When i first saw this series, my butt hurted because i was sitting on the edge of my seat all of the time 😆 Well written and a sure classic (in my opinion) But no, i don't think that Light has any fears at this time. His arrogance compiled with the power of a god makes this teen feel like the world is his for the taking. Because don't forget how invisible we all felt in our teen-years. I would probably felt the same if i had a real Death Note. But the police would quickly have locked me up. I am that! stupid compared to Light 😂 I'll return for every episode you guys react to 💪🏽👍🏽 Big thanks from Denmark here
8:50 "Erased," "Code Geas," & "Stine's Gate" are 3 amazing cat and mouse games with 3 different genres that will be a great series as well guys! Code Geas was Death Notes Anime rival during 2006-2016

I always liked that Light's father was a police officer, as it provides some explanation as to why he would do this. In an immature way, he sees himself following in his father footsteps.
@@fancybusinesspigeon3879 IKR? Light thinks he's the right person to make judgements just because he's got a lot of praises from everybody at home and school...🏆🏅🙄
There's also the fact that Light was born with a perfect life. He's attractive, top of his classes, pretty well off (his father is the police commissioner), etc. He's never been bullied, he's never had to want for anything, and all the girls like him. Of course things like stealing is still bad, but to him, he's someone who wouldn't even be able to comprehend being in the position where he'd even think about doing it. To him, it's as simple as wondering why do bad people do bad things. Not to mention his massive ego already being there to justify everything.
Light can't read minds. he doesn't know Raye is about to write him off as a suspect. to Light, Raye is still an active threat. this whole situation brings attention to the fact that light is both impatient (ironic given some of his long-term goals, hence why he turned down the eye deal) and that he can't tolerate anybody working against him, and so has to act on it as soon as he can.
Light is also a true narcissist that really does believe himself above everyone else. He does not legitimately believe he can be stopped now that he has supernatural power. At the same time, he's an impulsive teenager, easily goaded into rage and retaliation (ie: The Lind L. Taylor situation, which is the first time we see Light use an entire page for just one name.

Monster is the most well written show ive ever seen, the story, the characters, antagonists…. But the pacing can be a bit slow for someone who is just starting to get into anime
30:20 You're overlooking that the criminal Light chose, likely on purpose, was a drug addict who robbed the convenience store for a fix, hallucinating a ghost or spirit in a high-stress environment is not going to draw massive suspicion unless you believe angels and spirits are facts. Even in the manga, as the guy starts screaming and shooting at Ryuk, Ray thinks to himself "The guy is on *drug* and having a mental break" so Ray is not going to think there was anything weird about it.
remember Light had no clue the guy was going to end his investigation at that time, all he knew was he was being watched and could be watched for a long time.
The thing is, Light is overconfident, impulsive, and a little paranoid regarding anyone crossing him (part of being a teenager). Regardless of his intelligence, his emotions are still driving his actions a bit. On top of that, he actually wants to take out the FBI agents because it sends a message to everyone that he is "all-powerful" and to be feared. Light does have fear; this is why he wants to get rid of everyone against him. He wants others to fear and revere him, not be in fear of them coming after him.
3:50 something you should know about light is that he is very prideful. as the serial killer of this game of cat and mouse, he enjoys flexing his capabilities even if that might make him easier to find. if he truly wanted to play it safe, he wouldn't have killed the convicted bait L set up for him.
I love that yall actually take the time to discuss and throw out theories when you watch things, Especially for something as engaging as DeathNote Loving your reactions/theories thus far!!
Pretty sure the walls of L's room are just sound-proofed. No furniture = less opportunity for surveillance bugs, no monetary records of furnishing, no identifying features for location if ever caught on video... Yeah, maybe I watched this show too young!
Just a simple comment, but one of the things that makes Death Note really interesting is that we are following a protagonist that is a vilan and the antogonist (L) the hero. Not your typical perspective for regular shows, specially at the time it was released ... one of the top stories/anime ever made !!!!
Remember, Light's goal isn't to just punish criminals. Its to put the fear of god (the god in this case being him) into people and to become the "God" of this new world he's creating. As such, he needs to kill criminals in a way that makes it obvious that somebody is behind it. The heart attacks aren't just Kira's method of killing, its calling card as well. Killing the people investigating him will also send the message to not stand in his way.
