    "Tauta" is an interesting word we share with Latvians. Oddly enough it is a cognate to the word "Tuetonic". The initial Latin form was "theodiscus" which comes from Old Germanic "þiudiskaz" which is almost identical to modern Lithuanian "tautiškas" (of the people). Here Germanic "þeudō" means "people" and suffix ‎ -iskaz = -iškas (of, from). Such suffixes (albeit without old Indo-European masculine ending) are also preserved in modern Scandinavian and in even more reduced form - in Slavic languages.

    • @eruno_
      @eruno_ 4 месяца назад +3

      It's definitely an interesting word. For me it has always been associated with ethnicity as such, but Lithuanian constitution defines "tauta" as first and foremost political/civic concept that is more in line with the view of citizen's belonging to national idea. So it can mean both ethnic or political nation depending on the context.

    • @eruno_
      @eruno_ 4 месяца назад +5

      I wonder if not for Soviet occupation how would another Lithuanian word, peoples/nation - "liaudis" (which acquired mostly negative associations) would be used. So far in non communist fields I only see it in reference to folk culture or folk traditions.

    The NATo in Europe is not much. People forget that the NATO is only strong when you count the US army with it. But Russia is way stronger than the NATO troops only in Europe. In case of war the US dont bring their whole army here.. ALaska is also close to Russia, they have to defend their own borders in case of ww3. Russia wil shred Europe, not because they are way better... they have production, we not. The NATo dont have enough weapons and munitions to defend them self for long time against Russia. Thats why the NATO must stop delivering weapons to Ukraine and have to build up own army first. Ukraine can not even handle the modern nato equipment, thats why they have big losses with NATO equipment, thats not because the NATO equipments sucks, its because they can not handle it, its to difficult for them, and a lot of equipment is not even build for full scale war.. The Abram for example, good tank against farmers and fishers in Iraq and Afganistan, but in Ukraine they are garbage. While that tank is designed in the cold war.. A T72 one shotted an Abram.

      The troops stationed in Lithuania are not intended to serve solely as a "protective force", but rather some troops from various nations were stationed there in case the Russians or Belarusians come up with the "glorious idea" of attacking Lithuania. That would be fatal for Russians and Belarusians.....they know exactly what such an attack on a NATO country with different militaries from Europe would result in.
