This is what we did. We phrased it like " we've only seen most of you through zoom for 2 years, we would rather see your faces please. We will take pictures after. Honestly we also only had 6 posed family photos ( my immediate family, his, bridesmaids, groomsmen then one each of our wider families.) That was a win, pictures only took 30 mins max meant we had time to speak to people.

I regret picking my bridesmaids too early. I had to fire 2 bridesmaids, ring bearer and a groomsman bc they caused stress, problems and drama after being super crappy to us over a personal situation. I removed their whole families from even the guest list and that while necessary was stressful in itself even though it worked out to my benefit in the end and removed 90% of my stress.

Omg the videographer one is so relatable. It was in-budget, but I initially didn't want 'too many cooks' in the documentation kitchen, as it were. By the time I realized they were pros who could have handled it, my husband just didn't see the point lol. But our amazing, magical photographer actually sneakily took videos throughout the day and made us a video, which was the sweetest surprise.

I got married almost 40 ( yes fourty) years ago. Now planning our anniversary party. Re: photographers: we hited a professional photographer for the ceremony and traditional group pics. We hired a teen from church to snap ( hundreds of) random photos of whomever he didnt recognize so we got pics of relatives, non- church friends, coworkers, etc. he also took pics of every table of guests. Brilliant!! 40 years later, we still treasure having a mux of photos and styles.

Re. Food ahead of the wedding. I was in a wedding and one of the bridesmaids ended up picking up a couple of platters of different sandwiches and pastries that she ordered ahead of time for us to have in our room and also for the groom and his guys in their room the morning of. Life saver! I don't know if it was her idea first or if the bride asked for it ahead of time, but tip for any bride: make a note to maybe ask of of your BMs or one of the GMs to pick up some stuff to eat during the morning.

I got married almost 2 months ago and my biggest regret is not taking the time to really enjoy the day. Every minute was scheduled and we went from one thing to the next to the next. The entire day was a whirlwind. There’s so many moments I don’t remember, so I’m fortunate we had an amazing videographer and photographer to capture those memories. My biggest piece of advice though would just be to breathe, relax, and enjoy the day as much as you can because you can’t get those missed moments back.

One thing i did not expect on my wedding day last year is that that being cautious and staying home/ limiting covid exposure would deplete my immune system so much that i caught a stomach bug at the rehersal dinner and spent my whole reception not eating ANY of the food/deserts (thankfully there were tums in the mens bathroom, which helped a little) and trying not to throwup on my husband, who also caught the bug the next day from me and did infact throw up for about 5 hours. Testing the in sickness and in health vow came on REAL fast.

I regret three things, one was to buy a dress almost a year before, I know you need time to book alterations etc but I knew deep down I wanted to make my dress now I have one to get rid of. I should have waited.
Second I should have booked a nail appointment beforehand with a gel manicure ( I should have booked the appointment for the day before about a month in advance). I did my own with normal polish and I was too stressed to do it well it chipped by dinner and it's a silly small thing but was something I could have avoided.
Third if you have a vendor that messes you around, you are right to be worried that it will go wrong. If they can't get it together beforehand that is a red flag.

    • @allieb549
      @allieb549 2 года назад +1

      My top tips
      1. If you want a planner but can't afford full service some will do a run through with you on zoom a month before 2 hours call we went through everything - she made a couple of points I overlooked felt so much more confident. She said my wedding wasn't big enough for a coordinator
      2. You don't have to go with a standard timeline - we had our main reception straight after in the church fellowship hall drinks and cake finished by 4 pm. At 6.30 we had just our adult close friends and close family at a local restaurant ( which happened to be where we met) meant we got time together, we both changed, family from out of town checked into a hotel during that time local folk met a babysitter etc. It was brilliant.
      3. Make a DIY tracker list. And if you can ask someone like your mother/MIL to keep track of this and the gifts
      4. All the things my mother told me I would regret ( not having fresh flowers, not having a first dance) ... I don't!

