Even in retiring, Neil Peart is awesome. Can't play to his own high standard? Well that's it, then, done. No talking him out of it. That is why Rush, unlike other older bands, never sucked, because Neil and his bandmates never slacked off or phoned it in, always gave a hundred percent. There was nothing like a Rush show for those of us fortunate enough to see them live.
I saw every tour since Signals and there was nothing ever as good in life as seeing them perform live. I've seen many other acts from Ozzy, Maiden, Roth led VH, BB King, Clapton and SRV to Springsteen. Nothing compares.
Class defined. All three members of Rush seem like such grounded men. RIP Neil. Such a sad loss. I remember listening to this when it was originally posted and wondered what may have been alluded to. Prayers and thoughts for the Rush family! So glad I was blessed to seeing them in the 80s and 90s.
I hear your point, but artists make art, that's why they live. Tony Iommi lost fingertips and still created Black Sabbath with some friends. Don't fault ones pain if they NEED to make something epic in honoring a friend. Honestly, I would expect nothing less from them. Make your music Canadians, I'll throw my money at you!
Oh the history......marking my own life since 1978. That's when I herd 2112 and decided the KISS I'd been fascinated with was child's play. Lyrics that inspired me to think more deeply. Music that moved my soul, and concerts that became a reunion with old friends for 35 years. Loosing Niel Peart was my John Lennon, or Elvis. God bless those guys. RUSH. You have enriched my life. Musically, philosophically, and intellectually.
Interesting how they were able to hide from the public ..... Neil's fight with cancer. Obviously at the time of this interview he knew Neil's condition and you can see and hear in his voice the reluctance to stay on that subject for very long, out of respect for his band-mate. Just really sad ......
Sad, yes, but Geddy's unwavering loyalty to his brother of 40+ years is (now) completely understandable and commendable. Makes it even more obvious how this trio remained so completely united forever...
Reminiscent of how Queen handled Freddie Mercury's illness. In either case, I don't know how he was able to keep his composure when asked about the band knowing what was happening.

I saw RUSH in the fall of 1973 at Belle River High School, Belle River, Ontario. The original drummer John Rutsey was with them at the time.I was in grade 9 and after that concert I got my first guitar for Christmas and have not stopped playing since. Thanks Alex for infecting me with the Guitar-Box Bug.
I'd love a follow-up to My Favorite Headache with Alex on board. They could play with their pick of any drummer. It would be spectacular. It's ok to say goodbye to Rush. It hurts my heart, but it's ok. On to new things!!!🌠🌌💙
God bless you all Geddy you guys have been one of my favorite bands since you guys started and FM radio was new my older brother has always been a huge fan as well..... ...we wish you Alex and Neil the very best MERRY CHRISTMAS GUYS
The greatest rock band of all time. No one comes near their total combined musicianship, which includes lyrical composition. No one sounded better live. No one put more thought and care into their live performances. No one knew..........I would personally LOVE to see Geddy and Alex get Taylor Hawkins or Portnoy or even Grohl to man the drum kit and play small venues playing both new music and selected Rush tunes. B Sides.........Hats off to Neil, , he deserves to go out the way he wants to go out. They were completely blown off by the masses and critics until those people woke up and realized what the devout followers of this band had been saying all along. Now Rush is revered globally and cited as main influences by most named musicians out there. All I want for Christmas is to see them play shows again.
So much respect for Geddy, Alex, and Neil. All very gracious and patient with repetitive questions. I’m satisfied to have seem RUSH 4 times (1988, 1994, 2007, & 2008) the last of which was from the 10th row. I wish them all the best!
As a major and serious Rush fan, my hats off to Neil making such a huge and personal decision. If I can project my hope, Getty and Alex would make some beautiful noise with a completely different sound than their history. Maybe adding in other great musicians who would contribute to a different sound. maybe something more bluesy or more acoustic in their music. I can see (hear) drummers like Stewart Copeland, Jason Bonham, or even a number of jazz percussionist etc... That is my hope and they succeed in their history of music.
"Retired" means just that. If Neil just needed a long break, he wouldn't have said retired. Rush officially ended after their last show. We can only hope Geddy and Alex release new music.
Of course he's no longer with us. But, just for the record, I understand he said he was retired after his wife and daughter died and it turned out to just be a long break.
12 times over 40 years. What a ride. The first time they opened for Blue Oyster Cult and Styx in Binghamton, New York. Thanks for all the memories guys.
Great interview!!! Also can you Imagine the trolls who would attack Neil if he continued and his health could not produce his high standard of play. !!! They would ridicule and taunt him. It is great that he has come to the fork in the road and has decided to take the road less travelled. He will always be number 1 !!!
