GarageBand for Mac has been around for 18 years now. In that time it’s gone through some pretty major changes.
You'd think after all that time, Apple would have perfected their entry level Digital Audio Workstation... Unfortunately that isn't the case.
In this video I take a realistic look at what features could be added, what existing elements could be tweaked and share YOUR ideas about how GarageBand for Mac could be improved.

I can’t believe I’m about to give YOU a tip - it is possible to change time signatures and tempos mid-song, although it’s a big hassle and not super flexible. If you start a project by importing a MIDI file and the MIDI file has time signature and/or tempo changes, the resulting GB project will reflect the same structure. The hassle of it is [a] you need to first make a midi file with all the changes in it (I used MuseScore) and [b] you can’t make further changes in GB, so if you want to change the length of a section you need to export a new midi file and start a new project (you can then copy/paste from the first project into the new one). All that being said, the one time I tried this I had it all nailed down by the third attempt and GB actually did really well with the time signature changes - if there was a time change in the middle of a drummer region, the drummer adjusted automatically.

I'd like to see more attention to jazz musicians. Why not include at least one jazz drummer, for example? Apple seems to believe no one makes music unless its rock, rap, hip hop or whatever.

I've gotten some of the drummers to do some jazz stuff with tweaking. Tyrell does brushes and stuff, and you can get some softer balled stuff, or some swing stuff.

GarageBand supports switching time signatures. It just doesn’t give you an interface to create them. I used to do this by making a minimal MIDI song from the free Musescore. Upon import, the time signature switches are there, just like they are in Logic. It’s clunky but if that is all you miss, it works. I did switch to Logic eventually.

GB is a great starting point. I resisted upgrade to Logic Pro until I thought I'd gone as far as I could with GB. Eventually it looked like some of the features on LP would make it worth the upgrade so I took the plunge in January (2022). Have not regretted it or looked back and while I'm a million miles from being a competent mixer/producer the shortcuts, menus, selection and automation options plus even just the stock plug-ins and instruments make it worthwhile. Far from being way out of reach I found that a lot of the restrictions I was experiencing with GB were due to its limitations rather than mine.
Bit of a ramble but what I'm saying is GB is free so you get what you're given. It's a fantastic giveaway and window into LP. Don't be scared to upgrade and don't be surprised if Apple spend their money on the paid platform not the freebie.
Patrick's TheGarageBandGuide was the best resource of the many available.

I bought my first Apple, an iMac G4 in 2002, when changing from making 35mm color slide-shows to digital video. GarageBand was a welcome bonus, as I also like making music. At first GB could not even IMPORT midi! A lot has changed since then, and being an amateur GB gives me all I need, no plans to switch to Logic yet. But I agree with all the things you stated over here. All the best, greetings from a rainy Holland.

I would absolutely love it if Apple offered an in-app purchase option to buy and safely install Audio Unit plugins within GarageBand. Would do wonders for the developers who WANT to sell to customers and would do wonders for being able to keep these dozens and dozens of plugins up to date.