  • @carycrosbie7578
    @carycrosbie7578 2 года назад +24

I regretted:- Getting ready in a huge hotel, delayed us so much the hairdresser trekking from room to room, guests exhausted before ceremony started.
    - Not getting a professional coordinator the one the hotel provided was useless!
    - Not giving someone close to me my timeline and telling me periodically what the time was, I kept running out of time to do things I'd planned
    - Not looking in a mirror for the whole day realising my dress had come loose and hair needed restyling!
    - not taking selfies with friends and family.
What I'm glad I did?: - have a later ceremony time
    - not having too big a bridal party
    - paying more for a good photographer
    - having grazing table instead of a cake
    - trusting the hired professionals to help with tasks and not the hotel
    - have a comfy, light, wedding dress!
    - not going overboard with a theme

My sister regretted not having a mirror too. Of course, she was changing into her wedding dress behind a tarp me and her best friend were holding up behind some trees at the top of a ski slope in April. We didn't think of a mirror. Later she saw pic and realized she'd pulled her dress up to high for where is should have been. But, it was still super cool to have my dad ski her down the isle. They'd practiced skiing side by side arm and arm for weeks ahead of time it was very cute. Also, if anyone does this, have a few bridesmaid stop where they can see the group waiting and don't ski too fast. I did, so no pic of me, but at least I got enough people's attention that everyone got to see my sis and dad ski down.

    2 regrets:
    1) Not putting an earlier start time on my invites so people wouldn't be late on a Friday at rush hour. This didn't bother me much because the important people were on time.
    2) In my rush to get out the door for the venue, I forgot the photo frames my mother-in-law nicely prepared of previous family members' wedding photos, living and dead, as a nice homage to our families for our welcome table. That one still bothers me.

I got married in April of this year and it was everything I dreamed and more! I think what made it that way is because I focused on what was most important - like Jamie says in the master plan, what are your priorities - and I told myself I would be ok with the minor mess ups that were bound to happen. The only thing that went wrong was the weather, it ended up being 30-something degrees the day of when they had called for 50 degree weather. However, that made for a wonderful ceremony moment when it snowed! It made everyone stay in the venue of course, which made it difficult but it turned out fine.
My advice for brides who are DIYing any part of your wedding, use Jamie’s master plan! It really helped me throughout the process of planning so I could be sure to get every detail at least thought about. She also helps you time the planning process really well which helped make everything much less stressful.

My biggest wedding regret is having too big of a wedding party. It seemed necessary since my husband wanted all (5) brothers to be groomsmen and still include some of his friends, but it was hard for me since I don't have a "friend group" and only have 1 sister of bridesmaids age (the other was flower girl). I was happy to have so many of my closest people supporting me, but I actually felt like my two closest friends were avoiding me. Maybe they just felt crowded and wanted to give everyone space (9 bridesmaids!) but I wish that I had more time to spend with them since they also didn't make it to my bachelorette party. I think if the wedding party had been smaller I would've gotten to see them more.

I am in the same exact situation with having only one sister and no big friend group. My fiance was adamant that he *HAD* to have his 6 closest childhood friends as groomsmen, and I was like...ehh, I'd be fine with 2 or 3 or 4 bridesmaids. So of course I ended up asking 3 more ladies, and now I'm at 7 🤦🏻‍♀️ I love them all, don't get me wrong, but we also agreed to pay for their dresses and tuxes. The budget was tight as it was lol

It will still be lovely but having a 25 month engagement had a lot change within that time. Absolutely agree with the comment about taking selfies! I put my phone away before the ceremony and my husband also barely touched his phone. We didn't have time to take professional photos of just us with our daughter (13 months at the time) and regret that a lot. Had we decided to take selfies we may have managed a nice one with her at least. Also wish we had asked our photographer to take whole table shots. We didn't think what photos we wanted at the reception and I'd have loved that kind of shot of our guests. Otherwise our wedding was amazing and ran very smoothly. We didn't have a coordinator but not sure our budget would have stretched that far. But the day ended up more amazing than we could have dreamed of anyway ❤️

