This phenomenal band has been part of the (hard-)rock circuit for more than 10 years now - and they have never ever disappointed. Not just that: they are still getting better, better and better. Band-Maid = excellent musicianship, brilliant songbook, awesome live performances and five great human beings. It's for everyone to admit: these ladies have invigorated and further developed the genre in many ways. What a magic ride this is!

    Maidiacs Incoming! 🎉 🤘🏽
Dedicated following? They call us “Maidiacs” for a reason
Lots of live videos? ✅ Band Maid is one of the rare artists who consistently outperform their studio takes, despite them being stellar to begin with. They sincerely love the fans, and they adore each other. It shows.
What are their best ones. 😂 Put it this way: I’m an old blues rock musician and music nerd who grew up on everything from Barry Manilow to Black Sabbath. These Maids have over 120 songs over a 10 year period. In my opinion? At least 40-50 are solid, legitimate hits. Insane.
Here are my current top 3:
    “Puzzle,” official live
“From Now On,” OMV (heavy metal instrumental)
    “DICE,” OMV, prog/hard rock
    Enjoy the ride 🚀

BM is a live band and they shine brightest on stage. This band has been around for 10 years and has a huge catalogue of songs. What is astonishing is that none of them are bad and not many bands I know can match that. Their music is based on hard rock. It is spiced up with punk, grunge and prog. You can't really put a label on their music because they like to mix styles. In the end it's just a damn good song. I have some favourites: YOLO, Take me Higher!!, Shake That, Choose me, Alone (Akane has a magical solo) and if you want to listen to Miku (the one with the red rose) sing, I recommend Rock in Me or Time.

Hi Axeman welcome to Band-Maid! The best hard rock band I have heard in my 57 years on this planet. They don't stick to any one genre and often mix genres in songs. They are extremely diverse and have an extensive 10 year back catalogue featuring Punk, Pop-Punk, Hard-Rock, Classic Rock, Metal, Prog, Blues, Jazz, Groove, Rap etc. From face melting 220 bpm punk-prog to ballads, instrumentals to acoustics they do it all. They are also five of the nicest people in music, without a shred of ego. They are funny and fun and bad-ass musicians to boot. They are currently celebrating their 10th anniversary with the original line up. I went to Japan (from UK) last month to see them live, I caught four shows and they blew the roof off every time! They play 2 hour sets with that energy too!
Yeah the mix of Japanese and English is a standard for Band-Maid. They have fans all over the world so mix both languages. Many other Japanese bands do too. Also, Miku the main lyricist has two languages to choose words from that fit the melody with what she wants to say. Plus you will hear English phrases in everyday Japanese conversation, it is seen as 'cool'.
    Other great live MV's are
    "Real Existence"
    "Play"
    "Puzzle"
    "Freedom"
    "No God"
"Manners" & "Black Hole" (two songs EXTREMELY different that showcase their range)
Best wishes, see you soon. Subscribed.

There is some recent officially released live footage from festivals in the US- Aftershock and Lollapalooza as well as regular official music videos- Blooming, Choose Me, Unleash and Sense. Members are- Miku- Red Rose/Band founder/Most Lyrics/Second vocals and guitar. Saiki- Blue Rose/Lead vocals/Some lyrics, Kanami- Main Composer/Lead Guitar/backing Vocals. Misa- Bass- that bass?/Some composing. Akane- Drums. With Misa, the best rhythm section around right now.

In my opinion Band-Maid is the best hard rock band out there today and can hold their own with the best classic rock/metal bands of all time. They excel as musicians, songwriters, arrangers, and performers (they are also humble, down to earth, and charismatic). They can simply do it all. I'd recommend Dice/Hate (two songs) from Lollapalooza 2023 (A truly live performance that went viral for them and introduced them to a lot of new fans).

The band calls the contrast between their cutesy maid costumes and their hard rock sound "the gap". They enjoy seeing the confused looks on people's faces when they walk on stage and the reaction when they start playing with their hard rock sound.
My opinion is that Band-Maid are one of the best bands to have formed in the past 10 years, and are currently one of the best rock and roll bands on the planet. They play many genres including ballads, power ballads, pop, rock, progressive rock, hard rock, punk, metal, nu metal, and everything before in-between and beyond. They also have several great instrumental songs that they use live to give their lead singer Saiki a break. I don't know what musical style that you prefer but you can't go wrong by listening to Onset, From Now On, Moratorium, No God, Rinne, About Us, Play, Why Why Why, and my favorite Official Music Video of theirs Don't You Tell Me. The double bass kick drum on No God and Rinne will blow your mind. Have fun with it!
    Introducing The Band...
Miku [mee-kuu] (Small Pigeon) - Rhythm Guitar, Vocals, Lyricist, Band Founder
Misa [mee-suh] (Barefoot Assassin) - Bass Guitar
    Akane [aah-kah-nay] (Gorilla) - Drums

