The Quest for my holy grail of Metallic Paint

- I stopped using metallic paint, not happy with how they turned out. But now I figured it was time for one thorough experiment, to see if I could go back and once more call metallic paint my friend.
In this video I test a few different type of metallic paint but also try and use them in more creative ways than I have in the past. For those of you that are new to this channel.. welcome! And please, if you are after straight forward A - Z tutorial of how to paint stuff... well.. I'm all over the place. That said, there is one or two painting tips in here, if you have the patients.
A very special thank you to Alpha Spel - My local friendly game store - And to Nicklas for coming to my aid. Don't forget to support your LFGS
Metallic paints tried in this video:
Scalecolor - Metallics & Alchemy
Formula P3 Metallics
Vallejo Acrylic Metal Color Airbrush Colors
Vallejo Liquid Silver
Vallejo Metal Medium
Green Stuff World Pure Metal Pigments
Green Stuff World Chrome Metal
InStar Spectrum Gold Shift
PS. Don't throw your paint in the bin. I just did that for theatrical purposes.

That was a great video, and a stunning end result!
Thanks! That means a lot coming from you :) Cheers!
Here he is... creeping into the smaller channels. I see you Jazza and your Tabletop channel... I see you ... (because I also watch you, but ya know)
PS - Give 52k a shoutout because he awesome and deserves it
awesome :)
@@52Miniatures hi , when i want a miniature metal ( how the metal color looks from distance ) i use a metalic effect from weatering effect tamiya , if you can get one from amazon you can try it. Its an effect so it is not a "paint" and its dificult to apply without stain the nearby areas.
@@aldoandresmendozaguerra8651 I'll look into that Aldo, thanks!
The cleanest voice over on the scene, I would listen to a narration of my microwave instructions
As long as I can microwave some metal...
This and Baldermort, the best voices in mini war gaming.
Literally any Brit
The algorithm has blessed me with this channel, love the cinematography and the lack of music, love your take on the videos in general, and i look forward to more content.
I've always struggled with metallics and this has given me some ideas to try and improve that.
Awesome, thank you!
"you need alcohol do dilute... not the kids, the paint" lol
😂 step away from the child!
normally i don't respond to youtube video's but i just got to let you know i absolutely love your style of storytelling on the same subject mathers like metallic paints its a refreshing take on the hobby video's out there
Thanks Jarl, I appreciate that. It's always nice to hear these things, keeps me going.
That mini is absolutely stunning. The paint job is as variety, intricate, and detailed as the sculpt itself. An absolute feast for the eyes.
Wow thanks! Glad to hear it Astro
Incredible work! Really love how you break down your thought process for us to follow along!
Thanks Richard, it evolved into quite a long video... I'm glad to hear you enjoyed the journey.
Wow.. amazing delivery and amazing result. Thank you for taking the time to put these videos together. Pleasure to watch.
My pleasure P, thank you.
Such a good journey through all of the different paints. Thank you for taking us with you!
Great :) & my pleasure!
For me, you are the Sir David Attenborough of painting videos, subscribed. I would say it is the pacing of how you speak and the details, as well as your actions in the video. Your videos often have a documentary quality to them, in additional to a tutorial quality which makes them stand out.
Thanks for that H, I appreciate it. I'll have to do more painting outdoors, with at bit of wind sweeping through my hair. Preferably with a walrus or two around :) But seriously, I very much appreciate you comment.
I have to say, your narration gets me everytime man. This content is amazing! Do keep it up.
Thanks A!
Magnificent! You have given me so much to think about now. Thank you!
Well thank you Jonny, I'm glad to hear it :)
Wow, love the effects you've got going on here. The choices you made for the metallic skin were inspired!
Thanks C, glad you liked it. I like just playing a bit deaf to all the tips out there and spend time experimenting instead. Sometimes a bit of a waste of time, sometimes quite refreshing.
Start of video-"I cant stand metallics!"
End of video-"I need to create a paint scheme using nothing but metallics!"
Fantastic content. Only a few days ago I found your channel and its already become one of my favorites... Keep up the good work!
Thanks Joe and Welcome to the channel. Yeah, that was a bit of a surprize... I have something in mind.. just have to finish the stormcast army first 😂
Character Development.
