One of my favorites from the 80s is Take on me by Ah Ha. I remember watching them on a Japanese show, Yoruno Hito Sutajio 夜のヒットスタジオ (night time hit stage in rough English translation). I LOVE songs from the 80s but my husband cringes at it lol.

I’ve never been a fan of Michael Jackson as a person (nothing to do with the molestation accusations), but you can’t deny his talent with both singing & dancing. He has a string of iconic hits that everyone knows the words to.
My personal favorites were always either by Phil Collins or Genesis. Land of Confusion, Invisible Touch, Tonight, Tonight Tonight, That's All, One More Night, Sussudio, Easy Lover etc.
NKOTB over Prince? No I don't think so, it's pretty sad When Doves Cry is not on this list. I despised Bon Jovi with a passion in the 80's but even that would be more in line than NKOTB.
I hated NKOTB back then as well. However they were so big, it was sickening. The girls in my school never stopped playing them. Found out putting the songs on were a good way to pick up girls though.
You needed to make top 20 for the 1980s, since that was the decade with that best music, you could've included these must have hits... A Ha - Take On Me, Donna Summer - She Works Hard For The Money, Culture Club - Karma Chameleon, Prince - Purple Rain, Bonnie Tyler - Total Eclipse of the Heart, Pat Benatar - Love Is A Battlefield, Cher - If I Could Turn Back Time, Melissa Manchester - You Should Hear How She Talks About You, Karla Bonoff - Personally AND Janet Jackson - What Have You Done For Me Lately . There ya go and you're welcome, that'll round out your top 20.
For what its worth, did anyone notice that Madonna and Whitney Houston were on both this list and the Top 10 Pop Songs from the 1990s? Oh, and I know its probably because of a certain cartoon from the decade, but what about The Touch from Stan Bush?
As for the No.2 choice, it's Teddy Thomson's drumming that give the song its figurative heartbeat. The same adage goes for MJ too. Quincy and Nile Rodgers new better than to adulterise with drum machines. Quality!
The age of music sure has changed! I'm from the 60's through 80's - all during that time there were songs that EVERYONE knew. That is no longer today - the world has changed too much. Sad.
I agree with most of the songs in this countdown. However, other eighties songs that I fancy are "Straight up" from Paula Abdul, "Control" from Janet Jackson, "Never gonna give you up" from Rick Astley, "Hey Mickey!" from Toni Basil,"Holding out for a hero" from Bonnie Tyler, "All that she wants" from Ace of Base, "Brother Louie" from Modern Talking, "Rgythm is gonna get you" from Gloria Estefan and many others.

He breaks my heart into pieces when i listen to him because his voice is holding three angel's and his heart is filled with love! he was so gentle and kind! Yes he had to leave us but god needed his best angel back 😇😌 but his spirit and soul will never die!!
to maybe clear it up, i was born in 81 and i definitely know who NKOTB is, but have never heard of New Edition. maybe that's why she said it? She may not have even heard of them.
Lol, when NKOTB themselves thanked New Edition for paving the way and they STILL get discredited. Just for fyi, for those who don't know. New Edition came first, their former manager realized the concept was money and as NE started to age up he decided to take the *exact same concept* and do it with "white boys" and went on to create NKOTB. So when I say they came first, I meant literally. (I didn't include Jackson 5 since they were more a band as some brothers played instruments)
We're gonna need a bigger list. Cause there are so many songs from the 80s that we all need to hear! I'd start with, Love is a Battlefield by Pat Benatar.
What about ....... With or Without You - U2 Everybody Wants to Rule the World - Tears For Fears Back In Black - AC/DC Sweet Child of Mine - Guns N Roses Every Breath You Take - The Police Blue Monday - New Order too name a few.....
I swear 80s has some of the best romantic songs. Just the quality is so breathtaking. I have always thought of the 80s as the dance decade as it has some of the BEST dance songs ever. Like...when you have movies like Dirty Dancing, Footloose and Flashdance plus big icons like Whitney, Madonna, Michael, Cyndi and many others....I mean how can the 80s not be the dance decade? 80s just rule.
1: thriller
2: like a prayer .
3: girls just wanna have fun .
4: Billie jean .
5: like a virgin .
6: sweet dreams.
7: i wanna dance with somebody.