Light really wants to be seen as a god, so he purposefully makes the deaths noticible so that the public can give him the recognition he craves. He's also very prideful and childish, despite being very smart.
another really great cat and mouse type anime you should absolutely check out is Naoki Urasawa's Monster, hugely under appreciated masterpiece with one of the greatest antagonists of all time. One of the best psychological thrillers I have ever seen in my life that delves very deep into the psychology of the villain, and the moral question of is it okay to take one life to spare countless others. I genuinely cannot recommend this one enough, if you love Death Note I absolutely think you will love Monster, very similar in concept with Death Note being a more fantasy take on similar themes while Monster is more grounded in reality

Omg with the whole “being able to see when people die”…. I can’t imagine like, if your actions on a daily basis change someone’s lifespan. Like if ur friend asked for a ride, and you said no, u suddenly see their lifespan go form 60 to 0 years bc they get in the car with someone else who gets in a car crash or something. I’m a heavy overthinker and that power would actually drive me crazy 😭
When you guys were talking about Light seeing his own lifespan, one thing about the shinigami eyes, Ryuk says "If I converted that to human time I could tell you how many years you've got left" meaning if we assume Light could see his own lifespan with the shinigami eyes, it would be displayed in whatever timescale shinigami use, so he would need to know the conversion before being able to know how much time he has left. Now, I'm sure Light is smart enough to be able to figure out the conversion by comparing the lifespan of someone over, say a few weeks or whatever the minimum time is to have the number change, but I think we all can agree he has more pressing concerns.
That was fascinating finding out what the Shingami's do & with the power trip Light is on with his killing spreee in episode 3 I was surprised as i really thought he would accept Ryuk's deal there & that whole scene of his plan on the bus was mind blowing! 😲
16:28 yeah it's an unspoken kinda culture in some Asian homes. I'd say it's considered more of a thoughtful gesture to acknowledge yr partner's return in Asian culture
This is honestly the best reaction series I'm watching at the moment. I forget a lot about this show and it's awesome having you guys experience it for the first time. This anime really does hold up with it's interesting story progression.
It's moreso a thriller and psychological horror than a cat and mouse but Steins;Gate has a story on par in my opinion, and the characters are immensely likable. It also has big questions and a surprising smount of satisfying question-answering when watched all the way through. Highly recommend it. Durarara also has some cat snd mouse elements, but they're interwoven into like three to five ongoing narratives at a time that all interweave into a great overarching story, also very highly recommend.
im sorry, as much as i love steins gate the first half of the series was such a slow-burn with little engagement. It doesn't suit for people's attention span nowadays.
If you guys want to watch another cat and mouse show, i think one of the best show/anime, has to be Code Geass.. another anime, with a smiliar vigilante plotline but its more fleshed out, and large scale. I think you guys would like it a lot.
Legit question. What would be the line for you? Shop lifting? Littering? Speeding? Dangerous driving? How far down the line would be too far in your eyes?
I think its just aomething you guys arent used to. Because its mostly an anime thing, where characters have inner monologs. Light doesn't know he was about to be let go scott free, his hubris lead him astray and jumped the gun in order to protect his identity.
Death Note is often compared to Breaking Bad so it's interesting you made the comparison. It's the favorite story I've ever had the pleasure of watching. Half the plot of this show happens inside the character's inner thoughts and monologues, it's truly one of a kind. The reason Light feels like he HAS to kill Raye Penbar is because it is an attack against L. There's a game happening between Light and L and Light feels like he needs to "win" this game. Allowing the FBI agents to investigate him freely is unacceptable, as it is an affront to what he stands for. He is trying to send L a message that says "I am untouchable by you. I can kill anyone who is trying to catch me." There's a part of Light that doesn't want to anonymously kill criminals and hide in the shadows forever. He wants to be recognized as the new world order. His ego doesn't allow him to simply allow the FBI to investigate him and slink quietly away from the spotlight. He needs to "beat" L, and the only way to do this is by meeting the challenge head on and killing all who oppose him. Light's ego is a huge driver of the plot of this series.
