  • Having done the Mille Miglia many times, here's my guide on how to enjoy this crazy event without actually entering a car in the MM itself. Includes the best viewing points, the best driving roads and where to stay.
Many thanks to emrogerstransport.com for taking the cars to Brescia and back home again after the event.

    Such a great humble dude.
Notices oil under his car, and grabs dust and a pan to mop it up without anyone knowing. True gentleman.
Also a heck of a car guy. Hope I get to enjoy life like you are. What a trip.

I concur wholeheartedly. Now you peasants stay on your side of the class divide whilst I dine on horse ass in Lyon with some of that fresh 2019 wine, none of that 1959 crap for me!! And my Dodge Magnum is the best of all worlds. MB E-class front end, S-class rear end, 120” wheelbase, Hemi grunt, and a timeless shape, rivaled only in modern times by the Porsche Panamera Tourismo. Wagons are superior. Hemi engines are top notch a d easy to maintain, Mercedes architecture is the finest, and American affordability made this all available. Plus my lifetime bumper to bumper warranty means this car will be around longer than the dealership. And if they don’t get their shit together, it might be sooner than later.

Sadly sort of ruins the appeal of what seemed like a very elegant event doesn't it? Sadly, even in Italy, I'm pretty sure that a single accident would be enough to have the whole thing written off... Étiquette has its reasons.

I have been fortunate enough to experience these Italian towns. The thing I love most about Europe is the narrow streets that wind through cities and towns. And the piazzas and squares around Christmas are filled with booths and stalls full of food and beverage.

I've done the MM myself 3 times, 99, 2000 and 2001 and I have some wonderful memories, my clients cars were an OSCA MT4 1500cc and a Fiat OttoVu V8 2litre (one of only 12 lightweight cars made). The Italian people make the event in my view, their enthusiasm and support for the historic re-enactment is something to behold, with huge cheering crowds literally everywhere! quite a fantastic experience which I'd recommend to anyone..

Harry - I have been driving back and forth to Rome (from London) for decades. I rarely do France and never go anywhere near Paris. I always get the tunnel and then go through Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany down to Innsbruck and then the Brenner pass. No tolls. Or I get off the peage just after Rheims and do N routes down to Basle. I have dozens of different routes and combinations. It's not cheap it's true. One thing about the roads in France - they are bloody good.

This it quite funny. I live in Brescia and I followed the Mille Miglia six times since 2010 to 2019 this way. Even more fun is that five out of six times I did it in a 4th series Alfa spider and I agree more or less about everything. If you drive a classic you will be part of the feast; if the car is a spider you'll have the bonus of fully enjoying the Italian spring at its peak. For sure I agree too that the highlight of the race is the third day, the Cassia road from Viterbo to Siena and the Futa and Raticosa passes. Having been born in the flatlands of Lombardy I am not that that interested in the first leg; when you leave Lombardy and enter the Emilia region you can cut off most of the route by motorway. Until a few years ago the race lasted three days only and I still come back home after Futa and Raticosa, the last leg being quite boring. But most of all I agree to what Harry says at 56:10 "just enjoy it while we can still do it". Having followed the MM so many times I saw a lot of silly people doing really stupid, dangerous things.

For anyone who hasnt been to Mille Miglia - I had done both the finish at Brescia and also a stage stay over in Bologna: both we amazing. There is a super great atmosphere. Brescia centre where they finish is beautiful so that is a nice place to see it end. Bologna is an amazing city and actually you got closer to the cars - the first finishers stay in Piazza Maggiore in a sectioned area but the overspill drive through the streets and most areas have no barriers so you can literally high 5 the drivers and see the cars up close. If you love old cars then this is the Mecca and to see them being driven and some of them driven hard too is awesome. Loved this episode Harry!

GREAT video, thanks. I've subscribed for just two or three years now and these are always a delight. This, during our New York City stay-at-home/work-from-home endurance race vs an insidious virus, really picked up my spirits. I've been to Italy twice. Both visits included Siena and the Val d'Orcia: Seggiano, Montalcino and, further north up the SR2, Tenuta la Campana, a lovely agriturismo in the Crete Senesi between Monteroni d'Arbia and Asciano. As such, I was able to very quickly - per road signs behind you - Google-map your exact spot on the roadside where the SR2 meets the SP24 to Radicofani. Great stuff. When I was a teen in the 1970s my Dad for a good long time had a Fiat 124 Spider. Great memories.

Can you imagine the outcry there would be if this event was in London? There would be global climate warming change protestors all over the place, all threatening fire and brimstone with pure vial hatred in their voices. How awe-inspiring it is to see an entire country welcome and celebrate these wonderful old cars being driven and enjoyed in the manner in which they were designed to be. Absolutely marvelous. Italy is an example to the rest of the world. This was just heavenly to watch. Thank You Harry.

Great video. My wife and I drove down and spectated on the Mille Miglia on five occasions in our 1938 MG TA. We treated it as our annual holiday for a two week trip. Each time we went completely different ways down but were always within 50 miles of a 2850 mile total. I would say that it can be done much cheaper than Harry suggests if you avoid tolls (except in some parts of Italy) and stay in budget hotels which, other than in Brescia, we booked on the fly. I am afraid that we were also alarmed at the crazy driving that we witnessed mostly in expensive modern cars on factory organised tours. However the fastest guys that we saw on one occasion on the Futa Pass were in a MIni Moke which was being driven absolutely on the limit after the main circus had passed through. I can also recommend that another event which is worth a visit is the Vernasca Silver Flag near Parma. Less hectic but very enjoyable.
