    How most people discover Band Maid First:
    -There is that recommendation for Band Maid again. Those girls in the thumbnail look cute.... I guess I'll click it but the music probably sucks.
    -10 seconds later - Are they wearing maid outfits? Holy shit, listen to this music! What is going on!? First video ends - That was so good. What else is there?
    -1 hour later - I watched all the official videos. Is there more? searches and finds the unofficial live videos
    -Five hours later - This is one of the best bands I've ever heard. I need more. starts watching interviews and cute moments videos.
    -Ten hours later: Buying all the albums and live Blurays
    -4 months later - fanboying at the first Band Maid concert available to go to
    That´s it, Congrats from Brazil.

    This is the tip of the iceberg and this is nowhere near their best song. Q. What’s your favourite BAND-MAID song? A. The last one I listened to. Any live track is amazing. You ain’t seen nothing yet. Don’t even bother with the lyrics as Japanese sometime translates very poorly, however it is a mixture of Japanese and English. There is a song off their latest album “Conqueror” which is HEAVY called RINNE (Reincarnation) but there’s no live performance yet due to the virus. There is a music video though, but you should try “Don’t you tell ME” for the battle in the middle. ruclips.net/video/foqErbEw05o/видео.html

    Moratorium live!! Damn it's hard to choose just one!!
    Like you I've listened to rock and metal all my life and grew up on 70s and 80s rock. They do sound familiar cos they bring together a lot of influences.
    I saw these ladies live in London in 2018 and became instantly hooked. Two hours of total feel-good rock (and if there was ever a time to listen to music with a positive vibe, it's now). They write and arrange all their own music and have real chemistry when they play together. They regularly tour the US and Europe and have a hell of a following. They were due to play Inkcarceration Festival this year but it's been cancelled.
    If lyrics are a huge problem you can't get over then I guess they'll never be much more than a 6 for you but that's ok. imho the music and charisma shines through, they are a 10 all the way for me.

    Great reaction to what I consider the best hard rock band in the world today. Five Japanese ladies that will change the way you listen to rock. You mentioned they sound familiar, that's because they have distilled the best of rock and concocted a new sound that is just fresh, fun and unbelievable good They have a huge catalog of songs and the best ones are live. I've been listening to rock since the mid-50's and these highly talented ladies deliver the best rock today hands down.

    If you want to hear a purely instrumental song, then "Onset" is probably the safest choice. :-) And it is really good. Each of them gets a moment. It is hard hard rock. And there are synths present.
    In case, you would like to her another female switcher of clean/harsh vocals´ variety, if yes, then Vintersea - Skies Set Ablaze (official music video) --- it is heavier than Ignea as it gravitates more towards melodic death metal. Her name is Avienne. Have a great day.

      @@ollytherock7324 Personally it's one called "Don't Let Me Down", but I know that wouldn't be on most peoples' lists. If you are more of a metal guy, maybe something like Moratorium would be more to your taste. ruclips.net/video/N7BQCkUb4SI/видео.html Some nice heavy bass is this one too.
      There is fair amount of English in most of their songs, but people miss most of it. That's partly because the lead singer's English isn't great, but also because your brain tunes out, especially when the English forms the 2nd half of a line, as theirs often does. For example, this is the chorus to the song you just heard...
      You say No No No
      なんて It's not a joke
      I wanna believe that
      誰が解んだよ?
      だから keep running
      もっと keep running

      叫べ follow me up
      握る 最大値求め
      未知なる場所へ 未知なる物へ
      Hello Hello Hello Hello
      Overall though, they aren't a heavy metal band. They are a heavy rock band, and many of their songs feature a wall of sound with a catchy chorus.

Try Moratorium, Puzzle, Dice, (live) then you have about 70 more. Baby Metal is an act put together by a production company, all the songs are composed, produced all the musicians are chosen to create a show. It’s fun to watch but I would give my soul to see Band Maid live the talent and love of rock/metal shows. They're Japanese but their popularity is growing faster in the rest of the world than it is in Japan.
    Band founder Miku (the cute one with pigtails) was briefly in an idol band, and while working in a maid cafe came up with the idea of creating a hard rock band which contrasted a feminine, submissive image with aggressive music. She found lead guitarist Kanami on RUclips, Kanami suggested Akane (who she'd played with previously) as their drummer and Akane brought in MISA on bass (they went to the same music school). Miku originally did all the vocal work but they added Saiki to beef up the sound after auditioning singers.
    These are just a few of my favourites and the selection by no means exhausts their catalogue of great music!