32:35 but Light chose to kill all the criminals by heart attack so people would realize there was an entity out there punishing criminals. You know, as a deterrent so people would start behaving better, to create a "better" world
It was if he had let him go L wouldn't have thought twice into looking into him. But, since he killed Raye it gave L what he needed to investigate Light along with another person he goes after in the next episode. Light's god complex is what ultimately what get's him caught.
Kind of unrelated, but even though the death note dub is definitely the best dub ever. I love that you guys put it in the title that it's dub because I do kind of hate wanting to watch a reaction of a series like to Jjk or my hero and being so excited to see it just to be disappointed when the reactions end up in dub and I'm like yeah I'm not watching this😂😂😂
@ZeallustImmortal I don't really care about stuff like that I'm specifically influenced by how it sounds. Edit: I lied I do care about the translations that's one of the things that really bothers me with the Jjk dub but all the lines in the Death Note sub that I thought were really impactful weren't made worse or changed so that's why it's up there for me as well.
@pinkiepiereincarnate2291 Yeah Death Note isnt like super plagued by bad translations, its just a few specific things are flat out wrong. Spoilers below . . . . . . . In particular, the scene where in English it is explained that when a Shinigami saves a human the human gets the remaining lifetime of the shinigami, thats just flat out wrong. The shinigami gives up its lifetime to save the person, but it does not give the lifetime to the person. But the English makes it sound that way. Its why we had so many theories about Misa's lifespan back in the day, a whole bunch of theories based off just a mistranslation.
I always wonder if Light would have felt insulted at Ray considering just a typical highschooler with no sus even though that's what he was aiming for. Why he had to pull this stunt, just as much as to try and eliminate the agents following him.
The thing about the heart attacks is that Light wanted to make it consistent so that people would know that something is up. Like he said, he wanted the world to know of his existence. And as for Light killing Raye, he didn't know that Raye had crossed him out. Tho I don't think it would make a difference at all.
It's not exactly a cat and mouse like this, but Code Geass is pretty similar to death note and almost a little like aot too, and has one of if not THE best ending in anime. Highly recommend you guys watch that next.
One of the best examples of a cat & mouse series is when the murderer is amongst the people trying to catch him. That’s why the show “Dexter” immediately comes to mind and is my number one cat & mouse series, definitely worth a watch.
16:00 Hey, so while I agree that death for armed robbery is too much, I did think of the possible argument someone might have. Armed means they had weapons, which means they were at least willing to hurt or even kill someone to get something they wanted. Not for survival, but for desire. Some could argue that willingness to do evil, even if not actually done, is bad enough. Again, I don’t agree, but I can at least see where someone might start to feel like that’s justified.
Still am amazed that you guys are reacting to this masterpiece. Some other animes worth reacting to (that strangely no one reacts to) are soul eater, black lagoon and rainbow: nisha rokubou no shichinin
If you're looking for a good "cat and mouse " anime. Fruits basket is a great show! Its more literal in a sense of cat and mouse, its a fantastic show and is very deep and dark under the surface while still being bright and fun.
what were you talking about trying to make some accidental deaths to no be discovered? Light said in ep 1 he is only killing with heart attacks on purpose so people know it was him
I mean when light hills ray, it's all 12 FBI agents at once. The envelope is the only reason he was singled out. It wouldn't have cast much suspicion if light put the envelope in a suitcase, and then told him to dispose of just the envelope, and carry the suitcase
Another GREAT cat and mouse crime anime but more based in reality is MONSTER.. The moral dilemma and the writing for that show is simply mind blowing.. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for your next anime
For me the greatest credit I can give to the writing in Death Note is that the author can write 2 genius characters, whilst having both of them be fallible or make mistakes that are believable. In the majority of films or shows you watch, writers are at most able to write 1 "smart" character, and they do this by making them omniscient (or a mouthpiece for the writer, and they dumb down the surrounding characters to just be a captive audience of people the smart character can correct or endlessly impress). Harsh as it sounds, how can a writer that is not themselves a genius, write a believable genius of a character? But in Death Note we have multiple highly intelligent, believable characters who are allowed to be wrong or take a hit in the game of cat and mouse. Characters are intensely smart, but have their own blindspots
i think light would target the fbi guy bc L suspects family of the police and would bring more investigators if they didnt get anything suspicious. The best defense is offense ,,haha
If you like these kind of mind game shows Code Geass is awesome and it is one of the few shows where I believe the English dub is better than the subtitled version. If I remember correctly I believe Code Geass was sponsored/funded by pizza hut.
