    The red stop arm hanging down in your view will drop down to alert you of low air pressure while driving...after you have the truck running and air builds up, you flip that flag up to the left to reset it for driving, if it drops down while driving you have low or no air pressure.
    That air shut down valve, I believe is the PASS (Positive Air Shut-Off System) valve. It cuts off the air supply to the engine from what I can find.
    What is the tractor protection valve on a CDL?
    Tractor Protection Valve | CDL Air Brake Valves | CDL Air ...
    The tractor protection valve is comparable to a sentry. It monitors air pressure in the trailer. If the tractor protection valve detects catastrophic air loss in the trailer, it tells the trailer air supply valve to shut off air to the trailer. The trailer air supply valve turns air on and off to the trailer.
    The tractor protection valve shuts off the air supply to the trailer, in the event of a major air leak on a trailer, it'll stop the tractor from sending air to the trailer to maintain the brakes on the tractor...you'll have diminished braking power as the tractor would be doing 100% of the braking at that point, but it'll allow you to continue driving to a safe location for repairs.

    I think the shutdown valve may be a decompression valve. The round red flag thing hanging in front of the steering wheel is a low air pressure warning. After starting, and building air pressure, flip the flag up to the left. If it stays up, you have enough pressure to operate the breaks at least. If the flag will not stay up, not enough pressure to drive the truck. If it drops in front of your face while you are driving, pull over and stop immediately because you are losing all of your air.

    Riley, remember the truck fire out on the highway a while back? If you and your dad think you will be ok to let this KW truck stand with a load of water on it, then don't let too much time pass before you fix it up to use as a makeshift fire truck. There are lots of things around the ranch that can catch fire and your local fire department is a long distance away. Get some fire hose of both 1.5 inch and 1inch diameter and fog (spray) nozzles for both. The red plastic ones are just fine for starters. Then make sure you have the proper connectors to hook the hoses to the pump. Then practice hooking them up and using them. Your local fire department might help you to find those things, and make other suggestions.
    Rig a place to keep those and other tools ON THE TRUCK. Always keep those things ON THE TRUCK! Don't ever "borrow" them to do anything else somewhere or sure as shootin' they won't be there when there is a fire!
    Good luck.

    Because of the prior use of this truck as a support vehicle for a crop-dusting operation, make sure the "water" tank does not contain any residual deadly chemicals. Also for a truck this age, and unless you are sure of any recent engine and transmission service, the engine and transmission oil should be drained and replaced with new and appropriate oils. All the oil filters and air filters should be replaced. Also the radiator should be drained and the water, with the appropriate amount of antifreeze should be replaced. Doing just a little tweaking and maintenance should make this this truck a good water truck for quite a few years. PS: Don't forget to service the Honda pump engine, it will also need an oil change with new filters for the oil and air intake. This gives you another great opportunity to have Riley help you and get more good instructions and experience.

    Yrs ago I drove a truck with 2 transmissions. The gear shift with reverse is the main transmission. The other gear shift is the spitter. Ram that transmission is the mechanical version or a 13 speed, 15 speed. I think emergency shut off is to stop a run away engine before it blows up. Detroit diesel use to have them. It took a mechanic to set it back rite.

    that stop haning in the winshield is when you get enough air ,you life it up and it stays. when you run low on air ,it drops down and the brakes lock up. this old school man. i,m 86 years old and I drove these. brings back some long time memories. that transmission is a 4 and three. you will find out when you drive it enough that there is a lot of shifting . on the 3 gear ,,, you shift the main 3 time s,then go to 2nd and startall over. it will take some time to get it,but it works good.

    You also use that compression handle when it is cold weather. You pull the handle and get the engine spinning over real fast then push the compression release valve in and engine will start quicker. I think your engine is most likely a 262 Cummins. Might be a 250 also.

  • @NusaCat
    @NusaCat Год назад +3

    Truck tractor protection valve is to shut off trailer air in the event of a hose failure so the tractor doesn't lose air. Emergency means only the tractor gets air. Totally manual on a rig this old, it won't happen automatically. Also may be irrelevant to your configuration, unless there's air fittings back there for a towed trailer. 1957 is the year I was born, incidentally.

  • @henrymichaelwilson8107
    @henrymichaelwilson8107 Год назад +3

    Has it got a fuel pump on the engine. If so the stop cable will be on it. It may have a decompresser valve on the top of the engine. That's a shaft that runs through the rocker cover. It's just for cold starting. So don't worry about that.

    The engine in the truck is most likely an NTO 220. The lever with the pull cable in the cab that you thought is the kill is actually a compression release for cold starting. Pull it get the engine spinning and push it back in. As far as shut down it's a electric solenoid top of the fuel pump. If it doesn't shut off with the key the manual override screw is most likely turned in.

    The shut off valve must be a compression release...the tractor protection valve is just the trailer air..back then there was only spring brakes on one drive axle & none on the trailers...no steer axle brakes either...the air tank on the trailer would apply brakes to the trailer if the supply line was interrupted, or broke & that valve would pop off to the emergency position & keep the tractor from loosing air as well....as long as the trailer was disconnected and the air tank would hold air, the trailer brakes would remain engaged, as the air bled off...usually a day or two...then the trailer wheels would free roll...

    The handle on the left is a compression release it's for starting the truck the worning is don't run the truck with the valves open the Handel on the right is for closing or opening the damper on the radiator. The stop sign above the steering wheel should lift out of the way when you get enough air pressure . You will also need to check but I'm guessing it will be a positive ground a little tricky when jump starting. This was the truck that I leaned how to drive if you have any other questions please feel free to reach out keep up the good work with your boys .

