    No man, no madness
Though their sad power may prevail
Can possess, conquer, my country's heart
    They rise to fail
    She is eternal
Long before nations' lines were drawn
When no flags flew, when no armies stood
    My land was born
And you ask me why I love her
    Through wars, death and despair
She is the constant, we who don't care
And you wonder will I leave her - but how?
I cross over borders but I'm still there now
    How can I leave her?
    Where would I start?
Let man's petty nations tear themselves apart
My land's only borders lie around my heart

I had what was in retrospect the honor of being introduced to this song by Raul Esparza. We were doing a production of an original musical together in 1987, and our cast party was on his 17th birthday, so we combined the two events.
He really wanted to show off the song, so at one point he placed the unfamiliar sheet music in front of me (I was the musical director/pianist) and we gave an impromptu performance. The song blew me away, and Raul, even as a raw, teenaged talent, was just astonishing. Not on the level of this recording (which I consider the definitive performance), but he did a beautiful job.
Also, big news: Raul is going to be starring in an upcoming revival of Chess. He'll be playing the American champion, so he won't be singing "Anthem," but he'll tear the place apart with "Pity the Child" at the end of act II. I am seriously looking forward to that.

He did deserve better, but sadly it is only his memory we can now serve, as this incomparable talent collapsed and died while working on "Grand Hotel", March13, 1992. He was only 41. It is my studied belief that David Carroll -- and the orchestral accompaniment here -- far exceed any of the other efforts to the same end. No hamster here, but that permits us to become focused on the music and Mr. Carroll's voice swelling over us in this amazing paean to one's homeland.

I love this song because to me, it is NOT a nationalist song, despite appearances. In fact, it arguably is anything but!
As the lyrics say, "She is eternal. Long before nations' lines were drawn, when no flags flew when no armies stood my land was born."
What he loves existed before any national borders were created, and, it is implied, before any human being even lived in what is now Russia. What he loves is not a nation, not the Soviet Union or the Russian Empire or the United States of America for that matter. It's not a system of government or a leader. What he loves is the COUNTRY of Russia, the land that existed long before humanity even had imagined the name Rus.

His voice is more soft and he does not pronounce the words in the heavy american dialect this man does, eapecially not the hard "R".
