RIP Dickie Betts, the best improvisational guitar player in Southern Rock!
I was about 15 feet from the stage when they played this. This was after midnight on Sunday, June 10, 1973. The show had started with Wet Willie from about 12:30 to 2:30, the Allman Bros from 3-6:30 and the Dead from 7-12:30. Then Dickie came out and jammed with the Dead for another hour or so. Definitely a great day in my rock'n'roll history.
+Jim Kirby fucking amazing
U win life dude! I hope u realize that?
Wow! I was there! In fact,, I was so very lucky to have had 2 friends of mine with me, and they hoisted me up on their shoulders and I managed to sit right at the front side of Gregg's Hammond B-3 organ!!! And, well, I was bothered by the stage bouncers at all, because I behaved myself. Or, I should say, behaved myself by staying put! But,,,, I took a look at Gregg playing, and I noticed right near me, just half an arms length away, on the top edge of the organ, just above my head,, was a can of Budweiser, 2 white face cloths, a pack of Marlboro smokes,,,,, and,,,, a HASHPIPE! And if you're wondering if I grabbed them all as souvenirs,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, YEP,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, I WAS A BADDDDDDD BOYYYYYY!!! If you were near the left front of the stage, and somehow you remember this guy climbing up, and sitting at the Hammond organ......................................................... it was me............ at 19 .......................... now................. 63!!! What a show!!! And in fact, it was at that show,, that Dickey Betts announced the soon to be released "BROTHERS & SISTERS" album,,, and,,,, the song JESSICA was first heard!!! FACT!!! It was on that tour that Jessica was performed!!!
Do you remember the stage guys tossing quarts of beer into the audience that day? May was it hot... Loved every second of the show.
Those were the days of real music and real concerts
To hear Dickey and Jerry jam together always makes me smile.
Dickey would say he couldn't listen to Jerry too much or else he would sound exactly like him! NFA
Just imagine if Duane were alive for this concert?
Garcia always had a lot of respect for other guitar players on stage. This is such a mutually respectful jam. "sigh!"
LOL I feel ya ✌️💖🎶
My two favourite guitarist on one stage!
Every version is a new experience. What an amazing tune. And Dickey to boot. 🤠
One of the greatest days in the history of rock n' roll. Will we ever ever this kinda music again??? Never.
Amio Bangali. 😂
No. Not ever.
☹️😶🤨🙁😨😧😟☹️

Some of us that were kids back then can still perform, and have near-perfected the duplication of these songs, albeit on a local level. Here in Detroit, people still love both bands. And our ten to fifteen year seniors dig it, to no end. Club gigs, outdoor festivals, etc. Don’t get me wrong. These guys created it. We only pay it tribute. But we love them so much, we perform it faithfully.
Gotta love Bob Weir's chunky rhythm playing. Keeps it flowing forwards and upwards. I WAS lucky enough to be at Watkins Glen and see these guys jam together. If memory serves, the Dead's soundcheck the night before the "festival" turned into a major concert in and of itself.
If you remember it, you weren't there, as they say.
Synergistic alchemy......Both this day, and the one before, are amazing. The two bands create such leveled brilliance between them, it's just historic. Completely out of this world!!!!
Symbiosis
this was a day in paradise
Two of the great jammin bands. May all of those that have passed be still Jammin together.
My first Dead show.
Followed by countless others, this day was so magical, i never looked back #NFA
My thanks to whomever preserved this so beautifully...
I graduated HS in 1973. Had not heard this before. The Allman Bros and the Dead is a fine thing. Thanks for this one. Rolling on in my old age!! ✌️always.

My two favorites together. Dickey and Jerry. So cool! Thank you.
Betts still kicking but....frail
It’s 2023 and still listening to this good music ✌️
so used to hearing Jerry's clean lead. to hear Dickeys Vintage Gibson leads on different pick ups is just classic. This is hall of fame dhit ppl. Best top 5 guitarists in anyone's book with knowledge sparring. Holy crap I love the internet!!!!!!
Well Jerry is a top 5 guitarist. Betts is good but no way a top 5 guitarist.
Dickey played new Les Pauls in the early 70s
yeah I agree &Jerry was missing a finger too, still could play this is an old Buddy Holley tune I don't think I could make a list of just five greatest guitarist
KDKIDI
@@davidwile6 Betts is a phenomenal guitarist. Give credit where it's due
You can instantly pick out Dickey's guitar licks. The same ones he plays on so many Allman's songs.
What a double bill. The dead along with the Allmans? Incredible. Thanks for putting this on here for everyone to enjoy
Grateful Dead & Allman Brothers- Not Fade Away 73'.
My first Dead show ( Allman's too ) . Also where I saw Jerry 22 years later at his next to last show , accompanied by my sister who'd driven me and friends downtown for the first one .Perfect Zen circle , with hundreds of Kind adventures in the middle !
Um, the Dead's last shows were at Solder Field in Chicago. Before that St.Louis. I did that entire last tour.
Right on. This Dickie Betts jam one of my best Dead moments and yes Brother 20 years later back at RFK.
Jerry left shortly after.
Wish this version was all the way
Dicky sounds great with the Dead, I was there the day before, The Dead played in the afternoon and the ABB played at night.
I was at the same concert as you!
I was too!
I was at both shows
Blessed to be there!😊
Duane, Dickey and Barry were all Dead fans. Greg never cared for them though.

