“But I always thought I’d see you again”
Crushes me
For me it’s “Sweet dreams and fine machines in pieces on the ground”
@@westhighlands522 hi. I think it's Flying Machines in pieces.....that was the name of his first band. But I'm not sure, to be honest
‘I’ve seen lonely times when I could not find a friend’ - ouch
It was about a childhood friend of his that died by suicide. At the time he was in London working on his first album, his friends and family didn't want to distract him in the middle of his big break so they didn't tell him till six months after it happened. Really makes it even sadder.
She died
❤1969 I saw him at the Main Point in Bryn Mawr, PA. Small venue, sat right in front of the stage. I am 76 now, long time ago.
Great campus!
Have never gotten tired of this song…
"The plans you made put an end to you" Brilliant.
Absolutely! The volume knob is always guaranteed to be turned up whenever it plays.
He's kept it updated over the years.
I feel sad knowing that our great generation is ending. Have you ever been aware of the moments in life as being your finest or is it only in retrospect you realize the moments that were great just pasted you by? I love the great music by this generation of singer songwriters. Thanks James for your contribution to humanity.
This is a great comment
Your generation, your music is engraved in our genration's DNA (x) and my daugthers(z) and my grandkids(whatever the hell the letter is) for pepetuity. Yes we have our music - 80's and 90's etc but YOUR Beatles change the way we listen and preceive music as a whole, forever. Actually, your MLK, your Muhammed Ali, your Andy Warhol, etc were NECESSARY for us to have the opportunity to have an open mind, to discover new things, to dare to try, to live life free with no remorse or reservations whatsoever and to care for your fellow friend like your hippies did. We got that from your generation and pass it over to our kids etc. So no, your generation is not ending.
Too bad you tanked the economy, environment & foreign policy on your way out. Thanks, I guess.
Retrospective always.
Fortunately I’ve passed my musical tastes and various genres onto my children. They Love James Taylor
A lot of us heard this song in the military thousands of miles from home. Great song about loss.
He was 21 years old here, incredible.
And now 76 - crazy - isn't it?
Just a kid.
wow.... just wow....
To write such a beautiful song at that age is crazy. Wisdom!
My father fought on Okinawa when he was 19.
Hard times make you hard.
In the midst of the civil turmoil of the late 60s and 70s, James Taylor's warm, soothing voice, haunting lyrics and simple yet beautiful musical style were an anchoring point for a great generation.
Agreed, my parents were of his time, but this song always hit me in that at the time he was writing this he was rehabilitating from heroin, and one of his past bandmates at the time was in a fatal plane crash (all of the former in these lyrics). Such a great song. James Taylor and America were a couple (of many more) of the greats of the era
I am a huge James Taylor fan, I have never seen this video before. Thank you.
I am now 68 and think about the better days of my past. Music had meaning then and it was simpler times. Wish my child & Grandkids could live those kind of days.
How true! I am also 68 and still go to the gym, and the music they play is hip-hop and screeching heavy metal. These poor souls have no idea of the music, with poetry and melody describing an authentic life and not some cartoon caricature of life. Plato Cave, as it were.
I am 33. I love and admire these tunes from before my time
Bet your grandparents thought your music was hippy shit
Your grandkids will be just fine. You're still young. Live like it. I understand you must be having a tough time but as long as you draw breath you can create, and love... Don't ever believe that can't be your future.
In the 50s & 60s, older generations held the same attitudes with classical music being supplanted by rock. The poor hippies and burn-outs had no idea of the beauty of the classics and were allured by the blaring perverseness and excess of rock. Sound familiar?
Many Baby Boomer's parents felt the same way about over-sexualized and explicit rock and roll songs that many BB/Gen X feel about Millennial/Gen Z's interests in rap/etc.. Hell, the rock and roll revolution actually pioneered the drug culture that continues today at festivals. That doesn't mean hundreds of years ago we didn't enjoy getting down and having some good dirty fun. In the context its done today though, that started really with rock and roll. You might counter that rock and roll had soul and sounded good, and rap doesn't. Your parents' generation countered the same about the Classics and Jazz. Rock and Roll was soul-less didn't/sound good to many of them. There's no absolutes. Some Greatest/Silent generation loved rock and roll. Some BB/Gen X love modern genre's.
Rock was littered with songs describing caricatures of life. You probably don't remember a lot of the shallow chart topping songs from the 60s/70s. Look back at some of the billboard charts from the time and see how many of them had songs that held fleeting significance culturally.
