- Here are the final moments of Carlton Cinema before it went off-air on ITV Digital.
Sorry for the poor quality, it is a capture I did a few years ago from VHS in an era when computer memory was at a premium and the internet was still slow. If I ever find the tape recording, I'll upload a better quality version! To learn more about ONdigital and ITV Digital go to www.onhistory.co.uk
On March 31st 2003 Carlton Cinema closed for the final time, they showed a montage of films they showed for the past 4 years. A curtain was shown with the date that launched on top (November 25th 1998) to the date it closed on the bottom. After the curtains faded, the DOD was still visible for 15 minutes, at Midnight, the transmissions were finally shut off.
Great movie channel, I had this on my OnDigital subscription and it often sneaked out uncut versions of movies the other networks would question and edit heavily.
It showed movies in their original quality in wide-screen format or letterbox format with digital stereo audio and Dolby Surround where available.
Before it closed, it was in negotiations with Sky to launch on Skydigital on their variety mix subscription pack but negotiations failed at the final hour.
If it did appear on Skydigital then it would have been a great addition to their offering.