Ah I just really enjoy the calm, clear and personable way you communicate in your videos mate. Great job!
Thanks Jarl, I appreciate it :)
It was a lovely surprise to see such an amazing video (and paint job) and find my former friendly local game store Alphaspel from when I used to live in Stockholm.
Tack för hjälpen och videon.
Snygg måleriarbete ♥️
Tack Luca! I appreciate it, and yes, Alpha Spel sure is a lovely place :)
Thank you so much for sharing that experiment - awesome result!
Thanks! Glad to hear it :)
I love your videos, your content is always so compelling and interesting, even when the topic has been covered by others before. You have such an interesting script and presentation.
Thank you M, I very much appreciate it.
Gonna try this Method later this year! Super cool approach. Thanks for the 10 Minutes! 😀
Nice to hear David! Please use the ten minutes irresponsibly.
Another great vid and another outstanding paint job, well done fella
Thank you 🙏 appreciate it!
love your dedication/ humor towards the subject and the finished product is amazing! great content :)
Thanks!
really fun and amazing video. really great subject matter youve dealt with unlike no other.
Thanks G! I appreciate it!
Seriously, I almost can't stand how great your videos are. Thank you so much.
Again.
Well thanks P, I appreciate you letting me know :)
Just found your channel and I am absolutely delighted. Thanks so much for the very obvious effort that goes into making these videos. Your perspective is very refreshing. I agree that there might be a bit much speed painting ( I watched your video about "fretting over time spent on the hobby while you're doing the hobby. Excellent!). I hope to see many many more videos from you.
Thanks Jesse, and thanks for the comment. I appreciate it.
This video is awesome! I've been researching different brands for metallics, so glad you did this. oh, and WOW the paint job turned out great.
Thanks a lot Mikey, I'm glad you liked it. I mean, please go on with your own research, we all have different taste. But now at least you have some examples to go by :)
Superb end result, and such creative thinking, great video
Thank you K! I appreciate it
I have recently found your channel and I wanted to say that your content is fantastic. I appreciate your style of storytelling whilst also being very informative.
Thank you Michael, I appreciate it. Welcome to the channel.
That was a really insightful look at metallic paint application. Much appreciated.
Glad to hear it I, thanks.
Wow, what a fantastic video, the writing, editing and camera work is so on point.
Thank you Nana!
AMAZING video. Really love your format and your skill!
Thanks M, I appreciate hearing it :)
Great video. I’ve been watching your progress and this experiment has resulted in your best paint job to date in my opinion. One of the things I noticed is how your previous experiments, developed in your older videos, are still visible in elements of this piece (the base in particular reminding me of your pink/blue Stormcast) but in a far more subtle and integrated way. For a beginner like me it makes for a far more inspirational viewing experience than watching miniature painters who already have a fully developed style. Also the matt varnish was utterly transformative. Kudos!
Thanks Tony! I very much appreciate you comment, because it is one of the big things I subtly(?) try to communicate. Inspiration.. and just being allowed to have a "hobby journey" without aiming for a golden daemon of making a living out of the whole thing. I'm glad to hear that I still can connect a bit with someone new to the hobby, that is always something I'm afraid of loosing the more advanced my own painting gets.
Great information... Things learnt, here! The mini itself, turned out beautiful!
Thanks V! Glad to hear it.
Great, methodical process! While initially time consuming (I bet) what's learned can be usefully implemented going forward and looks like it's worth some of the effort. Wonderful video essay.
Thanks V, appreciate it. It was quite time consuming. And I actually cut a lot out. There was more test minis.. with inks and contrast paints and oil paints.. all kind of stuff. But this video turned out long enough as is. And I kept all the important bits :)
Amazing paint job buddy! Also I really enjoyed watching you go over all these different paints from some of the major paint lines out there!
Thanks Kyle, yeah, I mean there is a lot more out there... but also a lot was discarded in the first "testing" stage at the store.
Oh I looove the quality of your videos! So good mate! Keep it up
Thanks you H, you too!
Man, that thing is beautiful. Excellent job.
Thanks a lot Bart!
The final paint job was stunning. You are a very talented person - brilliant content! 👌🏻
Thank you D! I appreciate it!
