@@SimpsonsClassics yeah I’m the same ,just going to sort some rust on splitscreen and ready to use but found a lot more rust to deal with but once cut out you can plan ahead like you have ,shoddy repairs in the past we got to deal with just glad you didn’t take the lhd camper 😂

The repairs don’t bother me and I would have loved to have tackled that bay of yours I just wanted something closer to home also something we could use much faster, as you can tell I have to many projects and didn’t want it sat about. It's a shame the van is stuck on the drive as it would be much nicer to deal with in your lovely workshop. It has just taken me over a week to get the engine out of my Mini because I had to wait for a dry day. The joys of working on cars out side in NW England I guess.

Back to the old days, on the drive, but with far less room to move about due to vehicle scale lol. For a van thats about my age it's really not in bad condition bodily and some of it is more to do with failings of other people than the van itself, at least now it has someone with the skills and tenacity to get it right.

hello, we're in the same boat as you, we have a T2 with issues, but desprate to keep it on the road whilst working through the crusty bits. todays question is, can you give more details on the products you use to treat new steel when its being welding into closed sections. I have nightmares about underseal, cavity wax, paint or seam sealer catching fire inside a closed sil or other double skined panel. or just as bad rust starting from the back of a lovingly made patch panel.

As for the products I use a good etch or zinc primer on the inside or the panels and things like the inner sills I will cavity paint for added protection as primer is porous. Seam sealer there is all sorts out there. But I will cover this in a coming video. Cheers and all the best with your project👍
Love the channel and have watched it for several years!!! I notice that when welding in repair panels,you tend to do spots rather than a continous welding!! On my Draper 180 welder(must be at least 20 years old!!)i find that it takes the wire a second or so to start after pulling the trigger which makes doing spots nigh on impossible as by the time you pull the trigger and it starts and you let go there is no weld! !! Would a new wire feed unit sort this out or is it a case of the welder been old thats causing the issues!!?
Hey thanks for supporting the channel for so long. The main reason I tend to do that mainly on the minis is because the steel is just thin it would warp. If you have seen the blue clubman estate we did the floors on i more continuous welds on that. I guess it depends on what I am working on. The Volvo amazon is lovely to weld because it’s mad of nice think steel. As for your welder I would say it needs a new lance, the liner sounds like it’s gone and catching the wire. General question: what do you prefer for undercoating? for example matching up to the oem Amazon coating….would you use a lanolin base or asphalt base undercoating….
Hey I use upol gravitex normally for most my stuff unsure yet what I will use for the amazon. If you check some of the mini builds out you can see how all that looks once it’s over painted. With this one it will be black underneath not going for a show finish just want it nice and protected 👍
When I was restoring T2's nearly 25 years ago, many of them were so rotten that repairs to MOT standard would exceed the van's value. I guess the fact that values are now much higher, but more importantly most T2s are now MOT exempt, now means no need for half decent repair work, and back garden bodge welding, with 10 kg of paint on underseal, returns a completely rotten T2 to good as news structurally! These vans were difficult for pro welders to repair 25 years go, and I get the feeling that no need for MOT testing, is the main reason there are so many DIY types, showing how to repair them on here now?
Times are very different for most classic cars. But the fact costs of restoration are high, and seeing what a lot of companies put out I wouldn’t bother paying some of those either. It’s all about having a go yourself. We will make a nice job of this and it will be enjoyed for many years to come. Thanks for watching 👍

That teamed with the fact I am sponsored by a big tooling company means I try to use the best that’s available. But this channel is aimed at people who want to learn and want to have a go. Worst I ever came across was a vw I bought some time back.someone had fibbreglassed a structral member holding front suspension strut. Fibreglass came loose and the car swerved violently under backing. 🙄

Rust is the best thing to fix, low cost and all the body is fixable. Will be picking up my own t2 in a few days, can't wait to start fixing it up.

Hi Why don't you replace the whole sill?? Much better job. Time you cut out two sections of sills you may as well do the whole lot.Just my opinion.Ron