Walking on Sunshine deserves more than an honourable mention!!! That's a brilliant song(I have seen Katrina perform it live at Leeds Pride too-everyone was dancing and singing along-you couldn't shut us up!
80's songs and fashion trends that time were amazing.
Bright and colorful clothes and the hairstyles are fantastic.
I agree with you. Growing up in that time I do feel that the colour of clothes nowadays is boring. Never liked shoulder pads and some of the fashion. But loved the rest. I even had a perm with very curly hair.
I knew Michael would be first
It would have been Michael or Madonna.
It had to be Michael, his fans always freak out if he's not no.1 in a list. MsMojo doesn't want dislikes. Madonna could've easily been no.1.
So did I...how can MJ not be first on any 80s pop countdown?
For real!
OH sure it is! but I thought it's Thriller instead of Billie Jean though
PAT BENATAR "Love is a Battlefield"/"Hit Me With Your Best Shot"/"Shadows of the Night" etc. I mean, come one, Benatar DEFINITELY deserves a spot on this list SOMEWHERE!

I LOVE that song!!

There are only 2 singers that deserves the #1 & #2. The King and the Queen of Pop
That would be MJ and Diana Ross, not Madonna!
@@MrJon76 Nah maddona is queen of pop
They're MJ & Madonna, no less, no more.
Yes MJ and Madonna ruled the 80’s. I rly like them both.

Duran Duran! YESSSSSSS! I'm SO GLAD it's on here!
I love just about all Michael Jackson's songs but cher in my opinion should of been on here she also had a lot of good songs.
I never realized how many songs from the 80's I like! :)

Hey MissMojo, amazing list, but Thriller was the most important songs from the 80's and from MJ.
It might have been important but Billie Jean much better
I was thinking "Beat It".
Hey Maurice DeShawn, Billie Jean was actually MORE important than Thriller because Michael fought for it so that it was the first music video by a black artist ever played on MTV. Much as I love Thriller, and I really, really love Thriller, overall breaking black artists onto MTV at that time was more important than a fantastic long-form video.
mj had a couple of number ones
"a couple" HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Love how you included Debbie Gibson. Electric Youth even had it's own perfume. My sister wore it every day. Great decade for music!
Where's (I've Had) the Time of My Life??
That song, "Time of My Life", was written decades earlier, duh.
Hey, msmojo, where the hell is "Total Eclipse of the Heart" by Bonnie Tyler? "Love Is a Battlefield" by Pat Benatar? "When Doves Cry?" by Prince? "Alone" by Heart? "Sweet Dreams" by the Eurythmics? Those were big back in the day and better songs than some of the ones on this list! WTF?! Pathetic...

I disagree with your number one, I think Thriller was his greatest hit of all time.
I like Thriller more, but Billie Jean was the right choice in this case, since it's MJ's most popular hit.
i love Michael Jackson but i have to say ur wrong. its obviously smooth criminal!
Micheal is just #1
I’ve never been a fan of Michael Jackson as a person (nothing to do with the molestation accusations), but you can’t deny his talent with both singing & dancing. He has a string of iconic hits that everyone knows the words to.
I love my mj
You should totally do Top 10 Rock Songs from the 1980s! I love 80s music so much!!!
I would be so mad if Michael wasn't #1. He is !!
No list is a true list unless Michael is #1. The man was an icon. His music is timeless.
Best music decade EVER!!!
I would’ve picked “Thriller” over “Billie Jean” for Michael Jackson because of how much of an impact it made on pop culture.
I mean Billie Jean introduced Michael Jackson's moonwalk, it definitely had more impact than thriller both are great tho
Michael Jackson is the undisputed King of Pop.
nothing beats like the dancing in beat it
My personal favorites were always either by Phil Collins or Genesis. Land of Confusion, Invisible Touch, Tonight, Tonight Tonight, That's All, One More Night, Sussudio, Easy Lover etc.