I found this channel just 30mins ago and have just found one of my most favourite and beautifully painted miniatures (experiment or not). Very Slaneeshy, I'll binge your channel now
Thank you Kishki, I appreciate it.
Another great video! and that store looks amazing, really envious
Thanks Leo! It's is a lovely place. They have so much stuff. And a lot of boardgames for all ages. So my son likes to hang out there to :)
@@52Miniatures I remember the one that I use to visit as a kid, they are a treasure. Sadly in my city there isn't one so focused on wargames and board games anymore. Enjoy it!!
This is a fascinating look at using metallic paint. Very inspiring!
Thanks D, glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for the info. Very interesting results.
My pleasure Basil! Thanks for watching.
This one turned out amazing! You have become my favorite channel on RUclips. I'm about to hop in the hobby myself. Thanks for great content and inspiration. Stay positive! ps. I also love the little 'The Creation of Adam' reference on your RUclips banned. just perfect. ^^
Ha ha! Well, you are the first one to comment on it :) Welcome to the hobby, hope you find a good place in it.
that was a fun experimental journey to follow. Thanks for that.
Nice to hear Renier, thanks.
The views into your thought process are pure gold.
Thanks Rob!
I'm currently on a binge watch of your channel while assembling my Magnus the Red, but I would just like to say that "dilute the paint, not the kids" is an awesome line.
I try and keep telling myself that over and over again... my son is still intact :) Thanks FDU, I'm glad you are enjoying the videos.
Thx for your videos. I realy like the style of your work.😁
Thanks René, appreciate it.
I rarely watch painting videos, but you made this really accessible. Thank you!
Also, it's really cool to see someone from Stockholm! I've visited family there often.
Nice to hear Einar, I really appreciate it.
Really enjoyed this video, thanks. Lovely job on the miniature too. It’s great to hear a
your thought process as you go along.
Also, I’m told the GSW chrome paint needs to cure for a long time before you can apply other stuff on top - maybe that’s why one attempt failed and the next succeeded?
Thanks Daniel, this might very much be true. It was the first time I used them.. and as usual I didn't really research much. In these instances it would be nice with a little more information on the bottles I think.
Nice ! Coffee, cigarette & great hobby discussions. I have settled on using Vallejo liquid gold range of metallic paint. Thanks for sharing this information
My pleasure Adam, glad you enjoyed the vid :)
different approach to testing paints than many others, liked and subscribed. keep it up =)
Thanks O, welcome to the channel :)
Just found out you channel, and i am hooked. I will start a binge watching weekend :). I love the story arcs you create and the narration . It is trully unique. Also you know... You are a great painter
Thanks! And welcome to the channel :)
Great timing, I just agonized for days about what combination of metallic paints I wanted to use for my Custodes. Keep it up!
High fives for prefect timing :)
This is the 2nd time I've watched this today.... I'm amazed each time. Just the way you work, your thought process, etc...I honestly feel 'smarter' now than when I first turned on YT. Hahaha. The way you explain your methods is a big help for me. (I also thought it was really great to see you and your son working together at the desk)
Thanks Adam! This is a surprising effect! Maybe something I can patent. “Get smart fast!” :) just kidding, I appreciate your comment, thank you. I enjoy spending time with my son :)
Great video and amazing paintjob! Had the same issue with metalic paint and really liked the resault after the matt varnish,.
Thanks T, and glad to hear it. Yes, It seems some of us are born matte, some glossy. Whatever makes each and every one of us happy.
I randomly stumbled upon this video and I gotta say this was such interesting story telling about your journey with metallics. I loved the end result even if your metallics were mattified. Super intriguing video!
Glad to hear it P. And welcome to the channel :)
Bravo, Sir. Wonderfully informative.
Thank you Jack 🙏I’m glad to hear it.
I always end up dulling down my metallics either with a total matte varnish, or with enough matte washes and stuff that the shine is dead. My final step is re-highlighting only the very brightest points with unadulterated shiny metallics.
Wow. Im an amateur mini painter who has gotten recently frustrated with the metallics I'm using, and you are INSPIRING ME! Bless you, you've got a new subscriber here.
Thank you Joe, I'm glad to hear it. Welcome to the channel and I hop I can continue to inspire.
