When we think about Western music literature, some common misconceptions are that it's serious, elitist and static. Sebastian Bach who is known for composing many brilliant religious music--- is witty with this. He wrote this "Coffee Cantata" in 1730s about a young women's love for coffee. As a result of colonialism, coffee was becoming popular in Europe in the 18th century. There were lots of debates and conflicts surrounding the consumption of coffee at the time. How grand! Thank you for posting this!!!
People forget that classical music was modern music at some point. Wasn't everything commissioned to the pope, sometimes composers just wrote for fun and entertainment. Some of the composers even had rockstar like status. For example the piano is now the symbol of traditionalism. But back in the day when it was the new thing it shaked up the musical world and some of the musicians even got critisism to be too rebellious and sacrilegious
My respect for Bach has ascended to the Heavens upon discovering this piece. So he was such a coffee lover, he wrote a brief opera to pay tribute to it. If that's true, I'm immensely impressed.
I have already listened to better flute players. But I have already listened to more challenging arias, too. That is the important point. Please listen to the Cantata BWV 8. This cantata contains an aria of which I do not know the exact title but which is a tremendous challenge for the flutist.
Better flute players? Wow. So dismissive. This is a Traverso... And most modern flute players wouldn't last 2 minutes playing this instrument. It has no mechanical keys and all players are expected to be able to play the instrument in all 12 keys and know all fingerings per each octave. The player, Wilbert Hazelzet is a KNOWN LEGEND the world over who has in his time covered some of the more virtuoso pieces for the traverso.
A common feature of Baroque opera is that some instruments or voices will be inactive for long periods. For example, this Tenor had PLENTY of time to get torqued on espresso before he was needed again!
This was written in the same year that Pergolesi wrote the opera buffa "La Serva Padrona", so it can be looked upon as a German opera buffa, or what German opera buffa would have been like if such a category existed. This soprano wants coffee, but in the Pergolesi piece Uberto wants from Despina something altogether different.

When u studying Bach's cantatas for ur upcoming music exam, suddenly found such a cute piece while doing research, and want to go to a coffee house like right now... :( Tbh, I rly should find someone to learn this cantata together later when I've got some time.
How disappointing that NONE of the instrumentalists (except Koopman, of course) are named in the credits. The flutist is a master. No acknowledgment? Very disappointing. If anyone knows the flutist's name or any of the instrumentalists, please reply!
As others have discussed in this thread, for all practical purposes the Coffee Cantata is comic opera. But I submit that furthermore it's essentially advertising for the local coffee house (Café Zimmermann in Leipzig).
I think this is my new favorite piece by Bach.
Try and listen to the cantata BWV 8 😊
Today in Music History I learned that Bach wrote a coffee cantata. You learn something new every day :)
Right 😉👍

The 'Coffe Cantata' by Bach is considered the first commercial jingle in History.

One often forgets how masterfully written this is, seemingly with one casual stroke of pen. As if he said: yes, I can do this as well my friends
The best interpretation ever, full of charm and creativity. Don't mess with the Dutch when they play Bach!
Koopman and Mertens in particular! Though Harnoncourt is incredible too!
Truth.
They say Bach wrote no operas. but this is basically a miniature comic opera, so he kinda wrote one opera just because he loved coffee.