It was great back then, where did the years go? Still , I have priceless memories of the dead, and all the other great bands of that era. Peace!

Got terrible insomnia so I just listen to music for hours ! Grateful dead , allman brothers band , the band , tom petty , Springsteen , Dylan and I'm English think I should have been a yank !!
Haha, that's okay Chris, I could say the same thing here in America about The Beatles, the Stones, The Who, The Kinks, The Moody Blues, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd etc. etc. etc. Lot's of great music from your side of the pond as well!

Love it!
My oh my - this put a smile on my face.
was at the one with Doug Sahm in there either this night or the other night they played there ,,, best two bands all time together ,, liked the nassau coliseum and jersey city Roosevelt GD shows the best that year and can never leave out old and in the way a week before this one.
Love for real
Beautiful
I want to see this live!!!!!
I was at one of these shows on that weekend. I am pretty sure Doug Sahm opened. Then the Dead came on next. It was like 100 degrees. I did lots of LSD that day. But then I smoked some PCP not knowing what it was. Ended up in the hospital. They shot me up with something & I came down but was still pretty high. Went back to the stadium and got in to see the Allman's. It was evening by then and cooler. I went and sat at the top of the stadium and the Allman Bros were great.
i wish i was there
That was one of my best experience in life!
Awesome jam - and rest easy Gregg - sad day today 💔
fabulous
I have photos of this show. Bobby with shorts staring into space. Classic.
I was 20 my brother 19 what a concert what a summer and man O' man it was
scorchingly hot that day. I remember they had a bif fire hose in the back of the
staium trying to cool everyone off:)
Just like much art.
This Will ever be duplicated.

My best,

2 legends 2 maestros respect always and thankfor the music plus so much more xxx miss you xxx
Awesome song by Jerry Garcia and Allman brothers band!!!!-11/11/2021:
doesn't get much better then this! That Heavenly Band will be something to see...
...this was my first concert....! 15 yrs old and had to run away from home to do it....lol....wow. We were totally ate up with AB&GD....!
It was my second concert...The Dead opened up for ABB on Saturday, and the ABB opened for the Dead on Sunday..Around 80,000 saw them on this hot weekend at RFK...i had no idea at the time that I was watching history that would still be played 44 years later...i've got a 6 CD set of this show..(4 of the Dead & 2 of the ABB..)
I was there in 73 and it was great, too bad we took the midnight train to get there and after sharing bourbon and Oreo cookies all night long on the train I slept thru the Allman Brothers but woke up in time for the Dead.
lol sounds like a Tull concert i went to at madison square garden after some rather surprising brownies
don't think you were the only one to sleep through parts of this memorable moment, hot as the dickens that day.
But were they double stuffed?
thank you!!!
Outstanding! Similar yet still distinct musical styles on the guitar.
Wow, ok most people will probably want to shake their heads at me and say NO way. This is straight from the heart though. I like Jerry Garcia but must admit I was a Brothers fan always was. Lately I have to thank youtube because whenever I see Duane or Dickey playing with the Dead I want to listen. I said I never owned and Dead Lp's but one but I am not Stupid. The man can play. That was the first time I heard that and Jerry is just terrific. I kept waiting for Dickey to show up wondering if I would tell the difference between the two. Oh man. when that Sunburst Les Paul came in I thought I died and went to guitar heaven. Just Awesome man. freaking awesome.
I looked down the page to see what comment I could give a thumbs up to, but there were none. I'm honored to be the first. My two favorite bands right here, if they threw Levon Helm or Lowell George in there I probably would go into cardiac arrest. If anyone knows where I can get that amazing picture let me know and if not then just enjoy the song, we all know there's too few of em like this anymore
Gerry music will be for future generations 😊😊😊😊😊
Raffaele Cappieri *Jerry 😎
Somewhere Buddy is smiling....
I was at this show at RFK Stadium in 1973. They also did a great Sugar Magnolia. Ran into Butch Trucks (may he R.I.P.) backstage.
+David Schildkraut Butch Trucks in still drumming. As in still alive.
+J Robinson Sorry, I though he was no longer with us. My bad!
David Schildkraut wow can you see the future or what?
He's gone now
@@BeaverVision Now Jaimoe is left.
It was hot as hell, both days...great shows, though...drove from Colorado to see the gigs
I was there
DICKIE BETTS!!!!
Great jam, the Brothers and the Dead do this tune great!
got there early and set up a pup tent affair maybe 150 yrds from stage. that got trampled in no time. great music. just 600,000 sea of humanity fun. the band set was awesome
Pssssssst, you're thinking of Watkins Glen. RFK was a football stadium
Damn. Sounds so fun
@dedhippi - i agree - truly beautiful to listen to, like their guitars are dancing..
I remember there was the big field in front of the stage I had to get from the other so I grab a gallon of tang dropped 5tabs of lsd 25 all was good
I was at RFK in 1973, the Dead played for hours probably because the Allman Bros were too screwed up. Great times!! I had to lie to my parents saying I was over my college roommates house and 3 of us went to D.C. to see this concert. We were 19 yo. Wow this takes me back!!
My first Dead/Allman's show too, same age, changed my life after that, I went out and bought as much Dead as I could and never looked back til the last time at RFK in '95.
I was at that one. They played forever. I had to leave around 4 am to get ready to teach. Good times.
allmans an dead 2gether. bros were what 2 screwed up? enjoy. and do not ever forget dog allman was not with us.
was rockin!
Saw furthur fest and allman bros same summer 1999 or 2000, but greatest summer ever, allman light show best ever, and hornsby n ziggy n wailers made alpine awesum, after lost jerry!
exelente desde honduras muchas gracias
Two. Wonderful bands.
Kill to see video of this
this is beautiful, thank you for posting. What touches, what playing the sheer joy :)
Upbeat and nice. These two blend well.
NOT FADE AWAY!
Amazing show-Return from Egypt tour.Largest sound wall ever put together up until that time. Hey I was one of the three that was on the roof of RFK - and right before the show started i was on top of the tower to the right.they chased us down.Wet willie played in between the to Almond bro. and Dead i thought.Stadium floor was not bad- sat to the right of the mixing station got high with Dickie Best - never for get it- he sat down next to me on the grass and shook my hand.He had a feather ear ring. that left a vision in me for some reason.Dead came on full moon .Still have the ticket stub.
great show indeed, however, the moon phase on 6-10-73 was a waxing gibbous. no where near full. 3 some on the RFK roof must have been tits though. salud
I was at this show. Thanks for posting!
Michael Davis Recall dehydrating on the infield grass in the all-day heat, waiting for the headliners to finally perform.
Wow what great music 😀😀😀😀
i worked the gig as a temp roadie along with two friends
one day they had me sit on the edge of the stage during the show and discourage peeps from climbing up the front of the stage
i was there for the stage build....2 days prep 2 day show....i gave the stage pass button to my son.......doug sahm opened played guitar and sax with his band d.s. quintet.......
i keep looking for my pic setting on the edge of the stage..long red hair and cowboy hat...please write if you find a pic of me...
cool 'Sir Douglass' Doug Sahm opened
RIght, Doug Sahm opened on Saturday and then the Dead and then the Brothers. Two "legendary RFK shows" as Blair Jackson said in "Garcia: An American Life".
I wanna say that was Butch Trucks as one of the drummers. If there were two, it sounds like Bill K. played with him. I was there, but I don’t remember and I was not that close to the stage, I remember hearing the bassist for the Allmans jammed with the Dead as well. It may have been for this song.
The sad part is it's all over now! All we have is the memorys!!!!
I used to love her but it's all over now.....

