What you don't see is just as scary or even more scary than what you do see. Slasher flicks are just a series of jump scares and gore. Their is no real tension or suspense in a slasher flick.
Alien is a true Horror classic in this regard. Some of the scariest moments in Alien are when nothing really happens. It's the suspense of something happening that scares you and the resulting tension. Aliens had this to a lesser degree as well. The 3rd movie was more of a slasher flick however.

But the question is then, what does the adult xeno eat if not the people? And there isn't an answer unless the people transitioned into eggs is cut. It also negates the existence of a Queen in ALIENS that lays eggs but that's not why the scene in ALIEN was cut.

2001 is a classic - for me, one of the very greatest works of art ever made.
It's slow - like space travel is ... but so epic in scale.
Richard Strauss's "The Blue Danube" is a highlight - played in its entirety while a space shuttle goes through the docking procedure with the rotating space station.
In fact, I'll let you into a personal secret ...
Every New Year's Day - I wake up with a hangover, and the Vienna concert is being shown live on TV ... when they do their second encore (which is always the "Blue Danube") .... I slowly get out of bed in slow motion - as if I'm in zero gravity.
Yes. A 19th century piece of music = space travel.
      Kubrick was a genius.

Natalie Gold Here's a bit of very obscure trivia about "Alien". In the film you can see the alien character drooling a lot, and the drool was a methyl cellulose, a powder, dissolved in water to form a clear solution, you can adjust the viscosity by the amount of water you add to it. Among its uses is one of the adhesives used by book restorers for patching torn paper. The more viscous stuff was KY, as pointed out by other correspondents.
Also, the other female crew member was played by Veronica Cartwright, the older sister of Angela Cartwright, both with quite illustrious acting careers.

From the point where the "hugger" jumped out at William Hurt's character, the tension just NEVER quit (though for a great scene, check out William Hurt's scene in Mel Brooks' "Spaceballs," which is such an amazing spoof!) The first time I saw it in the theater, when the cat popped out of the locker, I was "That's it, I'm out-a-here" and left the theater. Eventually I went back and saw it from start to finish.

There is a cut scene, where you find what the Alien did to the missing crew. Sense the Alien was a Male Drone, it was preparing Dallas and the rest into Eggs. By using it's saliva.[ you get to see the human bodies being broken down]. the scene shows Dallas begging to kill him. Next the reason the Creature looks human, is because it takes on the DNA characteristics of the host. In the cut Scene you also see the Alien was Turing a room into a nest. Also done by his Saliva/corrosive acid, the walls look like the inside of the lower doomed ship. I think this was better then just only a Queen, it was most terrifying to see Dallas being absorbed into a egg shape.

Bladerunner is still influential but that "love" scene has always felt wrong to me even way back when I first saw it in my very early teens, I have a feeling it is supposed to be sexy but it's straight up rape. I can't really recommend to watch it because of that, even thinking about it makes me uncomfortable

I’d love to recommend a classic science fiction/horror film from the 1980s.
    “The Fly”.
Directed by David Cronenberg. It stars Jeff Goldblum and Gena Davis who were a real life couple at the time.
It is a masterfully paces and executed story. And one of Jeff Goldblum’s best roles.

I didn't fully appreciate Alien until I saw it in theaters properly for the rerelease recently... now I'm a complete snob about it and know pretty much everything there is to know about it. The brilliant thing is that you know so little about these characters and yet you 100% "know" them because of how they're so incredibly acted... Ripley of course is the most developed but she's clearly the no-nonsense badass who does get emotional at times (i.e. when she breaks down shortly before the reveal with Ash), Parker is the sort of comic relief (I think about "the bonus situation" and "cornbread" constantly now) who's also smart and ultimately good-hearted, Brett is as dumb as bricks but funny as shit too because of that (the whole theater laughed at his death scene during the rerelease), Lambert is the quite literally wide-eyed ingenue but honestly who of us wouldn't be reacting like her in that situation... Dallas is the hardass who's a little too obstinate for his own good, arguably his decisions start the whole movie (but Ash intervened so honestly I think they never had a choice...), Ash is a complete fucking ruthless monster, I can't believe I thought he was on their side my first time watching it... there are so many clues. Even Kane feels like a fleshed-out character despite having maybe 5 minutes of screen time and only being known for his death. Legitimately in the scene right before "the scene" with Kane where Kane has woken up John Hurt's acting is so subtle and fantastic because Kane is making these troubled facial expression while saying he's pretty much fine. He's less of a "Crewman #6" (get the reference?) and more of the sacrificial lamb. There's a deleted scene that adds pretty much nothing to the film where Kane is just fixing himself what looks like cereal and it's literally just John Hurt on screen for about 20 seconds with like 3 lines but even that adds depth to his character. (Never understood why his costume was a v-neck going down to his pelvis... was that Hurt's decision?) Sorry for geeking out this movie is incredible... Aliens is great in its own way but is very very James Cameron 80s... Alien could be made 50 years in the future and would still be almost just as incredible.