This was their last performance before covid shut down their touring in February 2020. Japan had pretty severe restrictions, so they were limited to online streaming until mid-2022. They did a set on the Coinbase stage at Lollapalooza last August 4th - the first Japanese band in a decade - and there's an excerpt (non-official) titled something like "BAND-MAID - Dice & Hate? at Lollapalooza 2023." You'll have to forgive the camerawork that couldn't find the right player in a target-rich environment, lol, but the sound is excellent and you'll get a more current performance.

It's good to hear that you're mainly interested in live music, because reactors are often told to "listen to any of Band-Maid's official live videos, it doesn't matter which one". They draw from most major genres in their music, so there will probably be songs you don't like as much based on personal taste, but the compositions and performance levels are consistently excellent.
On your question about freely switching between Japanese and English, yes this is common in Japan, including in music that is only aimed at the domestic market. Band-Maid do it more than most bands though.
By the way, Band-Maid are my favourite but they are the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the Japanese rock and metal scene. For example, Lovebites, Nemophila and Wagakki Band all have sizeable and dedicated fan-bases. I'd also strongly recommend Sokoninaru, Asterism and Gacharic Spin - they might not get you quite as many views, but they do all have some passionate fans.

Welcome & thanks from Japan 有難う💛。 Band-Maid is one of the best bands in our country, especially in live performance. We say "Japan is the country obsessed by Rock Music". The history is very long and the obsession started in 1966 when Beatles visited Japan and held 5 concerts at Budokan. Speaking of hard rock / heavy metal music, a number of bands started to come to Japan since as early as 1970s : Led Zeppelin / Grand Funk Railroad (1971), Deep Purple (1972), Queen (1975), Kiss (1977), Cheap Trick / Van Halen / Scorpions (1978), Judas Priest (1978/79) and so on. Now, any type of rock can be enjoyed here, especially by many all-female or women-fronted bands. They are daughters of American / European rock, for sure. (Many are grand-daughters in terms of age.)
Uh-oh, we also say "Japan is the country obsessed by Jazz". It had started earlier than rock 😄

Band Maid really has a large number of really great songs... many of them here on RUclips as videos. Luckily for you, there are also plenty of official live videos included. But the MVs are also worth it if live video in good audio quality is not available.
However, some of the live videos are not in front of an audience (e.g. because of Corona), but are single takes with a really good live character.
I recommend the following live videos: 🎶🎶🎶
Freedom (look closely how much fun they have)
    Play
    Onset
    Manners/Blackhole (online OKYUJI)
    Why Why Why (online OKYUJI)
    Real Existence
    Sayonakidory Accoustic
    Dice/Difference (online OKYUJI)
    ... any many many more
By the way, Band Maid call their live performances “OKYUJI” (Servings) and their audience “Masters and princesses”. All of this comes from the "maid cafes" in Japan and not only that ... but that's another story :-)
So, here are the four maids (and Miku is mentioned first for a reason (she is the founder and their energy source )
🎸🎤✍ MI-KU: rhythm guitar and secondary vocals, most of the lyrics (our little pidgeon)
    🥁A-KA-NE: Drums (the gorilla 🍌🦍)
🎸✍ KA-NA-MI: Lead guitar, composer of nearly 100% of their songs of the last 4 years
🎸MI-SA Misa Misa (the barefoot assassin) : Bass
    🎤 SA-I-KI: Lead vocals
There are also some really great documentaries from Ohrenje...

The songs are connected together with some very tasty guitar and bass licks and weaving of solos. I doubt very much you will be disappointed. Again, thank you for reacting to BAND-MAID. p.s. Yes, this band has a very loyal, worldwide following.

  • @BillHallisey

Axeman, I suggest your next reaction to Band Maid to be for "Shambles", their most recent official release. The official music video really show how far they have come since the "Domination'" performance in Shiboyu several years ago. Now, if you really want to have some fun, you should react to the "Dice/Hate?" two-song clip from their one-hour showcase at the Lollapalooza music festival this summer in Chicago. The clip has gone VIRAL on RUclips and the internet. Don't worry, Band Maid does not block their videos on RUclips. During Dice, there are solos from Misa, the bassist, and from Kanami, the lead guitarist. During the interlude between the two songs, Akane, their drummer, kept pounding her drum kit, leading seamlessly into "Hate?". During "Hate?", there is an EPIC call and respond "converstion/duel" between Misa and Kanami. The band members all loved it, the audience went wild, and RUclips viewers loved it. That's why it went viral on the internet. I feel you will love a recent live performance video of the band.