WARNING! Just learned a very hard lesson in GarageBand (AGAIN!):
Don't use the "Arrangement Track" until the VERY END, IF AT ALL... I say, don't even risk it.
It allowed me to accidentally delete over a dozen tracks in an entire section with one--unchecked--mis-click!
Several times I went to delete a single region on a single track, without noticing that I still had the arrangement section "selected/highlighted" as well, and instead of deleting the single region that I specifically right-clicked on and hit "delete", instead of that happening, the ENTIRE SECTION of the arrangement was deleted... every single region of every single track within the designated section of the arrangement track. With a simple click, I deleted an entire 32 Bars of breakdown and solos... the f*n hardest to recapture: the improvised solos!
I did notice this the first time and was quick with the "cmd z" to undo, but once, and i still can't figure out how, it escaped my notice that it had happened again... I saved the project, and when I noticed the error, GarageBand wouldn't let me "undo" however far back I needed to, to get those tracks back...
ONCE AGAIN! I find myself completely demoralised by GarageBand before the day even starts...
I'm still cleaning up the last catastrophe: when I lost 90% of my instrument and audio tracks on every project, after an automatic update.... I'm still recovering those files (that were hidden away) and putting them back in their places and reediting them and all that... still cleaning up from that mess...
AND NOW with a simple MIS-CLICK!!! I'm screwed yet again. Thankfully it's just me tracking, so I haven't pissed of an entire band... f*n GarageBand... this is technically on me, for not noticing, but being able to delete (completely delete) an entire section (of 14 tracks) with a single, simple MIS-CLICK is still awful!!! Why no "failsafe" question: "Are you sure you want to delete this entire section?" It asks if I am really, totally sure if I want to delete a single track, if it even has one region on it!!!! Why wouldn't it think to double check with me when I delete 14 tracks with many regions on them!!!
I'm obviously furious. I obviously haven't smashed my computer... wtf am I gonna do, I have no recourse... despite all my rage I am less than a rat in a cage... these files can't be recovered... I'm just screwed
GarageBand get ONE MORE CHANCE! one more f*ck up like this and I'm done with garageband forever... no one cares, but if this happens again, I gotta walk away and either buckle-down and learn logic or some pro-shit or just slide into FL Studio or Reaper...
right now, I'm trying incredibly hard not to care...
    f*ck me.

This is why I had to switch to Logic. Logic is GB on steroids, but you don’t have to dive into the deep end right away. My suggestion when switching over is to keep the interface simple and use only what you would normally use in GB. Then as you discover features one by one as you need them, you’ll find it easier to use. I know there are many many features in Logic that I have not discovered but that’s O.K. I’m learning more each day. Logic is really well laid out, just like GB. I got so used to it that I rarely open GarageBand anymore.

2 things I’d love is an updated sound wave visual when you lock the file showing the plug-in affected wave and multiple sound metering that you can float the window so you can see if all the time.
PS, you can lock your tracks and then right click the project and find those frozen tracks that have all the plug-in effects except for the master effects.

I have, Cubase, Ableton Live and Reaktor Suites. GarageBand has been the only DAW, impossible for me to get through scanning my AU pluggins. I use GarageBand on iOS and enjoy it very much. For it not opening on my Mac,it is just too frustrating and takes up my time. Would love to be able to run a Au VST scan successfully or dismantle it. On Machine 2, I had this problem and I simply changed the pluggins folder not to do a scan on every startup. It now works with scanning and I no longer need that option. Everything works except GarageBand. I enjoy your videos that are very helpful. I know you’re a nice guy. Please, be a Hero!

I've only used GB on IOS versions and loading the last project is annoying to me but nothing more. What's much worse is autosaving when you leave. It means you can't dabble with an existing project unless you create a duplicate first, or manually return things to exactly how they were. A save option is such a no-brainer.

GarageBand is Logic Lite 😁 I think most are aware it’s Apple’s method for upselling Logic and more powerful hardware, but a mixer, time signature, cross-fade, and comping in GB sure would be nice. Lots of Logic forums speculate “Logic for iOS” but that makes no sense to me and would be a huge redevelopment effort. Logic already has Logic Remote for iOS and few people understand how to use it. In my opinion, GarageBand iOS is the future and will be effectively Logic Lite for iOS. Better integration with Logic, will encourage more creators to buy Logic, and this strategy fits with Apple’s cross-selling strategy.

  • @mister-bland
    @mister-bland 2 года назад

Only using it for a few months, but three simple requests as somebody just recording guitar/vox. No annoying popup when I unplug my headphones or interface. Especially on project open. Feature to auto-disable monitoring when the output is changed to Macbook's speakers. Zooming on the tracks to be able to see the waveform. Feels like zooming so we can see transients would be the free software feature that happens before flex time to shift them. /shrug
BTW Current workaround for the latter is to enable automation view, as it increases track height. Though it then becomes a PITA because moving/selecting tracks is hard as the UI wants to add/move automation points instead.

