ?

Actually, the bungee-cord design could work very well for holding drink-bottles. If done right it could fit many different sizes ranging from small to larger insulated designs, while holding them firmly to prevent rattling.
The big drawback I see is that it would be hard to put the container back in without taking your attention away from driving.

On a serious note, I want to point out, though, that the joke's on us with European cars. One example: The Mercedes A Class is a Renault Megane through and through (including the engine). But we have to pay an additional €15,000 because the badge is different. So Chinese cars may have their obvios gimmicks, but I hate being shafted by European manufacturers 😥 That's why I will stick to my beloved, and extremely reliable Mazda!

I like it! I like the BYG cars, I think they are thinking out of the box and making cars interesting again. The guitar was a little cheesy, but I like their willingness to try. American cars are too unremarkable, and they all emulate each other in their looks.

I had to drive a MG HS as a rental for a while. It felt cheap even though not on the first look. Also it made funny noises after a while coming from brakes and chassis. Ofc it was a rental but it only had 15k km on the clock.
The worst thing was the infotainment. My old Samsung S3 was quicker and more responsive. and didn't crash all the time.
Got a RAV4 as a replacement. Lightyears ahead
Edit: I had a PhEV too. I found out it has a 30l tank on a 2to vehicle rather quick as I ran out of fuel in the middle of nowhere and the battery didn't charge either

Yeah, some a bit gimmicky, others sort of unfinished. But as a German I have to say, our EVs really aren't much better either, except for the high-end ones. And the Chinese ones simply look so much better. I guess the price tag will decide for most people.

My cousin Wang Suk Lo used to work at BYD. He was ordered to reduce the quality and mix in insect husks and bat droppings into things like floor mats then claim it was eco friendly. When he spoke out they tried to silence him by sending hired goons (one was named Suk Peen Tang) to assault him. They held him down and launched heavy groin kicks.
Luckily there are many great Dutch brands.

They look really upscale and nice, from my screen at least. However, a friend of mine bought a brand new Chery QQ, an economy car, and there were some worrying stuff about it. The paint flaked right under the gas filling cap, the interior started creaking just after 8000km, the insides of the instrument cluster rattled quite noticeably, the clutch juddered a bit whenever you parted from a standstill and the inner passenger door lever mechanism broke and you had to open from the outside. Now, I get it's an economy car but every other manufacturer back then also had cheapo cars that were overall, better built than this QQ stuff. In the end, it was totaled when parked by a drunk idiot in a pickup truck, so he got the insurance money and bought himself a better cheap car.
"Upscale" is how they trap you, all this interior tech is just window dressing. LCD screens are very cheap now and running Android is free.
What they don't tell you is these things are built like garbage and have no warranty support or parts availability, they are designed to part idiots from their money.
