That's probably why they chose that reel to test, tbh. Modern reels use carbon-fibre washers that actually decrease in friction as they heat up, meaning they wouldn't get as hot as the reels with asbestos washers do.
Since it's non-friable, lubricated, and enclosed in a housing, it's considered a "low-risk" form of asbestos, but obviously not zero risk. As of 2024, they're still technically legal to buy and sell in the US, but the EPA has proposed, but not yet enacted, a ban on their sale and manufacture. Canada, the UK, the EU and most other wealthy countries have banned them for a while.

I read a book about an outback preacher which told short stories of some of the things that happened to him or that he saw while travelling around Western Australia and the Northern Territory. One time while he was travelling to the church at Coober Pedy he got two flat tyres, put on the spare and some passing Aborigines (they were on foot) managed to fill the other tyre with enough spear grass and yakka bush to make it work, these two types of grass are fairly thick and long so may have been better than straw as they wouldn't have fallen out as easily but it got the preacher and the Aborigines into town. He also came across some young locals once cooking the car battery on a fire to rejuvinate it enough to get the car going again, it apparently worked.

21:25 They should have done 1 last test with the Monofilament as a control to rule out any accumulating effects of usage on the reel.
Because the way it looks now, the heat build-up keeps on increasing with each test.
Meaning it could be that the core of the reel had some residual heat from the tests before, which made it easier to heat up. Or it could be that the oil used to lubricate the mechanical parts isn't performing as well as on the first test. Etc. Doing 1 test for each option was a poor choice. Ideally they would have tested them all a couple of times in different orders for their test results to be statistically significant.

It makes sense to have a backup gokart, they are relatively common (assuming they borrowed them from a team they likely would have a backup kart on hand) and it means if something goes wrong mechanically with the first one, they can switch it out without interrupting filming.

I've seen a reel catch fire. It was an old one with a fair amount of internal corrosion, the owner in an effort to clean it had used petrol to degrease it and was spraying WD-40 to overcome a sticking clutch. The ignition source was not a nice Tope or delicious conger, it was a careless cigarette. Odds are some petrol was still trapped in the WD-40 after he'd rebuilt it, it sparked nicely. The line went up and the entire reel was a loss. Fortunately we were using tethers, rod went overboard and was hauled back. Total losses were £280 reel and some dignity, total saved was a £150 rod.

Sidecars are generally 600cc Supersport engines - none of them producing anything like the horsepower for 200mph, no matter what the gearing.

@@thompsoni7251 Thank you for putting me right on this.
Having seen your response I looked at the capacity change, and when the episode was aired - 2009.
The Kawasaki ZX-10R was putting out 185bhp in stock, with a 186mph limiter.
Apparently the ZX-10R responded very well to tuning, and could easily surpass 200bhp in Superstock trim.
I couldn't see any information on Superbike or Sidecar trim, but I can now appreciate that 200mph isn't out of the question.
I used the Kawasaki ZX-10R because it seemed like a reasonable benchmark that would be popular with Sidecar builders - I can't imagine there would be any significant differences between the other manufacturers.

47:12 there is clearly a flicker of flame on the reel when they say no ignition... Someone should test this using heavier line so more drag can be applied without breaking so lower speeds make more heat. I have had a big ray empty a reel like that running off with my shark bait before and it was only like a 300kg fish not a even a monster 1000kg+ shark. As much drag as you can hold there is a fish to pull it.