@@rickleblanc8900 Saw them on their R40 (41 actually) tour and though I am a huge Neil fan (drummer if you can't tell by the handle); he was incredible, but had lost a step, he knew it and was frustrated by it. I can understand his wanting to retire. When you do the things he's done and then can't do them anymore, that's gotta suck hard. I think back on "Losing It" and just wonder if Neil looks back on that song as prophetic?
@@josephlamadrid1799 True He has done enough!! He appears to be a decent guy. I think people would be able to see him riding his Motorcycles. I think that passion will be his retirement mind set.
I first heard Rush in 1977 when a guitarist friend play "Anthem" off the Fly by Night album for us on his turntable in his parents home. I was hooked immediately. Unlike any other music I'd ever heard up until then......I still love that album.
Oh Ok, Geddy, go and make the music. If you and Alex still got it in you, and you feel that people will still care then go ahead and do it. Everyone else, get off of Neil P's back. The guy played his Goddamned heart out (and probably destroyed his body) for us fans for 40+ years!! If there is people out there hoping and wishing and praying that Neil comes back, please don't. Enough already. If he is really retired, THEN HE'S RETIRED!! GET OVER IT!!!!
@@davidtx8777 Certain selfish fans that don't realize how taxing touring and playing can be on the body as you age. We were lucky that Neil even wanted to come back after what happened to him in 1997. I never got the chance to see Rush live and that's okay, they got over 40 years worth of music to listen to and they have live concerts films.
We Fans are so fortunate to have grown up being inspired by the genius that is Rush. I feel like I am, who I am, in large part due to Rush having such a profound influence upon my life. Thank you Neil, Geddy and Alex!
Rush made the rough times in my childhood bearable and Geddy has been a huge part of my life for 35 years. I'm incredibly grateful to him, Alex, and Neil for phrasing the world in ways that I could relate and emote. Geddy is such a cool guy. I play the bass because of him and admire his on-going passion for life and music. I sincerely hope he finds a way to make more music. I loved his solo album, and loved Alex's solo album as well. They were remarkably different in tone and style, Geddy's smooth and approachable, Alex's was grungy and dirty and mysteriously messy in a wonderful way. Honestly, if I could meet and spend a day with any person alive, it'd probably be spending a day with Geddy hanging out at his house, checking out his bass collection, and talking music with him. Alex & Neil would have to arm wrestle for 2nd and 3rd spot.
Wanted just this part: 13:20 since Geddy and Alex had to know about Neil's condition. I do see a sadness when he talks about Neil being "retired", but at first glance you might think just a bit of melancholy.
1/19/79 my 1st Rush concert on the Hemisperes tour at the Palladium, NYC. 40 concerts, 18 tours...oh my, I need more. Geddy can still hit those high notes.
I have listened to many interviews with Rush and particularly Mr. Lee, and have to give equal props to the interviewers in this one. They were articulate, dynamic, and brought the listening public into the room without coming off as PR ratings monsters. Well done all around!
While I don't see those three getting together on stage for a reunion ever again, I do see Neil possibly contributing to writing a song or two for his friends!
The best part about any interview with members of RUSH is their intelligence. Down to earth, smart, generous, and among the top 5% of musicians in the world. Getty is maybe the best bass player in rock or any other genre. So fun to watch and FAST. Amazing guy.
Man, Geddy Lee has done a ton of press lately. i know that he is promoting and pitching his new book. But we have seen and heard him on like every radio and internet platform in the last week. Ultimately, the discussion always goes in the direction of status of Rush, Neil Peart and his relationship/future work with Alex. So we get a lot of repeat questions and similar answers. I've got to say though that if you want an interview that is totally different and kind of independent from these standard interviews, check out the one he did a few days about with Canada's 'CBC' network. The radio show is called, 'Q'. Check it out. The interviewer really knows his stuff. Plus, he doesn't ask the usual, standard questions posed at every aging musician that is wrapping up his working career. Check it out. .Geddy Lee of CBC's, 'Q', radio show. The video is on RUclips if you want to watch the video that goes along with the radio show.
Yeah, Alex and Geddy were cool as heck. They would hang around after shows, meet and talk to fans. Neil is great drummer and lyricist, but he is a Dick. He would leave immediately after shows to avoid fans. Yes his wife died and it is terrible, but he took off for how long, and nearly destroyed Rush, now he has done it again!? Get another drummer and tell Neil to go to hell.
Well, no it's not a minor thing to have brain cancer because it slowly takes your entire known experience of reality away from you. It's amazingly cruel, not some easy ride out of life.
