In the era of computer use: #1 Kasparov #2 Carlsen #3 Karpov #4 Anand #5 Kramnik My guess is that Bobby Fischer was the most complete chess player of all time.

Garry just had a more dynamic style and destroyed his rivals in a lot more iconic games. Magnus is more like an engine and crushes his rivals in endgames.
Anand the most influential player of all time. Look at the current crop of players. Almost all of them are because of Anand. Ridiculous to put Kramnik over
Anand was the first elite players to integrate chess engines extensively into his preparation. Known for his deep opening knowledge and rapid adaptation to new technology, Anand's success demonstrated the importance of engine-assisted analysis. So I would say very influential in that way. Bobby Fischer had to learn Russian to read russian chess books to get better at chess. Vishy was the first Indian Grandmaster, First Asian World Championship. He single-handedly made a country of a billion people fall in love with the game of chess.
By peak dominance: 1 Paul Morphy 2 Bobby Fisher 3 Wilhelm Steinitz 4 Mikhail Botvinnik 5 Gary Kasparov 6 Jose Raul Capablanca 7 Emanuel Lasker 8 Magnus Carlsen 9 Alexander Alekhine 10 Anatoly Karpov By longevity at the top: 1 Emanuel Lasker 2 Gary Kasparov 3 Wilhelm Steinitz 4 Mikhail Botvinnik 5 Magnus Carlsen 6 Anatoly Karpov 7 Alexander Alekhine 8 Viswanathan Anand 9 Vladimir Kramnik 10 Jose Raul Capablanca
For me Fisher,Magnus and Kasparov(top3) Capablanca Karpov Anand and Kramnik Lasker and Alexander both Mikhals I mean after top 3 all are similar for me in terms of strenght I'd say even someone like Caruana who isn't a champion is probsbly the top 5 strongest player in history
Kids today dont realize that Bobby Fischer was a celebrity on the level of Beyonce or Taylor Swift today. General Motors offered him 10 million dollars to do a car commercial - in 1972 money!! Try sn experiment. Ask 100 random people in a mall who Magnus Carlsen is. You' ll be lucky if 5 out of100 know. In 1972 Bobby Fischer would have 100% name recognition all over the world.😮
@@ericrossoni There is no way that Magnus Carlson has anywhere near the name recognition Bobby Fischer had or had, and anyone who thinks so is completelyb delusional.
Always? Congratulations on your prophetic powers. Carlson is already on par with Kasparov and they are the two _greatest_ players in the history of the game because of their extraordinary dominance over so many years. Fischer was the _strongest_ player ever for about two-and-a-half years (1970-72), just like Capablanca in his prime, but by abandoning the game at his peak, he forfeited any claim to being the greatest, which is a different criterion, encompassing longevity at the top against the most powerful competition as well as peak strength.
Here is the only thing about Kasparov that is worth knowing. In the 1995 Anand vs Kasparov world championship, Anand took the lead in game 9. In game 10, every time Kasparov made a move, he got up to go to the bathroom and slammed the door behind him so hard the room shook. The young and mild mannered Anand did not complain to the arbiter, who also did not act. Bullying destroys lives, and bullied children suffer lifelong low self esteem. If you need such tactics to win, then you are no champion. Kasparov needs to be made to confront his behavior and answer for it.
@@whaddoiknow6519 Lol if you think slamming a bathroom door is 'bullying' I recommend you don't watch Bambi, you'll be emotionally scarred.I It's pointless to expect people to play 'nice' all the time, so it's better to just grow a thicker skin.
Smyslov! Inexcusable omission. He was nearly equal to Botvinnink and at his peak was stronger than Petrosian. Likewise with Spassky. Korchnoi was the greatest player never to have won the world title, displacing Rubinstein, Keres for that distinction.
This list is intriguing, but Karpov deserves to be placed higher, at 6th place, while Nakamura and Caruana lack the historical significance to be included in the top 10 chess players of all time.
Capablanca was not honest claiming that he never studied chess, a lot of people take that literally. Considering as how he played all the same openings and improvements that others played he clearly both studied chess a lot in youth and kept up with the games of others. He wouldn't be world champion if he didn't.
To do a fair comparison there are 2 possibilities: one pretend all players were born around the same time, say the past, so they do not have current chess knowledge or acquired at the time they played. So go back to Morphy's time, I think Morphy would beat all players. Now, jump to the future so Morphy, Capablanca, Fischer etc. were born around the time of Magnus Carson, thereby having access to computers and all current theory. This would be very interesting, I give a slight edge to Morphy for his ability to grasp theory, understand positional play and incredible calculating ability. But who knows. Fischer would study night and day. I think the answer would be which player would make the fewest mistakes, because a topl level chess many games are won due to a mistake.