"Death Note" was the first anime that I watched, and it can be said that it opened up the world of anime for me. Later, I watched more significant and masterful series and films - the films of Miyazaki, Shinkai, "Berserk", "Evangelion", "Parasite", "AOT" and many others - but, of course, I still love "Death Note". But since I grew up, a lot has changed in my attitude towards the Death Note. For example, I realized how infantile Light was, and how far his understanding of justice was from adequate. After all, he killed people who were wanted, or those whom the state recognized as dangerous. These people were not always violent criminals, and some of them may have been objectionable to the authorities or even innocent. In addition, the media are not always honest or unbiased and often work in the interests of the state or big business. For me, as a person living in Russia, where civil and anti-war activists, representatives of the opposition, defenders of national minorities and journalists have been regularly declared criminals in recent years, it is incredible to imagine that someone with such power can exist in our reality.
another cat and mouse anime that I adore is Moriarty The Patriot!!!! it’s very similar to death note but also different in the best ways. Both are my favourite animes of all time.
Incredible show. Totally binge worthy. Also Answer, I’ve been living in Japan for basically 10 years now and I have yet to see anyone ring the doorbell to their own house. Or waiting at the door. Maybe it’s old fashioned idk.
I was going to recommend 'Catch Me If You Can' but I found it on your channel. A series I haven't watched but people love/loved is 'You' about a stalker/murderer. Not sure how much cat and mouse action they have going on but I would expect him to be investigated while in plain sight. If you like crime investigations with a splash of humor, the British 'Sherlock' series with Benedict Cumberbath and Martin Freeman is brilliant, and I know 'Dexter' is also fantastic if you haven't watched it yet. Not so much funny as interesting how he gets away with so many murders while being a forensic specialist investigating homicides, or because of it. I mean, how do you catch someone who knows all the evidence that could reveal him? A prequel series was recently created. 'Castle' is definitely recommended. A serial killer commits murders from a crime novel series and the police approach the author for help with the case but he gets "obsessed" with the leading detective and through his connections he becomes her partner as a civilian consultant. He gets on her every nerve on a daily basis but provides a special kind of "if I was the killer, I would..." insight and she becomes the muse of his next hit novel series. It's a comedy crime series I really loved.
I know it is quite likely you have already watched it, but a personal favorite "cat and mouse" movie is The Departed with Nicholson, DiCaprio, Damon, and Wahlberg.
At this point, does Light feel any fear, or does he still believe he’s completely in control?

Now that Light knows he can basically control people before they die he just gained an unlimited amount of pawns or puppets. Scary.

16:28 yeah it's an unspoken kinda culture in some Asian homes. I'd say it's considered more of a thoughtful gesture to acknowledge yr partner's return in Asian culture
I mean WE know that Ray isnt sus of Light anymore, but Light doesnt know that
This is honestly the best reaction series I'm watching at the moment.
LOVE Steins;Gate - they'd love it too
I love steins;gate but I think it is to slow for other people to get hooked
im sorry, as much as i love steins gate the first half of the series was such a slow-burn with little engagement. It doesn't suit for people's attention span nowadays.
Steins gate is good only when you're used to watching anime. Newbies might find its humor and pace a bit odd
WE'RE HERE
If you guys want to watch another cat and mouse show, i think one of the best show/anime, has to be Code Geass.. another anime, with a smiliar vigilante plotline but its more fleshed out, and large scale.
I think you guys would like it a lot.
Legit question. What would be the line for you?
Shop lifting?
Littering?
Speeding?
Dangerous driving?
How far down the line would be too far in your eyes?
Dangerous driving
If you ever want to discuss the show without the reaction video being 2+ hours, livestream talks or even separate videos are an option.
I think its just aomething you guys arent used to. Because its mostly an anime thing, where characters have inner monologs. Light doesn't know he was about to be let go scott free, his hubris lead him astray and jumped the gun in order to protect his identity.
I been waiting for this
2 episodes at a time is simply too short! enjoying it though thanks guys :)
You know, as a deterrent so people would start behaving better, to create a "better" world
Light 'doesn't know' Raye Penber was gonna let him go.
