Finally we officially get the Quake we deserved for so many years.. including the music! Loving the dynamic lighting and no-fuss click and play gameplay. As much as I love Quake I never really played the expansion packs before. This is a good opportunity to finally do so.
This is one game where I hope that you only have to go into one menu to select the levels the original quake that I got from GOG has three desktop icons which means I had to make three steam configs basically you make one and then you have to copy and paste it but they don't make the process super seamless. Also you have to download a program that can rip the music from an official CD for some reason.
Personally I do not care about the music. The best thing NIN ever did was write "Hurt" and that is only a good thing because of the Johnny Cash version.
We have been playing Quake thru source ports forbyears now, all made by the community for free and Better than this "remaster", including the music . Only took a few seconds to setup. And best of all no bethestha always online crap
Yeah, the online crap is annoying and unnecessary as always. But believe it or not but there are a *lot* of lazy gamers out there who just want to lean back and play their Quake straight out of the box without any bothersome extra steps or workarounds. For those this is an excellent way to get into it. Besides, this update - including extra maps - is also for free as long as you've got the base game (which you - officially - should buy anyway for the WADs, whether you use source ports or not), no reason not to at least try it out. Of course there is also nothing stopping anyone from keep using the ports, which are also quite excellent in their own way :)
IMPORTANT NOTE: The Nightmare difficulty in this port is Hard, but you're locked at half normal health. This actually makes the game harder as the OG Nightmare difficulty had Ogres, Deathknights and Scrags largely stay immobile and just spam projectiles at you. Made it very easy to pick them off at long ranges. It does make Shamblers and Vores easier, however, since they're slower to attack than OG Nightmare. That said, the game doesn't throw a lot of either at you so it makes the game overall harder since the melee monsters will actually box you in more. Plus 50 HP cap. Also unlike OG Nightmare, monsters can be stunned here.
Just enable god mode. You can also edit the config file to map keys to commands that you would type in the console. So you can turn on god mode by pressing the G key, for example.
@@colbyboucher6391 It makes such a huge difference. Rooms really do end up being kinda distinct combat encounters and you can only make x-amount of mistakes depending on how many med kits are available. Things can 2-3 shot you in Nightmare and it happens quick. I've found the playthrough to actually be really punishing and I'm enjoying it.
It's pretty fun. Occasionally frustrating because some of the fights are definitely NOT intended with 50 HP in mind. The exit area at the end of Ebon Keep is the most recent level to give me a few issues, but I had even less health going into that. First time I quicksaved in my playthrough. I imagine that a future build will include OG nightmare as a menu switch. I doubt they'd edit the start maps to make an actual in-game switch a la Quake 1.5, but then again, Nightdive just might.
5:31 No.. they never added the soundtrack back in the original due to copyright issues. In short, because the soundtrack was made by Nine Inch Nails, they were "owned" by a record company like most musicians. So the record company also owns Quake soundtrack and they made the decision to not allowed them to have the soundtrack in mp3 with the game files, but instead they are recorded tracks on the CD of the game like a regular audio CD. So the only way they work is by having the CD on the driver at all times while playing. With digital copies.. the soundtrack is obviously missing and id doesn't own the rights for it. Because this remaster is actually a new release and being sold on consoles.. they had to license the soundtrack back to have it in the game.
@@punishedfiddle4476 That's obviously not true at all. You know nothing about licensing or rights issues, not the least about RedBook Audio and how it works.
Of course, that had the benefit of letting you play the game music in any CD player. And licensing issues notwithstanding it wouldn’t have inherently prevented later releases from including it, even if you needed to accept the hard drive space hit from the PCM, or patch the game to play compressed versions. So the main roadblock was presumably licensing, or rather lack of desire to go back and re-license, until now. Since evidently getting the music licensed again wasn’t impossible either once the parties came together.
There was no license issue, it was just a lazy technical issue. Original game only had Redbook audio and they never bothered to add an alternative playback method from audio files.
When Q1 was released, mp3 playback was a pretty big deal for a lot of computers. Redbook audio was common not because of some weird licensing or DRM but because it allowed developers to offload music to the CD-ROM - which delivered the raw audio to the sound card via a separate cable. The CPU didn't need to be involved at all. Cheap and simple music playback = more CPU cycles for 3D math and game logic, which was definitely needed in this case since the original Quake release was also before 3D accelerator cards became common…
I can confirm that if you got it like I did on bethesda's launcher back when they gave away the original Quake trilogy, that version ALSO got the remaster upgrade, it's so cool I'm loving the crap out of it! Yes! The sci-fi meets gothic medieval fantasy aesthetic of original Quake was really interesting, fun, and unlike anything else at the time. It’s a shame they abandoned the theme in Quake 2 and after. Quake 2 is basically just more Doom, aesthetically.

