OMG, that's exactly the line that gets me, "so you're too old for Santa Claus, he said with a smile, then you're too old for all the things that make a life worth while, for what is happiness but dreams, and do they all come true, look at me, and tell me son, what is real to you?"
I also teared up during 'Blue Christmas', this movie was the very first stop motion picture holiday special I've seen as a child, and even though some parts made me cry, I loved it and I still do!
ron marshall and mickey rooney created a gift of christmas joy for all of us to treasure forever. this is what the holiday season is truly all about. yes, there is a santa claus. just as long as there are dreams and love in the world, santa will still exist. amen!
I think there will always be a part of my heart that hopes in Santa Claus. I'm 18 now and this song never fails to make me emotional ❤ "So you're too old for Santa Claus, he said with a smile, than you're too old for all the things that make a life worthwhile For what is happiness but dreams until they all come true"
He doesn't say "until", he asks, "What is happiness but dreams, and do they all come true?" Santa is saying that what he brings is happiness, like a dream fulfilled. But not every dream you'll have in your life will come true. They won't all be real. But, at the end of the day, if Santa Claus is real, then who are you to say that your own dreams are "kid stuff"? Do what makes you happy. Do what's good for yourself and others. What could possibly be more important?
A truly beautiful song. I listen to this every year. My friends try and convince me that Santa Claus is fake. I just listen to this and this way I know I'll always beleive.
this song brought me tears when I was 10. I'm 18 now and to this day it still gives me those goosebumps and a teary feeling in my heart at the same time my eyes begin to water... Pure old memories are priceless. Merry christmas in 2012
He became a dream to me 'til one Christmas Night... Someone stood beside my bed... with a beard of white.... So your too old for Santa claus.. he said with a smile that your to old for all the things... that make a life worth wild..for what is happiness but dreams until they all come true...look at me and tell me son.. what is real to you...? Ron's voice is so perfect for this song
I watched this movie a bunch as a kid, but it wasn't until I sat down with my wife, at the age of 26, that it truly hit me what this song's all about. This is the emotional and philosophical core of "The Year Without a Santa Claus". Santa, depressed and ill, has come to think that the world no longer believes in him, and, despite all he does, he questions whether he should bother bringing toys to the children of the world if no-one's going to appreciate it. Not because he needs validation, but because he can't bring himself to get out of bed for a world so unkind. But, while chasing down a couple of unprepared and over-eager elves sent into an unfamiliar world by his wife, Santa finds himself sitting at a table with exactly what he was afraid of. A child, let alone adults, who no longer believes. One who thinks he's so grown up and mature that, despite _being_ a child, he calls believing in Santa "kid stuff". And yet, when faced with his concerns manifest, the child asks Santa himself, to his face (unknowingly), "Do you believe in [yourself]?" Now, beautiful-enough is Santa's part of this song. Even terribly sick and miserable with the state of the world, he tells the child, in fewer and less directly-stated words, "Yes, of course I believe in Santa Claus. Because Santa isn't just a person, he's like love. He is goodwill and peace on Earth. He is the spirit of giving that brings joy and gifts, especially to children, out of only the kindness of his heart, because that is a worthwhile cause in and of itself. And, not only does he exist, without a question in my mind, but, in truth, he's lonely. He feels unappreciated and forgotten. He's waiting to be missed; by anyone in this careless world who'd dare to care again. And if he just felt like anyone could dare to care that much, to long for goodwill and love itself, he'd come back. I'd be Santa again." Even more than that, though, is the father's part in this song. He has the good fortune of having _witnessed_ Santa, and knowing that he's physically real in this world. But, even then, having proof of it is used to make a point. Santa makes himself known to the father, as a child. And, knowing all-too-well what the boy was thinking, Santa talks to him. "So, you think you're mature? Smart? Wise, even? And you think that being grown-up means _caring_ is beneath you? My boy, caring is what life is all about. Happiness is about daring to care about what's important to you, and chasing the dreams of what you believe a better world and a better life would be. You have to care to make those things real. Not every dream comes true. Not every dream becomes a reality. But you didn't think I was real, and here I am. Caring about you, and all the other children of the world. Because it's important. Because it's good, and because it's the right thing to do. Look at me and tell me, son: What do you care about?"
Thank you so much for posting this. Ron Marshall was my father, and I am as moved by hearing him sing this song as everyone else. He's been gone over ten years now and I so look forward to seeing this show each season. I own the video but I have taken a vow only to watch it at Christmas time. He is also , by the way, the character voice of the mayor of the town, both speaking and the singing of "Snow in Southtown" Thanks again!
Wow. Your father brought joy to countless people, and made my Christmas year after year with his voice. I’ve searched far and wide to find more information on this recording to transpose it to guitar, but to no avail. I guess nobody could do it better than them :)
I am a college student and I still believe in Santa,, I live by this part of the song ",, For what is happiness but dreams until they all come true.. look at me and tell me Son.. what is real to you?" I know happiness is dreams until they all come true.. but How about you?
For what is happiness but dreams, and do they all come true? Look at me and tell me son, what is real to you? How many children's movies have words that are so simple, yet so profound? So beautiful.
As an adult i think about life. People need something to believe in, religion, political parties. To me believing in santa, believe that a man wants to make every child in the world happy, showing that sometimes the greatest feeling at christmas, is to give a gift that you made. that is the man i want to believe in. I try to follow in kind this type of thinking. I love causing people to smile. Merry Christmas, and happy holidays
I love this song! I was wondering who the singer was of this song and now I know from people on RUclips!! Ron Marshall had a beautiful singing voice....sadly I can't find much info on him through the internet....It is amazing that this one song can bring a tear to my eye EVERYTIME I listen to it! Just a beautiful song...Thank You Mr. Marshall.....
I wish some famous singer would do a cover of this. It'd be great to hear it on the radio at Christmas time ^-^ It's such a sweet, innocent, pretty song. Sometimes I find myself humming it when I want to feel better. It doesn't matter what time of year it is.
I'm 14 years old and I even have a t-shirt with santa on it that says, I Believe. Daddy doesn't approve, and that always makes me wish my mom was still alive, she always encouraged magic, so I WILL ALWAYS BELIEVE!!
I do believe in Santa Claus. Ya'know, when I first heard this song when I was younger, I thought nothing of it. But after listening to it again years later, I began to tear up from listening closely. :'-)
I believe. Last year I heard Santa downstairs putting presents in my stocking downstairs, and Mum and Dad were sleeping upstairs, so Santa's real I believe I like him.
ive watched this special every year since i can remember and im going to watch it for the rest of my life. my kids will watch with me even if i have to duck tape them to a couch :p (crying a little)
I love what Santa does. He gives toys to all the kids in the world. He was never asked or made to do this he just chose to have a giving heart and a caring heart. U know that child might have had a bad year and when Christmas comes and Santa gives him that toy it makes him feel happy and that someone actully cares about him. He is a good picture of somebody else in Christmas that we sometimes forget. And that is Jesus. Nobody asked Jesus to come and to be born and die to save us He chose.
had a kid tell me the other day that santa was not real about broke my heart I am 21 and still believe in the amazing spirt that santa represents as this song conveys if your to old then your to old for all the things that make a life worth while
With a beautiful song like this, it's hard not to believe in Santa Claus. Christmas when you're older just isn't what it was when we were kids. My favorite children's Christmas Movie.
I really don't know how Rudolph and Frosty are more popular than the year without a santa claus. None of them have a song as beautiful as this song. Santa may be a "marketing business" or whatever, but what he does is real. And that's enough to make me believe.
When I was a kid I didn't understand this song I guess I thought it was just you know oh believe in fictional character but now that I'm an older guy I realize that it's saying believe in what the symbol of the character stands for especially in these times
these christmas songs and movies make me soo sad :( i cry in the one I'll Have a Blue Christmas!!! :] these leave you with a very good feeling inside ! after these movies i crawl into bed & i feel so good about life and myself! what ever happened to this kind of music & movies? I love old times like these! I cry of pure happiness! I believe in Santa Claus! Thanks so much for posting this video ! I love Christmas ! 09' baby! :) Just like love i know he's there...
@MrInsanity25 Same here, i believed in Santa til i was 12. Believing in Santa and waiting for him to come leave presents and bringing the family together at the house probably made me happy for the longest time.
^-^ This song just tells people, "Believe in what YOU believe, not what others tell MAKE you believe. ^-^ Tears come to my eyes when I hear "He's not real!" or at school, kids are calling me a little child because I believe in 'somthing my mom and dad are doing' Well, heres what I believe~ Santa can't come to EVERY house in the world, so he must ask the moms and dads of the kids who are bad to give them what they need. Thats, why they think he's not real!
lol, me too, i get to decorate at the end of (or sometimes middle of) October, because i have to get up about 100,000+ Christmas lights i have the biggest display around :) and i m damn proud of it (helps to have a dad that's an electrician, and helps to have electrical skills).if anyone wants recent pictures, send me a message.
anytime time some says something about santa i say then what is real to you ? works everytime i will always believe in santa and i am in college this world is a harsh and cold place we all need a little magic

