The vocal did not have to be gritty, because she was honoring gritty lyrics. Kelly understands the concept and heartbreak of tin man. It’s clear she’s lived it. My suspicion is that she was being respectful to a songwriter that she admires.
I think because Miranda when she sang it and wrote it, it was from heartache, while Kelly who is no longer in that area of her life sang it from a place of healing. I think they are both beautiful and hit differently depending on where you are in your own journey.

I can say there's not a song Kelly Clarkson can't sing. That saying I loved Miranda Lambert with this song even though Kelly comes awful close to any artist songs. She has sang many different songs by other artist and is incredible. When she did the Oscars she was amazing. This song will always stick with me with Miranda because her voice just fits this song. Miranda has written some incredible music and so has Kelly.
I’ve said it before and I will say it again, I do not compare artists. I prefer Dolly’s original “I Will Always Love You”, you can feel her in those lyrics. It came from a personal space, and I am quite biased in my love for Dolly, as it goes back 58 years. There is no doubt Whitney Houston did that song justice. I do not believe any other artist could have done a better job than Ms. Houston honoring that song. Miranda and Kelly are both phenomenal artists with beautiful voices, and they both bring something to the table. Miranda’s will always be my favorite, but it is because she is singing her soul. It does not mean I didn’t love Kelly’s cover. I did.

Kelly sings like she has always done. Kelly hasn't changed, the way people look at her is the only thing that's changed. For some reason, when people lose weight, people start criticizing them, like they don't approve of them looking and feeling better. How sad that is.

I covered a couple songs off of the Marfa Tapes. Could be the best songs ever written. I did Waxahachie (almost went there in the 80's to work at a glass factory as a Moldmaker), and Tin Man. Waxahachie had many more views although I thought I did well on both. Just have to love Kelly and Miranda for always bringing their A game! Burlington Bill busking on the road and here on You-Tube.