There's lots of fresh artists making beautiful guitar-heavy music. They're not the mainstream chart toppers anymore but that's ok. The same happened in the 60s/70s to Classics and Jazz. They weren't topping the charts any longer but there were still artists producing beautiful works. All these generations later the Classics and Jazz still have their influence and place in music even though they aren't topping the charts and flooding the airwaves as isolated genres.
Life is cyclical. Think about how you would have liked your parents' generation to react to rock and roll. Just accept and celebrate what people like. Ton's of young people don't like modern chart topping genres and listen to rock and roll-derived music; new and old. In general, love what you love and don't try to hold it above or below what other people love. They're both stuff we love.
His voice is just as beautiful still. Saw him at the Royal Albert Hall maybe 6 years ago. He never left the stage during intermission…..talked to the people one on one the whole time. Gorgeous person.
The guy who sings with perfect pitch in his voice ...not many can compare ,really ! Mr James Taylor ..oh yes .
Human. Instrument. Voice. Back when music was for real and you needed legitimate talent to be a musician. 🥰
I remember hearing this song in 1969 and it inspired me to learn to play the guitar. I never became a professional musician, but continue to play to this day. Music has greatly enriched my life and I owe a debt of thanks to James Taylor for providing this inspiration.
@@jackdemask4177 I hear y! This is the first song I ever sang. It inspired me to explore my voice more and, as I got better at guitar, it all started to come together. JT did that for me 🥰🙏
Still plenty of musicians like this if you take the time to look!
@@anyandeverything15 I’m a musician myself so I’m surrounded by talented musicians. But, by and larger, much of the mainstream pop and rock music is over-processed to my ears these days. Smaller underground musicians are where I look for inspiration now.
I'm not looking to argue really. I just tend to get annoyed by the mindset that the pop music of the past was better than it is today. It goes through ebbs and flows. James Taylor wasn't exactly a top 40 star. Almost every era has a ton of completely throwaway and unmemorable hits. Just look at how many copies of a copy of a beachboys there was in the 60's. The only era of pop I can think of that was truly horrid was the party pop of the early 2010's, or maybe some of the horribly overwrought vocals of the late 90's/early 2000's radio rock, but even they had their standouts. By disparaging the present, you're doing a disservice to the artists who ARE in the mainstream and are doing it right. I'm not a huge fan of her tracks but I really like the production on a lot of Eilish's stuff. Likewise people like Laufey are scoring hits with some fairly sophisticated arrangements, while working with some of the most talented session musicians of today. There's great stuff out there, even in the mainstream.
I mean the dudes on stage performing live ..and it sounds as if , your listening to a recorded version of this hit song of his , just incredible .

@@bornwin-sx9oz Yup, even then, you still can't put in a comma. I rest my case.
That’s how you do it. No bs. No auto tune…no histrionic’s…that was just AWESOME!!! Such a great and powerful song…losing none of that with just him singing on a acoustic guitar. True greatness.
The people don't want this anymore. Nowadays the solo artist has to have looping and background tracks and everything. I never did and I never will.
Seriously, just perfect.
I love JT but around this time there was also Tiny Tim and Beach Blanket Bingo. Every generation has stupid fads, we just tend to forget them as time passes and the good ones stand the test of time.
Don't forget the smack!
@@WendelltheSongwriterWe’ve gone backwards in my opinion. The people who don’t want to hear this anymore probably don’t even know what they are missing. James Taylor looks so young back in 1969. I have no idea if he is still living or not. Anyway, all I can say is, “Wow! Wow! Wow!”.
James Taylor and a Gibson J50...perfection
He is so young here.. he went on to live, and still lives, a life of wonder and new experiences. Each moment in time is just that, a moment in time. When you feel at your worst, things can only get better. This is a song of sadness as well as a testament to the future. Your life at whatever age, has value, meaning and new excitement just around the corner. There will always be fire and rain in your existence. Embrace it..
I am 63 and I cry most days for the life that has disappeared …a world that is no longer like it used to be….the music and the audience seem to reinforce the sadness of a softer world …
It was pretty bleak back then too.. a war in Vietnam that seemed to have no end, police shooting American kids, the threat of nuclear war with the USSR, racial civil unrest, 3 kids murdered by racists in the South, Buddhist monks setting themselves on fire. We just tend to remember the good times, and we can be thankful for that.