I was just a bridesmaid in a friends wedding two weeks ago and while she had everything planned out for the most part, it didn't stop us going from running ahead of schedule to running behind schedule. Her MIL kept holding up the makeup artist. My bridesmaids have expressed hiring two makeup artists for my wedding to prevent this. And it was literally the bridesmaid who hardly wears makeup.
Something we really enjoyed doing however was one of the bridesmaids had a Polaroid camera which we used to take pictures of just us before the photographer got there. It definitely took the boredom out of sitting in the bridal suite doing nothing and it was a lot of fun to have during the reception when the bride and groom were off with the photographer

I absolutely back the photographer thing. My friends got married last year and hired a woman they knew to be their photographer. She was AWFUL. Absolutely horrendous. I ended up forgoing my own getting ready (I was with the bridal party because my bf was the best man) in order to photograph the bride and the bridesmaids. I photographed their whole day to make up for how horrible their hired photographer was. It's funny how one hired friend (the "professional" photog) was horrific but the other friend (me, purely hobby photog) pulled it through 😂 I guess a good tip for people who are thinking of hiring their friends: vet them. Make sure they'll be able to do what you want/need them to do. Make sure they'll come through for you like a regular hired vendor would. ❤

Was married back in April here in New Zealand. Day was good overall and had a few hiccups here and there (including arriving at the ceremony 20 minutes early by mistake 🤣) but we went into the day not expecting it to be perfect because we wanted a relaxed atmosphere.
The one major regret was not catching up with the MC the day before regarding 1 or 2 new pieces of info. Again, it wasn't major, but those pieces of info would have prevented a bit of confusion for everyones involved.

My husband (of 18 years) and I met in August and married in December of 2005 (when you know, you know). Anyway, there were many people in his family (that I did not know) offering to help because of the short timeline. I took them all up on it, which was overall wonderful. Our wedding was beautiful, but I have only a handful of photos because the girl who offered to do our photos literally had never taken a photo in her life!! I gave her a list of photos to take, none were taken as she lost the list. I have no photos of the ceremony, no photos of the reception, food, anything. Luckily, a friend who tuned in on the disaster while it was unfolding chose to take some photos with his digital camera. He compiled a photo book for me and when he gave it to me, I was bawling. It meant so much to me that he thought to do that! Needless to say, when we renew our vows in a couple of years, you better believe photography is top of the list.

I wish there could be a hidden go-pro inside of my dress that could capture the entire day. I won't mind 8 hours of video recording of my wedding day, it was the best day of my life that I want to see it all over again!! Specially videos! I choose the music background / songs that played on my wedding day AND I love to see the video and hear the actual background music playing in that moment!!! Is that too weird? 😂😂😂😂

There are videographers that does 30 min feature films like Amari Productions. We hired them for our wedding. I can't wait to see our 5 min video and 30 min film of the wedding day next month. 😍 Also, yes ask your family and friends to take a ton of photos and video at the wedding. I didn't say anything but only asked someone to vlog the behind the scenes on my vlogging camera. That was amazing since I got to relive my wedding day again before getting all the photos and videos from my vendors. And my family and friends also took a lot of photos and videos too and sent them to me and posted on social media so that was nice afterwards as well.