Any official live version is great; some were recorded during lockdown when they were doing live streamed concerts and have no audience in the room. These are generally two songs in one on their channel (to benefit from a Japanese incentive to release videos to entertain people who were stuck inside, they had to put two songs into the same videos to meet video length requirements). There are some recordings from Lollapalooza which are not "official live videos" out there, they can also be worth checking out. I'd recommend checking out Puzzle official live video next, for a starting point, but I don't think they have any bad songs.

Quite simply, THE best band on Earth. I've been enjoying Rockin' and Metallin' since the mid 70's, when I saw the likes of Sabbath, Purple, Zeppelin and Zappa and many others, but I haven't looked away from Japan since 2016. It's where all the best Metal and Rock are being made and it is all Japanese and female/female-led. Band-Maid have been my favourites since 2016 but try Lovebites, Nemophila or Asterism for similar musicianship levels, although there are many others too. Always best live. 🤘 At 3:23 - MISA, the bassist, Kanami the lead guitarist and composer, and Miku the rhythm guitarist and founder of the band, are playing Hengao - "strange faces" - with Akane the drummer, which is making funny faces to try and put someone off. Akane, of course, laughs along while not missing a beat. It shows the ladies' confidence in each others' abilities that they can fool around like this while all of them slam out note-perfect Rock at full tilt. At 4:41 - MISA the bassist is holding her plectrum in her curled finger so she can produce it and switch from slapping to picking in half a nanosecond! At 5:26 - Akane the drummer hitting two separate beats on her double kick pedals while simultaneously continuing the song melody on her snare, toms and cymbal. At 6:30 - a brief glimpse of Kanami laying down one sweet rolling chord pattern on her PRS (she's their poster girl and they sponsor her) - pure class. THE best live Rock band on Earth. And beyond.

  • @GlennWH26
    @GlennWH26 11 месяцев назад +3

Okay, names, pronunciation, nicknames, and roles, in order that they joined the band.
Miku Kobato - mee-koo - Kuruppo, the Little Pigeon, the Little Engine Who Will - band founder, backing (and occasionally lead) vocals, rhythm guitar, principal lyricist, tireless Spokespigeon and PR machine. Wielder of weapons grade cuteness. So determined to see her band succeed that she fired herself as lead singer (she decided her voice wasn't strong enough for hard rock), then went looking for a replacement. Learned to play guitar after the band was formed.
Kanami Tono - kah-nah-mee - Kanamincho or just Mincho - lead guitar, keyboards, principal composer and arranger. On stage, she's a savant mad riffer with a room temperature IQ and a huge crush on Saiki. In reality, she's a genius, and not just musically- she has a degree in economics with honors from Tokyo University.
Akane Hirose - ah-kah-neh - A-chan, the Gorilla - drums, sequencing, snacks, the leader the band doesn't have. What you see is what you get- a cheerful jock with a huge appetite who burns off the calories murdering her drums. Frequently snacks between songs.
MISA - mee-sah - the Barefoot Assassin, MISA MISA MISA! - bass, booze, occasional wet work. Usually stone faced. Barely acknowledges the audience's existence. Always has a beer or a bottle of Jim Beam on her Orange amp. Originally, these were ways of coping with stage fright. These days, that's just how the assassin rolls.
Saiki Atsumi - sah-ee-kee (but Psyche is close enough) - the Ice Queen, Sensei, Sai-chan - lead vocals, some lyrics, the "We're done" girl. Fashionista and train nerd. In total command on stage; hides behind Miku off stage (she's actually kind of shy).

Miku will purposely mix in English words and phrases. Especially when an English phrase just fits the song better or to get the crowd to sing along. Check out Miku singing SAYONAKIDORI ! There are many versions, including an acoustic one from the legendary Christmas Day, online acoustic concert from 2 years ago. If Misa playing bass is your pleasure, check out I STILL SEEK REVENGE ! Close your eyes and pick . You can't go wrong !

This show has several great live videos. Play Live which was the song right before this and a really fun song, Freedom Live (very old school hard rock), Choose Me Live (Pop punk gold but musically more complex than 99% of Pop punk) and Wonderland (mid tempo jazzy number).