"If I Could Turn Back Time" is def better and more iconic than "Hangin' Tough". No offence to NKOTB

I agree. "Hangn Tough" may be 1989 but it screams bad 90s music. Where was "Purple Rain" or "Let's go Crazy"? No Prince? Whaaat?!!

Scarlett hart I just didn't know he was such a good dancer!
He wasn't that is a stunt dancer doing all those moves with a few close ups of Kevin cut in.
I guess he danced in space too inside Apollo 13 lol
YES, YES, YESSSSS!!! Ilove that the New Kids ended up on this list!!! I STILL LOVE THEM
I’m biggest block head
"The Granddaddies of the Modern Boy Band"... So we're just gonna act like New Edition never existed right?
No, they're the great-granddaddies!
new edition was a copy of jackson 5. new kids was the new template
Yea but New Edition ae pioneers and inspired so much artists along with Michael Jackson
to maybe clear it up, i was born in 81 and i definitely know who NKOTB is, but have never heard of New Edition. maybe that's why she said it? She may not have even heard of them.
Lol, when NKOTB themselves thanked New Edition for paving the way and they STILL get discredited. Just for fyi, for those who don't know. New Edition came first, their former manager realized the concept was money and as NE started to age up he decided to take the *exact same concept* and do it with "white boys" and went on to create NKOTB. So when I say they came first, I meant literally. (I didn't include Jackson 5 since they were more a band as some brothers played instruments)
I'm pretty satisfied with this list (except for number 10, I've never even heard of that song)
No Prince? How come?
Even though girls just wanna have fun was released over 20 years before i was born, its still one of my favourite songs!
can do one from the 1970's
We're gonna need a bigger list. Cause there are so many songs from the 80s that we all need to hear! I'd start with, Love is a Battlefield by Pat Benatar.
This list is meaningless without Prince and/or Rick James!
Prince isn't pop
Of course he's pop! Prince was major in the musical cultural zeitgeist of the '80's!
Msfuckingmojo hates Prince..
When Doves Cry is pure pop, and the #1 song of 1984
Who cares about prince or rick James at least watch mojo was smart enough to put Michael Jackson first -_-
Good choice for number 3!
WHRE IS JANET!?!?!?!?!?!
Watchmojo or Ms. MOJO has yet to do a Top 10 Janet Jackson songs....
Do they have something against Janet or is there a rule they have that says that only one Jackson per list?
+Husam Elzien only one Jackson per list is allowed*
+Husam Elzien mojo logic?
+Husam Elzien mojo logic? Janet could easily get the second spot with rhythm nation
Freaking awesome love most of these songs still today
mj of course is the best one
Andrew Brunnette STOP strolling and hating son. I sae you on a Michael Jackson video. LMAOOOOOO get a life my nigga
Andrew Brunnette Elizabeth Taylor gave MJ the name king of pop and not all MJ fans sound like that I personally love Prince and MJ
Every time I hear 'In the air tonight' by Phil Collins, all I can think of is the Gorilla in the Cadbury Chocolate advert!!
I'm glad In the air tonight is on here but what about sussudio
IChooseToBelieve 246 I always thought that’s all by genesis was a great song of the eighties.
What about .......
With or Without You - U2
Everybody Wants to Rule the World - Tears For Fears
Back In Black - AC/DC
Sweet Child of Mine - Guns N Roses
Every Breath You Take - The Police
Blue Monday - New Order
too name a few.....
Why Billie Jean? Why? Thriller is so much more iconic and just a better song.
Thriller was more iconic for it's video. But Billie Jean is MJ best song.
thriller a better song? lol, thriller is just so commercial... billie jean is a true funk track
serina sommer
Thriller is overrated and nowhere near as good as Billie Jean
I'm a Huge MJ fan but i honestly don't like the song thriller, i like the video but....
Billie jean deserved the Spot
Billie Jean is much better. The only thing Thriller wins against Billie Jean in, is the video.
