THIS. ! This is what you call a master drummer .musical too. ive been a drummer for most my life.46 now .ive been following Herb since i was kid in late 80s when 1st heard him. Hes got that super tight focus funk punch rhtyhm and plays music with drums not only beats. Hes one my all time favorites of all. lots drummers got speed but musicallity is altogether different. word to The Herb!! ☆☆☆☆ i
He uses the double bass pedal so well too. So many modern drummers overuse it and just do constant bass drum hits. He uses it tastefully to complement the other instruments.
My all time favorite drummer!! His drum sound and technique is instantly recognizable. Doesn’t just play beats but creates parts that are an equally important part of the music!! Great video!
One of the great finesse drummers of our times.... His use of time and space, in conjunction with his odd and eclectic phrasing, makes his sound totally unique and musically genius. The guy f***in' rocks.
I just used this vid to play the bass part of this song along to. It felt like I was actually jamming with him. I was smiling at the screen the whole time.
The stereotypical thing to do is to rave about the bassline of this tune (well, it's a Claypool bassline!), but here's Herb showin' just how lethal the whole arrangement is. Devastating drummer, particularly live. 😁
The bass drum is what makes this groove so unique. "Jerry was a race car driver.. [bass drum pattern]". It's very original, quite hard to pull off, at least as clean as Herb does it. For me, he's up there with Stewart Copeland -- you can really tell it's Herb who's playing, and not just anyone else.
thanks for these videos of herb man he's definitly one of my favourite drummers and primus si one of my favourite bands and its nice to hear his drumming without having les's bass distracting me, not that there's anything wrong with that cause les is un fucking real but sometimes i miss out on herbs genius but in this case its pure herb all the way and im loving it haha
Easily one of my favorite drummers of all time. I didn't think a drummer could hold a pocket and do the kind of things that he's done since Neil Peart did it. and then the 90s came and I heard herb the ginseng drummer and my mind was melted, shortly their after I saw him in New Orleans at Tipitina's for the Frizzle fry tour. I've been hooked ever since. His drumming his Focus his execution and his unmistakable drum sound. I think he's the best drummer of the 90s in my mind he's better than Danny Carey. I still think that Tim's the more well-rounded drummer and his pocket downright incredible And a master at pulling off the unthinkable. I'm just glad that we have Tim here cuz I know he's had his issues with his heart I think he's had two heart attacks. So hopefully he's not going anywhere and they've solved his health issues and we can have him for a long time to admire the master of discombobulated Funk metal drumming. I came to a point in my drumming career where I hit a wall and I didn't know if I wanted to play drums anymore and then I saw the John the Fisherman video on MTV Headbangers ball in 1991 and it completely changed my outlook on drumming. He inspired me to stick with it and I've been there ever since thank you Tim. If there's any two drummers that describe my style Tim Alexander William Calhoun and Stewart Copeland. Don't let me get started on another amazing drummer from the 90s Mr Calhoun and Stewart Copeland well he's just a drumming nut
I saw him twice after his heart sugary.... recent as few months ago. He's still awesome. Yeah, he doesn't have the energy he had in his twenties but man, guy is in his late 50's now. We all don't have the energy like when we were younger. whole band is getting up there in age. Still puts on a great show though.
@CFH420 Agreed, the other guys in Primus need some more attention. Most people know Primus as "Les Claypool, that guitarist guy, and that drummer guy."
Was this clinic on DVD? Thanks for making it available. I can't play drums for shit, guitar is so much easier. This would make an awesome backing track to jam to.
herb is greate drummer...! because he does not too coplicate drum parts, sturdy rhythm... drummers who play tight and sturdy are the best drummers. It is my opinion.
Yeah, I did :P I thought you didn't know Primus when you said 'I don't know about the others' sorry, I misinterpreted your comment. But what did you mean then?
@beatfreak1983 It's someones opinion and completely pointless to challenge, I just don't understand why someone would just comment all that bullshit, which basically states "I am of superior drum knowledge, shut the fuck up". No drumming between the millions of drummers are unique - If they play in the same genre then theres a good chance someone would appreciate a few recomendations from someone that obviously has superior experience in the field, and may believe you are of superior knowledge
@beatfreak1983 According to him. Who is this almighty opinion lord that makes decisions for other people? Every person is different with their own unique style and musical taste. I personally think Tim is underrated, although not the best, that is my opinion. Why spiel about someone's opinions? Attention is 80% the reason you posted that comment anyway, only 20% opinion, so next time enlighten the dude with some drummers he may not have heard and are of similar style/qualiy, oh Drumlord
You can just hear Claypool's bass and vocals in your mind while Alexander plays...amazing. This is what drumming is about!
Such an underrated drummer. Absolutely love his style
Really is. Some drummers just go unnoticed & its batshit bonkers
one of the most underrated drummers of our all time
Les Claypool once said he would pay money to have seen John Bohnam play two hours at the Greek Theater. I would do the same to hear Tim Alexander.