Wow, I’m not the only one who teared up to this song. It’s just so emotionally beautiful telling you your never too old to believe in things.
I also teared up during 'Blue Christmas', this movie was the very first stop motion picture holiday special I've seen as a child, and even though some parts made me cry, I loved it and I still do!
At 19 years old and still tear up at this and I don’t think I’ll ever stop believing since this was a part of my childhood that I’ve always loved

You’re never too old
I think there will always be a part of my heart that hopes in Santa Claus. I'm 18 now and this song never fails to make me emotional ❤
"So you're too old for Santa Claus, he said with a smile, than you're too old for all the things that make a life worthwhile
For what is happiness but dreams until they all come true"
The end of the song made me cry waterfalls as a kid because it just sounded so powerful yet true, btw, I love your profile pic!

Micky Rooney is the BEST Santa Claus!! His voice is so sweet.
I Hate what Christmas has become. Everytime I hear this. I cry My eyes out. I wish. I could believe.
I understand how you feel movies like this never stopped me from believing
Santa came into my room one night when I was a kid too. Now I believe in Santa Claus. I also cry every Thursday night.
Wow! Really? 😮
That's awesome. I'm always asleep when he comes 😅
A truly beautiful song. I listen to this every year. My friends try and convince me that Santa Claus is fake. I just listen to this and this way I know I'll always beleive.
Favorite song from the toon. Always gets the tears going.
this song brought me tears when I was 10. I'm 18 now and to this day it still gives me those goosebumps and a teary feeling in my heart at the same time my eyes begin to water... Pure old memories are priceless. Merry christmas in 2012
I love these movies and their songs XD SO CUTE they remind me of Christmas when I was little.

My Name is Nicholas and I was born on Christmas eve. When I'm old I'm going to grow a beard and get a job as a mall Santa.
Please tell me you’re working on the beard as we speak
Superlative! I cry every time I hear this song! T_T
