Vazquez was killed by an Alien (she blew up but close enough) a Terminator and also died on the Titanic.

Lance Henrickson was an android when heavily damaged by the xenomorph queen. Ripley is the one that "killed" him when she shut him off.
When Paul Reiser, who played Burke, watched this with his mother, she smiled and nodded when he died. Everybody hates Burke!

I was in the theater when I saw this film when it came out. The moment when Ripley comes out wearing that walking forklift and said "Get away from her you bitch!", the audience broke out in cheers. Total badass moment.
I saw it too! People stood up and threw their hands in the air, insane goosebumps
I saw a showing at the Albert Hall in London with full live orchestra about ten years ago, Sigourney and James Cameron came onstage after the film to take a bow :)

Yes. They also cheered when Burke and the alien came face to face.
And with good reason! I stand up and applaud every siingle time I watch it.
Newt calling Ripley mommy at the end is such a perfect moment. I also love how Hicks is just kinda running game on Ripley the entire movie but they never actually kiss, you just wouldn’t have any time or privacy in that situation, a lesser movie would have been way more obvious and dumb about it. So awesome. And Bishop turns out to be the best dude ever even though you are waiting for him to turn evil at some point. Awesome movie.
In the extended version of the movie you learn Ripley had a daughter that died of old age while she was in cryosleep . It makes Newt more important to Ripley because Newt represents the daughter she left behind and another chance for her to be a Mom.
Is that not in the theatrical release? That was a mistake.

@@Pink.andahalf The three main cut parts were that, the colony investigating the alien ship and discovering the egg pods, and the turret gun sequence.
Right. Theatrical release is about 2h 24m. Extended cut is about 2h 41m.
The extended release includes the sequence (in Earth orbit) where Burke shows Ripley a photo of her daughter who has already died of old age / cancer (the picture is actually Sig Weaver's mom). Ripley laments that she intended to be home for her daughter's 12th birthday.
It also includes Newt's family being the first ones to discover the alien ship, and Newt's dad being the first one infected with a facehugger. (So that's a much earlier first reveal of the aliens than in the theatrical version.)
And it includes the four automated Sentry Guns, which adds a few minutes to the battle sequence of the aliens closing in on the remaining Marines.
You can also play as Ripley's daughter in the game Alien Isolation

Alien: Resurrection never happened. That was a live action fan fiction I refuse to accept. For that matter the alleged Alien3 is in the same category.
After Aliens some decent comics continued the story for awhile and then Ridley Scott decided to listen to the producer of a garbage tv show and then buried the whole thing in an alternate reality cliche.

Well based on Aliens: Colonial Marines, Hicks wasn't in the sleep chamber and someone else was thrown in there, thus Hicks survived.

There's a great continuing joke in the novelization, where one of the marines is like, "so, do we use judo on them or something? Do they have arms?" And Ripley says in a very tight voice, "they have arms".

I misheard that line for YEARS. Thought they were saying, "Nuke it for morbid" like it was some future slang for "until everything is dead". I'm not a smart person.

I also love how Henriksen played him ambiguously enough that we're kind of suspicious that he might be very much like Ash was throughout the movie as he voices his interest in the creatures. It's only at the very end that we know for sure that he has the "heart" at the right place.
That "you okay?" and the kid giving a traumatized thumbs up is all of us in 2020

The whole idea of Ellen Ripley being a badass was new when this movie came out.
Every female badass action movie character owes sigourney weaver a debt.
My dad saw Alien in theaters and said people were surprised the final three survivors were the two women and the black guy. Everyone thought Tom Skerritt was the hero. Crazy to think that 1979 really wasn't that long ago.
@@brendanfoehr5086 I saw it in a theater too, but I was 6. And I totally lost my shit at the chest burster scene, and my dad had to take me home. So I can't speak to the original audience reaction on this one...
And it's rare that anyone topped her character since. So many writers and directors fall into the trap of making their female characters cartoonish... lacking any weakness or vulnerability. What made Ripley so amazing was that she was afraid. She was fucking terrified. Understandably - anyone would be. But she faced her fear... she went into the belly of the beast showing that she knew what was at stake.

What are you on about? No other movies were made after this and the franchise continued in comic form. Unless you're referring to some poorly written live action fan fiction that was shown in theatres, but that would be bad form.