I'm about 7 weeks out from wedding day. My regret is deciding with the fiance to have a fairly traditional wedding (guests, ceremony, reception, music, the standard stuff). I'm a more mature bride (this isn't my first rodeo) who not only hasn't been married in MANY YEARS but I've been to relatively few weddings over the last 20 years, and so I've no real experience or gossip about how weddings 'work' today in 2022. Thanks to youtube, I've been learning a lot, playing catch up. Anyway, I started planning my October '22 wedding in Jan '22 never realizing I was WAY behind the power curve. In the suburban area outside of a large U.S. city in the South where I live, the competition for the 'better' vendors is off the charts. Unfortunately, I had to bail out on my first venue because the 'venue coordinator' was a bully. Many examples, but a straw that broke the camels' back is she was ADAMANT I should NOT hire a wedding coordinator (mo. of) and she just wouldn't stop hounding me about that even though there were numerous things she wouldn't do or be responsible for, and told me I was to find someone to take care of it, and so on. Trust me there were other issues, too, she and the venue were extremely INFLEXIBLE and UNHELPFUL. Also, I had to get a new photographer because the first one was incompetent and used false advertising about their abilities. Because I'm getting married in the most popular month in the South - October - trying to find a new venue was very challenging, but finally I got one. Basically, this new wedding venue was changing ownership and there was an 'opening' in October. Of course, I signed on with the venue (since other vendors were already booked for that Oct. day) but I've decided either I'm very unlucky or else the wedding industry is simply an arrogant "B" word. I did hire a good planner-coordinator, but there's only so much she can do when we are encountering 'issues' and overall neglect and arrogance from the venue (that has mandatory catering, and they're unpleasant to work with, too!), and thank God I have my planner-coordinator email/contact the venue about various things that keep cropping up. I call my Venue's "management staff" THE HOUSE OF NO because that's the word they say over and over when we have a question about something very reasonable, a normal expectation. Anyway, I should have had a 2-3 hour elopement day. I'm either on the verge of going postal on these vendors or else on the verge of tears all the time. My fiance has been super supportive and understanding, but if I'd known how much of a foul mood I would be in over the last 10 mos., I wouldn't have begun this arduous journey. I guess this is my cross to bear, and many/most people have perhaps much lower or realistic expectations than I do. Venting, as per usual ;-)

UPDATE: Wedding was Oct 15th (two weeks ago), it was wonderful, perfect to me/us, and I'm so very happy I decided to do it exactly as we did. Ten tons of work put into this over the last 10 months, but I'm so happy I toughed it out. I'm so glad we didn't do a destination wedding or elopement now. Now that I can reflect back on the past year, I realize it was mainly ME who was stressing over things that I didn't understand, plus, I had no idea how the wedding world works. it was a valuable learning experience. I've no plans to do it again, that's for sure! LOL

A major regret for me -was- the coordinator. I said exactly what I wanted. It was on paper and I sent photos of how I wanted decor…basically nothing we went over happened at my wedding. My wedding was end of May and it’s end of July now and I’m just starting to release some of my upset. I had two people tell me my coordinator(s) (-she had help!!) did not seem very coordinated. The day of coordinator was included with the venue. If I had known I would have hired outside help. The reviews were all great that I saw but on my wedding day with that coordinator…I was totally let down. I don’t know if I shouldn’t ask for some kind of reimbursement because we had to pay extra for the helper.. I was extremely organized with my decor. She even took a photo to my boxes and said she wished all brides did this! One thing we went over for example was how many chairs were supposed to be in the first 2 rows. I said there were 5 in each side with reserved signs. Day of the wedding no reserved signs and 8 chairs on each side. This was disastrous for several reasons…No one checked in with me at all the whole day before the ceremony. They got there at 1 and ceremony was at 4:30. During the reception she interrupted us dancing to get the gratuity money for herself and some of the venders. I had been ready with those before the ceremony! So my husband had to leave the reception for 20mins to look through my bags in the parking lot to give them to her.. is this normal???
Anway…there’s more but I won’t go into it all.

