    Where's your guitar's volume control at?
    I find that it also works like a gain control with Vertex pedals.
    I have the first mk1 Clean Drive... it's an always on pedal... I just got the mk 1 Ultre Phonix... figuring that they'll both work well together.
    I play live.

      I ride the volume control a lot to control input gain as you mentioned, vertex drive pedals are very expressive and dynamic with the guitars volume. It was all the way up for most of the video but i did roll it back for clean up

    Colin, correct me if I’m wrong, but the original Vertex gets a very close Larry Carlton sound over the others . Please let me know hour opinion. Thanks

    • @CollinLittlejohn
      @CollinLittlejohn  2 года назад

      I would agree in general that this is true, the mkii has a crisp high end with the clean blend that lends itself more towards that robben Ford thing and the original may sit slightly darker and have more Larry Carlton characteristics. However they both can do both sounds excellently

      MK1 sounds much more better.
      More open, especially in the mids. Dynamic, high end airy sound, pleasant overall voice. MK2 is more compressed, muddy, sounds similar when you present a resistive load to an amp. mk1 vs mk2 sounds like boutique pedal vs boss.
      Was parts changed? Transistors manufacturer change? Is it an influence of additional schematics/pots or any other reasons? Would like to see a shoutout on your channel.
      Confused with that mk2 sound... considering mk1 for now, which sounds very well.

      Ohh, that HRM! Jason, you’ve got to bring that one back! Or imagine a double pedal with the HRM on one side and the MK-2 on the other! Sick!

  • @glennburnett6034
    @glennburnett6034 3 года назад +1

    Please redo HRM Brit sizzle. The output volume pot was off. I think the other knobs were close, though not spot on. It just goes to show, when you can play like you do, tone-questers of the world unite for some solid craftsmanship on your part! Where did you get the settings for the UP-OD-MKII? I can't find it online. Found the original pedal's settings/manual, but not what you're displaying. Oh did I say "redo the HRM Brit Sizzle?" That's also because I think we'd all like to hear some more of that guitar. Sidebar: Are you on neck pickup for all this?

    • @CollinLittlejohn
      @CollinLittlejohn  3 года назад +1

      I can’t redo any of these, but the output volume is tailor to taste, the output master volume higher than it was would color the way it hits the front end of the amp and then create a different drive characteristic from the amps preamp section, in this video I’m just trying to demonstrate the pedals drive, compression, eq, harmonic content, etc.
      I use the bridge and neck pickup throughout, check the toggle switch position to know which pickup I’m using and when.

    I was hoping for a shootout with other overdrives...what's your opinion how it compares with a Tube Screamer? I wmt to gainstack on top of my ehx Soul Food, TS is the obvious choice but some players I like use an Ultraphonix so I thought it I'd give it a look.

    • @CollinLittlejohn
      @CollinLittlejohn  Год назад +1

      its definitely different than a TS in gain clipping, eq, and feel. the TS is THE standard but some don't like the clean blend, mid hump, or compression of the tube screamer. the ultraphonix is definitely more versatile but doesn't do that TS thing. I would try both if you can but if you're primarily going to stack with a Soul Food then I might go TS just because you would have to turn the gain down quite a bit on the ultraphonix. hope this helps and good luck on the tone journey!

    I have the original Ultraphonix which I like but I feel that the suggested settings for Robben Ford and Larry Carlton in particular use too much gain. I also have one of the original Zendrive pedals which I like more. It gets much closer to Robben's sound in my opinion.

    • @CollinLittlejohn
      @CollinLittlejohn  Год назад

      I agree the zen drive is closer to Robben Ford sound, the Ultra-phonix is closer to a Dumble preamp gain, less compressed than the zen drive

      He put the gain at 2:30 instead of 9:30 shown in the Robben diagram.

    can you kill the delay? How can we tell what the effects sound like if you add a bunch of delay?

    • @CollinLittlejohn
      @CollinLittlejohn  2 года назад +4

      Hi Jim, I hear you. My thought is that a completely dry guitar is sometimes hard on the ears to listen to completely sterile. all delay and reverb is added in post-production via Universal Audio to make it easier to hear and should affect the differences between overdrive sounds. however, I will keep this in mind in future videos to keep it more dry while demonstrating different drives side by side. Thanks for your input!

    Collin, would you say HRM sounds better with EL34 than 6l6? Nice video.

    • @CollinLittlejohn
      @CollinLittlejohn  2 года назад

      the HRM definitely has more of a "EL34-like sound" as a more British voiced pedal. however, the power section of an amp has little to do with how a pedal will react with the preamp of an amp, which is where the majority of tone shaping happens and where pedals interface with the amp. I think if you are trying to get more of a British EL34 sound the HRM will be nice pairing with either power amp tube makeup.
      Hope this helps Douglas, what amp are you running?

    • @oldtimer99
      @oldtimer99 2 года назад

      Certainly does. Thanks 👍

      I don't mean to push it but care to comment then on what difference does it make to have a different power section in as far as EL34 vs 6l6 if you can shape it in the preamp section via an amp type of pedal? Just trying to learn... Thanks
