      Also yes he is saying something special, since you're obviously not someone who has created something in your entire life that wasn't biological in nature, you wouldn't really understand. There is no rules to what people create. Believing that someone needs YOUR common sense to make something without being bad is objectively stupid as fuck.
      He's not some mega genius with no man who comes close or some shit, but your inability to understand the basic framework of how entertainment media even works let alone is created is not the reason for that.

      @shai310 4 месяца назад +8

      Yep and what he's saying also proves to be factual. Like look at the MCU in recent years, after Endgame it was less about telling good stories and more about talentless writers interjecting with their own political views and shoving it down people's throats.
      People don't care if the lead is a woman or if a character is gay/trans/any other race. But when you make the character completely focused on that aspect that's when you lose people's interest which means you're also losing money.
      Nolan's track record speaks for itself because he understands how his audience thinks and doesn't try to lecture them in his films.

    • @Spillow-C

      @@Disconnected66 politics are divisive by nature, i think its "common sense" to try to making stories, which are supposed to be for everyone, as neutral as possible, even if they have politics like his last film
      As he said you cant tell people what to think like a politician or whatever, you are a movie director, be a f movie director, which mainly should focus on giving the audience characters to root for and admire, emotional payoffs and stuff like that

      Sadly it kind of is.
      Not participating in discussions of a political matter means that every voice that decides to raise their concerns gains more weight. This is one of the fundamental reasons why political extremism works, as its effect is amplified by the majority of people who decide to not raise their concerns.
      Basically it's analogue to communication as you cannot decide to not communicate as the decision to not communicate with someone is communicating that information itself.

      Here’s the trick. Creatives like Nolan can do political stuff but it’s from a neutral stand point. He can create a character as demented as the Joker from TDK that’s kinda like a right winger taken to an absurd extreme of becoming a domestic terrorist. To him being able to write more left leaning characters in his other movies with subtle approaches in his writing. This works because he’s showing these characters and how they interact in their respective world and isn’t preaching to us “Joker = bad,” “these other characters = good.” He’s letting the audience draw their own conclusions.

      exactly this. an audience can tell, especially these days, when a movie script is written to wag its finger at the audience telling them to fall in line.
      Hell one of my favorite genres and recent games is cyberpunk, which is a heavy criticism of unchecked capitalism. It even has a trans person in it, which the "alt right" should demonise according to the left. But they dont, because its handled with care, tact, and the final product is great.
      Its not one dimensional and actually cares to tell a story beyond just the politics, whereas in most modern hollywood productions every single thing is secondary to the politics it wants to push.

      Great example. As a Christian man, I viewed that whole thing with the Sith like the Antichrist taking his seat, and the Galactic Empire as the New World Order. Love Star Wars episodes 1-6. It was in good taste and it was properly done. Then you see what happens when the politics is biased, and there is a clear agenda being promoted with no rhyme or reason, sacrificing the very fundamentals of the movie itself for the “message”, and that’s what you got in episodes 7-9. In the prequels, the politics were within the story, within the whole plot in terms of the Empire. In episodes 7-9, the politics were outside of the story, with a real life agenda, where the movies were only a vehicle to promote them.

And thats one of the basics of being a good writer, being able to separate your own biases and opinions from your characters and the plot and instead focus on what makes a great story or character regardless of how you feel about that character. I doubt Martin would be buddies with Joffrey, that doesnt make Joffrey any less of a great character though.

    • @hans8656
      @hans8656 4 месяца назад

      @@s1nqyy It's bit of a stretch and the person stating that Nolan's movies are leaning towards conservatism surely didn't have Batman in mind of all movies. You could somewhat make a case for it using Dunkirk as an example but Nolan himself dismissed that notion:
      " Released in the wake of the UK’s vote to leave the European Union, right-wing Brexit apostle Nigel Farage became an unlikely champion of Dunkirk, prompting headlines and articles connecting the two events. Nolan, however, is quick to disassociate the film from any contemporary nationalist agenda or even political comment. “When you’re dealing with real-life events, obviously you’re locked into the reality of those events,” he says."
      A similar reasoning can be applied to Oppenheimer as well. So no, Nolan's movies aren't leaning towards a certain political ideology and only two of his movies are based on historical events that are inevitably tied to political themes.

      Because I do think in the broader picture, I think what makes Nolan's movies so great is that you are able to engross yourself into the world of his movies. They are not trying to make any political point or be a commentary on a real-world issue. I can say the politics in The Dark Knight are conservative-leaning, but what I say doesn't matter because more importantly, the movie's politics is the politics within Gotham and the world of Batman. It puts the world and its story first.