Awesome
Jerry, mein Gott!!
Yes, Der Bo Diddley had this song sewn up tight.
But Jerry just spins it to a higher level.
Thank you for sharing.
Matthew
Buddy Holly.
Very tight version of my favorite Dead tune. They just don't make music today like they used to.... ;-)
They do. It doesn't sell so it's very hard to find. Check out Billy Strings, Strange Folk (Lore), Mary Spender
I wonder how many times the Dead played RFK. I saw them play on the Dead and Dylan tour, we went to Buffalo first to see them came back to Philly and rested up then went down to Washington. One hell of a 4th of July weekend.
I was at that '86 show too. That was my first Bob Dylan & Tom Petty show. I know they also played in '89 and '91..'92..'93..and '95 at RFK...They also played a lot of shows at The Capital Centre in Largo, Md.and at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia Md.. I also them at the Baltimore Civic Center in '77
Tim Scott They played RFK in '94, too. My first Dead show was 7/17/94 at RFK. Lotsa fun. 😎
Happy 50th Bros Band. ....
I'm not a typical DH... I'm due hard metal been my whole life..I caught a bunch of early further fests.... my last show was Deer Park Indiana..Beutiful Outdoor Place...lots of fun at the campground s after and onward to Somerset Wisconsin... where we broke down for 11days with only Lsd...what a trip it was.. Peace... out
SWEET! thanks for the upload!
I only got to see the Dead twice and the Allman Bros once. But I saw them both at RFK stadium the day before this recording was made.
the good lord had plans for you!! All praise...
Woke this mornin' feeling it...said Oh, no, Lord...not today!
Instead I put on my custom, signed by the band Dickey Betts dress...let the dance begin!
Not this when we have this God empowered Not Fade Away wallflower.
Speechless....lol Thanks, dude. Excellent.

Not to nitpick...but it was 44 years ago !
Sigh, I so wish that I had been able to see Dickey jam with Jerry. At least, with excellent uploads like this, I can almost feel like I did. Dude, I'm sure your vids are going to be watched/listened to for a very long time-- at least in our very grateful DH household. Thanks and peace, ND