Great video and list, I would probably switch magnus to one and garry to 2 but it's up to personal opinion. Glad to see that you guys put in research as well 👍 Also maybe Anand over Kramnik but it's close
My personal favourites: Kasparov, founder of Stockfish, Fischer, Tal Favourite non super GM players and teachers: Chessnetwork, Tal Baron, John Bartholomew, Simon Williams, Frager68
Imagine not adding 5 time world champion in this list😮they should add Anand that man one of the greatest of all time, remaining in top 10 consistently more than 20 years

Kasparov is the greatest player as he played dynamic not like Magnus is playing boring position style and waiting for the mistake of opponents. Apart from this Mikhail Tal is the only player who played for the crowd and chess fans considering chess as a sport.
I'm glad one of these lists finally mentioned Alexander Alekhine, the guy was an absolutely fantastic player in his time and had to beat Capablanca to win the world title. Really study his games, people. I've been astonded about his omission from most lists like this, list after list, like he was some nobody. Ridiculous.
You can't give everyone an honorable mention. Steinitz, Euwe, Smyslov, Petrosian, Spassky, Ding are all world champions who didn't get a mention. Not to mention players like Andersson, Bronstein, Zukertort, Reti, Taimonov, Susan Polgar, Nona, Vera Menchik, Fabi (third highest rating of all time), Ho Yifan. Somebody is always going to be left off.
@@jasonkoch3182 Andersson or Anderssen? Big difference. Also while female chess is great for what it is, none deserve to be mentioned among the all-time greats. The best a female achieved was a brief top 10 appearance. Ding my butt.
Morphy destroyed Anderssen (an ill Morphy too) whereas a fit Steinitz struggled and fought a tough battle against the same Anderssen...with the battle being neck and neck for the most part. Yes, both Morphy and Steinitz defeated Anderssen.
Sorry, I made my comments before I watched the video, my bad. I've just realized that you added and mentioned Paul Morphy in the video, good call. I think Morphy was the best ever.

watchmojo cant get any list right its crazy.leaving anand out when he was one of the best and THE BEST chess ambassador in the world and especially india. He is the reason gukesh, pragg, arjun and many top indian gms are here and we enjoy their games
Carlsen is technically strongest by Elo rating but Elo isn't a completely accurate guide, Kasparov is still my favorite player of all time. People should remember that in the late 80s and throughout the 90s Kasparov almost made chess "cool" to people in the West. He injected some masculinity into what was seen as a nerd's game. He had the same sort of early Sean Connery as James Bond charisma. It's easy to admire Carlsen's coolness and efficiency but I just find him boring as a player. compared to Kasparov
Even Lasker and Botvinnik thought that Morphy was better than them, so omitting Morphy was bad. Lasker and Botvinnik thought that Morphy was the best. Kasparov said that Morphy was a super genius, Fischer said that Morphy would beat everyone if Morphy came back from the dead and learnt modern theory. Fischer also said that Morphy was the most accurate chess player ever.
Perhaps this is favoritism on your part. Quite often we have our heroes - sports, music, etc. and tend to say they are the best of all times. But at least in chess it is very objective, so during any current era, we know who was the best at the time. Magnus is and has been for about 10 years the best chess player in the world. His tremendous advantage (which current players also have) namely computer analysis and being able to play ten of thousands of games definitely helps in your chess abilities. Therefore , if players from the past had such tools at their disposal it would greatly enhance their chess skills. When I study Morphy's games, myself and other chess players eg. Fischer is amazed by how incredible his chess games are, especially when you realize the limited chess knowledge available at the time of Morphy. Bobby Fischer picked Morphy as the most talented player ever, and in a set match Morphy, if given time to study current theory, beat any player who ever played the game. Michael Smith
This needs to be diverted into before computers and after computers were a thing. Because let’s face it like it or not computers have made a massive impact on the game of chess.
Let's be honest we can't keep saying Kasparov is better than carlsen what else do you want him to do all this rattling stuff is annoying To be honest and to be respectful if Kasparov wasn't alive he wouldn't be number 1 and that should not be a criteria I mean Magnus has won everything done everything As chess fans we all know what Magnus is But all is well
I believe Paul Morphy should be number 1. He didn't have as many shoulders of giants to stand upon because he was biggest of giants whose shoulders are what all modern players stand upon.