@@BugGenerat0r Yes you are correct . I am thinking more of a micro level . No mobile phones , little or no technological addiction as we have now , family existed ! You could back pack across the Middle East safely ( my family did that ) It was a far more respectful time towards others , TV had 3 channels in the UK ( thus was far healthier than it is now , children could go and play in the woods without a fear of being kidnapped …etc etc I could go on
Crime was higher in the 70’s than it is now. And families still exist
...Life is only ever how you imagine it to be.
The older we get the less we fit in this crazy world
One of the best songs ever..
One of my best friends grew up with James. He took me to a coffee house in Boston to hear James play. James had this male nurse to take care of him. The best was after the gig when a snow storm moved in and we just sat in a Volkswagon bus, drinking beer, smoking pot and listening to James play in the back!
Pot and beer is for 13 y/o girls. If you didn't shoot smack or its modern day equivalent, you don't measure up.
Now that’s a great memory!! They don’t making them like that anymore.

I’m unclear how the male nurse fits into this memory. Was a nurse in the van providing nursing care?
@JasonArcherKnepper The nurse was there so James would not misbehave by either overdosing or committing suicide. James had undergone intensive electric shock therapy. He didn't talk or do anything- just play and sing. It was a strange night because the storm ,which was almost a blizzard came up and there we were stuck. Fortunately we had a case of beer, a case of beer, a bag of pot - and James for intertainment. So what would been a bummer turned out to be a cool night. James sang until dawn.
Dude. This is absolutely fucking extraordinary.
A man, a voice and a guitar that rocked the world.
I've been a James Taylor fan since about 1970. So thankful that I found this video. The thing that struck me the most is his guitar playing. He really is a gifted instrumentalist and he gets a lot of sound out of thise six strings.
It doesn't get better than this!
I believe you correct in that..when I first heard this it was a studio recording on the radio…almost, probably AS impactive as hearing the first Beatles’ on the radio
So glad youtube / internet is here to offer me gems like this. You'd never see stuff like this on Cable... or it would be very hard to find.
Honest to goodness recovery music at its best. Any good rock songs must have hope and recovery. James Taylor reminds me of honesty and hope in rock music.
Amazing how there is not one wrong note, pluck, strum etc - nor no falter in his voice - not a single time on this live tv performance. JT has always clutch as it gets as a guitar player and performer.
And here's the thing, I saw him live last summer (2023) and if you closed your eyes he sounded exactly like he does here!
As I get older the deep poignancy of "Suzanne, the plans You made put an end to You!" really sinks in.😭B.W.
He came over here to the U.K in the 1990’s, he was on a TV interview , he said something that gave me great encouragement while learning the guitar, when asking about his guitar style he was asked if he was ever worried about forgetting something or making a mistake, he said..’oh I make mistakes all the time, but I’m so good at covering them up no one ever really notices’ 🤣🤣
@@coldeb8911 What a great memory. He still is interested in helping young people with their music....I've attached here a video I think you will find interesting and for me was very touching to see. ruclips.net/video/isB3i1r8pa0/видео.html&pp=ygUXSmFtcnMgVGF5bG9yIEFsbCBJIFdhbnQ%3D
Leland Sklar is very complimentary of James’ guitar playing. Says it’s very unique.
Thank you Mr.Taylor. for all the great music over the years.
James at this stage and this song embodied so much and yet shows what we have lost. What a song, singer and time!
James Taylor is a legend hope the younger generation pick up on his awesomeness ?
His guitar skills do not get enough credit. Such mastery.
This is my burial song.
So many moments in this life I’ve longed for, and so many I wish never happened.
I’ve seen fire and I’ve seen rain.
I’ve seen sunny days that I thought would never end.
I love you all.
Excellent
Good song choice, but I do hope that day is a day far from today!
Great choice. Mine is a song by Queen. 🙏🏻💕
I never thought James would survive. I thought he would go the way of Janis Joplin and Jimmy Hendrix. It encourages me that he not only survived the druggie years, but has thrived and overcome. Every generation thinks they are the best. We are all flowers that bloom and eventually die back. We are a part of everything. We are eternal. The 60’s and 70’s had horrible aspects to them - just like there are horrible things now. Life is full of light and darkness, hope and despair, good and evil. It always has been this way. As we age, it is important to look for the good and the hopeful and the kind and loving. Listen to some of the good music. Talk to some of the wonderful young people around. Life can be good, even now.
He looks like Jimmy Page here.
I think he understood his family history. His uncle warned about opiates will destroy a Taylor. His great-great grandfather Alexander got addicted to morphine due to fighting in the Civil War.
Brilliant, easy, natural artist, JT one of one.