    Miku Kobato (Kobato. Her real name may be Mika Noguchi. 'Kobato' means 'little pigeon' and is definitely a stage name) - rhythm guitar, vocals, main lyricist, band founder
    MISA - bass (stage name, her real names are unknown)
    Akane Hirose (A-chan, Achi) - drums
    Except where otherwise noted the personal names of the band are likely to be their genuine given names, but their family names are probably adopted for the stage: the Japanese value their privacy.

    I strongly disagree about the importance of the lyrics. While good lyrics does add to a song, it's not compulsory. I believe the main purpose of music is to invoke emotions, and it can be achieved entirely by sound alone. For example, Santana can put you to tears without a single word said. Some songs just work better without lyrics. When listening to foreign songs, unless it has amazing lyrics that the author specifically want the listener to understand, I don't care. The sound is all I listen for, and Band-Maid's sound is one of the best. The emotion they invoke is "FUN"; the joy of music embodied in their sound.

    The singer (Saiki) was ON FIRE in this one. All of their songs are this good. There are NO bad songs. You'll read and hear this from every Band-Maid fan, there just aren't any bad songs. I listen to whole albums at a time.
    There are only two all English songs. Don't worry about it, they slip enough English in to all their songs that makes it accessible. If you insist on doing one of them, do Dragon Cries. The other one I am unsure they knew or not what exactly they were singing. Or, if they did, the cultural difference creates a disconnect (It's dirty AF).

    Misa, Misa, Misa. You cannot go wrong with ANY live recording. They're like Nightwish, it's all good or great. The Zep Tokyo performances are better sound quality. Some of the songs do have the lyrics on the internet and one thing to keep in mind is that even when they sing in English the accents are very thick. I think (respectully) your rating system is flawed. Listen to ONSET live if you're worried about lyrics, it's an instrumental: ruclips.net/video/roP4HFlGBUI/видео.html This band does rock with punk and pop elements in it. You may be a little hung up on the symphonic metal comparisons because of your love for that genre (I really like it too) but I think comparing Band Maid to that is like apples and oranges. Band Maid does seem familiar at times because it has a lot of that retro-rock feel to the music. Personally speaking I feel like they're bringing back the genre. There are a number of really good bands coming out of Japan but Band Maid is, I confess, my favorite.

    It's pretty common for Japanese bands to use English in refrains. It's a bit hard for me to judge Japanese lyrics, since I don't speak the language. Japanese is notorious for not translating well. Their sentence structure is totally different than European languages and words often don't straight up translate.

    Olly, sorry, usually you are spot on with your comments on music, but I think that you cant be further away from truth saying BandMaid has anything to do with symphonic metal. Its a great hard-rock (partially heavy metal) band with that guns-n-roses sound thickness. I might be wrong but you seem to be a kinda been "pushed" to start listening to a japanese all female band and by "pushed" i think its the amount of requests to do so. And I dont think it felt natural for you to go down with this review. I am a huuuuuge fan of BandMaid same as I am huuuuuuge fan of Nightwish. And i see no connections between these formations. So I feel kind of sorry for you to start your BandMaid journey not on your own will but by the pressure of demands. Well, I just hope one day you will discover how super-dooper cool these girls are and you will not wait for a request to review them.Until then you might not get the Joy you could have had listening to these 5 crazy talented people.

    Good review Olly. Like drumming. Akane does a fabulous solo on Freedom live in Shibuya on Feb 14 this year. Hey treading on a hot tin roof rating them on 1 song. Guaranteed to upset the ultra loyal fans. Unfortunately,the Japanese don’t have a very good English education system. Taught basic writing but not speaking (less than 1% including millennials which is rare these days). The Japanese lyrics doesn’t translate well at times. Misa on bass and Kanami are the stars in the shows as you see here. Kanami is a prodigy who composes most of the music.
    Played in LA,New York and Dallas last year to rave reviews. London and Germany too. The Maids play as well live as any band. Better than the studio versions. Miku on rhythm knows how to work the crowd even with limited English. Have a niche following now but with better English in lyrics and concerts combined with touring,the band will gain a greater following. The ladies talent is superb and they deserve to have the success of Baby Metal (so much better).