Oh, wow, thanks for the shout-out! I never expected it, and am deeply honored.
There are some really good suggestions below already, but my personal recommendations would be for any of these, that i didn't see in m quick scan:
Freedom (Official Live) .... from the same show as this one
Manners .... official MV (this is one of the few cases where I prefer the MV. I'm not saying it's "better", but just that I like it more)
Thrill ... official MV (this was their first break-out. They've cine a LONG way since, and even further since this show, but a look back at the beginning can be informative).
You've already attracted the attention of the Maidiacs, you'll never lack for suggestions. Take as many as you have time for.

Thank you for your reaction. Japanese artists and bands frequently mix Japanese and English to various degree. I have seen some comments that BM use English words for their fans in foreign countries and I have no reason to doubt that but I’m also quite sure that for a number of artists it is an artistic choice using words from another language. Probably because it sounds different. Not as frequent but there is an example of German being included by an artists. Puzzle official live video is great to react to. Have fun!

You're probably the first person to instantly have that mindset. I've tried to get countless other reactors to react to more Band-Maid because more Band-Maid reactions = more loyal Band-Maid fans = more subs and likes. There are a few though (Joel from Party Like a Rockstar and TankTheTech come to mind). Can't wait for you to dive further. You just gained a sub thanks to Band-Maid ;)
Edit: I would use another language if enough of the world spoke it. You have two languages to take from and rhyme with. She's getting better with English as well. Saiki sings the song "The Dragon Cries" completely in English if you want to check that one out, it's pretty damn good (They're all good) :p

Another BAND-MAID LIVE hit for lately is 'Hate' from Lollapalooza. It has a Call & Response "Battle" the likes of which hasn't been heard since 'Don't You Tell Me" LIVE. But putting English in with the Japanese is common, for BAND-MAID. They mix it up like no one else, even rhyming English and Japanese. Another one you might like is 'Real Existence' LIVE. It doesn't have a 'Call & Response "Battle" like 'Hate' LIVE, but the sound and camerawork are better.

It's impossible to fit everything that is awesome about this band in one comment, but the short version is "everything." Out of this world musicianship, breathing new life into hard rock, a real organic band that play their own instruments and write their own music, a band that has a very close relationship to their fans - which will become more and more clear as you go along, live shows with lots of audience interaction and humor, songs that will always leave you feeling better after you listen to them, songs that you can listen to 1,000 times and not get tired of because there is so much going on at once that you really can't take it all in anyway - and I could go on all day. I'd try jumping around a bit in time from here because they've been around for 10 years now and their music has gotten more and more complex throughout the years. Off the top of my head, try "Real Existence LIVE version", Blooming, Manners MV and then the Manners/Black Hole livestream combo, Daydreaming, Bubble, Don't You Tell ME, and maybe then bop into the more recent stuff like the instrumental From Now On, Influencer, Unleash!!!!! and the acoustic version of Smile. All of these except the last one are from their official channel. This band is a miracle - they are both a musician's band and a band that anyone can enjoy. They're more fun than a barrel of monkeys although once again I can't see myself why said barrel of monkeys are so highly rated in the fun department.

Suggestion if you haven't yet, also would be LOVEBITES - another all-female Japanese metal band, but they are unique in a way that Band-Maid is - comparable but the two are quite different, like Metallica and Iron Maiden mixed with Dragonforce :) I would recommend their latest version of "Hammer of Wrath" from 2023: ruclips.net/video/pHrWRT0Jeac/видео.html

This is a great band with ten years and who knows how many songs under their belt and you could and should spend a lot of time with this band but if you haven't done it already you absolutely must check out NEMOPHILA. Just as good as BAND-MAID but heavier. Rise Revive Sorai Oiran are just a few. Change the world is not as heavy but is still high energy and great fun. They also do a lot of covers that are really popular. Pick a song you like and listen to the NEMOPHILA version. They are also great live. BAND-MAID probably have the edge on them for live videos because they have more experience setting up their own sound stages but NEMOPHILA are still better than average. Two of the NEMOPHILA girls are mothers with the drummer having 2 children and the singer 1 child. It doesn't seem to hold them back NEMOPHILA is an absolutely kick ass band. Japanese is a very "dense" language, in that it can sometimes a lot more syllables to say something than it would take in English. So their primary lyricist, Miku, drops in English phrases when they better fit the meter or the sound she's going for.

66 years old, grew up listening to all the greats. Elvis, Stones, Beatles, The Who, Elton John, Zepplin, Queen, Eagles, Deep Purple, Doobie Brothers, Pink Floyd, etc, but Band-Maid is special (IMO, Queen is the only group that matches Band-Maid in consistent quality) ... you can like some songs of other groups more than a Queen of Band-Maid song (I don't, but I will admit it's possible for someone else ;-) ) but you can never say that Band-Maid or Queen have ever written a less than stellar song ... just ~ 130 more Band-Maid songs to go.