In an interview, Paul Reiser (Burke) said he took his mom to see this movie. Beforehand he told her that the audience would cheer when his character dies and to not get upset about it. When that scene finally came around, he said, his mother was the one cheering the loudest.
I saw this movie when I was 7. The top three things I remember from that viewing are :
1. The alien queen
2. The sound of the pulse rifles
3. That half eaten donut
The pulse rifle thing is sooo much mistaken.
There are actually VERY FEW times the pulse rifles are fired:
Hudson shoots out the window to the med lab, Hudson shoots the facehugger attacking Newt, Vasquez shoots the facehugger attacking Ripley.
The short command room scene, Hicks, Vasquez, Hudson, and Ripley all fire multiple bursts.
Hicks shooting the alien coming through the door into the elevator, that acids him.
Ripley shoots 4 aliens and the queen in the penultimate fight.
The first of these, the med-lab scene, does not take place until 1 hour 51 minutes into the film. The so called iconic pulse rifles are not fired a single time until 111 minutes into the film!
What you are probably on about is Vasquez and Drake's smartguns. These ARE fired earlier, and give off a VERY iconic sound.........
I always mistake that donut for a giant slug lol

Did you notice how the whole team - including the lieutenant - kinda lost it when Apone died? Apone was seriously competent, and everybody (with the possible exception of Burke) knew it.

During my military service in the Swedish Army, all my Lt's were awesome. The assholes was the(Fänrik in swedish) Ensigns or second lieutenants (I don't know the right name for the rank), the rank before lieutenant. They were these overly macho guys who thought they knew everything and liked tormenting us with extra marches and exercises all the time.
Especially when you get in the reserves or guard lol

Weyland-Yutani has genetically, cyberniticlly and, psychinetcally experimented on Xenomorphs. To domesticate and militarize them. Then sell them to the highest bidders.
They expose colonies and civilian installations to these experiments. Then when they back fire or something else happens they send in either elite mercenary units or, the Colonial marines.
I think it would be a pretty good nerd debate to figure out which one is more inept and/or evil.

The extended version is amazing. Much more information about the settlers and Newt's family, plus the knowledge that Ellen Ripley's 10 year-old daughter Amanda died of old age while Ellen was frozen in space. It really gives the Ripley/Newt relationship a lot more depth and meaning
The scene where Ripley is moving the cargo and asked "Where do you want it?" was a "That's what she said" moment.

The third connects directly with the second, and makes sense too. U can watch it, it isnt bad. The fourth one does connect to the events of the third movie too, but it doesnt make sense that much, i think it isnt that good. The story behind the two Aliens vs. Predator movies made more sense, but they lack ripley.

Yes. There is only Alien and Aliens. Do NOT watch Alien 3, Resurrection, Prometheus nor Covenant. However, if you are a gamer pick up Alien Isolation. It's a direct sequel to Alien but a prequel to Aliens. You play her daughter Amanda Ripley. It's worth it! Trust me!!

I remember when my mom saw this movie. She told me something that was actually pretty spot on. She liked the movie because she felt it was about a battle between two mothers, defending each other's species.
One of the most heartbreaking things about this movie was cut. In a deleted scene in the beginning of the movie, after Ripley wakes up, one of the things they tell her is that her only daughter has died of old age already. It's an emotional scene and really adds to the the weight and meaning of the whole mother/daughter theme the movie has.
It was re-introduced in the director's cut, with a few other scenes as well. Amanda Ripley is also the 'star' of one of the greatest computer games of all time "Alien: Isolation". I was a kinda sorry that Natalie didn't watch the extended cut of the movie. Sigourney's Mum is the photo shown by Burke to Ripley in that cut scene.

The director's cut of this movie is WAY better, learning about Ripley's daughter really adds to the character development and her relationship with Newt, also the gun torret scene is awesome.
Yes, definitely, and all the earlier scenes of the colony and of Newt and her family when the trouble began.
Oh yeah, that sentry gun scene was terrifying, just watching those ammo counters dropping and dropping, and those damn things STILL coming on. Wish that they had not had to cut that one for the theatrical release. Though I can see why, it was great but did not have to be there to move the story along, and things have to go in order to make the runtime.
Holy I ALWAYS watched the DC so I actually never knew what was missing in the TR. Yeah, withouth the daughter bit and the parts in the colony the movie is missing out. + Alien Isolation makes less sense

Why would it be better to imply that she couldn’t have a motherly instinct unless she herself already had a daughter and that she died? Superfluous. Colony scenes also superfluous. Gun turret scene is good tho.
Thank you for sharing this with us. Legit cried a little with you on the mommy thing. Seen it before, but experiencing it through someone else makes it so fresh and awesome.