I hope they fix the issues they introduced with the new updates soundtrack though, search for the video: "The issue with Nightdives Quake 2021 Soundtrack"
Texture smoothing is actually the good ol’ bilinear filtering (so it will look like Glide used to, back in the day). Without it, it’s similar to software mode. Anyway, I love that they enhanced the monster animations (which were fixed at 15 fps in the original) and they are now completely smooth.
animation interpolation is in quite a few of the source ports too, I think. I like the effect, but there's also a staccato, Harryhausen feel to the non interpolated frames that I kind of appeciate. The option of both is very much appreciated.

Back in the day, my PC couldn't play Quake, so i used to rent the N64 version A LOT Aubrey Hodges' score and the dark fantasy settings conditioned me to play it slowly and methodically, as a survival horror before i even knew what that genre was. It always impresses me when i see Quake players running around everywhere. Imagine my surprise when i got it on Steam two years ago and it felt completely different! I have gotten the Switch version, it's fantastic, gyro controls feel natural for this game and running around with the controller isn't half bad. I still go through certain places slowly and methodically though, i don't think that's going to change anytime soon. Anyways, if you decide to get the port on any other platform aside of PC, my recommendation is one that has gyro support, both PS4/PS5 and Switch do, so... it´s your pick. I feel like i'm going to triple dip soon. It's been so long since Quake had a port on any console that i want to have it EVERYWHERE. Now, here's hoping Quake II follows suit, with a full fledged Quake II 64, wich was a different game altogether.
So I had no idea this was being released today. I logged into Steam with the intention of playing a totally different game, and I saw that this had been released. Didn't even know they were working on it -- that's how surprised I was. Of course, I immediately bought it ($9.99? Duh. No brainer, that.) And I spent about 2 hours playing it. Man, it brought back some memories. I don't think I'd played it since the '90s. Really looking forward to doing some multiplayer when I have the time -- we had a big group of friends back in the day who would have LAN parties and play Quake for HOURS. :-) So cool that this remaster is so much like the original. Edit: I didn't already own Quake on Steam -- bought it for the first time tonight. And it *does* come with the "original" version, so I could choose to play that if I wanted to.
God, the sounds. This brings me back to my senior year of high school, playing way to late into the night, then going to school on a couple hours sleep.
I bought the game years ago in order to move the files into a source port, but I never expected this gift to show up in my Steam library. I had to turn on the View Bob to make the movement feel right, and turn off the Enhanced Models to make the hitboxes feel right, but for the most part it just works perfectly right out of the box.

I still have a heavily modded version of Quake on a USB stick around here somewhere. It looked pretty on par with this and I originally downloaded it years ago. It ran on the Darkplaces engine if I remember correctly. With the best paks and highest settings, even my 1070 struggled to push it at 4k. I never cease to be amazed at what fans can do.
If you own it Steam or on Bethesda's store, you get the update for free. Unfortunately, not if you got it through GOG. And you own all official expansion packs and you get the music from all the expansions. Before, I had to rip the music off the CDs that I owned and placed them in a folder, and had to use a new Quake engine program to get it to work. No more! Love it! Online play was fun, but seemed very laggy for some reason. Still, it's crossplay so I assume it means us PC games can play against console players as well. Love it! Makes the Quake community that much larger and able to interact.
Also means that if there are any cheaters on PC (although I don't think there are that many people that will play Quake online, let alone cheat), it'll ruin the console players' experience as well.