This is really amazing man, fantastic video and beautiful model!
Thanks! Appreciate it.
Merci pour ce travail de fourmi ! Cela va beaucoup me servir dans mes futures peintures 😊 oh et excellent montage ! Bon courage dans les futurs projets
Merci Thomas!
Looked awesome. Worth the effort and wait :)
Thanks Brent! The videos take quite some time to make. But I rather do it this way :)
Fantastic results, Great tips and techniques, all packaged in a professionally produced video! Not to mention that your dry humor is spot-on....the governator...I am from Sandy Eggo. Much Thanks.
Thanks D! I appreciate it.
Great video. I have the alchemy paints and never thought of using them this way. I'll give it a go for sure!
Awesome! Go for it :)
The vallejo air paints look so nice! Amazing video as always mate :))
Thanks Callum, appreciate it :)
Another great video, matey. Definitely gives me an Avenue to explore for my Stormcast!
Thanks! Glad to hear it!
Excellent video with humorist well-paced copy-writing! 👌
Thanks as always Bart, good to hear :)
Brilliant video, 52... it was really interesting to see the number of paints used and their different properties and results. I really like how in-depth this went. It's made me consider a few approaches to my own use of metallics. Thanks Alex! :-)
Glad to hear it HB! There was a lot of testing! Some didn't make it to the video.. One thing... that was just one to many... was using inks or contrast paints on different metallic paints. Like highlighting a gold with silver, then slapping on a blue transparent, getting green shadows and blue highlights... If dialled in right that kind of stuff could be a lot of fun.
@@52Miniatures I've considered doing this type of thing for some Alpha Legion miniatures that I'd like to paint eventually :-)
Somehow just found your videos this week. They are fantastic and I love the "stream of consciousness" style of storytelling you use. Keep going!
Thanks W, I appreciate hearing it. Welcome to the channel :)
Mate, you just made my top 3 channel! All the way up there with Marco Frisoni and Zatcaskagoon. Keep up the amazing content!
Thanks T, how very nice to hear. I appreciate it :)
Incredible results. Another example of how much there is to learn in this art form, and the fact that I really do know nothing. :-) Great stuff. Cheers!
Thanks H! There is so much out there! mind boggling... and that's just our little niche of the woods.
Hej friend. Gday from Australia. I’ve just started painting miniatures for the first time ever since December. Your style and videos are excellent. I wanted to say thank you I think I’ve watched them all now. I will be trying to emulate a lot of your work. Please keep on making content. I appreciate it greatly.
Welcome to the hobby Dom, glad to hear that the videos can inspire. Thanks for that.
Although I had a different experience with metallics, I really enjoyed the process of explaining your struggle and initial objections, and how you eventually overcame them. The result is remarkable and has given me a lot to think about, and opened ways to improve the way I used shiny paints, and metallics in particular. Thank you for a great video: both in content AND in form. Ha en fin dag!
Glad to hear it! Tack själv
Really amazing, this inspired me to try this on a mini of my own.
Thanks J! I’m glad you did and thank you for the pics :)
I love the hybrid metal technique, where you do your typical NMM process, but in the final highlight use the metallic paint it really sells the illusion that the whole thing is metallic without having that metallic layer all over.
Yeah Jason, I hope I can practice that a bit more in the future :)
I appreciate your low key delivery of jokes haha. Great content! Thanks for the tips
Thanks Jason!
Gorgeous paint job!
Thank you!
Great work! I really enjoy your deep dives into a topic like this. All the extra colours you added to the base "gold" or "silver" really are the ticket to great looking metallics.
Thanks man, appreciate it. I would have wanted to flip out a bit more with the colours I think... but I also wanted to "show" how the paints looked without to much dabbling. I think when I do more metalic work it will definitely be tinted with colour, even if its just the grey to tone things down.
@@52Miniatures sounds like the old TMM way of things. I've been using titanium white for my final highlights on table top minis and really enjoying it. It's fun to mess with them..
Amazing video and a great insight into the world of metallic paint. I really liked the Green Stuff World pigments and will consider trying these out when I can get some. I use the Vallejo air metallics and have never really had any bad issues with them. They do require a few more coats but the end result has always impressed me. Thank you for sharing this with us!
