    They're really impressive Jim, both in terms of their eventual height and being able to stand up to the wind without being blown down or snapping off! Thanks for sharing.

    So all of that growth and development for just one flower head? You had some orchard bees on that close up.. beautiful! Thanks you, I'll be avoiding this sunflower, but it was very informative... thanks for sharing! Thumbs UP!

    • @MidwestGardener
      @MidwestGardener  6 лет назад +1

      Yes, just one flower head. I grew some volunteer sunflowers this year that did very well with multiple heads. Thanks for the identification on the bees. Much appreciated. Thanks for dropping by, Frederick!

      @FrederickDunn 6 лет назад +1

      Wow.. that's a fast reply and so nice when someone cares enough to respond to questions. I'm going with the Maximillian sunflowers as they will continue to expand through the years... I'm planting two acres for bee studies. Do you put up Orchard/Mason Bee boxes? If not, look into it, I think it will compound your appreciation of the flowers you're growing. All the best!

    • @MidwestGardener
      @MidwestGardener  6 лет назад +1

      Thanks Frederick! I just happened to be on my laptop, since I posted a video this morning. Wow, two acres should provide plenty of activity for sure. I haven't put up a bee box yet, but it is something that I've been thinking about for a while. I'm going to have to officially put that on my list of things to do. Thanks again......take care.

    Greetings from Hot and Humid city of Fayetteville, North Carolina.
    Your video on sunflowers are awesome!!!
    This is my 4th year planting sunflowers since 2020 and in stores I’ve searched for mammoth Grey Stripe till I found them today which I Thank God for it🙏🏻.
    For 4 years I’ve planted only Russian Mammoth sunflowers but the results weren’t quite as expected to grow tall and maintain strong stalks.
    Although I have one question to ask.
    Last year when I used cow manure for skyscraper sunflower, a stalk was very massive and it worked.
    Will a cow manure help sunflowers grow taller and stronger including mammoth grey stripe I purchased?

    • @MidwestGardener
      @MidwestGardener  6 месяцев назад

      Hello. Thanks! Fertilizer whether manure or chemical can help sunflowers grow a stronger stem and sometimes bigger flower heads. I'm glad that you appreciate the beauty of sunflowers. A 10 foot tall sunflower can be quite a sight.

    Love the "Fat Head" one :-). I think next year I need to plant in the ground only. The big one my daughter grew in her raised bed took it over. When I took in up most the soil came up to, HUGE ROOTS... It was like chopping down a tree. TFS, T

    • @MidwestGardener
      @MidwestGardener  8 лет назад

      Yes, that probably would work better. Lol, they can have pretty sturdy stalks.

  • @jemp3960
    @jemp3960 2 года назад +1

    Oh wow! I was just sent seeds for these to plant next year. Can't wait to plant and watch them grow. 😯
    After you harvest the flower, how do you get rid of the stalk and roots? They look really thick.

    • @MidwestGardener
      @MidwestGardener  2 года назад

      I usually cut them down with a lopper. Then after the stump has been in the ground a while, I pull them up and shake the dirt off.

    I just planted some myself about 1.5 weeks ago. How much water should I be giving them? I want 10 footers too!!

    • @MidwestGardener
      @MidwestGardener  4 года назад +1

      I don't really have a watering schedule, but I probably water 2 or 3 times a week. I try to water a little more often a couple of weeks before they flower, and a couple of weeks after.

  • @Felis-Concolor
    @Felis-Concolor 5 месяцев назад +1

    How much should I water them when they’re only 4-5 inches tall?

    • @MidwestGardener
      @MidwestGardener  5 месяцев назад

      I don't have a set schedule. What works for one location won't work for another. I try to pay attention to the soil and not let it dry completely out. In the summer here, they might get watered once a week when they are over a foot tall or so. Some of mine don't get watered at all unless it rains.

    Hi there I have giant grays I planted 8 seeds in 7 inch diameter pot that came with the giant gray sunflower kit box that I bought. They gave me a spray to mist them as well. It’s been 9 days and they have already grew 7 inches tall and they have all bent and are not sticking up. Is that okay? It’s meant to look like that I m guessing...

    • @MidwestGardener
      @MidwestGardener  4 года назад +1

      Well, it's really hard to say without seeing them, but bent doesn't sound right. I don't know if you plan to leave them in pots, but they do much better in the ground.

    • @cindyv3902
      @cindyv3902 4 года назад +1

      Midwest Gardener thanks for the reply! Never grew plants before. The stems are very thin right now and they are pretty long and just growing more to the side than straight up and it has caused the stems to look bent even though it’s not broken at all yet

    • @MidwestGardener
      @MidwestGardener  4 года назад +1

      Well, again, without seeing them, it sounds like they might be what is called leggy. Some plants can get tall and thin stems and start to bend over if they don't get enoug light/sun.