    A good story will present moral dilemmas and not give you any answers. Instead, the characters will make their choices and then choose later how they feel about the outcome on their own. Additionally, the outcome should not always be what the viewer wants unless you want to tell a really boring story. At no point will the story attempt to tell the viewer whether anyone was right or wrong.
    A master narrative writer can write a story where Hitler is the villain and everyone's favorite character in the story was Hitler. Thats what its all about. Dont get it twisted though, its not that anyone has to agree with hitler; its that it should not matter whether you agree with any character ever. You can write a story where every character makes decisions that the audience doesnt agree with and yet we are still very entertained. I will try to write one right now.
    Imagine a drama with a love triangle where the main character chooses to cheat on two women but they find out about each other. In a desperate attempt to keep him from leaving her, one girl lies about being pregnant to manipulate him, which he then pretends to settle with her while he continues cheating behind her back. Eventually, the other girl chooses to murder the "pregnant" girl out of jealousy at which point she discovers she wasnt pregnant but keeps this information to herself. Our main character decides to help hide the body and evade the law because he didnt want to have a kid and grew to resent being tied down and controlled by her.
    No one made the right choice, all the characters were deeply flawed and morally bankrupt, but I'd definitely still watch that movie or read that book.

    • @onechippyboi
      @onechippyboi 4 месяца назад

      @@roadent217 Haha I basically completely ripped it off because it was the first thing that came to mind for a story where every character is a terrible person and I can explain it very briefly using very few characters. Very identical except a few details changed because I knew if I copied it exactly then I would be spoiling the ending to the anime.
      There are very few stories where everyone is awful, and of what I know all of them are anime. The only other ones that come to mind are Redo of a Healer and maybe Domestic Girlfriend. You could argue for maybe Tomodachi Game but I am not certain if there were moral characters or not because that show sucked and I dumped it from my memory.
      I think just lessening the criteria to "most characters are awful" expands the roster of shows tenfold but mostly because they are afraid of making their protagonist the bad guy, and I definitely understand why because if you misstep slightly and paint your genuinely evil main character in a good light then people become outraged. There are two common ways to solve that problem, and the first is "They're just misunderstood and they aren't actually evil" so they're the hero wearing the villains makeup (not really evil). The other solution is to make the antagonists so comically evil that doing evil actions on them becomes somehow justified.
      Both solutions are annoying imo, but some people simply can't watch a story like Breaking Bad and not whine that Walter White sometimes portrayed as a badass when he is also a shitty person. It never crosses their mind that shitty people can also sometimes be a badass and that characters are more complex than strictly good and evil. Better yet, people can't watch a story like "Gushing Over Magical Girls" because the main character is a serial lesbian sex offender. To that I say... they're missing out on peak television.

    Oppie is not political..
    The. Setting is.. but hte story isn’t.. it’s about a man and a thing called hubris.. it’s why what eienstien tells oppie ‘ you have to live with what you have done’.. is so important.. after all the politics.. there is only you and your conscious.. just because you can do it.. doesn’t mean you should - which is why there was a part where they were talking about telling the naxi, etc the tech they had so they dont ‘mutually destroy each other.

    That is a perfect summary of how it should be done. Ask the question, and let the audience find the answer for themselves, rather than trying to shove it down their throats like so many forms of modern media do.

    “I don’t have to offer the answers, I just get to ask the most interesting questions.”
    That’s the basis of most valuable visual and narrative art in the world. Everyone has an opinion and it will naturally seep into their work, but there’s a clear difference between documentary and cinema in the same way there is a lecture versus a conversation. The man gets storytelling and anyone who thinks he’s wrong to think this way clearly misses why his work is so effective and inspiring.

    From 1997 to 2023 according to IMDB, Christopher Nolan hasn't had a movie where he's the director that landed lower than 7/10, his movies total 49 oscar nominations, 18 oscar wins. If you have to believe someone on a subject, why not believe the one who actually makes it work, rather than some random ass guy on the internet.

    He's right, how many political movies has Studio Ghibli done? and not once americans who claim they like his movies have they ever laid back and thought for more than two seconds that they live in propaganda, from princess mononoke being heavily anti war films, to environmentalist films.
    People love "political" films when it fits their agenda (example: democracy dies with thunderous applause) but when it doesn't they either hate it or pretend the movie didn't say that (all the delusional americans that claim they love ghibli even though miyazaki criticizes basically every single aspect of america as a nation)

      There is a difference between a reflection of beliefs and pushing them. It's a fine line but important because dancing this it is how you can promote ideals of value to yourself to others, if such is your main desire as opposed to just telling a great story.
      Ghibi works do reflect a lot of Miyazaki beliefs, but they don't actively push them on others. He also largely avoids painting the side he disagrees with as evil. Wrong or misguided perhaps, but not evil.
      To that end, the true takeaway from Nolan's statement is that not everything is created or needs to be created to push political ideals. People also need to stop trying to assign universal principles as belonging to one political party or not. The power of friendship is not a right or left concept.

  • @Proverb.

    This is exactly what separates good movies from not so good. You just tell a story, there is no intended "message". You just want the audience to feel, something, anything. Stories don't necessarily need a purpose or conclusion, sometimes things just happen and the circumstances can themselves be thought provoking.
