- This is a basic explanation of how the Plex Media Server works. I actually have a lot of people ask me these questions, so before you think all the information here is common sense, remember that everybody has to start somewhere.

I still don't know what Plex is after this video.
MaxXximilian1 Plex takes your at home digital media library and turns it into a private Netflix for you to enjoy from anywhere.
Same.
Me too and I watched it twice!
MaxXximilian1,
Me too, but then I'm a moron.
😕😔😜
He starts explaing what Plex is by 0:27. How do you still don't understand it??
Finally got my Plex server up and running. I had to bridge my modem and got it going thanks for super educational videos.
Can you please explain a little bit more better for me
As now a long in the tooth ex IT Trainer who no longer needs a great big beastie in the study decided to turn it into a NAS or Media Server. So have been looking at quite a few RUclipss to see what is available and with out doubt this video gave a very good all round explaination. So thank you will certainly look at your others.
Thank you for all your videos concerning this topic of plex, because of your channel I now have my own personal plex sever. Keep doing what you’re doing and thank you once again.
The application was already installed on my notebook, so needed to find out how useful it is.
Very well explanation to the basics of Plex. Now I have a good general understanding of what Plex is. Thank you and keep up the good work!
If you are looking for some more channel check out this link www.vpnranks.com/plex-channels/
Getting rid of cable tv
Why do these videos just assume a massive understanding already. They need to go through it step by step rather than just jumping ahead.
Its the basics
Dude, all of your shelfs are emtpy /s
Greenscreen
Isaac Allen no shit
Like he could afford that place. lol
If I set up plex on a laptop, and connect it and my smart TV to a home wireless network, do I need to be connected to the internet? I have a remote cabin that doesn't have internet (but do have a wireless router) connectivity and would like a way to access my movies. It is now a real pain with having to connect a flash drive or wire my computer to the TV. I'd like to be able to access my content both at the cabin and my main home. I don't mind taking my laptop with me. Thx for your insight.
Nice channel but the intro/outro music is kind of annoying. Thanks for plex info.
Hi, Great Video - 3Qs: 1. What will happen if media names have spaces not dots for movies, music, and pictures? 2. Does Plex offer International Sports, or how can I include it on the server? 3. It looks like I must create a Plex account; how can I be sure Plex is not accessing my server and its contents?
Thank you for this excellent video!!!! I am so subscribed; and looking forward to finding more content on your other videos!
I can even get help why would i buy it. my movies stop randomly. I am unable to post on the support page
why wouldnt I just use a ftp server? or any other open source local streaming/hosting platform without plex in the middle, what do they actually provide?
If you have to log into your plex account to get your home server to stream to your home TV, how do you know they’re not snooping your information? Privacy issues here.
Great summary, thanks. I assume the Plex server is a standard DLNA server, so I can use any DLNA client/renderer/control point, right? Or does it only work with the Plex client?
EDIT: I just saw the exchange below with another user. I see that it can act as a standard DLNA server, but the Plex clientes do not use DLNA but another protocol. Tks
Okay, but how do I share with my friends & family though? Do I have to white list them or something ? Or do I give them my server information to put into their plex account?
Byte My Bits Hello, I have a QNAP with all my files on it and it is directly connected to my TV via HDMI I used to use KODI, but QNAP auto removed that app and I just can't get it back on there to save my life. So I had to switch to Plex. Plex has been working fine for the most part. I turn on my TV and inside of my QNAP (via HDMI to the TV) I just open Chrome and go to plex. Or sometimes via the Roku I just use the plex app. But lately I have been getting a weird message about "Can't establish a secure connection". I get that message via HDMI to the TV, or through Roku, or even on my computer or phone. All the same. It gives me a button to "connect unsecured", but that down't work either. Plex / QNAP had an update recently and now it all working again without me doing anything (minus the update). But then again last night after using it just fine for a week or so, I get the same message. And now Plex is rendered broken and not connecting and not working on any device. Any thoughts? Thanks.
What is with that creepy name, ByteMyBits?
That background looks like a Sims house.
Excellent video. I want to get a Plex.
what's better a nas device that has transcoding or just an additional PC that just acts as a server? thanks for the great videos.
You have to look at the CPUs and figure out which has better processing power.
so what setup would you recommend. I have a lot of DVDs n blu Rays I want to be able to stream to iPhones and android tablets?
At 2:00 you say that the Plex account is free but when I go to the Plex web site, its says: Monthly $4.99, Yearly $39.99, Lifetime $149.99. How does one get the FREE Plex account? Thanks for the video.
+David Weekly The plex account is automatically free. The pay options are just a premium feature set you can get. support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/200288566-What-is-Plex-Pass-
+Byte My Bits Thanks for the quick reply. I was looking at the Plex Pass. I have set up Plex and It works great. Looks very PROFESSIONAL.... I have Roku 3 and they work very well together.
