  • This explains the uses for alternate fingerings to assist technique and intonation. Several examples are demonstrated. More information is available from my book Advanced Fingerings for Euphonium:

The alternate fingerings for Pineapple Poll are so useful. They are what I use anytime I play the piece.

Also, great video! I can hardly wait to receive my euphonium and start playing again after a half century layoff.

I use the 4th valve to play the Eb when playing up, and 1+3 when playing down. When I need to play fast, I use the regular natural fingering. Also I use "open" to play Ab. Those are the only 2 notes that are problematic to me on the euphonium, either due to intonation or difficulty of slotting.

I am not an expert, but it did sound to me that the tone quality on some of the alternate fingerings was not quite as nice as the conventional fingerings - a little muffled perhaps. Was that just my imagination?

Not your imagination! Adding MORE tuning can change the sound and make it stuffy. In some cases, the player can make up for that if they use the alternate fingering regularly (as I used to on my Besson).