Generally a good list but it's hard comparing one generation to another. I'm still a Bobby Fischer fan but it's hard to argue against Magnus Carlsen. I would place Mikhail Tal a little higher and I have seen a list by a grandmaster that placed Paul Morphy at #1. I actually agree. Nobody has ever been so far ahead of his contemporaries. What he have been like in today's computer age?
It’s hard to put it into numbers from 1 - 10. I think it is better to put players in tiers. My list is: S: Kasparov, Carlsen, Fischer, Morphy, Capablanca. A: Lasker, Alekhine, Tal, Karpov, Botvinnik. B: Anand, Kramnik, Petrosian, Ding, Steinitz. C: Etc.

#1 is Frank Reynolds, he single handedly beat the Russians
Awesome video :)
Very well timed topster

Capablanca
Karpov
Anand and Kramnik
Lasker and Alexander
both Mikhals
I mean after top 3 all are similar for me in terms of strenght I'd say even someone like Caruana who isn't a champion is probsbly the top 5 strongest player in history
In 1972 Bobby Fischer would have 100% name recognition all over the world.😮
Yeah cuz Bobby was American. Ask any European player who Carlson is and they know.
@@ericrossoni There is no way that Magnus Carlson has anywhere near the name recognition Bobby Fischer had or had, and anyone who thinks so is completelyb delusional.
@@BiffTekaare you dumb??Magnus is way more famous and we'll known than fischer
I asked lol😂,almost knew magnus but very few literally Only 25 out of 500 knew who is fischer
@@BiffTekathere is areason Magnys is the greatest as he is recognised and a Global Star unlike fischer
This is a good video in terms of pedagogy and arguably one of the best Watch Mojo videos I've ever seen.
Gary Kasparov and Fischer will always be the top two.
Stockfish.
Absolutely true
Mittens.
Impressive and very well researched list. Facts are on point and very accurate.
Anand where? should be top 10, maybe even top 5 considering influence
Tal has the best quote there is sacrificing an my sacrificing
Lets make a list of Best Young Chess Players Today. And we'll see a list dominated by Indians.
Kasparov's abrasiveness was ironically actually part of his appeal. He was never boring on or off board.
@@John-k6f9k I wouldn't minimize it as abrasiveness or merely boring. And it is not appealing at all. We need to stop lionizing bullies, period.
Clear off hater. What did Fischer do to Spassky?
@@whaddoiknow6519 Lol if you think slamming a bathroom door is 'bullying' I recommend you don't watch Bambi, you'll be emotionally scarred.I It's pointless to expect people to play 'nice' all the time, so it's better to just grow a thicker skin.
@@John-k6f9k Alright, so it is OK to slam doors. What about threatening to break your opponent's legs?
The top 3 is obvious
Thanks for interesting and valuable video as always ❤❤❤
1. Magnus Carlsen
2. Gary Kasparov
3. Bobby Fischer
4. Paul Morphy
5. Anatoly Karpov
6. Jose Raul Capablanca
7. Mikhail Botvinnik
8. Mikhail Tal
9. Emanuel Lasker
10. Viswanathan Anand
11. Vladimir Kramnik
12. Alexander Alekhine
13. Fabio Caruana
14. Tigran Petrosian
15. Boris Spassky
Smyslov! Inexcusable omission. He was nearly equal to Botvinnink and at his peak was stronger than Petrosian. Likewise with Spassky. Korchnoi was the greatest player never to have won the world title, displacing Rubinstein, Keres for that distinction.
Everyone else is saying it but yeah, Anand.
My top 10
1. Paul Morphy
2. Capablanca
3. Bobby Fischer
4. Magnus Carlsen
5. Garry Kasparov
6. Viswanathan Anand
7. Vladimir Kramnik
8. Hikaru Nakamura
9. Fabiano Caruana
10. Anatoly Karpov
This list is intriguing, but Karpov deserves to be placed higher, at 6th place, while Nakamura and Caruana lack the historical significance to be included in the top 10 chess players of all time.
the documentary Magnus should have been in Norwegian and should have been Oscar nominated
In my youth, when I was passionate about chess, my idol was José Capablanca.
But I still believe that in a pound for pound debate magnus would be at top.
Magnus the goat man what more do you want from this dude🙌
Great video and list, I would probably switch magnus to one and garry to 2 but it's up to personal opinion. Glad to see that you guys put in research as well 👍 Also maybe Anand over Kramnik but it's close
Cappablanca refused to study chess openings? Almost all the games that they played that time opened in the Queen’s Gambit Declined
Carlsen vs Kasparov I don't care who is first but not putting Vishy is a crime.