About adding a jazz drummer, I'd love to see a drummer that is an emulation of drummers like the late Jon Christensen and Joe Ballard (of the Brad Mehldau Trio), for example. Jazz drummers should be fluid, flexible and more esoteric, not kiddie crap for "making beats."

woah woah woah hold up you're telling me they actually used to have sidechain compression then removed it?!? wow... so they really just don't want to give it to us then. i hate that for us. even if they don't bring it to Mac, i do hope they consider bringing it to iOS! Adding the ducker function in ios would be amazing, and making it available only if you update your ios then would allow them to force people to have to buy the latest ipads in order to use the features, so i think it justifies as a pro-lite feature.

    • @TheGaragebandGuide

  • @torihanabi
    @torihanabi 2 года назад

Holy shit, biggest peeve about it though is the “last modified” always changing, at least on iOS, when you simply open the project! They need to get rid of that and only show it if you actually edit anything and close without undoing it, because you can’t preview it before opening, you have to open it to listen (and it’s too easy to open projects by accident), if it’s the wrong one it just sets all of the ones you open to “last modified” and you completely lose track of which one is the most recent. Even when I name them I manage to lose track eventuality. If you want to reference an old project and keep it there it’ll bump up to recent even if you just had to copy something for another one 😅

  • @GarryKnight

My cynical side thinks that perhaps leaving out features isn't enough to drive more people to buy Logic Pro. Patrick, showing pictures of your nephew or whatever, at 1:15 pretending this is your younger, more dashing self, is beneath you…! But seriously, a friend of mine once noted that in our photos from late teens/early 20’s, we all looked ‘skeletal’ almost, as if inside we were developing faster than our skin could keep up with - now we just need a special treatment to let our skin know, it’s caught up just fine, it can stop now. But yes, GarageBand is unrecognisable really. My first brush with it was terrible, my first ever Apple device an iPad 4 couldn’t manage 5 tracks and I wondered why Apple let loose such a non-working app. Then, I skirmished with replacing my PC’s hdd with an SSD and grappled with Cubase. Cubase won, and it’s reward was I gladly sold it on, and changed channels technologically, to Apple and a new iPad Pro 2, which finally was able to run GB to an extent that was really useful, nearly as much as I could even make use of. It was very different by then, as you say, and it took a while, and you and Pete Johns, to get my mind around it.
The core reason remains despite me having a used iPad Pro M1, which is really very good with GB: the problems MOSTLY are music problems, with a bunch of days here and there devoted to overcoming obstacles eg Midi2Guitar, neither uses IAA nor AUv3 to work with GB iOS I just discovered…if only someone had told me this it wouldn’t have sat unused for 4 years (I mean in relation to spraying MIDI notes over a MIDI track inside GB iOS/iPadOS). Back to your vid, thanks for the assist through the years Patrick, be well.
[EDIT: when I say the problems are mostly music problems, I mean this is a good thing. The point being music creation, I EXPECT to be locked in mortal combat with chord changes on a six-stringed contraption, and given I on,y recently discovered what the point of a scale is - notes that probably fit together and/or a constraint that creatively is helpful, is my take - it’s clear I need to be focused on that. I resented the cumbersome and massively underpowered PC blocking everything I did. The PC was fine for anything else though, including video editing. But the configuration war to coax it to work with music creation, in a way I could comprehend, was crushing. Logic Pro in a Mac comes close, and so is unlikely to ever entice me except one day maybe, or never, for final production work. I can honestly say that without the youtube help and GarageBand iOS, I’d be stuck with my laborious guitar playing, and at best the multitracker portable digital recorder, upstairs gathering dust. It’s a long, long way, from the absolute luxury, of a DAW like GarageBand iOS. I have tried to record stuff, to make songs, but realise a DAW is a way of concentrating more skill and correctional effort, into a few minutes of time, than otherwise is literally humanly possible. To say that GB iOS was an epiphany for me, is not an overstatement. Some people, find religion.]