Złe dziecię, dziewczyno pusta,
Ach, kiedyż ja wygram mą sprawę:
Rzuć ty wreszcie precz tę kawę!
Liesgen
Nie bądź ojcze tak surowy.
Jeśli nie wypiję co dzień
Trzech filiżaneczek kawy,
To zostanie ze mnie cień,
Wiór, jak z kozy pieczeń sucha.
Oj, jak smaczna kawa słodka.
Niż całusów tysiąc milsza,
Niż muszkatołowe wino.
Kawę, kawę muszę ja pić,
A kto chce mnie czym pokrzepić,
Niech kawy naleje jeno!
Schlendrian
Jeśli mi nie rzucisz kawy,
To nie będziesz na zabawy,
Ani też na spacer chodzić.
Liesgen
Zgoda!
Byłem tylko kawę miała.
Schlendrian
Ależ głuptas z mej córeczki!
Nie sprawię ci na fiszbinach
Rozszerzanej sukieneczki.
Liesgen
Łatwo na to ja przystanę.
Schlendrian
Nie będziesz mogła w oknie stać
By z przechodniów mieć zabawę!
Liesgen
To też, lecz daj się ubłagać
I pozostaw mi mą kawę!
Schlendrian
Nie dostaniesz też z mej ręki
Ni srebrnej, ni złotej wstęgi
By czepek przyozdobić!
Liesgen
Dobrze, byłem sobie kawę mogła robić.
Schlendrian
Ach ty płocha Liesgen, ty,
Przystaniesz na wszystko li?
Schlendrian
Dziewcząt co są uparte tak
Nie łatwo jest przemóc. Wszak
Gdy jej miejsce czułe znasz
Łatwo już ją przekonasz.
Schlendrian
Bądź ojcu swemu posłuszną!
Liesgen
We wszystkim, ale nie z kawą.
Schlendrian
Więc się musisz i z tym zgodzić:
Nigdy za mąż nie wychodzić.
Liesgen
Panie ojcze! Męża toć chcę!
Schlendrian
Klnę się, nie ma o tym mowy.
Liesgen
Póki kawy nie porzucę?
Ach, kawo! Na zawsze żegnaj mi!
Panie ojcze, odtąd nie tknę już kawy.
Schlendrian
Wreszcie; więc męża poszukam ci!
Jeszcze dziś
Drogi ojcze, zechciej iść!
Mąż, ach mąż!
Przed oczami stoi wciąż!
Oby rzecz się szybko działa,
Bym, gdy kawę ja odłożę,
Jeszcze nim się spać położę
Dziarskiego męża dostała!
Chodzi i szuka teraz Schlendrian stary
Jakby swojej córce Liesgen
Rychło męża dać do pary;
Lecz Liesgen skrycie głosi wszędzie:
Zalotnik żaden w dom nie wejdzie,
Zanim sam tego nie przyrzecze
I bym też w kontrakcie ślubnym miała,
Że mi dozwoli, gdy będę chciała,
Bym kawę sobie gotowała.
Kot nie da spokoju myszy,
Panny zaś będą przy kawie trwać.
Skoro mama kawę znała,
Babcia także ją pijała,
Któż córki zechce więc oczerniać.
….
Wonderful performance
Beautiful! Thank you for posting!
This was so delightful.
Incredible! Beautifully done, thank you
When u studying Bach's cantatas for ur upcoming music exam, suddenly found such a cute piece while doing research, and want to go to a coffee house like right now... :( Tbh, I rly should find someone to learn this cantata together later when I've got some time.
I know, how fun would it be to get like, a couple friends together and perform these pieces together. That'd be a blast!
Noah Abel Exactly!!
@@pineapple_1066 I'm down to join you two!
@@Nooticus Welcome! One more ensemble member! ☕️
Предлагаю себя в качестве сопрано 😉
"I don't like coffee"
**several people are typing...**
I don't like coffee either XD
The 33 dislikes are all from coffee-haters.
Marvelous! The performance was extraordinary as well!
Best recording.
Bravo!
Does anyone else jumps every time they smash the coffee cup 😂😂 i love this version, as well as Christopher Hogwood's one with Emma Kirkby ❤
enjoy a cuppa joe with a cuppa Johann
Nice and enjoyable, thank you for sharing!
GENIUS!!
Лучшее исполнение!..
This is delightful!
Thank you for sharing ❤
Descobri essa cantata de Bach porque eu estava lendo "Cafeína" uma obra brasileira por Maurício Torres Assumpção.
I think Johann would have totally approved of this.
Bach in the galant style.
An acted cantata. This shows us, perhaps, that Bach could compose an opera.
bellissima
Oh how great is that! Amazing :D
Why am i in love with the final trio from my younghood onwards. 🥰💙
How disappointing that NONE of the instrumentalists (except Koopman, of course) are named in the credits. The flutist is a master. No acknowledgment? Very disappointing. If anyone knows the flutist's name or any of the instrumentalists, please reply!
It’s Wilbert Hazelzet!
As others have discussed in this thread, for all practical purposes the Coffee Cantata is comic opera. But I submit that furthermore it's essentially advertising for the local coffee house (Café Zimmermann in Leipzig).
Wunderbar, danke schon!!

Then you are the poorer for your myopia. Dig it, guys!
Schledrian when holding the book in his bass aria was actually reading form the notations
Who is the flautist, he is wonderful?
Remember, it must be brewed with exactly 60 beans to be perfect.
Gimmick pop songs began a lot earlier than we'd like to think.
