The Good -- The Bad --The Ugly!
DJI Spark. It was released May 24th, 2017 and I purchased it on June 13th, 2017. Since the time of my purchase, there have been several firmware changes and flight mode restrictions from the as advertised product. Though other features have been introduced in its place the appeal of the Spark, at least for me, quickly faded. The DJI Spark was purchased for my daughter so we could go out and fly, but as with any kid her age she quickly lost interest and moved on to other toys. The Spark has a 12mp camera capable of 1080p HD video that to this day everyone still questions, “why not 4k”. As for flight time and battery life, the DJI Spark can fly roughly 12 minutes although it was advertised for 16 in perfect conditions. This could be an issue, but for most people, they just purchase a few spare batteries and all is well. Overall the Spark did a great job of being affordable enough to bring more people into the hobby, but the largest complaint I have seen and heard is the unexplainable fly-aways.
DJI Mavic Air. Released January 28th of 2018 purchased February 23rd the Mavic Air can fly for 21 minutes has a 3 axis gimbal, almost complete obstacle avoidance coverage and can fit in the size of your hand. The Mavic Air is super easy to travel with and can still shoot 4k footage with its 12-megapixel camera. It can even produce 32-megapixel panoramas along with other unique shots. In my opinion, the Mavic Air is what the Spark should have been and the Mavic Air should have been called the Spark 2 or Spark Pro. DJI really pushed the limit with the terrain sense and avoid feature that ties into the obstacle avoidance and it really works well. .. Except for tree limbs and branches. Watch out for those…
Moving on to the Mavic Pro. Still, to this day it is my most enjoyable drone I’ve had the opportunity to fly and own. It is stable in flight and locks into whatever position you put it in. The DJI Mavic Pro comes equipped with a 12MP camera that is capable of shooting 4K videos at 24 frames per second (FPS) all while being mounted to a 3 axis gimbal. It is capable of 96 FPS when shooting in 1080p and bitrate of 60Mbit/s. The Mavic Pro has a 27 minute flight time and can fly up to 40mph in sports mode and is highly maneuverable. If there was one platform DJI decides to throw all its technology in, I hope it’s the Mavic Pro line.
DJI Phantom 4 Pro or Phantom line in general. The most recognizable and sold drone in the market to date. This has been the workhorse for real estate and mapping pro’s around the world. With a flight time near 30 minutes, a 3 axis gimbal with 4k 60fps camera and 360-degree obstacle avoidance. Almost the perfect drone….. Almost. The sensor on the Phantom is great until low light situations. Then the noise starts to creep in. This can be corrected in still photography by using AEB and allow the stops to fill the noise and then correct the rest in a post, but for video, it’s pretty difficult to fix. The only other issue I have experienced with the Phantom is every once in a while the gimbal will randomly wander off track or pan.
Now to the king the Inspire 2 with X5s micro 4/ 3rds camera system. Is it the best cinematic drone on the market today… No, but for the price, you can do some pretty amazing things with it. The Inspire comes with some interesting flight modes which I consider just bells and whistles. To be honest the only real feature I use is Spotlight pro mode. That’s a great mode to use. The benefit of using the Inspire with the X5S is the ability to swap lenses. No other camera system can do that except the newly released X7 super 35 system. The inspire has collision avoidance all around and for the most part is stable. It does wander a little bit but mostly stays in place. Top speed of 58mph in sports mode the ability to have multiple operators for pilot and camera and the ability to upgrade to 5.2k prores and cinema dng codecs. Even with all these awesome perks, there are still some complaints. DJI still pushes faulty firmware updates that unless you’re on top of it will leave you stranded in the field or left wasting time and battery downgrading. With as much as the Inspire costs, I wished that it was as locked into a hover as the Mavic Pro is. Thankfully the Inspire isn’t in one place very often so that’s not much of an issue.
