There were no machines when I started in 68' in Michigan. Machines do the small stuff now, but most saw logs,especially grade hardwoods are still hand cut. I am with this guy 100%. Iprefer running saws over running machines and always will.

The commentary was great especially about the forest service. When a bunch of college grads and citiots start messing with a working system things take a big dump, overregulation is the way of the future....too bad.
I don't want stick up for the forest service too much but I have done a lot of falling for them. I do know that every time they put out a timber sale now days they get sued by environmental groups. So it has made it really hard for them to do whats needed even when they try to. I say just log it.

standard practice in BC, Canada is to have fallers 2 tree lengths away from each other while falling....could not believe the people around him while he was cutting!

I think he meant yarder. Line machine is a big truck that holds skyline extensions, haywire guy line extension. Back up to the landing an start stripping wire off. They're very nice to have.

Clear cutting is a way that man can replace the element of fire in that cycle and effectively manage the forest. Fires are very destructive of far more than just trees. They are very difficult to control. They affect air quality. Fires offer man nothing - no lumber for houses, etc. The term sounds wanton and evil - but the reality is that clear cutting certain species is a best practices solution. The trees felled in this video were all Douglas Fir, which is NOT a fire species.
The thing to remember when mentioning "clear cutting" is to show an area that was a clear cut 20 years ago. I often wonder when the dog hair lodgepole on Lookout Pass will get a lightning strike. Could be 1910 all over again. Log it or lose it.

I dont get how this is profitable? Not to sound ignorant at all but in Sweden we use harvesters to cut down trees, get rid of the sticks and chop it up, all in one go. This takes like 30 seconds... Wow. I grew up in Potlatch. When I was there it was logging, farming, respecting and helping others. My Dad was the old guy that helped out a lot of folks with old cars, old machinery and taught me if you can't buy it you build it. The whole cousin reference was never mentioned (I married and moved away in 1982). There was quite a rivalry between the Moscow Bears and the Polatch Loggers back then.
I've been logging and falling timber and running sawmills for almost fifty years in Oregon and Washington I've seen a lot of guys die I've seen more than my share of things go wrong than you can imagine me and my partner fell a lot of big timber worked on fort lewis for years until a big outfit came along buffaloed there way in just to take over and stole more timber from the federal gove it was so bad they didn't want the media on it never filed charges which was a bunch of shit but what has kept me alive u never turn ur back when things go bad srare death right in the face make your move for daylight at the last second that's what kept me alive I've seen guys die because they panicked turned there back and run never seen it comeing I see it dodge it keep on working I've only stayed home one day from wind always cut two strips when the wind changes its the best wedge or friend I got unlike the light the match if the wind blows it out go home pussys u never find broke wood on my jobs even steepest ground sailing down two hundred foot cliffs Washington logger Dwayne Cullen's yelm wash

Why can't you use bamboo for building houses it grows much faster you know these trees are not going to grow back fast enough 45 years maybe maybe you'll get a tree 35-40 feet tall in 50 years maybe if you're lucky you'll get a tree 50 ft tall I think it's bullshit you cannot continue to cut timber down. It was okay in the beginning of civilization but now why can't you make two by fours out of bamboo Bamboo has the pencils tensile strength of of Steel you got to think of the way trees take carbon monoxide out of the out of the air you're cutting your cutting cutting the entire Forest out uclear cut entire areas I don't see any trees grow in there I see a lot of bare spots with no trees. This gold mining TV show they go in and they bulldoze all these trees down and they don't even use the lumber from the trees. Here in the western states are just now picking up on it and finding ways to make the production profitable. The only issue, is here in the West, bamboo has got to be grown in humid greenhouses or in humid tropical climates in the South with plenty of rain and wet soil. The other issue is getting people to get on the band wagon and make it worth while. And for the record, trees, taken in cabon dioxide and produce oxygen. You can also hear in the video that they farm this land every 60 years. And they also have several of other plots to harvest from and replant. And might I throw in as well, politics have a big part in this as well.

Wow! I can't count how many deer, elk and bear I've seen in clearcuts being logged. Go to a clearcut that was logged 20 years ago. God loves us all.

A strip usually refers to a line of tree's i believe so im assuming he means 2 lines.