    Here's the thing about Band-Maid (oh, and yes they sing mostly in Japanese with some English thrown in her and there.)
    First, are they talented? Are they unique in that they are an all female band? Do they write good songs?
    The answer to all that questions is a resounding yes. (And yes, their lyrics are pretty damn good as well ... They have a couple of 'anthem' songs, more written to allow the crowd sing along, but the vast majority of their songs, which is upwards of 90 now, and all finally crafted masterpieces.)
    Like I've already pointed out, they are talented and write good music and songs, but another important aspect of the ban is that they are very fan friendly ... By that I mean I can think of no other bands except maybe The Beatles where the band members personalities played such an important part in their appeal to their fans ... Once you get even a little bit into the band you will learn about the band members on stage and of stage personas, which will make you love them even more.

      One of the reasons i listed as some parts to Symphonic metal is in the heavy guitar sound. In the Musical genre definition gives us a look at that , "Symphonic metal is a subgenre of heavy metal music that combines the heavy drums and guitars of metal with different elements of orchestral classical music, such as symphonic instruments, choirs and sometimes a full orchestra. Keyboards reminiscent of power metal are also sometimes featured." I feel that the guitar has that heavy metal sound, but at the same time very hard rock.
      I agree with you that its a damn good arrangement. Thank you for a great comment.

    They broke unto the scene from a MV called Thrill ~ 6 yrs ago. It since has had 12 million views. They did not write this song but some people have said that Miku helped with some of the lyrics. Miku is the rhythm guitarist and backup singer and the founder of the Band. As said elsewhere in the comments she did have some connections due to her being in a Pop band that did not make it. After they played together for a little while she and the band recognised she didn't have the chops for rock and they found Saiki. Not sure who in the band or if they all collectively told Miku she had to learn to play guitar. So she took on the challenge and Kanami became her music instructor. 7 yrs later she is a pretty good rhythm player while learning in front of us on the stage. Kanami writes the music and Miku the lyrics but all the members have a say once it is brought to the band. This is what I have seen written about how their music comes to life.
    I have no doubt once you give these women a good listen you will realize how good they are. Jimmy Page saw them and was impressed and met them after the show. He was so impressed with Arkani, the drummer, he allowed a photo of them two to be taken. So if Mr Rock and Roll himself was impressed, that should indicate a little of how good the musicianship this band has.

    Now you have to watch it again because they've added the lyrics to this official video. And the lyrics are very, very good, in that good translation. Obviously, the Japanese lyrics are quite complicated, and the advantage of the official channel is that you can always consult the author and ask her what she meant.

    • @neilcam
      @neilcam Год назад +1

      I'd say the translation is okay, but still not as poetic as they are in Japanese and don't scan as well as they should. (And my sincere apologies to our beloved translator, you do a great job despite my criticism.)

    • @VladimirChupin
      @VladimirChupin Год назад

      @@neilcam Poetry is not translatable, in general. Although in this particular case, with Simon R. Wallis, I think he's doing translations together with Miku, they are noticeably better than even the best of the unofficial ones. I think Miku discusses the intended meaning of the lyrics with him, and then he explains it in English.
      Although we have no way of knowing it exactly, what's happening behind the scenes there.

      @@VladimirChupin I wouldn't say poetry is not translatable in general as there have been some truly wonderful translations of many classics over the years. • @VladimirChupin
      @VladimirChupin Год назад

      @@neilcam Well, I should say that indeed, I saw a few examples of translated poetry which was very close to the original. But whenever an author uses some deep cultural references, or a by-word, or a proverb, what should the translator do? Only to re-compose it in the target language, trying to keep at least some of the original meaning...
      And most of the Kobato's poetry is like this. Very... mmm... poetic 😂

    • @neilcam
      @neilcam Год назад +1

      @@VladimirChupin That's an interesting question indeed. I always tend to think when I read a translated book, poetry, or play (that reads well) that the translator basically becomes a co-author. Best example would be various translations of Chekhov's works (No, not Star Trek Chekhov) by various translators - some are brilliant, some less so. So my answer would be the classic cop-out of 'a bit of both'. 🤣
      And I get that our favourite flappy pigeon's lyrics are very poetic - that's clear from how well they fit and scan in the songs. (I should note that I don't speak Japanese.) Also she's made it clear before that she will coin words or use an impressionistic/out-of-place/English word just to help maintain the lyrical flow.
      With all that in mind, I wouldn't have any issue at all with Simon adjusting so that the translation scans/flows a little better at times. HOWEVER, it's most definitely not up to me! Honestly, I really am appreciative of the work he does and that we get the translations we do.