I know plex works well on a Roku 2, but haven't tested the 3
I'm just curious my Samsung tv has the plex app but instead of using plex through a pc with a hard drive could I use the plex interface accessing the content that have via usb on my tv and basically cut out using a pc.
How useful is Plex for somebody who only access their media while in home? I do get how useful it is if you want to have access to your media library from another location, but perphaps it is overkilled if you only watch movies/series at home. I mean, I been using SMB (Windows file sharing) from my main computer to stream video to TVs and tablets using VLC media player and it works really well.
No response to my Question very nice!!
Can you use plex on your hdtv from your computer and how? Thanks
Thanks, exactly what I was looking for!
Hi , thanks for the comprehensive video on plex, I have a question, after installing my own, i linked my laptop and all the movies to the plex app, when i go to work and check it out on my phone it works, the movies all show up but when I wamt to watch a movie it ask me to pay to add the device, playback future... why is it doing this?
Deyshavu! I heard this in another video.. the guy looked just like you LOL
Thanks for your video, it helped me see a little through the cloud but I am still in a fog myself.
I have Plex on my iMac and viewing through my smart tv, but I just cannot seem to be able to connect with my iPad ????, they are both on the same network but are not coupling ???, can you help at all ????, cheers
Is it better to rip the blu ray to the PC I'm ripping on then transfer the file to my Synology NAS running my PLEX SERVER or is it better to rip the blu ray from the PC over the network to my NAS on the fly ?
is there a way to put 2 seconds of silence between each music track in plex player?
Idk if uknow this but my uncle helped make this I’m not lying
I don't really need to watch any of it from other places. Is there a DLNA server that can transcode on the fly just the same? I don't care if I have to be at home to connect to it. My Sony Xperia actually has DLNA which can be turned on any time and even shows up on my smart TV without having to jump through hoops. It is the ease of use which makes DLNA so attractive. Many devices might already be DLNA compliant too. If you find it really difficult to set it up from a certain device it is probably not DLNA certified
great video man thank you this is exactly how basic i needed it :D
How much can I add to my plex library? Is there a limit?
What's the point of having your own plex server when you still have to have the source open and running there u have saved all the media, which for example in my case is a laptop with around 5 terabits of series, movies and anime tv shows! its just as good use as just watching them directly from the laptop then instead!💀
How do you record from the original DVD movie to get 1080p resolution? I use HandBrake to copy the DVD I own and I only get 720p file.
dvds are not 1080p, only bluray is 1080p
Buy a nice router with usb. Buy a 3 TB hard drive. Rip and copy all your videos to that hard drive. No PC needed. Just stream to your device direct from your router.
TheMovieEditor currently doing this at home. Not as "nice looking" but it's more straightforward.
True. Unfortunately, I sometimes need transcoding.
Plex worked fine with Windows 7 and Windows 10, but it stopped working, when I installed the latest developer's update. Windows 10 was supposed to be better at backwards compatibility, than older versions of Windows. However, I found Windows 7 was much more compatible.
I got a message in my PLEX Logs that The Butler was unable to optimize my music because The Butler had to much to drink and got drunk but he will be back on the job tomorrow and he's sorry but he got listening to music on his PLEX Server and decided to party.
Plex is awesome! But i have a question. A have a pc with plex media server on 24 hours and use my ipad or appletv as clients to watch the movies on my led tv. My question is if i have no internet one day is it possible to use it as it is in the same network at home? If so how do i do that?
No thanks. I thought I was interested, but I think I’d rather keep my physical copies of movies. VLC on my laptop’ll be my Plex.
If you have your movies added and there torrents do you need a VPN?
Thanks for informative video
My interest is simply to be able to stream .mp4 / .avi / .flv files from my home computer on to my tv. Will FLEX allow me to do this?
get a chromecast, muuuuchh betteerrr
I noticed when I sign out of Plex on my laptop, the server still works. I have a media box in the living room running Kodi and an addon called PlexBMC which connects with the server. Is that normal ?
+Cristi Adam Signing into Plex adds the benefit of Plex clients from outside your networks being able to see your server. But, as long as you are still within the same network, you should be able to see your media whether you are signed in or not.
3:03 whats the point of making an account if you have to portforward anyway ?? cant i just connect to the server with the ip ?
so do my videos get uploaded somewhere first?
I just have a question..I can rip dvds no problem.I name the file content movies and than i have different categories for those movies like for example,horror,drama,action..I can transfer the files over to plex no problem. But if i add more movies to that same category like comedy, and i transfer them over to plex,it transfers everything over even the movies i transfered over previously? And if i set up a whole new file with different categories like drama horror action ect and i transfer them over that way i have 2 catagories with different movies ..Like ill have 2 comedy categories with 2 different batch of movies..No one explains how i can keep transfering movies from the same file like comedy.Like ill transfer 15 movies to my plex like comedy.well when i rip like 10 more comedy movies and add them to the same comedy file and i go to transfer them to my plex plex will ask me to name the movie catagory again so ill have 2 comedy catagories with 2 different batch of movies.