I would note that you can still play split screen and single player without an account. It's just for the online servers. In order to use the Bethesda server infrastructure you need a user account, which seems fairly reasonable - Steam requires the same thing. You just don't notice because you already have to be logged in to play.
So basically it's the good ol' Quake we all know and love - if modern graphics capabilities existed in 1996? What more do we need?! There are honestly a lot of great old games that deserve a wider audience today, but are held back because they don't live up to modern standards. Faithful remasters and ports like this are a great way to give them the audience they deserve, and at a reasonable price too in this case!!

It's really cool that these 90s FPS games are getting so much love from Nightdive, doing their best to deliver only stability and (optional) graphical enhancements. I just discovered something neat in this remaster -- the second episode ends with John Romero's ORIGINAL Dismal Oubliette, with the expanded introduction dungeon! It totally wrecked my playthrough, too (I was hoping to do no deaths on my first run.).
I'm more into the Doom Remaster than Quake (albeit its fastpaced gameplay could just as well be Quake) but seeing you playing Quake makes up a good morning 😀
I never, ever disable subtitles. RUclips simply takes time to generate them and match them in regards to timing, and since this was only posted a few minutes ago it’ll unfortunately be a while. This is not something I can control, it’s simply up to Google’s system to catch up.
It's interesting they did some kind of processing to make the sound effects bit rate higher, but there's a lot more noise as a side effect. Either that, or these are the original sounds, at something like 22khz 8bit and the 8bit compression is causing the noise, and when they were exported to 8/11khz the noise wasn't as audible.
Yeah with 8-bit you get pretty bad quantisation noise if you don’t dither. But dither sounds like tape hiss. So that tracks. 16-bit audio can benefit from dither but the quantisation noise is subtle anyway and therefore the dither required for 16-bit is usually below your equipment’s noise-floor anyway.
New Subscriber here, Thank you for posting this video! It took me right back to the 90's. I had my computer connected to my stereo surround sound and I'd play while the N.i.N. soundtrack or a Grunge or a metal CD like Iron Maiden was blasting. i LOVE this remaster 👌 Did a bunch of fiddling around the with the settings and the cvars as I always do, particularly with quake ports, and ended up coming right back to the default settings as my personal preference. Only changes are (1) vsync off + 500fps engine rate, and (2) weapon bobbing enabled. I also unbound the weapon wheel (required for q->rocket launcher) and mapped my usual quake bindings. I use z for grenade launcher, q for rocket launcher, e for super nailgun, and t for lightning gun.
fyi: if you're playing at a 4:3 resolution and want the status bar to fill the width of the monitor like in 640x480 DOS quake (but without the 320x240 dos quake rendering resolution) increase the scr_screenscale variable. For 1024x768, it's "scr_screenscale 3.2".
There's a forum post about it - they are working with Bethesda to get it out and all current Quake-havers should have new Quake when it's ready for distribution. Rumor has it that it might be after the big sale going on right now.

This is a nice looking update. I really can't stand most of these HD remakes, the artistic direction is simply horrible. Their idea of a hd texture is a texture peppered with noise. They also don't seem to have any understanding on shaders, everything reflects light like wet plastic.
Going to be honest, this is insulting to decades of modders that outdid this remaster. But when corporate reinvents the wheel to find a way to get you to pay, it's cool...? Come on, man.
The out of the box quake experience people have gotten prior to this release is the only insulting part. Most people simply don't want to use third party source ports.
Those dimension mission packs were made by machine games, the developers of the new wolfenstein games (which are excellent) and the latter one is new to this release. It REALLY pushes the quake engine, it's rad, there's stuff like the level falling to pieces and stuff and I wasn't aware the engine could even do that without being heavily modified.
@@bland9876 I showed it briefly in the video, but all episodes and levels are selectable from the menus now :)
Why? I don't consider making vanilla Quake harder as a negative. Quake 1 is on the easier side normally.
Ah, that's what the "copper" mod used to do, so much more enjoyable and challenging.
Nah, they were too lazy to add it to Steam. GOG version has an original soundtrack

Yes! The sci-fi meets gothic medieval fantasy aesthetic of original Quake was really interesting, fun, and unlike anything else at the time. It’s a shame they abandoned the theme in Quake 2 and after. Quake 2 is basically just more Doom, aesthetically.