I Would Like to have the option to change the software instrument without having to load a new patch in the Sound Library. This is most useful for me because the stock cathedral organ in GarageBand is very quiet even if you max out all the knobs and still sounds like it is in a small venue. I have bought logic to open the instrument plugin to maximize the volume to the organ sound loud like a really pig pipe organ that you would find in an auditorium rather than a small church. Also Isn't the pipe organ the loudest of all instruments? Yes it is but Apple does not make the Pipe organ in GarageBand loud at all or in Logic Pro loud by default.

Excuse my obvious ignorance, but is there any more precise way of moving recorded elements around the track areas other than by dragging via the mouse or locking to the grid pattern? In programs such as Photoshop, I can get positional accuracy using the most minute increments, but in GB I often have to resort to extreme magnification to get things to align or position accurately with the mouse - a particularly tricky task with audio tracks, where there's a wave pattern to deal with, rather than an easily identifiable, and movable, graphical note. Thanks for these videos - and please do ignore (as I'm sure you will) those online creatures, such as 'NotUrBiz', who could quite obviously have easily accessed any of your dozens of videos to 'see what you're about' but chose instead to indulge in a bit of keyboard ego onanism.

One thing I absolutely HATE about Garageband is it's sampling feature. while it appears to work completely fine your first try, the next time you open your project you have to completely reset it or else it'll say "An Audio Unit plug-in reported a problem which might cause the system to become unstable. Please quit and restart GarageBand." This happens nearly every time, and restarting doesn't fix it. in order to fix this, you have to go to EVERY track that uses a sample, go to the Ausampler thing and switch it between mono and stereo.. every. single. time... this is constantly annoying as someone who *only* uses samples from older games to make music that achieves the rich "old video game" feel, such as EarthBound and the Mother series.

The over-focus on simplicity repulses people and the experience is greatly inconsistent with the iOS version. The product is also poorly named for two reasons: it sounds unprofessional AND it makes it unclear that Logic is in fact just the same thing with more features. Get rid of the name and call it Logic Junior and more people will upgrade.

Why mess around with a daw that doesn't do what you want and get the one that does what you want. Free isn't always the best way to go get the results you want.

Are you aware of anyone from Apple watches your videos? Is it likely that they take onboard these sorts of videos that offer constructive criticism and suggestions for improvement. If they don't, they should!

Apple destroyed any hope for ios today. It was a total insult and makes it clear they hate / don’t care about mobile music production and producers at all. They just fed us to the AUM guys cause that’s easy . A total insult period.👽

Apple didn't destroy IOS. They made the decision to bet on the future of Apple silicon. I think your upset because you don't own any M1 gear but that's a PERSONAL problem

@@ninobeatz3983 I could have purchased ten new iPad pros if I wanted too . But apple has proven that they think the iPad Pro is a silicon equipped heart monitor . They resent its existence that’s why they didn’t announce it first . I now know what my next rig will be . And it won’t include AUM or anything like that for kids that like puzzles instead of a proper DAW. Good luck you’ll need it . Oh and did you notice the patent for a laptop with a detachable TOUCH screen ? Everyone thinks it’s a patent for the iPad Pro but it’s really a laptop with a removable touch screen . The iPad pros days are numbered because the new executives hated it the moment it was announced by Steve Jobs the last true visionary who pushed the geeks behind the curtain and did not lick their stuck up asses. And that’s not something I’m happy about because I’ve been using it for fifteen plus years “Dumbo “ peace Christo👽🤣

Why? Why? Why don't people, who have a whole list of things they want for GarageBand, just get Logic Pro? It's the $200 solution. :)
I love GB on iOS, but when I got my first Mac years ago, I went straight to Logic. It's a fantastic deal for the money. Do people not like Logic for some reason? I wouldn't blame Apple at all for keeping GB on a much simpler level. Like many of the apps I use that come free with the computer, I find them lacking in some significant (or annoying) ways, and sometimes choose to look elsewhere for another app I like better. Most apps, I don't much care, and settle for whatever they do and how they do it. Anything important, waiting for Apple to upgrade or change what I don't like isn't the best answer.