Could you please make a video that shows how to setup a Plex server using Betternet VPN. The Remote Access doesnt work when you enable BetterNet VPN.
This is so convoluted!
Yeah I'll keep my dvds XD I'll just download a sorter app I guess
And how is .MKV, DTS and AC3 playback coming along? Surround sound either DOES NOT WORK well (no speech in center channel) or at all. Until you randomly choose an audio output setting that works only to find its no longer surround and just stereo in a 5.1 system. THis is basic and its BS that the Plex forums are rife with issues exactly like this and ZERO answers to it.
Is not surround sound audio, DTS, DD, AC3 not something important?! It clearly does NOT WORK for a good chunk of users.
fix it.
Complete step backwards from Plex Media Center back in the day.
How does an app LOSE abilities or change them to crap?
Hi from ur nvidia shield how can u move a downloaded movie on to ur plex or music
How can I watch full Harry Potter movies on Plex and how
And where I can purchase DRM free TV shows these days?
YIFY Torrent
There are simpler devices or software that do the same thing. such as Kodi. Plex is too comPlex.
A program like Kodi doesn't do the same thing as Plex.
Plex is primarily a Media Server, with access via separate Client software for each device, or through a client web browser.
Kodi is client software that sits directly on each client device, there is no server.
Great vid. Thanks.
i have instaled plex onto my now tv box but it will not transfer my downlods from my computer to my now tv box
Make a video on Plex app vs plex on kodi which has better features, 4k videos play smoother on and x265 decoding playback
Really hard to follow what you're saying. More on that later. Something in the description about that. Let's say *hypothetical possibility*. Server server server.
Thanks for the info. I appreciate it.
Is there anyway to run Plex with out haveing to keep a computer on
I understsnd all this but these all miss one main thing. The actually movies etc.
Where do you get all media from . The actual movies etc. Do you buy them or download them to your own server.
Otherwise I have an empty server, device /client & plex
I drink a shot each time the word server has been said. And now.. I dont see colors anymore
I have a TiVo and Plex is on it. Could Plex decode an external hard drive?
well done dude.
So basically it's like a google tv or android tv on the go?
Thanks to this video I will be deleting Plex..
Well done. Very well explained.thx
Will this work when going on vacation outside the USA?
Okay but ut didn't explain how to get thing running.
iPad? why do you keep saying that does it not work on any other table?
So I can't just make an account, upload a movie, and sign in somewhere else and watch? I have to make my own server? Why doesn't plex just have a server I can upload to.
another annoying "click here for that video" "click there for that video". whatever happened to "click the links below"
Description is misleading like others I'm still in the dark.
My plex was working fine, then one day I was working on my computer, I did something that will NOT allow plex to see my Nas Drive, I can only see what looks like a default. I did everything I could think of, with no luck. Any thoughts???
I have no use for plex because its a paid subscription if you want it to be useful
What are you even paying for, its using my hardware and my storage and my Internet
I’m a huge lover of Plex and have a huge library, this guy is an expert, but he sucks at explaining what Plex does , he assumes everyone knows terms and jargon, people don’t , they have no understanding that this is even possible
If I wasn't watching this video I wouldn't know about DLNA.
I Guess Plex Is
ComPlex
im using linux mint and i have a plex server and it will not see the external drive it's driving me nuts
sever unavailable all the time smh
You seem like a nice guy. but basically, I have no idea what you just said. It's way too complex. I just want to watch T.V., not know how to build one.
This was awesome
I've done everything every tutorial has shown me, my server does not work i've downloaded the newest server from the plex site about 50 times. I have no idea why it doesn't work can someone help me????
I installed this on tv and says plex media player. How can I solve this?
I'll try Mopidy instead
number 1 all these app should state do you have to pay for anything
You get really really far without paying. Currently testing plex premium and I have barely any benefit so far since free already did so much.
I guess this is great if you have all the content to fund it with. Kinda pointless if you don't.
Please help me set up my downloads I'm having issues I'm so dumb I can't stand these long steps
This is brilliant!
Yep I still don't have a clue
plex being a media server, plex could hack your whole computer, correct?
No joke
My uncle owns plex just ask him uncle trever jackman
go straight to the point,.
All I know is it is the plex tape used by fil
and/or
You might as well had been speaking Spanish. I'm just as lost as before but feel even loster .. and feel stupid now too. Im sure others found it helpful but way too much technical talk for me. Wish you'd just jump on a computer and walk us through everything step by step. But good video and thank you
did he just say your pc needs to be on all the time ??