    Shutdown valve is the engine kill valve that is the “t” handle left of the steering wheel. It must be left in the kill “pulled” position when the engine is not running. This cuts off the fuel. If left on in the “pushed” it can allow fuel to flood the engine.
    If you pull the shutdown and push it back in before the engine stops running it can cause issues with extra fuel and then cause the engine to miss fire.

    From first look/impression that thing is in fantastic shape, someone treated her pretty gentle thru the years. With that wiggle waggle air warning bar you are probably gonna want to chock the tires when it’s parked (I couldn’t see any parking brake cans on the brakes)

    Your son may as well be the first to drive it. Cause he’s probably gonna be the one hauling the water to the cows.

    The cable pull to the front of the engine is called a compression release and is used to kill the motor on the old Cummins engines. It can also be used as an assist to start by pulling out while cranking the engine and then releasing it. Also on the old KW's and Pete's with the butterfly hoods there's a bracket on the top corner of the radiator to set the corner of the hood into to hold it open. I drove one similar eons ago. Have fun!

      Hi David, yup, it's a compression release, but you never used it to shut the engine down. My dad would smack me upside the head if I ever did that lol..

    What a gem of a find! Score!
    That old truck brings back a lot of memories. I restored a 1948 KW and it was repowered with the same engine. 743 C.I., NT-6 Cummins, it should have the exact model on the tag by the fuel pump. It was one of the first turbo charged Cummins engines, but they really didn't add much HP's.
    On the left side of the dash, that's a compression release, used to start the engine on cold mornings. It is NOT the engine shut down valve! It opens the exhaust valves so it can freely turn over without any compression. Don't pull it when it's running! I doubt you'll be needing to use it in sunny CA!
    The red thing dangling in the drivers windshield is called a Wig-Wag. It was used as a warning for low air pressure. You should just be able to flip it out of the way once you have around 60 PSI.
    The old Cummins had one wire to the fuel pump solenoid. Key on opens the solenoid to let it run, and key off closes the solenoid to shut it off. Not sure what the shut off valve is about but it's not for that engine. It might have had the engine replaced, which wouldn't surprise me considering how old she is. Detroit Diesels were the only engines from that era that had a shut-off valve, probably that one dangling from the dash by the parking brake valve.
    Dang. I'm old...
    So happy to see you with your family learning about the old iron and raising your boys right. God Bless!
    Edited to add that those hood hinges probably just need a good squirt of PB blaster or WD40 to loosen them up.

      I'm a bit of a youngster (19) and grew up loving and driving these old trucks. I've used a compression release like that before, but never actually thought to pull it when it was running. What exactly would it do? Fill your cylinders with unburnt fuel? Would love to know the answer. (Not to mention your restored KW!)

    • @outintheboondocks1466
      @outintheboondocks1466 10 месяцев назад +1

      @@macoyreiber4482 The simple answer is the exhaust push rods have a metal disk on them, and when you pull the compression release they hold the exhaust valves open until you get the engine turning over fast enough. Then you release the compression release and, hopefully, it starts. If you pull on it while it's running, you can seriously damage the exhaust push rods!
      As for my old 48, I bought it when I was 19 and spent the next 7 years restoring it. It brought my dad and I closer together and helped me avoid the traps of partying and all that stuff. Sadly, it was stolen a few years later. To say I was pretty pissed off is a huge understatement! But I realized that the only person I was hurting by carrying around anger and bitterness was me. I just retired from trucking after 42 years and now I hope to play with them. Looking for a Marmon now.... hahaha

      @@outintheboondocks1466 interesting, so how different does the compression release work from a Jake brake? I understand a Jake works by opening the exhaust valves just before tdc. What separates the two?
      Too bad about the KW. Some people in this world are downright despicable! I'm currently eyeing a 1954 with a 220 Cummins on FB marketplace, trying real hard to talk myself out of it. Good luck finding a Marmon, I've always liked them but they can be a bit difficult to track down!

      @outintheboondocks1466 10 месяцев назад +1

      @@macoyreiber4482 Jakes use a special head on top of the heads. It uses an electric solenoid to trick the timing of the valves. At least that’s how the old ones work.
      As for buying your dream truck, be prepared to spend a lot of time and money!

    Auxiliary transmission on the right is labeled wrong=no low, med,high. They are 3 small step gears to be shifted within each of the 4 main trans gears.

  • @bobwilliams3502
    @bobwilliams3502 Год назад

    OK let’s start from the top that flag in front of the driver windshield drops down when there’s low air pressure you should be able push it left or right with your finger until it seats. The gearshift closest to the driver is the main transmission and the one farthest from the driver is there auxiliary, even if the auxiliary is in gear as long as the main is the neutral, you’re fine. The engine shut off was exactly what you figured out, the old Macs were the same way. The tractor protection valve would be if you didn’t have a tank on, and you were pulling a trailer with the truck, and somehow the trailer on hitch from the truck it would put the brakes on. Been watching your channel for a while. Love every episode happy motoring.

    That cable and lever your boy was pulling on under the hood doesn't shut of the fuel , it's a compression release you pull when starting . It opens the exhaust valves to ease start up , especially when cranking cold . Pull before pushing the starter button and keep it pulled for about 3-5 secs. while cranking and then release. The eng should start unlees it's relly cold . And I've never seen a shut down valve on a Cummins , the fuel shut off valve is on fuel pump and closes when you turn the key off . Old detroit 2 strokes have an emergency shut down . Have fun 👍