No melo drama, no flashly costums, no moving around, the audience paying attention respectfully only to the music, not filming with smartphone. Peaceful atmosphere, being in the present, genuine performance, divine voice.
This is terribly sad and terrifying to realize that this music golden age is totally dead.
Greeting from France. I just discovered you.
Thank you for this wonderful spiritual music.
People still make acoustic songs like this all the time.
James speaks for an entire generation and many to come because of great artist like him our generation will never die.
So simple so powerful. A prayer for humanity.
"It makes me sad going back to yesterday; We were peace loving people music;love&peace but todays world is just sad and greedy;May God bless all my brothers&sisters"
Agreed its greed now , health matters most
Close your eyes and listen to James, and all is right with the world!
James didn't sing about things being allright very often.
This is when I fell in love with James and his music.
Very humble singer❤
Jame's was 21 in this video. He wrote this timeless song at such a young age.
I just had to comment here~
I'm 67 I've seen fire and seen rain but it ain't over until it's over.
Wake up you old geezers~ life is good!
Get off you tube and get out there and do something for yourself.
Sure it's harder than it used to be but $h!t it ain't that damn bad, come on!
If you don't have anything else to do, do something for someone else.
Help out, make the world a better place like James is still doing!
The old have something to offer too!
Nuff said. I gotta go plow my driveway!
Just a superb performance in every way. Incredible guitar playing.
must have practised to a metronome. fantastic timing
Timeless. I saw him at the Main Point outside Philly. Sat 5 feet from him. He slayed. Sweet Baby James.
Agreed with previous comments. 65 now and these times are gone and are not returning. World has gone to crap, AI, algorithms running our lives and selfish elected officials.
A prophetic song that spoke to multiple generations. Beautiful.
Such a genius. His music and voice transcends time and space.
This is my favorite James Taylor tune, probably because it reminds me of my own friend, Suzanne, who died of alcoholism.
Reminds me of my dear departed sweetheart .. died in his sleep, so they say .. maybe they were being gentle with me? Doesn't matter .. end result is the same .. sobbing ..
@@SundaysChild1966 It is so hard to lose a loved one. I wrote a song for Suzanne but haven't gotten around to recording it as it is still so hard. She would have liked my other songs, though.
Such a beautiful song. That guitar sings. Quite a difficult guitar piece and he makes it seems simple.
"Won't you look down upon me, Jesus?
You've got to help me make a stand,
You've just got to see me through another day." - I'm not a religious guy but this really hits home. Maybe it's the way James says it......
A desperate plea, indeed.
One that I understand.
No! I don't think he sounds like Snoop Dogg! That's an insult to James Taylor.
Louise great words for great moments great music and yes our generation never to be again and that is very sad to say the least but here's the thing the music was shared for all humanity and we hope our grandkids the ones with old souls keep it going but alas it's a generation never to be again but our moments are summed up in that famous vw advert a classic I remember days of our lives I remember faces mostly yours.. wow spot on and of course in my life by the Beatles beautiful moments all wrapped up and to treasure where ever we are magical moments and times was it not
Being a professional acoustic drummer for many moon's I seriously appreciate this.
So much natural talent unlike the fake garbage on the radio today.😊
One of the sadest and most beautiful songs ever! Not only could he rock that guitar and the vocals back before I was born, but man he also rocked the mustache 😅
Sweet Baby James... Cuteness and talent personified...
Reminds me of great times spent in folk clubs in Cape Town in the 1960's...
Great days, great musos... Simon & Garfunkle... Joni Mitchell... Joan Baez... Dylan... Donovan...
I was born in 68 and am a cover singer in more "Gen X" band avocationally, but JT and his songs have always touched me--he exudes talent, kindness, reality. This song is heartfelt, and TBH, JT was a serious cutie
If there’s anything that makes me disappointed in this world,,,, is that James Taylor is rarely looked upon for his wonderful guitar skills!! he out plays many of the so-called guitar gods,,, and some of those guitar gods,,, don’t even know how to fingerpick!!!
I was 16 when this song came out. My generation really get psyop'd into thinking we could change the world for the better. Look at it now! It's all shot.
But it was real nice when it was happening though.
"I'd like to teach the world to sing
In perfect harmony
I'd like to build the world a home
And furnish it with love
Grow apple trees and honey bees
And snow white turtle doves
I'd like to teach the world to sing
In perfect harmony"
The psy-op is thinking we cant change anything.
Ya cant@@gamevne
So then I guess you gave up pretty easy in those days.

