Man, Stephen Sommers knows how to make a good monster movie. This and the mummy are my favorite movies along with Dracula untold. Also, I always thought that the werewolf transformation was permanent after the first full moon in this universe. The novelization mentioned something to that effect when the werewolf that turned Valken reverted back to human form as he laid dying, told Anna that he was freed at last.
There is so many movies with great werewolf special effects, but Van Helsing will always be at the top, in my opinion. They actually seemed to be the big, hulking yet lightning fast predators I always imagined a werewolf to be.

I always assumed Dracula used his hypnosis to control the werewolves. Similar to how he talked about having Anna at the end of his strings. So they are less his mindless servants and more just powerful monsters that he found easy enough to control.
I think that Van Helsing was able to fight Dracula due to a mix of it being his first full moon and his own Willpower. As Valken wasn't able to fight Dracula and Carl directly mentions "if a werewolf ever had the will to fight him" It might also just be pure willpower. I mean that's the power fantasy of the werewolf, that there is within all of us humans, an animal, a beast, and possibly, we can unleash that beast, but retain ourselves, gaining both the benefits of out intelligence and personality combined with the senses, strength, and speed of the animal. The tragedy is that we cannot be both the animal and the man, to have one is to sacrifice the other, sometimes permanently.
He did a accidentally kill Anna so he was definitely having to fight the instincts of the werewolf for sure. But I agree with you can helsing extemely strong willpower and maybe a little help from god definitely helped. I doubt many would be able to do what helsing did while in wolf form
Hands down some of the best transformations in monster movies. It went out of its way to see incredibly painful (bones breaking and skin tearing). Also my favorite designs for werewolves and Dracula. To bad we’ll never get a sequel.
I remember watching this as a young teen, and I was so hype when the werewolf fought Dracula haha this movie doesn't get enough recognition, so props to you man 👏 I wish they made a part two and he got to keep that wolf form lol
Also, the Film`s update of Van Helsing was implied to be the reincarnation of the Archangel Gabriel(I.e. His first name being changed from Abraham to Gabriel, his younger age than traditional,Sommers calling him Abraham`s "kid brother", him having memories fighting the Romans at Masada(Suggesting he may be of Judean or Iberian origin) despite remembering very little after that,Dracula calling him 'the Left Hand of God', him not exactly fitting in with his Catholic superiours despite clearly being a man of faith and speaking Latin, the Novelization also notes Anna noticing he has triangular indentations on his back as if wings were once there).
I didn’t know that, that’s actually really fuckin awesome man I’ll have to pay closer attention next time I watch Van Helsing and see if I notice any comments or anything alluding to that.

My favorite part of the film was the mirror portal. The transition from glass to ice looked gorgeous, and the castle on the other side was gothic horror design at its finest.

Great video! My only issue with Van Helsing's lore is that there is really no explanation to WHY only a werewolf could kill Dracula, as you say, he seems to control the werewolves, so why are they his only weakness?
@@coganLollins Yeah that is a big blunder of Dracula's part. Only thing I can guess is that he keeps making them because he's trying to hide that he fears them as his only weakness. Still doesn't explain WHY they're his weakness tho. Lol.
I think It was the Werewolf Venom, because it only killed Dracula when he got bit not scratched or clawed. The venom must have spread pretty quickly to kill him in less then 4 seconds though.

I've heard it said but Victor Frankenstein gave his creature eternal life when he shot it full of electricity. This is just my personal theory, but maybe Frankenstein's monster is the key to granting everlasting life to Dracula's children because the creature itself has an infinite supply of life to give, unlike Valcon or his dad who only had a limited supply of life, being mortal and all.
I loved the look of the werewolves the most. And the batform of the vampires. HOWEVER, the explanations of how vampires came to be, and especially who Van Helsing was and his connection to Dracula felt hamfisted and not well thought out.
