  • When we first started sailing we had a REALLY hard time dialing in our sailboat, learning to communicate effectively, and figuring out how to rely on ourselves, and not feel like complete idiots with each new challenge. We wondered when we were going to get to the FUN of it all. We’ve since learned that for us, sailing is a different kind of fun...

He is skipping type C fun, which is the fun of doing nothing, having no objectives or obligations, and relaxing. Cruising is this type of fun. Sail when you want, anchor when you don't. No plan, no time constraints, and no worries.
That is my type of fun. I just want to sit at anchor and do nothing.

Just a hint to clean your chain. Instead of wasting so much water and battery trying to wash the mud out with water, what I do is just pull the chain up until it starts to get muddy, then I just shake the anchor back and forth in the saltwater, using a pool with a hook on one edge. The back and forth movement of the chain in the water removes all the mud with no use of batteries.
Once this section is clean, push the anchor up a little bit more, rinse and repeat. Works like a charm. :)

Nice video! When under sail and engine off we don't worry about lobster pot buoys. Even if you run over they just fall off thanks to skeg rudder. That's why we try to sail in Maine whenever possible.

    Hi Atticus,
First of all, let me say that I'm an 80 year old landlubber who has been on a sailboat once many years ago. I was raised on a farm in Northern Idaho and my career was in mechanics. I love watching Your videos; finding You years ago as You began and finished Your Atticus I adventure, through Your search for Atticus II, to now.
I know You are in the process of making Atticus II cruise worthy, but it really bothers me to see anyone having to duck the mainsail boom from the cockpit. Sooner or later, You won't duck in time. I have the scars to prove it.

Fog is an integral part of cruising the coast of Maine. My most memorable foggy trip involved encountering an aircraft carrier escorted by a cruiser in dense fog. We kept hearing a fog horn to the east of our course, and we knew there was no land, so we kept a close watch. We had no radar or AIS, just our eyeballs. Suddenly out of the fog appeared the carrier. They were moving at about 5 kts about 100 yds from us on a parallel course. Looking up at a carrier from a 27ft boat that close is a sight to remember.

A bit of unsolicited advice - a good idea to teach the doggy to sit when you put him down. That way you will be certain he doesn't wander of to a dangerous situation while you are fx. unloading the boat.

Desiree casually mentioned something that probably few picked up on and that's that "you hardly realize that you could lose your boat out here" in referring to the significant danger of of the plethora of lobster pot floats, especially in low visibility! Getting a float line wrapped around your prop while motoring could wind up the lobster pot so fast it would come up and hit the hull and wind up ripping the prop hardware out of the bottom of the boat leaving a hole that could sink your boat quickly! Of course the best defense is to avoid New England. Easy to do until you have actually tasted the lobstah! The next best is to put some really sharp line cutters on your prop shaft! Other than those, you have to go really slowly through the "mine fields", & avoid moving the boat in the fog or darkness.

Tenants Harbor is a special place for me and my bride. One weekend leaving Mohegan Island with 2 young boys aboard, we stopped at Burnt Island for the night. Next day, z. e. r. o. power. Thick fog (typical I n Maine), yet a good breeze, we headed towards Tenants Harbor only to lose wind just at the island at the entrance. My bride said, "I know who owns the island and summers here to paint. So, after 6 attempts, we were to land our 36 sloop on the small flooring dock.
    .
The owner of the island was none other than Jamie Wyeth who drove down to the dock with my bride and after we ascertained the battery issues m he throws the keys to his speed boat and says do what you need to do. Amazing generosity. ✨ ✌️ ✨ Seems you are having fun in Maine.