Thank you for posting. Long time Rush fan and Q104.3 listener. It's hard to accept that we get old, and our bodies just can't do the things our minds expect them to do, so I'm sure for NP's sake, it was right. I don't sit in his chair, or wear his shoes, so I have no reason to judge. I'm just happy I was able to see them as many times as I did, and still listen to 2112 like it was the first time I've ever heard it. Just simply a great band... no drama, no BS, no dumb back story... drug overdoses.. etc.. etc... Just a simple great band that made great music for all that loved to listen to it. If you didn't... well... that's your choice. Long live By-Tor and The Snowdog.
Class Act and such a wonderful career and a epitome of musicianship. Long Live Rush! Thank You Neil, Geddy and Alex for the memories and some of the greatest music put down!
Major props to Geddy for respecting Neil's wishes and not letting the cat out of the bag. You can see in his eyes when asked directly about Neil around the 15 minute mark that he's sad for his friend.
God I love RUSH and YES for over 4 decades! Made for a happy life! Loved the concerts! RIP Chris Squire. Geddy is an angel soul, too. What a great dude!
Ive been a Huge RUSH fan from the very first time i heard 2112 played in its entirety on Christmas eve 1981 on kshe. Never missed a RUSH concert since 1985. My oldest son went with me to see the R40 tour. He too is a fan of RUSH! I also play the bass because of Geddy. I was sad to hear of their retirement but understand and respect their decision. I wont be surprised though if in the near future we hear that Geddy and Alex decided to make some more beautiful music together!! "The more things change, the more they stay the same!"
Rush is the greatest band ever and the members are the nicest and coolest guys in rock. They have never acted like asshole superstars. Just genuine guys who loved what they were doing. Thanks for the amazing discography, I will never get tired of it. I think I'll listen Presto and Counterparts today.
Seeing Ged made my Christmas. Despite seeing just about every tour since Hold your Fire, I selfishly and likely in agreement with umm, all Rush fans, want to see Rush live again! We love you, Geddy!
On Rush’s last tour…at the very end, when Geddy yelled, “goodnight” and walked off the stage, I had no idea this would happen, but the realization that I’d never see Rush play live ever again…I freaking cried…my wife hugged me and then we walked back to the car and I couldn’t speak during the long walk.
Geddy's said it before, "There IS NO Rush without these three guys." Minus any of the three, it's simply a different band with different songs and a different name. Rush is done. Even Neil's website is a ghost town; nothing new on it for 2 years. He's cut himself off, completely focused on real life now...being a dad and husband...stuff like that I presume. I miss Rush...knowing they'll never perform again. But, I'm happy to let Neil get on with his life. I think that entity has given more than enough to the world of music.
Most excellent interview . Geddy I don't agree. SO many ppl would not have a problem whatsoever with a "condensed" Rush show , I say with utmost respect
I've seen hundreds of shows, and Rush was always the best group that I ever saw live. Never lost a step, always put everything into the performance. That's why I saw them more than I saw any other group. I'm thankful for every one. I hope Neil enjoys his much deserved retirement and I hope I get the chance to see Geddy and Alex somewhere down the road no matter what they do.
Much respect for Alex and Geddy keeping Neil”s illness private.
Yes. But it hurt like hell by his death.

Thanks Alex for infecting me with the Guitar-Box Bug.
How awesome! Chris Squire was, is, and will always be my favorite bassfolk.
Moving Pictures Tour 4-4-81 Phx Az, a show i will never forget !
I'd love a follow-up to My Favorite Headache with Alex on board. They could play with their pick of any drummer. It would be spectacular. It's ok to say goodbye to Rush. It hurts my heart, but it's ok. On to new things!!!🌠🌌💙
MsCygnusX1 it would be great to have many drummers and maybe even Neil on one song (not gonna happen) but call themselves My Favorite Headache.
A follow up would be awesome. I think Matt Cameron did a fantastic job on MFH and I would be thrilled if he'd drum for Geddy again.
God bless you all Geddy you guys have been one of my favorite bands since you guys started and FM radio was new my older brother has always been a huge fan as well..... ...we wish you Alex and Neil the very best
MERRY CHRISTMAS GUYS
Copeland would be a great choice!
Right now would be a great time to assemble a supergroup and just have fun with it.
I'd love to see them team up with some younger people, lots of talented nobodies out there the world needs to see.
bryede Soundgarden members 😁🤘🏻
They need to hook up with Mike Portnoy. He's a huge Rush fan and I'm sure he'd jump at the chance to play alongside his idols!
My Favorite Headache was one of my favorite recordings of his. I hope that he releases new solo material in the future.
@@CaseAgainstFaith1 - so you're saying Neil might still come back. Cool!!