Watching this I am so glad I was able to get married in my husband's small town in India. We were able to get premium packages and have zero stress for just around 13,000 USD which made my dad happy since he was paying lol. I can't believe how expensive stuff is in the US I became soooo thankful for my unique wedding location. We video live-streamed the whole ceremony and reception for all the family back in the US (our crew provided a professional streamer for very little money) who couldn't travel to India and my husband's whole family was in attendance so we had hundreds of guests and it was still not expensive. We got a team of 4 photographers and two videographers, two albums, two wedding videos, a post wedding shoot of our choice, and a post wedding video for around 2500 USD and our photographers did amazing I was blown away when I saw the photos. And I love Asian style weddings because our reception had a stage and we spent the whole reception taking photos and I LOVED it we got every single photo pretty much I could think of and photos with all guests. We had a floating dining room South Indian style so I didn't have to do center pieces, decor, or anything stressful for the eating portion and my wedding planners did everything for me so I had no stress. Plus, where my husband lives bridal parties are not a thing so I didn't have to coordinate bridesmaids we did our bridal party just with kids and we had 11 close family friends and just put them in cute matching dresses and suits it was adorable. So, moral of the story if you are marrying a foreigner definitely look at doing the wedding in their country lol sooooo glad I opened my mind to that it was the best decision I ever made.

i loved our venue and wouldn't have changed a thing, but i think there were some small miscommunications along the way that could have been avoided if my vendors weren't sisters that didn't seem to really be working "together"
we had a meeting with our caterer (sister 1) and they wrote down a promotional offer on our contract, that we decided upon taking AT the meeting. we weren't charged for it right away, but we had about a 9 month buffer on paying the rest in full, so i was under the impression we were going to be charged later on for it. i was under the impression i had a day of coordinator until about a week before the wedding when sister 2 told me it was "just written down as a promotional offer." i had to tell her we did choose to take it, but it didn't matter anymore (i had like 6 days to go- what else was i gonna do? care?!)
i was a little early to the ceremony venue because we didn't have this coordination-no matter how many times we decided on a time to get there, my anxious mother still had us out too early- my husband saw the bottom of my dress, and he had to tell the "coordinator" we did have, that i was already there, since he was paying more attention than she was!
we also never got our champagne toast!
my photographer was also a family friend, and while i'm glad he was able to take photos of my family on my special day, i'm so damn lucky my brother was running around documenting everything on his phone AND mine FOR me. i didn't even ask him to, but i would have hated the day if it weren't for my brother!
small things, but they still haunt me!!

My Mom is a hobby baker and used to regularly do wedding cakes. And they were/are beautiful AND delicious! She now only does wedding cakes for close family and friends if they ask. In all the years of her doing wedding cakes, only 2 ever fell. The one I know about is that the day was extremely hot, the reception venue did not turn on the AC early enough, and that cake was heavy with 5 tiers (and Mom put a ton of support dowels in it). I don't remember if there was 45 pounds of frosting or 45 pounds of butter for the frosting. But it was an unfortunate situation and Mom was devastated. The bride and her family (who are extremely close friends with my family) were very understanding and the majority of the fallen cake stayed on the table so at least everyone was still able to enjoy it. Mom was quite skittish about doing any more wedding cakes after that, but the previously mentioned bride's sister (who got married a couple years later) begged Mom to make her wedding cake as well because they are so yummy and beautiful. At least she requested a 3 tier cake with some sheet cakes.

People have been getting married and having weddings without redundant youtube wedding videos for literally thousands of years. When shopping around for venues I've subjected myself to a lot of couples' wedding videos and it turns me off getting one because they are so boring and formulaic...i'm sorry! They have the same personalized vows playing in the background, the same exact slow motion shots. Makes me cringe. A "home video" kind of vibe is so much more meaningful. Thankfully, I used the Master Plan, and knew the timeline like the back of my hand, so when our “coordinator” was off doing whatever, my wonderful bridesmaids stepped in and helped me with whatever I needed. As well as my incredible photographer who basically acted as the coordinator and told people where to go and what to do.
The day still turned out so well, but it would have been so much smoother if I had been the one to find the day of coordinator (no hate to the lady that did it for us. She technically did everything my mom had asked her to do).