Love his drumming, very unique! I met Herb and he was really nice and cool, I talked to him for around 5 minutes before a show for this tour.
One of the great finesse drummers of our times.... His use of time and space, in conjunction with his odd and eclectic phrasing, makes his sound totally unique and musically genius.
The guy f***in' rocks.
it's amazing with that much gear he doesn't use a drum rack. he's got stands sprawling off other stands like tree branches, lmao. amazing.
That's Herb. The Ginseng drummer.
Fuck, Tim shreds on the drums. Fucking amazing drummer
Tim and Les... Killer combo... they share a brain and musical sense of humor.
Dog will hunt....
Those Triplets just rolling so smooth 😎
It's unbelievable how underrated this guy is. His drumming is awesome!
1:40 ...GO!
Those drums sound great.
UNDERRATED DRUMMER, after listening primus for the first time i knew i had to play drums or die . one of the best, a pionner, unique style.
My favorite drummer....and my favorite tone.
That is the best snare sound I’ve ever heard
Greatest musical moment when I saw rush and Primus tour together in 1993 still the greatest show I've ever seen.
one of my biggest inspirations
Effortless. Makes it look easy.
Is not that hard mate, but its so flavourfull, tim alexander posses so much flow
Amazing! Nice to hear drums only. Tim is fantastic drummer!
Tim is drastically underrated

YEs now i can jam to this song with the real drums
thanks for these videos of herb man he's definitly one of my favourite drummers and primus si one of my favourite bands and its nice to hear his drumming without having les's bass distracting me, not that there's anything wrong with that cause les is un fucking real but sometimes i miss out on herbs genius but in this case its pure herb all the way and im loving it haha
To compare Brain and Herb, Brain plays beats and Herb plays music. They're both pretty awesome in their own ways.
His drumming just speaks to me
excelent drumer is my favorit (Y)
yea that was awesome

Unrivaled
@JohnTheHater It's Primus's Jerry Was A Race Car Driver. It's an awesome song.
Un mito!!!
Wow, I dont even need to know 'Jerry' to jam to Tim playing this.
It's a shame that he can't play like this anymore. After his medical issues, he isn't the same.
please explain a little bit more. I know he's had some heart issues but it's been years since I've since Primus live, so....
Not true! He is doing great saw him live 3 years ago.
I saw him twice after his heart sugary.... recent as few months ago. He's still awesome. Yeah, he doesn't have the energy he had in his twenties but man, guy is in his late 50's now. @maxxo1o It's an inverted china cymbal, commonly used to imitate hi-hat swishiness
Fucking sick!
Fuck yeah!
TIGHT!!!
casi puedo escuchar el bajo de les claypool y la guitarra de larry
@CFH420 I tend to forget the guitarist's name. I'm going to see more of him.
@mrpicky510 i believ his still uses zildjian cymbals along with his tama drums
HERB!!
Interesting how he uses the open hi hat as a ride. Such an innovative drummer.
Tim and Les make a wonderful couple.
PEOPLE STILL ARGUING ABOUT PRIMUS SUCKS!!! when will it ever end.
this man is the master.genius.
Shit he's incredible
@CFH420 Agreed, the other guys in Primus need some more attention. Most people know Primus as "Les Claypool, that guitarist guy, and that drummer guy."

Fucking awesome! Neil Peart is the man but I think herb might have taken it to the next level
@beatfreak1983

This is Tommy Lee. I think. Not his look. -aeni`.
His double bass work gives me a chubby.
@MrJoelucius No he's not. Vinnie Colaiuta beats him on every aspect of drumming.
2 people take off their clothes and dance around the house like Nature Boy.
Those feet 🦶 are so yummy 😋
@5DollarCarryover Vinnie is the greatest there ever was, sorry.
hes up there with mike portnoy for sure
Primus Sucks