Yep some lovely music & optimism, no auto tune & anti honesty tory filth
I always loved this song, but I don't think I ever "got it". Just loved it as a beautifully made piece of music. I lost my best friend a year and a half ago. I get it now.

James was the genius behind the introspection of everyone who connected at that time. And there were multitudes.
Sweet Baby James.

My sister, Susan, went into a rehab center back in the early 80's, and this song is what I had to sing, from my guitar songbook, given to me by a musician friend, wh also suffered from alcoholism.
Thanks for sharing. Nice to see and hear JT playing his old Martin.😎
Correction: it's his old Gibson.
No wonder Paul McCartney signed him, beautiful! ❤
I miss 1969, thanks for taking me back, if only for a few moments.
I miss 1969 too. Thanks for reminding me it has to be said and how to say it. I was in Stockbridge, Massachusetts that summer. Stockbridge one of James Taylor's alma mater's too.
I keep playing this song. My husband died 18 months ago and the lyrics in this song hit me. “I always thought that I’d see you again “. and “you just got to see me through another day “ gets to me. Where did beautiful, meaningful songs like this go? And at the age of 21 to write such an emotional story is amazing. I know that he wrote about his girlfriend taking her own life in the first verse. But even I can’t put into words how I feel now. Beautiful ❤️
We never really die. I really don’t even know if we know we die. It just keeps going and going. But for the ones left behind it doesn’t seem that way.
@@mikezurella6174 My neighbour keeps saying that. He says he’s alright he’s just gone home. I walked out this morning and I wrote down this song
I just can't remember who to send it to
I've seen fire and I've seen rain
I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end
I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend
But I always thought that I'd see you again
Won't you look down upon me, Jesus?
You've got to help me make a stand
You've just got to see me through another day
My body's aching and my time is at hand
And I won't make it any other way
Oh, I've seen fire and I've seen rain
I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end
I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend
But I always thought that I'd see you again
Been walking my mind to an easy time
My back turned towards the sun
Lord knows, when the cold wind blows
It'll turn your head around
Well, there's hours of time on the telephone line
To talk about things to come
Sweet dreams and flying machines in pieces on the ground
Oh, I've seen fire and I've seen rain
I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end
I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend
But I always thought that I'd see you, baby
One more time again, now
Thought I'd see you one more time again
There's just a few things coming my way this time around, now
Thought I'd see you, thought I'd see you, fire and rain, now
He was 21. Incredible.
I feel lucky to be raised in the 60s and 70s. Jose Feliciano seems to have disappeared. He was another great guitarist and couldn’t even see. Unreal talent
"Suzanne, the plans they made put an end to you" refers to Suzanne Schnerr, a childhood friend of his who died by suicide while he was in London, England, recording his first album.
A true talent! James Taylor is great in concert!
James Taylor was discovered by George Harrison and The Beatles and part of that era when song lyrics often talked about peace & love with songs like “All You Need Is Love”, “Give Peace A Chance”, “Imagine”. How we got from those lyrics to what some of things rappers sing about (and that includes female rappers too). Back then lyrics like that were used only used in porn movies. But I respect people’s rights to listen to whatever they want to and no matter how offensive it may be . . . it’s just not my cup of tea.
Twenty-one years old. Wow.
The day he wrote this song, it was a thousand yrs old.
Truth.
Absolutely amazing.
You can see the chronic pain in the eyes of him here, even though young. Depression is an unmerciful thing. I’m glad that in more recent years he seems to have found peace, if not joy.
Stupendous performance
Looks kinda like Shaggy in that shirt. Oops- goofed that first line. He knew it- rolled his eyes. 🙂

What a sublime performance.
Is There a full show somewhere? this is incredible. & do you have any early Willie Nelson clips by chance in your collection?
...but I always thought that I'd see you one more time again.
Back when real musicians actually existed.
That is a beautiful song.

Never knew shaggy from Scooby-Doo could sing like that
Great stuff. I love JT, and he just made me laugh here at the 0:19 thru 0:23 mark - he sang the wrong lyrics and then rolled his eyes when he realized what he'd just sung. He sang, "Suzanne the plans YOU made put an end to you." and then he rolled his eyes. Absolutely priceless!

Now that's an artist... unlike the garbage we have nowadays....JT is just one of a kind....🎸🎸🎸
James & his future wife Carly were an anomaly; their live performances were even more charismatic & appealing that the studio versions of their compositions.
You know, the difference between the comfort that is popular now and the comfort given to musicians decades ago is their way of living and the depths of their inner self.
The technology can already give you ideas.