My personal favourites: Kasparov, founder of Stockfish, Fischer, Tal
Favourite non super GM players and teachers: Chessnetwork, Tal Baron, John Bartholomew, Simon Williams, Frager68
Alexander alekhine destroyed capablanca and he’s not even in the list lol
I would put Bobby above Magnus for the simple reason that Bobby didnt have engine help to play the way he did, but pretty solid list
Imagine not adding 5 time world champion in this list😮they should add Anand that man one of the greatest of all time, remaining in top 10 consistently more than 20 years
and Vishy still is in the top 10 with all this youngsters around! definitely a flawed list
and still close to the top 10 until now.
Vishy must be in Top 5
Remind me why there is no, "King me", in chess & "checkmate" in checkers?
That's reserved for checkers.
But there should've been a, "Checkmate", in CHECKers
@@JJ.-BB You should stop harassing others. It proves how miserable you are

@@JJ.-BB you have no proof of me sending threats. You sent them and I have proof of you harassing others and wishing people to die in lava. All you do is blame things on others.
Love watching this as a 1200 rated chess player!!
Ridiculous.
And Steinitz doesn't even deserve an honorable mention ? Wow.
@@jasonkoch3182left women off they're hard to compare
@@jasonkoch3182 Andersson or Anderssen? Big difference. Also while female chess is great for what it is, none deserve to be mentioned among the all-time greats. The best a female achieved was a brief top 10 appearance. Ding my butt.
Morphy would have beaten Steinitz, probably
Morphy destroyed Anderssen (an ill Morphy too) whereas a fit Steinitz struggled and fought a tough battle against the same Anderssen...with the battle being neck and neck for the most part. Yes, both Morphy and Steinitz defeated Anderssen.
Chun-Li:"I challenge Magneto! He's good at Chess!"
Some might be angry on me but I'd rather have Alekhine than Kramnik tho😂
Sorry, I made my comments before I watched the video, my bad. I've just realized that you added and mentioned Paul Morphy in the video, good call. I think Morphy was the best ever.
Really watchmojo?? Kramnik instead of Anand...y'all be smoking some good stuff over there
Kasparov will always and will be the goat of chess
I feel like Levy defintly deserves honorable mentions spot
I can accept the exclusion of Alekhine but no Anand in the list means the list is flawed, with all due respect for Morphy and Lasker. How did you make your researches? Unbelievable blunder.
It's an okay list
They prolly didn't have a research time and just googled it to save time
Yep same thought. No Alekhine but Anand? It's unacceptable
watchmojo cant get any list right its crazy.leaving anand out when he was one of the best and THE BEST chess ambassador in the world and especially india. He is the reason gukesh, pragg, arjun and many top indian gms are here and we enjoy their games
Magnus is the goat. The level can't be compared to older times - those without engines.
Lest we forget Bingo Heeler. “Their little prawn children go to kindy together.”
Bart Simpson is the GOAT ... of something
So 5x world champ Anand is not on this list? What is this lol
Lasker did not defend his title "six times in three years" (2:36). It was six times in 27 years.
Im happy to see Paul Morphy in this list. #7
Same, he should be number 1.
Let's be honest we can't keep saying Kasparov is better than carlsen what else do you want him to do all this rattling stuff is annoying
To be honest and to be respectful if Kasparov wasn't alive he wouldn't be number 1 and that should not be a criteria I mean Magnus has won everything done everything
As chess fans we all know what Magnus is
But all is well
Right timing, watch mojo
It is crime to put Mikhail Tal in number 9
Why only world champions? Fabiano and Levon should easily make the list (3 and 4 highest elos ever)
Great List! Now do Top 10 Gamers Of All Time
You dont have vishy .wtf?????
Zhis has to be an IA list
I believe Paul Morphy should be number 1. He didn't have as many shoulders of giants to stand upon because he was biggest of giants whose shoulders are what all modern players stand upon.
yep agreed
He also didn't have many rivals.
Actually Magnus has more tournament wins than Kasparov. There were fewer tournaments in that era than there are now.
And are you including rapid and blitz?
I just wish Bobby Fischer didn't have mental issues. He could have been #1!
Agree with all the other comments. Kramnik is up there, but having him above Anand is... dare I say "interesting"
It’s hard to put it into numbers from 1 - 10. I think it is better to put players in tiers. My list is:
S: Kasparov, Carlsen, Fischer, Morphy, Capablanca.
A: Lasker, Alekhine, Tal, Karpov, Botvinnik.
B: Anand, Kramnik, Petrosian, Ding, Steinitz.
C: Etc.
Watch mojo really has the Indian chess playing community hurting here 🤣