Funny story, when Newt is captured the entire theater practically had a collective nervous breakdown.
When it was revealed that she was ok, a woman near the front of the theater said really loudly, "OH GOD, SHE'S STILL ALIVE!"
The theatre went completely mad laughing!
I had tears in my eyes from laughing so hard!

Long ago having been a teenage usher in a 70mm theatre with Aliens playing one summer, your reactions bring smiles! Watching 900 people react like you was a real treat and great film education.

What they did with Aliens that I thought was clever, they played on Ian Holm's performance in Alien, and make you think that Bishop is a bad guy for a while, before you realise he isn't

But he's not a bad person. One thing I would like to note, is that Gorman recognises he fucked up, so when he recovers, he never makes any move to pull rank or take control. He just lets Hicks take charge and even seems to taking orders from Hicks, since he can see Hicks is a much more experienced soldier, a capable leader and has the respect of the rest of the group. So Gorman was a terrible leader, because he had no experience, but knew enough to defer to a much better leader when he saw one.

Lt. DAN (forrest gump) , was Ok.
When I was in the corps my Lt kept asking the same question (what would I do if a tidal wave came?) And I kept giving him the same answer. Three years in he added "And don't tell me you would ride it out on your surf board." I then asked him, "Sir, do you have any idea how fast a tidal wave can move?"
When my son and then my daughter became US Navy lieutenants, they made sure to tell their Chief : “you run it and I run around in it’! Their Chief always asked how they knew that. Their answer, “My dad is a Chief, so I’ve heard that all the time while I was growing up”.

The 2 smart gunners are not lovers, they're just close buddies.
I can't remember if it was in the novelization of the movie, or elsewhere, but the back story for them is that they both have criminal backgrounds, and they were "offered" the choice of prison or military service. They're close because they come from similar backgrounds, and have much in common with each other, in contrast to most or all of the other marines.
Really? I always thought they weren't quite lovers....but slightly more than friends.

5:15 got me. That little 'lol' moment was perfect.
The Company is technically called the Weyland-Yutani Corporation. In the prequel film Prometheus we meet co-founder Peter Weyland. If The Company seems to have a bit too much control over everything, it’s because by this point they’re basically the government.
Fun fact: Not only did nobody expect to hate Carter Burke this much (actor Paul Reiser is primarily known for kindly sitcom dads, and threw a lot of people when he successfully pulled off a villain role), his own mother hated him. Interesting tidbit, there is not a single female character in the entire The Thing movie from 1982. There is in the original, and there is in the most recent remake. But not in the 1982 film.

@@Cenindo indeed there is, I wasn’t considering it to be a “character” but it certainly could be thought of that way. I always thought of them choosing a female voice for the chess game exactly because there are no women with them in the station. What surprised me about the movie is not a single phone conversation with one of the men’s mother, wife, girlfriend, sister. Nothing? Not a single conversation? I am not surprised that there are no women
physically in that station given when the movie is made, but interestingly the 50’s original is the same basic set up, and there is a woman in that cast, so maybe I should be. But I am very surprised that there are no female actors who had at least a telephone conversation or a flashback scene with one of the men at some point in the movie.
First off, I loved your reaction this movie, it was essentially the same reaction I had seeing this move as a kid. The swearing, the emotion, the physical animations you did during tense scenes... all of it.
They were surprised that she could drive the loader because she was an Officer and Pilot, they didn't expect an Officer and Pilot to know how to do manual labor.
The aliens did NOT "cut the power", the gun fire under the reactor ruptured key systems of the reactor cooling system causing it to go into shutdown mode to try and stop it from melting down. The computer saw that the reactor was not functioning correctly and started to try and mitigate the situation, with the cooling system damaged it was not able to transfer heat (how they make electricity), the system knew it had to reduce the load on the reactor to reduce the heat, so the computer shut down power to non-essential systems to reduce the strain on the power plant.
Burke didn't die right away, the drone (Alien) took him to the "hive" to be encased in the secretions and have a face hugger implant an embryo in him. (Just like what happened to Newt.)
You said the exact same thing i did, she should have been able to close the outer door from the panel she opened it with.
This movie (as well as Terminator and others) disproves the "men don't like strong female characters" complaint by "woke" actors these days.
Just a good story, with good actors who were hired because they were good actors (no politics/ political agenda) ... that's it.