If you hadn't noticed by now Light has a God complex and we all know how people with this complex end up. But, damn the ride is so fun.
I’m clicking so fast on this posts 😂😂❤❤ I feel like this was Lights first real mistake by going after Raye Penbar so quickly
It was if he had let him go L wouldn't have thought twice into looking into him. But, since he killed Raye it gave L what he needed to investigate Light along with another person he goes after in the next episode. Light's god complex is what ultimately what get's him caught.
I'm a simple man.
I see a "Bad medicine" upload.
I click 😁
Though it's a crazy concept, Light really did have good intentions but he also has a huge ego because he is smart. He knows it, everyone knows it.
You guys are in for a good and wild ride. Always Love your reactions 😁👌🏻
Kind of unrelated, but even though the death note dub is definitely the best dub ever. I love that you guys put it in the title that it's dub because I do kind of hate wanting to watch a reaction of a series like to Jjk or my hero and being so excited to see it just to be disappointed when the reactions end up in dub and I'm like yeah I'm not watching this😂😂😂
Jjk's dub is the worst
Definitely not the best dub ever. Its a very good dub, but it suffers from translation errors.
Spoilers below

@@ZeallustImmortal Oh no, yeah, I'd not even caught that while seeing the sub version. Her lifespan is then far lower, and her story far more tragic.
At 20:50, Light saying he would rather have wings references the Author's other manga/anime Platinum End!
Epic Sunday can start now
I always wonder if Light would have felt insulted at Ray considering just a typical highschooler with no sus even though that's what he was aiming for.
My main question is, do L's feet get cold? He's in some big empty room in bare feet, I know it's gotta be cold in there!
Literally 5 step ahead 🤣
If you're looking for a good "cat and mouse " anime. Fruits basket is a great show! Its more literal in a sense of cat and mouse, its a fantastic show and is very deep and dark under the surface while still being bright and fun.
finally was waiting whole evening !
[insert Olivia Wilde nodding gif]
The Departed and No Country for Old Men are classic cat and mouse stories. In The Departed the mouse is also the cat and the cat is also the mouse
what were you talking about trying to make some accidental deaths to no be discovered? Light said in ep 1 he is only killing with heart attacks on purpose so people know it was him
remember light doesn't know he's in the clear
Light going after the guy investigating him is beyond stupid.. i never got why Light would do that. It seems beyond obvious
I mean when light hills ray, it's all 12 FBI agents at once. The envelope is the only reason he was singled out. It wouldn't have cast much suspicion if light put the envelope in a suitcase, and then told him to dispose of just the envelope, and carry the suitcase
I love that you guys are reacting to this!!! This is my favorite anime and I cant wait for certain epsiodes. 🎉
25:52 All according to keikaku (translator's note: keikaku means plan)
I'm so glad you guys are watching this dub. This dub is great and is the only way I'll ever watch death note
A great Cat & Mouse game is The Departed
Btw why isn't Dave watching this with you guys? Sorry if that was mentioned somewhere and I missed it.
A good Cat/Mouse show is season 1 of Homeland as well as season 1 of Luther. The entire season of Ozark, The Americans, and You (especially season 2).
The ost of this series goes so hard
Anime called Psycho Pass is an amazing cat and mouse theme in a futuristic society. I hope y'all check that out, too!
The god complex is still loading !!
I love that you guys are watching Death Note. After that beautiful show, I recommend Penny Dreadful. Eva Green is phenomenal in that.
As other commentators wrote - check anime "Monster"- The characters, story and mystery are on top.
I'm not in a good mood today, I kinda feel overwhelmed with life, and my head hurts. Just needed to let it out somewhere.
i’ve been waiting for this 😩
I know it is quite likely you have already watched it, but a personal favorite "cat and mouse" movie is The Departed with Nicholson, DiCaprio, Damon, and Wahlberg.
How would light know ray's inner monolgue of him unoffically clearing light of suspicion?
The greatest story ever written!!!
Code Geas After this guys?
I was thinking the same thing! Wonderful cat and mouse anime with a killer dub too!
Full metal alchemist brotherhood is what I’m hoping for
Can't wait for the next reaction!!