It certainly needed a model revamp, that's for spit sure.

Back in the day, my PC couldn't play Quake, so i used to rent the N64 version A LOT
Aubrey Hodges' score and the dark fantasy settings conditioned me to play it slowly and methodically, as a survival horror before i even knew what that genre was.
Thanks SO much for this video. I totally wouldn't have noticed Quake was updated otherwise.

There's a forum post about it - they are working with Bethesda to get it out and all current Quake-havers should have new Quake when it's ready for distribution. Rumor has it that it might be after the big sale going on right now.
I will give it a try. My nostalgic nerves are tickled. Played Quake alot back when I was a kid. I was 13 years old when Quake released.
Would’ve been more interesting if they remastered the Saturn version of Quake rather than Quake 64
Saturn Quake only has 4 wholely original levels, AFAIK
Dude I'm so happy. This takes me back to the days of my Pentium that I built as the first system that was truly my own
The fact I can actually see what the hell is going on is somehow more amazing than the fact my laptop can run the remake at over 120fps.
good old days of white pcs... crt monitors... clicking keyboards, so many memories :'-)
When this leaked recently, I was hoping to see an option of moving the weapon to the right, or left for southpaws. All the videos seem to have the weapon centered though. I assume there's no right/left option?
Quake has always had the weapon in the center, just like Doom :)
scr_ofsy in the console and you can push the weapon left or right if you want
@@LGRBlerbs I know that Clint. I got the game in the first week of release. When FPS games started to come out where it was placed to the right/left, I thought it looked much better though.
@@jackoneill45 Thanks. Will take a look.
I recently realized that having CRT was last time I played on 60+Hz on razorsharp screen.
For some reason I could never get into Quake. Probably because I've played FPS's that released a couple years after Quake. And can't appreciate what Quake brought to the table. However I could never get tired of DOOM. I could get physically tired from it though.
Thanks for the video, I checked steam it was just over $2.00 to buy, I had to buy it. I loved this game, it changed the gaming industry forever.
Movement in this just doesn't feel right to me for some reason, it's not smooth. At least compared to some ports like vkQuake.
vkQuake can run at 1000fps (well I limit to 238fps for my 240Hz g-sync monitor) but the movement on this is still great.
I was SO excited when I saw a 1/2 GB update to Quake. I knew it was gonna be good.
This is a nice looking update. I really can't stand most of these HD remakes, the artistic direction is simply horrible. Their idea of a hd texture is a texture peppered with noise. They also don't seem to have any understanding on shaders, everything reflects light like wet plastic.
Finally don’t have to mess around modding with Mark 5 just to hear the music, awesome to see.
Going to be honest, this is insulting to decades of modders that outdid this remaster. But when corporate reinvents the wheel to find a way to get you to pay, it's cool...? Come on, man.
Nothing is stopping people from plugging QuakeSpasm into the files. This remaster is more of a bonus.
I mean, isn't this one free for those who owned the game before? (Unless you're in GOG version, which means it's not even there).
it is ported to consoles, and has plenty of extra content, and it's not expensive. it's not revolutionary or anything but it's not an insult c'mon
The out of the box quake experience people have gotten prior to this release is the only insulting part. Most people simply don't want to use third party source ports.
@@expendableround6186 And a cash grab to prompt new sales.
Really impressive level design and art direction.
Oh, well this is a pleasant surprise! Super stoked to try this out later.
They took it to consoles really well to. Feels so natural to play like that. Not what you'd expect.
that setup is incredible, dude
So glad this has been done. Quake is where it all started for me and PC gaming. Wonder if idthesda would have the appetite to give this a Doom 2016-esque reboot, I would LOVE that!
Quake 64 was a lot of fun. Used to play with my neighbors back in middle school days.
This is pure awesomeness, can't wait to play this on hard mode myself soon!!☺️
Dude. I use to have those speakers. Thx for your video. I brought me back good memories