I've been using "I'm happy to disappoint you" for over 30 years.
"Stay frosty" made a lasting appearance in everyday language thanks to this movie. You also hear "game over, man" in pretty much every occupation when things go wrong. There's been so many movies that tried very hard to have their one-liners become iconic, but only Aliens succeeded at that with no effort at all.

I liked Gorman's character arc. He wasn't a bad guy, just naive and inexperienced. He mans up at the end though.
Yeah he was in a terrible situation. The only call I hold against him is when they figure out bullets might blow up the reactor. He's stuck in the binary "collect magazines vs. don't collect magazines" decision, whereas real leadership would be to think beyond that to "pull everyone out of danger and come up with a better way." Still very hard to do in the moment with everyone screaming at you, but his people are counting on him to think about the whole picture.
@@adamwarlock1 Burke was the one who pulled strings behind the scenes to make sure Gorman specifically led the mission, so he's not only responsible for the colony getting fucked over but the marines too. I mean I've never been in the military but you don't send fresh graduates on a very dangerous mission like that. You ease them into the role over time by giving them simple missions at first and you work them up to it. Or at least I'm assuming that's what most militaries would do.

One of the best sci-fi films ever, one of the best sequels ever and James Cameron's best film, IMO.

During the scene where Newt slides down the chute and gets captured by the Alien they couldn’t get the shot right. Carrie Henn (Newt’s actor) kept making mistakes until the crew realised that she was deliberately messing up the takes so she could go down the slide again.
Carrie Henn also said that the scene in the water where she got captured was her favourite scene to film. The water in that scene was nicely heated but it was a little too warm to stay in for long so she sat down on the side with the guy in the Alien costume and had fun splashing their feet in the water. When you know how fun that whole sequence was to film it makes it actually kind of charming.

I think weaver does some of her best acting in Galaxy quest... in the key scene where Nesmith has to admit the truth... the look on her face... you can see the pain he feels... in her face.

Way back when, a buddy and I went to the theater to see "Maximum Overdrive," but it had left the theater, so we saw Aliens as a second choice. Best mistake we ever made. Watching this with your commentary was like seeing it again for the first time.
You can think of "The Company', Wayland-Yutani, as The East India Trading Company back in the sailing ship days. Really just a corporate conglomerate but practically a nation onto itself.

W-Y probably isn't the only company in the Alien 'verse but likely one of the, if not the, biggest.
I read the novelisation of Aliens back in the day. I don't know if it's canon, but from what I remember, it's a huge monopoly with some illusion of competition because other - much smaller - companies exist. Weyland-Yutani allows then to exist to do business that's too specialised for them to bother with themselves. If they get too big, or try to really compete with W-Y, or W-Y just decides it wants them, W-Y takes them over one way or another.

In the extended cut Ripley's daughter was dead of old age. That makes her relationship with Newt more intense.
The game they made out of her makes it seem like she died possibly during the game's events and the company lied to her mum, or that they smoothed out parts of her life to keep Ellen from flipping shit.
Yes, that one scene makes her relationship with Newt so much better. I don't care at all for the colony scene though, i'm glad that was left out

In a cut scene, we learn that Ripley had a daughter who died shortly before she returned to earth. It makes the Newt storyline even more touching.
Not only touching, but adds even more to the face off between Ripley and the Queen- clash of motherly instincts!

There's a fairly recent video game (Alien : Isolation), which covers a grown up Amanda (Ripleys daughter) taking a dead end job in the ass end of space to get access to the space station where the Nostromo was recovered to, hoping to get the black box data and find out what happened to her mother. With hilarious consequences
Jonathan Hill i seriously doubt the reason for the bad writing for alien 3 was because Riply was a good female character. It was simply because they wanted to make money and rushed it. So don’t bring that bs into this. Riply is great but she was ruined by the writing. The alien comics were better than alien 3 and resurrection.

I remember watching this for the first time, I was tiny, *way* too young. Spent the whole first half basically petrified, then as Ripley's having her arming up scene to go rescue Newt, I remember it slowly dawning on me that after having narrowly escaped that nightmare pit what she was doing was getting ready to go back down into the middle of it, and I couldn't wrap my head around how a person could have the balls to do that.
I think I actually asked my dad, "How can she go back in there?"
He was just like "She's brave," but I couldn't fathom it.

The first time I watched Stranger Things 2, I was sure that Dr. Owens, played by Reiser, was going to turn out to be another betrayer, like Burke.
