That was a great video, man! Cooke was a master and will be missed. Analyzing panel structures is one of my favorite things to do in comics, I'd love to see you talking about the 16-panel grid.
Yeah (just rewatched it now because you mentioned haha), but I'd love a video that elaborates on how you can play with the 16-panel grid, since it's way more hardcore than the 9-panel grid (which is already hardcore by itself).
I think in comics, the form of storytelling is definitely almost as important as the story itself. Sure, if the story sucks, it kind of defeats the point, but if the panel layouts aren't effective, or the art isn't good sequentially, then it hurts what makes comics a unique art medium. Darwyn Cooke certainly understood this; RIP.
The simplicity is definitely part of it's appeal, but it's also what makes it really hard to pull of well. Rarely does simple mean easy, haha! But yeah, used right it's a really cool approach. - Hass
Very interesting video. I've not read all of the comments so possibly someone mentioned this already, but it should be Darwyn and not Darywn in the title for this video...
Great essays! Thank you very much. I'd like to hear your thoughts on LOW if It'll be interest you. Greg Tocchini's at times unconventional compositions and Remender's writing is quite a treat, but It would be great to hear some in-depth analysis on them. Thanks again.
You definitely should. The way it's written and drawn is impeccable. It's one of few series I'm eagerly waiting each month and it never ceases to surprise me.
Also, another series that may slip under your radar but may be of interest is Kirkman/Azaceta Outcast. The story, the framing and use of interesting layouts makes it quite a treat. It's no Hawkeye, and yet also an example of elegant simplicity for purposes of storytelling.
I don't think there is another creator in comics that could write and illustrate the same book as well as Cooke. Sure some can do it well but no one could do it as well as Cooke. Completely fine if you disagree with me. List your favorite writer who can illustrate their own work. No I don't think Frank Miller is one. I personally don't like his style.
Here's a few: Mike Mignola, Fabio Moon, Gabriel Ba, Jeff Smith, Craig Thompson, Daniel Clowes, David Mazzuccheli, Sean Murphy and, whether you like him or not, Frank Miller.
Hi Kai, Personal preference, for sure. I'm pretty sure Darwyn was an inspiration to a few on my list and to many more creators not mentioned. He was superb.
Love rewatching these when I need some artistic inspiration
He is one of my top 5 artists of all time! thanks for doing dis!
Cooke is brill! Still got to finish all the Parker books he did, too. Only three down!

Amazing breakdown, super interesting, I had never thought about the 3 panel structure, it's so simple but so effective
Thanks Rodrigo :)

Ah thanks Lucas :) You might very well be in luck this weekend! Strange coincidence for what I had planned!

Neb Olevar I totally agree with you, the structure gives passing, tone and many other things.
Yep. 100%!

Darwyn Cooke was easily my favorite writer/artist in comics, I was so sad to hear of his passing.
Yeah. I'm thankful I've still got a few of his works to get through.

Really appreciate StripPanelNaked, Hassan keep it up! Thanks for all your posts.

woah~ I used these style a lot in my comics and I hate it because it seems too simple~ seeing this makes me feel a bit better~

Cool topic (and execution), fun watch!
Ah thanks!

I think the three wide panels makes it more cinematic.
Definitely an element of it, in the widescreen approach, it starts to replicate that look.
I’m glad I bought this book.
So good!
Cheers!

Denis Sarrazin wow. How did I not notice that!

Awesome, always meant to read New Frontier. 06:00 you should look at Whedon's X-Men in how he specifically doesn't do this, its an interesting choice.
Whedon's X-Men I'm sure I'll get to. Due a re-read of that!

I have the first trade of Low... but still haven't read it yet (story of my life)... Hopefully at some point...

Curtis Thomson Those are some really great ones. I guess it comes down to personal preference in the end. Either way all are great creators

Yeah this definitely comes down to preference. What we can say is no one would have done it the same!

Absolutely. That's the one of the interesting bits about art.