Neil stopped at the right time. Better to retire at the top of your game than carry on and deteriorate and fade away.
K P that’s what happened to Keith Emerson. Fans ridiculed him and he committed suicide.
@@josephlamadrid1799 True He has done enough!! He appears to be a decent guy. I think people would be able to see him riding his Motorcycles. I think that passion will be his retirement mind set.
😢💕🤢
I first heard Rush in 1977 when a guitarist friend play "Anthem" off the Fly by Night album for us on his turntable in his parents home. I was hooked immediately. Unlike any other music I'd ever heard up until then......I still love that album.
The studio Anthem is one of those songs I can listen to over and over and never get bored of
Oh Ok, Geddy, go and make the music.
Exactly. They owe us nothing. We owe them everything.
Yeah,i agree
Agreed, Neil has done yeoman service and then some.
Who is on his back?
@@davidtx8777 Certain selfish fans that don't realize how taxing touring and playing can be on the body as you age. We were lucky that Neil even wanted to come back after what happened to him in 1997. I never got the chance to see Rush live and that's okay, they got over 40 years worth of music to listen to and they have live concerts films.
Thank you for sharing that with us Mr Lee. Thank all of you for the music, Happy New Year to all of you, live long and prosper
Geddys a genius and so underrated is RUSH!!
not underrated in the slightest.
How is Rush underrated?
They've been legendary since the 70s!
There are plenty of underrated artists out there, but Rush isn't one of them.
Underrated ?????????????????...what do you mean by this ???
Underrated? No. Underappreciated by the mainstream? Abso-fuckin-lutely!
We Fans are so fortunate to have grown up being inspired by the genius that is Rush. I feel like I am, who I am, in large part due to Rush having such a profound influence upon my life. Thank you Neil, Geddy and Alex!
Fly by night was my very first album. Rush fan forever.
No he can't. Lol
It makes so much sense now. They knew Neil was sick. ❤️
Thank u
I'M READY FOR SOME NOISE. Geddy it was an honor meeting you last week and the book is magnificent. ILY ♥️ 🙌
Ged is such a cool dude. I met him and Alex through a friend of Alex's and both of them were very nice humans.
that's cool, but it's odd that you add "humans" to your comment. i think most people on earth would know they're humans upon looking at them.
I will cherish seeing RUSH for the rest of my life!!! Thank You!!!
Being December of 2018. Neil's cancer battle was already a huge thing. The respect that they have for one another is also what made them great.
Well, no it's not a minor thing to have brain cancer because it slowly takes your entire known experience of reality away from you. It's amazingly cruel, not some easy ride out of life.
Saw Rush 8 times, between 75 & 2012! They where like a good whine. loved there short movies also. Thanks guys for the memories 😎
Geddy ! Top Shelf
Geddy Lee. THE consummate interviewee...
Minus that nasty cough haha
Class Act and such a wonderful career and a epitome of musicianship. Long Live Rush! Thank You Neil, Geddy and Alex for the memories and some of the greatest music put down!
Geddy talks Rush, Alex, Neil's retirement at the 13:16 mark.
Major props to Geddy for respecting Neil's wishes and not letting the cat out of the bag. You can see in his eyes when asked directly about Neil around the 15 minute mark that he's sad for his friend.
Knowing what we know now, Geddy at the time of this knows of Neil's brain cancer but cannot allude to it.
Right, Captain Obvious.

God I love RUSH and YES for over 4 decades! Made for a happy life! Loved the concerts! RIP Chris Squire. Geddy is an angel soul, too. What a great dude!
Rush has more than earned their retirement. Still I always hope for more studio work, whether it's solo or a collaboration.
From the medieval to the space age ,ethical and empathetic lyrics across the era's. Inspired me no end.good hearted gentleman. Id like to thank .x
I'm a fellow, "Bass Folk"
One of the three greatest guys in Rock. Merry Christmas to all the Rush fans out there.
Lifeson and Lee should do something
Alex has rheumatoid arthitis and csn no longer play either. Geddy states his voice can no longer sing rush songs. Maybe they can do a country album.
@@bearblackhawk9362 yeah, he really started to strain badly around the Snakes tour and sort of went downhill from there
Seeing Ged made my Christmas. Despite seeing just about every tour since Hold your Fire, I selfishly and likely in agreement with umm, all Rush fans, want to see Rush live again! We love you, Geddy!
Imagine being a fly on the wall listening to Geddy and JPJ talk about the bass!...Of course, as a fly you wouldn't understand them but still...
Agreed. NO ONE could write lyrics, let alone play the drums like Neil.
Neil's journey was deeply personal. Geddy made sure it stayed that way. RESPECT!