My pleasure Andy. I think the GSF pigments are great. One still needs to mix, find a good ratio.. and make sure not to get the pigment on everything around.. but as a paint it looks really nice.
Woah such a great mini. Amazing video
Thank you DG! 😊
This must be one of your best minis to the date! (in my opinion). Abolutely blown away...
Thanks Miguel!
Another great video. Thank you! And thanks for the free 10 minutes!
Thank you! And my pleasure. I hope you used them irresponsibly :)
Great work, nice to see your exploration of metallics bearing fruit
Thanks Marshal!
Great video Alex. I just picked up the Army Painter coloured metallics, so this was a great perspective on a bunch of other options. Appreciated!
Great! They have new stuff out right?
This was maybe the most inspiring video about metallic paints, which I have ever seen. Would love to see something similar also about other fringy ranges of hobby products. Even your take on contrast paints for example. (Combination of contrast paints and metallics is very interesting BTW). Thank you :)
Thanks Mark, I appreciate it. I did actually do a few contrast paint tests with the metallics as well.. but it was sort of one thing to many and didn’t turn out super great. Maybe with some more experimenting.. the thing is I hardly have any contrast paints, and I’m not really into getting any yet. We’ll see what goes in the future :) thanks for the tip anyway!
FIrst of all thank you, and that was really interesting never thought about using metallics the way you did, also learned about that metallic pigments i might need to see if i can get them in the u.s, might need to rewatch this again :P
Thanks! Glad it was helpful! I know the metallic pigment thing is a new product, but I'm sure they should be out in stores by now. You can probably check GSW website for a list of stores. They would have one I should think?
I have to admit, when you were doing your zenithal highlights with a rattle can I was getting anxious that you’d get paint on the sleeves of that sweater!
Thank you for the 10 min, I don't even mind that you took some back lol. I am glade that you seem to always be one step ahead of me and can work all these things out before I have too lol. I have been searching for some alternatives metallic paints as well. I am thinking of trying the AK interactive true metal line. They are wax based and are thinned with white spirits. They seem to work a lot like oil paints (which I now have!) and can even be mixed/blended with them. Great video, thanks!
Hello Josh! How nice to hear from you. Yes the Ak seems to be interesting paints, a lot of folks seem to like them. I’m a bit bummed out by the company itself, they have done some rather awful marketing stuff... but there is no one else that does as matte varnish as they...
This is like listening to an audio book, very cool.
inspirational video...im going to have try some other metalic paints now
Good luck Pylonn
"Insects definitely do a lot of metals" :D - Love this video! Thanks for the great experiment with metals
They do! :) Thanks Eugen
Purple and Copper... Fantastic! I'm trying that for sure!
Thanks Miguel! Go for it :)
I was thinking about getting this kit snd doing pretty much the same
You've full convinced to grab it now
Cool! It's a very nice mini I think. Watch out when trying to glue on the wee lady, I totally messed that up and had to cut her leg of and try and in the end had to sculpt a new knee from greenstuff..
@@52Miniatures thanks for the tip! Ill be sure to look out for that thanks
Thanks. This helped a lot. I was getting frustrated with metallic paints too. I may have to pick up some of the Scale75 Alchemy sets. I like their other paints, I also do a lot of glazing and wet blending. Thanks again for the informative video.
Great Stephen, it’s still, like most metallic paint, difficult to paint with I think. But the final result is great and the sets are helpful
Outstanding!
Thank you kindly!
I'm so glad you told me to use the alcohol to dilute the vallejo silver paint instead of my kids, I was so close to using on them haha great video btw
Good thing we got that right huh?!
this was fantastic
Glad to hear it C, thanks :)
The most entertaining metal paint exploration that I have found to date! Subscribing. Thank you...
Thanks and welcome Jet!
You're not only a painter, you are a poet. Watching your videos is therapeutic.
Thank you R 🙏
best channel i have discovered this year
Well thanks A!
I have discovered your channel lately and I think you reconciliate me with Wet Blending technique. Now I urge to return at my paintbench.. but there's so much others videos. XD
Keep going mate.
Thanks Bob, appreciate it. Glad to hear you getting into the painting, leave the videos till later :)
